Like, logically it's not that surprising that Critical Role nabbed David Tennant for a role. David Tennant is a nerd and he's worked with Sam before. It's perfectly logical for Sam to have been like "Hello, coworker David, I am producing a new series with a multimillion dollar budget for an established streaming service, would you like to be paid to do your job on my show?" and for Tennant to go "Yes, coworker Sam, that sounds neat :) " This is all extremely normal.
