Continuing my trolling. (It’s me, I’m Joss)
YA Mystery Appreciation Post
Truly Devious & The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson
So I’m a sucker for a good mystery; I love the character development-within-archetypes, the quick plotting, the twists and turns (I’m terrible at predicting as a reader, so I’m always surprised), the red herring(s), the allusions to other famous mysteries and detectives, and the unique locations.
And these two had it all! I absolutely loved the worldbuilding of Ellingham Academy. It was unique, interesting and well-described. The history and detail of the place was integrated seamlessly into the narrative. The cast of characters were interesting, diverse, mysterious and fit their archetypes well. I loved Stevie, the MC, with her focus and aloofness and anxiety. I could really relate to how her brain worked and her conflicting motivations. Nate and Janelle are worthy BFFs, as is David as a love interest. Did he do it or does he have his own issues??? Only the third book will tell. I also loved the alternating timelines. It was so satisfying as a reader to see the mystery that Stevie is trying to solve unfold.
I read these two in two days. Thank you, snow days!
Side note: These books are what I wished A Study in Charlotte were.

Trolling Netflix after cancelling The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself is my new personality trait. (It’s me, I’m Jos).
Wishing for something to watch. Wanting to watch The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself. Knowing watching would still hurt knowing we’ll never get to see the story’s end.
I GOT A FUCKING RAISE THE POTATO WORKED WTF
Always reblog the potato. 😄
Thinking about how we'll never get to see Gabriel go back to save that boy from mercury
THIS ONE HURTS
Basically.
Just responded to a Netflix story promoting a Wednesday merch giveaway with “No,” so that’s how my morning after The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself cancellation is going.
The way this show had stellar reviews from fans and critics with barely any marketing. I heard about this show from a random tweet. I always knew this was a huge possibility because it was obvious Netflix didn't care if it succeeded. I'm gonna be mad about this for a while.
n o one talk to me .
Watch a show
Got obsessed with it
Netflix canceled
Netflix, in a total Netflix move, canceled The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself.
Was anyone surprised?
I sure as hell wasn't. It's disappointing, obviously, but not at all surprising. This was a show that was not only almost universally praised by both fans and critics but was centered around a black, queer character. Did anyone actually think they were actually going to move forward with it?
I mean, this is how Netflix has operated for years now. Get people hyped up with the possibility of something different and new only to cancel it so that they can pursue a the cheap, easy option.
Netflix wonders why it's losing subscribers.
Why would they expect people to continue to pay for a streaming service that cancels the shows they signed up to watch in the first place.
I’M SORRY DID NETFLIX ALREADY DECIDE NOT TO GO WITH A SECOND SEASON?!
I. AM. DEVASTATED.
Also, this is probably what will drive me to fanfic.
Ok ok ok so I know everyone loves episode 7 because obviously Nathan kisses Gabriel and that is some good fangirl shit right there. But may I present Exhibit B:
Nathan, who has been told his ENTIRE life he is wrong, awful, doesn’t fit in, doesn’t belong, who is recently told his life is only important for the purpose of murder, who only just realized what friendship is and what family can mean and Gabriel just looks at him plainly and tells him his life MATTERS. Gabriel who runs from or forgets everyone he loves, Gabriel who never finishes what he starts, who carries a book remind him of those he loves, who has been groomed and controlled by Mercury in the only life he can remember.
This scene. Gets me every time.
When Nathan says “what, I ain’t important?” And Gabriel just gives him this look like OF COURSE YOU ARE DUMBASS before giving him a pen so that Nathan can obviously write his name in the book. And then of course it’s what cures Mercury’s memory potion.
