Magnus Bane in 1x02
Okay, so apparently there’s been an uproar from some fans regarding Magnus in 1x02 and what he does, and so I HAVE to write this post. Because when I saw that scene I was really pleased. Why? Well, read the actual quote down below. In which Magnus and Simon talk in City of Lost Souls (pages 304 and 305).
“[…] If it weren’t for Alec, I’d be gone from here.”
“Where would you go?”
“Hide. Wait for it to blow over. I’m not a hero.” Magnus picked up Chairman Meow and dumped him onto the floor.
“You love Alec enough to stick around,” said Simon. “That’s kind of heroic.”
You guys heard it from the guy himself. Are you seeing the context/reference now? Obviously Magnus doesn’t know Alec at this point in time on the show. Why the hell would he stick around?
Thank you! He is not less of a person for evacuating the warlocks. And when he asked Dot why she would risk it for a shadowhunter...hello...foreshadowing!

Get thee gone, woman, and bring me something brown.” “Brown?” Isabelle made a face. “Brown is a manly color,” said Jace, and yanked on a stray lock of Isabelle’s hair with his free hand. “In fact, look—Alec is wearing it.” Alec looked mournfully down at his sweater. “It was black,” he said. “But then it faded.”

Transferring the story to television did have its advantages, though. While the books were told closely from Clary’s perspective, the show ‘expands out the world’ by revealing what other characters are up to during major events, Decter described. 'You can’t tell a saga from the point-of-view of one person.’

This is so true. Alec didn’t get any POV until much later in the series and he’s never had POV in the supplemental canon. Most of the major supplemental canon involving Alec were from Magnus’s POV.

Today is not that day
Plus Ron is casting his curse non-verbally. That’s very difficult and it requires training and practice to successfully cast a nonverbal spell. It’s success is determined by the amount of concentration and mental discipline of the witch or wizard. But this is Ron Weasley he likely didn’t put training and practice into casting non-verbal spells, this advanced magic comes to him naturally. The only other time we see him cast a non-verbal spell is when he accidentally made it snow in the great hall, and that was only because Lavender was glaring him down after he said Hermione’s name while he was unconscious in the hospital wing. He felt crappy and his emotions were so intense he unknowingly made it snow. Here he’s trapped in a muggle cafe, with his best friend and the girl he loves. He’s probably scared, and angry but most of all protective. He wants to defeat these Death Eaters without anything happening to his team. His emotions are intense again and that allows him to cast a powerful non-verbal spell. No, not even a spell, a curse. We’ve seen Hermione cast non-verbal spells loads of times but even here she says the curse to ensure it’s potency. Ron is concentrated and disciplined enough in this moment to curse a Death Eater without any words at all.
