I was just reminded of this little gem from Droga5 back in 2015.

it is a spot for Under Armour entitled Rule Yourself featuring Michael Phelps.

‘It’s what you do in the dark, that puts you in the light.’

Set to ‘The Last Goodbye’ by the Kills.

Still sends chills down my spine.

The worlds first robotic 3D sign went up in Time Square earlier this month. 

When I first saw this, I thought it was just a prototype. But after some digging it looks like this sign really did go up on August 15th. It was designed using 1.750 LED screens that can all move independently of each other. 

As much as I loathe Time Square and avoid it at all costs whenever I'm in NYC, I really want to check this out in person.

British Airways has launched a new in-flight safety video, and it’s great!

I’m sick of the ever growing rules and regulations associated with flying, and besides security; the strict announcements, safety videos and on-boarding protocols are the worst. It’s all so soulless and ‘by-the-book’. Airlines and airports, more than most other industries need a huge injection of ‘human’.

This does it relatively nicely.

Plus it is intended to help raise money for BA’s charity, Flying Start.

‘A team of top celebrities including Gordon Ramsay, Rob Brydon, Sir Ian McKellen and Thandie Newton make appearances in British Airways’ entertaining new pre-flight safety video, which launches in September.

“We’ve worked with Comic Relief since 2010 and our customers have already helped us generate £16.5 million for great causes. We hope the new video will enable us to exceed our goal of raising £20 million by 2020.

”Ten celebrities are seen auditioning in humorous sketches in front of comedian Asim Chaudhry, as his People Just Do Nothing character Chabuddy G, for a coveted part in the safety video, while simultaneously demonstrating the safety features and procedures on the aircraft.‘

Someone once told me, very early on in my career, that there are 3 ways of delivering work to clients. It can be Great, Fast, or Cheap, but they can never have all 3. Never promise them all 3!

Some of you may know this as the Iron Triangle or the Triple Constraint or some similarly named conundrum. And it is found in all types of business, not just design. It can become quite complicated as you add more layers to it such as project goals, resources, risk, etc. But let’s keep it simple.

- You can get Great work Fast but it won’t be Cheap (it’ll be bloody expensive) - You can get Cheap work Fast but it won’t be any Good (it’ll be shite) - You can get Great work on the Cheap but it won’t be done Fast (I’ll get to it in my spare time)

You can never have Great work Fast and on the Cheap. It doesn’t exist. It’s a myth (like big foot) that clients tell each other they thought they saw once out of the corner of their eye while visiting an agency a few years back (that agency has since gone under).

Colin Harman illustrated it beautifully as a Venn diagram years ago…

However, I just found this rendition of it which is beautifully and simply modeled off an Apple interface. Perfect for a modern interpretation of a very long standing model.

The first sign of Christmas

This was JWT’s Christmas advert for 2015. In an effort to steal away ‘The first sign of Christmas’ from Coca-Cola perhaps. Slightly controversial to say the least since most people mark seeing the Coca-Cola truck as the first sign of Christmas. Others mark the John Lewis Christmas advert as the start of the holiday season. 

What will QualityStreet do next season?

JWT has created a nice little end of the holiday season campaign for Quality Street, ‘What’s in your tin?’.

I really like this idea, probably because my mum used theses tins for all sorts of things once the contents had been devoured. She still uses a tin to store all of the Christmas cards we get (just like the picture above). It’s a nice little insight that keeps the awareness of a holiday treat going into the new year.

Nike Co-Founder Phil Knight Is Stepping Down as Chairman

Knight, currently 76-years-old, will be stepping down from his role as chairman in 2016. He will be replaced by Mark Parker - the brand's current CEO, and will apparently "transfer most of his Nike stock to a limited liability company."

Facebook updates brand mark ever so slightly

Very minimal changes were made to the Facebook brand mark to the point that most people probably won’t even notice. In an attempt to make the company more friend hand approachable the typeface has been changed. The biggest difference is the move from a double-story ‘a’ to single-story ‘a’.

McDonalds introduces bike-friendly drive through packaging

I have to applaud McDonalds for their tireless effort to change their image into a more health-conscious brand. They are really trying. Sadly, most of their efforts only touch on surface issues and arguably the ‘Anti McDonalds’ damage has already been done. But bless them they do try. 

The McBike is an interesting idea and I’m sure it’s a great PR stunt (as Coca-Cola do shamelessly). I’m glad they are making it available in bike heavy cities but it won’t roll out globally. It’s a nice idea but it isn’t viable. And what is with the colour choice?

On a side note, I have never once biked to McDonalds and I doubt I ever will, even if the McBike were on offer. Mostly because if I am going to McDonalds I have hit my low. At that moment I have already given up on achieving anything that day and things like fresh air and exercise and effort are the last things on my mind. If I have decided that I’m going to McDonalds I will figure out the best way to get there while exerting the least amount of effort to do so. I’m getting an uber there AND back.

Heineken - Introducing Subway Symphony

This would be really cool if they can get it to work. Let’s be honest, one of the most stressful parts of any day is getting on the underground. You have to stand in line, push, fight and scrape to get on a train only to be wedged into someone’s armpit for 5 stops. 

Literally anything that brings a smile to that experience has my full support. Best of luck to you James Murphy.

I looked into this a bit further and I also found this -  Reach New York: An Urban Musical Instrument. This was installed in 34th Street/Herald Square subway station back in 1996. It was created by architect and composer Christopher Janney. Doubt it is still there though.
