Probably my favorite part about Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid is that Joan never once feels shame or like she's broken for being a lesbian. Joan spent her whole life thinking that love just wasn't for her, and she was FINE with that; it was a non-issue. But once she realizes she is a lesbian (even if the word is never used), she's ecstatic. She is scared because she knows society and NASA won't accept and embrace her, but that's their problem; they're in the wrong for that, it has nothing to do with her.

The book does have period typical homophobia, it is the 80s after all. But there is no guilt, no shame, and no apologizing for being queer. We do still get the mourning of a life that the world won't let you have, the longing for the casual affection afforded to everyone else; however, this lack is framed as a great injustice the world has done to us, one that has absolutely nothing to do with us, and everything to do with them.

I also love the fact Joan is surrounded by people who love and appreciate her so much. The scene where she kisses Griff and he just knows got actual tears from me because it is so normal for that to become a conflict. It's the narrative punishment for not loving men.

“Can I say one more thing?” Griff asked, just before they approached the camp. “That is not my place to say?”

“Of course.”

“I’m not going to pretend to know what’s in your heart. But you’ve said a few things, here and there, and I’ve … sensed a few things, maybe … and …” He stopped and turned toward her. “If you do have feelings for someone—if that’s something that’s on your mind … I worry that you’re in a tough spot. Because as wrong as I think their position is, there are some things NASA doesn’t officially condone for astronauts. From what I’ve heard.”

Taylor Jenkins Reid could have made Griff the main obstacle. He knows, Joan rejected him and he made it pretty clear he understands, to a certain degree, why Joan cannot reciprocate. He even presents the main obstacle to the reader: "there are some things NASA doesn't officially condone for astronauts." That being 'sexual deviancy' which Joan is reminded of later on in the novel:

"the appearance of sexual deviation would make any of our astronauts vulnerable to such a blackmail.”

I think there is something beautiful with how we are reminded we can find good ones out there. Griff could have been an antagonist and TJR could have unpacked period homophobia there. It wouldn't have been far fetched because people have done worst for less. Yet, she decides to give Joan and Vanessa a group of friends who allow them privacy, respect, and love in a relationship society has always frowned upon. She was being genuine when she said this is a love story because the amount of love packed into these characters is breathtaking.
