One time a woman told me that the Holocaust was over 60 years ago and therefore had no impact on how privileged Jews are today, and that we needed to stop using it as an excuse.
That isn’t, of course, the only time I’ve heard something like that. What was different about this time was that the person saying it was maybe two months out from when she’d been talking about the lasting impact of slavery on the black community.
That really stuck with me.
This is why I say Jews don’t have any allies. I don’t mean this one specific incident, I mean the constant, pervasive string of events just like this one.
Even people who are involved in pursuing more equitable conditions in this country, even people who seem generally aware of the lasting damage caused by oppression and the difficulty of “catching up” from the social/financial/educational/emotional losses, are not able to apply those concepts to Jews.
Because goyim do not see us as people.
