I’m home from e hospital after 10 days in SICU and then the normal ICU. I had a kidney infection, necrotic pancreatitis, C. Diff and at one point spiked a fever of 104° and had a nice little ice bath. I had to have a feeding tube. I had to be sedated on morphine. I had to have a catheter. I lost about 30lbs. I spent my 23rd birthday practically in a coma. The hospital was under quarantine because of Coronavirus so I couldn’t see any family while I was there.

I still feel like shit and don’t have an appetite but at least I’m home.

Got a call from the hospital today!! I’ve been exposed to Coronavirus!!!! What fucking good luck I have!!!

And a follow up with my PCP I’ve discovered that I have (hopefully) temporary type 1 diabetes because most of the cells in my pancreas that make insulin were killed off so I’m not making insulin!!!! And I sure as fuck can’t afford it!!

Sorry but this has been such a shitty month and I can’t afford shit and ugh I’m sorry to have to beg like this but I’m running out of options

As someone who’s job is to handle chemicals like this, I need to state that this information is IMPORTANT. Plenty of people have accidentally injured or killed themselves at home because they didn’t know what kind of reaction certain substances have with one another. Play it safe and don’t mix chemicals.

I am from the USA.

I have one of the most top-teir private insurance plans available.

I live in a city with four, count ‘em, FOUR hospitals.

I have been a patient of my pulmonologist for 2 years.

I scheduled my next appointment today. The first available appointment?

In three and a half months.

Please stop with this “you can see a specialist in a week!” Nonsense. No you can’t. Not with elite insurance and not as an existing patient. I’ve had to make specialist appointments as far as 8 months out.

Yesterday I made an appointment with my primary for a somewhat urgent matter. His next available? In 3 weeks.

I hate going to the emergency room because the average wait time is 4-10 hours. I ended up in a coma once because of complications caused by the wait time.

I am in the most medically privileged position a chronically ill person in the US can be, and the wait times to see my doctor are still very very long.

There are people in my country who can’t even afford to go to the doctor and people justify it by saying “but in Canada, they have to ~*wait*~.

We wait here too. We wait JUST AS LONG, and sometimes even LONGER.

But not everyone gets to wait, and they die because of it.

That disgusts me.

Universal health care now, please. And yes, my full time working, disabled, chronically ill self is more than happy to fork over taxes so that nobody goes without healthcare-even the people I don’t like!

As a physician in the US who regularly tries to refer patients to specialty care, I can confirm that we wait here just as long if not longer to see doctors. I myself was just referred to a migraine specialty clinic… my appointment? First available is 5 months away.

Universal health care will do nothing but improve the health of this country. If you don’t get that, I don’t know how to help you.
