Hi there!! I was wondering if you knew anything about Zhan Zhao‘s parents from the original novel? Because he only briefly mentioned them during the flashback in episode 29, but never mentioned them again after…and I‘m not familiar with the source material it‘s adapted from in case they did mention his parents there at all :0
It's been a while since I read the original novel, but from what I recall Zhan Zhao's background in the drama is pretty much made up - he didn't meet the Ding family until the he was already titled the Imperial Cat and working for Judge Bao/ Kaifeng Fu. So he didn't grow up learning martial arts from the Dings' father. I don't recall anything in the original novel about him being a scholar (i.e., studying at an academy), either.
By the time he met the Dings, his parents are already dead. In the original novel, when he visits the Dings he mentions that he received Juque as an inheritance from his deceased father. (The Ding brothers' mother is still living in the novel, but their father is deceased. Ding Yuehua is actually their cousin, not sister, but after she is orphaned the Ding mother brought her into their home and treats her like a daughter.) After he spars with Ding Yuehua, the Ding mother arranges their engagement and the sword exchange, saying that she knows Zhan Zhao has no family to arrange his marriage.
Ding Yuehua didn't have a big part in the original novel - she spars with Zhan Zhao, but she's originally kept in the family home the way most girls of good families were at the time, not wandering the jianghu as a heroine. She only meets him because Ding Zhaohui tells her Zhan Zhao insulted her sword/ laughed at the idea of a woman using it (which was a prank by Ding Zhaohui because he wanted her to meet Zhan Zhao) and she comes out to challenge him.

Basically I’m in denial and trying to cope.
@spica-starson !!!!!! the yell i let out rkfnskdndn i love her so much 🥹🥹
she's slaying, probably both metaphorically and literally
This is such a gorgeous scene. And it's so deliberate. She removes the golden hairpins one by one and the wedding headdress, rejecting him, rejecting the position as his wife.
I feel like it's a callback to this scene:
Where he stripped her of the disguise she chose, stripping her of her agency.
But here, she is taking off the disguise herself, revealing her choice to stand with Zhan Zhao, against Prince Xiangyang.
It's such a powerful move.
the subs are... not good but you get the gist of it
you have become an boy who runs errands for Zhan Zhao, and now you want to drag Xiankong dao into it too (something to that effect)
but also this is giving such "don't embarrass me in front of my crush" energy and im here for it 🤣
his brothers know what's up XD
Zhan Zhao Adventures: I've got to give some more lore drop from the original novel: (spoilers through end of drama and, um, the 19th century original novel)
In the original novel, this is where Bai Yutang dies.
He goes alone to investigate Chongxiao Tower, triggers a trap, gets shot full of arrows, and his brothers are informed that his corpse was so badly damaged that it was unidentifiable*.
But in this version, he survives. And the difference?
He didn't go alone.
And in the end, Bai Yutang is saved, because even if he's still the same prideful and temperamental young man from the novel, he now trusts and is trusted by Zhan Zhao, and they go to face the danger together. (And Linglong rallies the cavalry to save the both of them.)
I love this drama because it is filled with deep friendship and love and devotion and how that can be the saving grace in the face of all of the horrors.
*yes, we all know that this gives the writer room to play, since there was no identifiable corpse. And there is some indication the author intended to have Bai Yutang return. But that was the last of his story in the original novel.
Yang Yang as Zhan Zhao, Zhang Ruonan as Huo Linglong and Alen Fang as Bai Yutang in ZHAN ZHAO ADVENTURES (2026)
I still have the two of you. That's enough for me. It feels like I've won. You are lucky you met the two of us. With us by your side, you won't have to suffer anymore. I don't want to be a burden. Burden? Strange word between the three of you. Of course we are going together.
What I love is how equal their relationship is. Bai Yutang is 26 and has been wandering the jianghu since he was 11. Zhan Zhao is somewhere around 29 to early thirties, and is generally acclaimed as one of the best martial artists. Huo Linglong is around 18 or 19, and a complete newbie to the jianghu, yet the two of them, who are famous and respected, experienced old hands, don't treat her like she is a child who needs their guidance. The first thing Bai Yutang says when he meet her is that he thinks she can beat an older, more experienced warrior. Zhan Zhao is protective, yes, but that's his character more than a reflection of how he thinks of her. He respects her choices from the first time he met her and eventually trusts her with his deepest secret.
Each of them at various times has needed the rescue or support of the others, and they just care so much for each other. I find it so interesting, because both xiao-Tang and Prince Hui have taken immense risks for Linglong and have rescued her in times of need, yet it's constant that her worry and devotion and care are centered on Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang.
The gifs above are perfect and show that equality in their relationship - it's not the two experienced jianghu xia and their new sidekick, but three people who trust and depend on each other.
Ahhhhh!!! I love them!!!
Zhan Zhao and his overprotective guard dogs,,,
I couldn't stop thinking about how Bai Yutang and Linglong basically flanking Zhan Zhao the entire Wanshan County arc (esp whenever they went into the city)... 😭🫶💖
Zhan Zhao Adventures: A very short post-canon scene, based on that one terrible translation. Spoilers for the ending.
"-said his name is Zhan Rifei."
She ran.
It didn't matter that it was beneath her dignity as the leader of Linglong Manor. The last Linglong had seen of Zhan Zhao was his battered body being carried away by xiao-Zhao's soldiers, barely getting a chance to touch his cold, limp fingers before he'd been whisked away. She'd prayed every day for him - for him and Bai Yutang, who had been in even worse shape. It looked like Zhan Zhao had bandaged him up, trying to keep him from bleeding out, but his clothes had still been soaked with blood. She hadn't been sure he'd even been alive when they'd found him, his pulse so faint as to barely be perceptible.
But here they both were, alive and upright and even smiling. She wanted to fling herself into their arms, except they still looked a little like a breeze might knock them over. Bai Yutang was leaning heavily on a tall cane, his weight off his right leg, and Zhan Zhao's left arm was in a sling, with his right hand hovering at Bai Yutang's elbow.
"Zhan-dage! B-- Ding-dage!" She cried, just barely remembering the name Bai Yutang had given. She'd received a letter from xiao-Zhao a week ago, explaining that because Bai Yutang had thrown the arrow that killed an imperial uncle, regardless of how evil he had been, he would have to "die." Otherwise the emperor would be considered unfilial, and the killing a threat to imperial power.
"Huo xiao-mei," Bai Yutang quirked a grin at her.
"Linglong," Zhan Zhao nodded, a small smile softening his usual solemnity.
"Come in, come in; you're staying, right?" She felt a little overwhelmed, after so long without them, fearing for their lives, praying every day that they would recover, that the emperor would be able to resist the political pressure and keep them safe, that the emperor would order the imperial physicians to--
"Oh!" She gasped, stopping short. "Zhan-dage, are you well? Did the imperial physicians find a cure?"
Zhan Zhao froze, which left Bai Yutang stuttering to a stop.
Her heart skipped a beat. "Don't tell me that you are still poisoned?!"
Zhan Zhao looked conflicted. Bai Yutang turned his face away.
"You!" She nearly stomped her foot, she felt so infuriated. "Well it's a good thing xiao-Tang is visiting right now; he can -"
Bai Yutang coughed, still looking away. "No, no, it's fine, he's no longer poisoned."
"Oh why didn't you just say so?" She grabbed Zhan Zhao by the shoulders, peering at his face, to make sure he was really and truly cured. He'd lied about it too many times before, but she trusted that Bai Yutang wouldn't lie about Zhan Zhao's health. "Were the imperial physicians able to use the formula Baihuadao gave?"
Zhao Zhao wasn't quite able to meet her eyes. "Mm."
She frowned, starting to get worried again. "What do you mean? Mn? Was it some other cure? Xiao-Tang is going to want to know, so he will be able to reproduce the antidote."
Zhan Zhao's ears were starting to turn red. She frowned harder.
"Ah, Huo xiao-mei, you shouldn't ask him the details, it was my idea and my hard work and effort, really. It was all about the fire element, and, um, generating... heat, in order to overcome the cold poison," Bai Yutang said.
She turned to look at Bai Yutang. Despite his breezy tone, his ears were red, too, and he wasn't meeting her eyes, either.
"Hm, yes, your ... hard ... work. Took some trial and error on your part, though. Your medical skills needed some practice." She turned and narrowed her eyes at Zhan Zhao. His tone there was that earnest bland one that meant he was teasing Bai Yutang about something.
Sure enough, Bai Yutang's hackles went up and he sputtered, "What? You! I didn't think you had any complaints --" he wobbled a bit and Zhan Zhao moved in to support him. The move was practiced and easy, to Linglong's eye. But she also noted how his neck and cheeks were turning pink.
"Let's get you settled in before you start fighting in the courtyard," she herded them towards the family quarters. There was clearly more to this story. But she knew how to be patient. Her heart felt light. They were safe, healthy, and, best of all, home.
She'd get it out of them eventually.

Zhan Zhao Adventures - minor spoiler for episode 35
Ahahahaha!!! Look this is a terrible translation but when I saw this as the antidote for Zhan Zhao's poison I was like, I've read extensively in the Nirvana in Fire fandom, and SVSSS, AND Mysterious Lotus Casebook. I know the cure for a cold poison. I just didn't expect them to say it out loud.👀🔥🔥🔥🔥🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️👀👀
As an aside, the translation of 性热属火 is wrong because they translated the first character 性 in its use as "sex" (性爱) instead of in its use as "base character" (本性), so the translation should be instead that "half of them have the characteristic of heat so they belong to the fire element."
I have no problem taking this and running anyway, since it's a cold poison anyway and the solution is Right There.
(I support any version of this - from platonic cuddling/puppy piling to fuck or die, just please give that man some warmth.)
