Least shocking news ever: Joe Manchin is a Republican.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll keep saying it: Democrats need to do as much good as they can while they still can. This necessarily means filibuster reforms. As things stand currently, Republicans need only 50 votes to pass their legislation, while Democrats need 60 votes to override a Republican filibuster. Stop playing by Queensberry rules! Play some smash mouth! Negotiations with Republicans are fucking not more important than delivering racial and economic justice to the people. “Civility” is not the end goal, and “compromise” with a party of racists and neofascists is a losing strategy.

Blaming the Senate Parliamentarian for failing to pass a minimum wage increase, and making plans to pass a Voting Rights bill that even remotely depended on the “good will” of Republicans is a criminal dereliction of duty. It’s foolish to the point that it makes casual observers (future voters) believe that politics is a rigged game, where (corporate, centrist) Democrats are ALL in the tank for big business—not for the people.

And even if the above article is completely wrong, Joe Manchin (and Krysten Sinema) don’t actually need to become Republicans, they are already VOTING like Republicans. The letter behind their name doesn’t really matter.

Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi, if they’re serious, need to strip Manchin and Sinema of all chair positions and credibly threaten to support more progressive primary challengers. But given that Nancy Pelosi has backed a homophobic, anti-abortion “Democrat” like Dan Lipinski—over a pro-choice progressive—well, I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one.

I was just having this conversation with my mom the other day. We were talking about how “means testing” social programs is a scam, because when politicians—Republicans and conservative Democrats—talk about means testing, they really do not want to have the program at all.

Take almost any political argument invoking means testing: welfare, food stamps, education, healthcare…. there are two reasons why arguments to limit “the rich” from gaming the system are bullshit

1) Think of a millionaire or billionaire. Who did you think of? Evil Elon Musk popped into my head, but it doesn’t matter who you thought of—the point is this: are we really supposed to believe that, to “get over” on the system, Elon and Grimes will send their baby, parabolic equation, to a public school, free lunch program? Or that, to save a few bucks, they would go down to the housing office to somehow trick taxpayers into giving them a shitty government apartment?? If you believe that, you’re dumb enough to vote Republican, and I’m sorry but I can’t help you. These people are richer than God. They wouldn’t be caught dead using the same crappy public welfare that poor people have to use to survive. The only time the rich take public subsidies is when it’s direct tax cuts meant only for millionaires and billionaires.

2) For the sake of argument, let’s say that I’m completely wrong about everything I just said above. Let’s agree that Bill Gates really does want to save money on his grocery bill by using an EBT SNAP card at the local Publix. SO FUCKING WHAT? Is it really worth denying food and healthcare to millions and millions of needy people just to stop a few billionaires from “getting over” on the rest of us? Imagine thinking, “Yeah, millions of hungry men, women and children are starving to death, but at least we stopped Elon Musk from getting a free sandwich.” Do the words “Pyrrhic victory” mean anything? Anything at all?

The concept of “means testing” for basic living essentials like food, housing, healthcare and education is a conservative idea intended to make ACCESSING social services unnecessarily difficult.

Honestly. If Jeff fucking Bezos is dumb enough to want to move out of his mansion and live in the public housing I grew up in, let him come move in. If Donald and Melania wanna live off welfare food and government cheese to get over on taxpayers, then let them. But even if a few billionaires want to use these services—and trust me, they don’t—they should still be as close to completely free as is humanly possible.

I’m sorry if I’m bloviating here, but this is one of my pet peeves. Because it’s an argument that is used by Republicans and Democrats every four years when they want to block social programs. So yes, expect to hear it being espoused by conservatives yet again in the run up to the 2024 general elections. Hearing from my elders about how Bill Clinton used precisely this framing as a pretext to gut welfare and harm millions of hungry poor people is gut wrenching.

I totally agree, but I feel like their argument they normally use is more pointed towards "lazy" people who "game the system" for a living. Like these magical welfare queens that are just rolling in your tax dollars bc the government says they can.

They say shit like "why should my taxes go to people who work at McDonald's" but the same people who say this are also the people that say minimum wage shouldn't increase. To them, not being part of the working class is a status symbol. They think they're working harder bc they have a damn office job and that if ppl in the working class really wanted to have the money necessary for living, they could easily find a better job.

And that really boils down to they believe that poverty is necessary for society to function, but being poor is your own fault.

They say, "If you're begging for change on the side of the road, why can't you be out working?" without really thinking about how they may be disabled or have trouble being hired when they don't necessarily have access to a shower, reliable transportation, or a place to launder their clothes.

They question whether a disabled person really needs to be on disability or if they actually need the accommodations they need. Regardless of what they say, most workplaces really don't want the disabled working there lest they need to make accommodations. Some people have undiagnosed disabilities for varying reasons.

They say, "They're wasting my tax dollars" when the military and police force are right there with the most bloated budgets you've ever seen.

There's just so many reasons these programs should be accessible as possible and anyone arguing against that probably just think that poor people deserve less than they do.

No, you’re right, and I absolutely agree with you!

Usually, everything you said is how conservative politicians honestly feel—that being poor is a character flaw. But most of the time, its only Republicans who will straight up say that “welfare queens” and “lazy poor people” (dogwhistles for black and brown people) should have to jump through hoops and do tricks to prove they really, really need assistance. Centrists and Democrats, on the other hand, will use the, “but we don’t want wealthy people like Trump to game the system” rhetoric. I heard that line used in both the 2016 and 2020 Democratic primaries. But here’s the thing: ultimately, they’re BOTH arguing to poke giant holes in the social safety net—they’re just coming at it from opposite sides; on the far right (Republicans), they blatantly say, “those lazy, undeserving poors will abuse the system.” While centrists opt for perniciously trying to convince voters that Elon Musk and Bill Gates might sneak their grandkids to a publicly funded food bank, just to save a few dollars.

But both groups (centrists and Republicans) will always defend using tax dollars for more police, and larger military budgets.
