A/N:.... I know guys.... I promise I'm working on the next chapter for It's Always Been You. Just another thing that came up in conversation and I had to write it. We can all blame my friend :D
Sylus was cleaning his guns when he had felt it. Suddenly, a rip that shredded through his chest, a pain unimaginable. He had never felt something like that before, a tear through his being; immediate and hollow. An ache, a chill, something was missing, something was wrong.
Immediately he stood up and grabbed his phone. Pressing on your contact he called, straight to voicemail. Then again, no answer. A frustrated panic built itself up inside of him, why wouldn't you answer the phone? Immediately he called Mephisto, ordered him to find you. He paced the inside of his room, ruby eyes darting around; surveying the area, still holding a hand to his aching chest. Telling himself that you were okay, that there could be another reason for this feeling in his chest. The emptiness that hasn't let up.
He glanced down at the phone in his hand, staring at the contact picture you were so adamant on putting. Letting out a heavy sigh, he sat down at the foot of his bed. The seconds passed like minutes. Minutes passed like hours until finally, he heard the mechanical flapping of Mephisto's wings.
His head snapped up, to watch as the mechanical whir of his machines sounded throughout the room. To anyone else, Mephisto's soft caws wouldn't have mattered. But for Sylus, through his interpretations, his world came crashing down. He listened as Mephisto recounted the events, of how he saw the overwhelming amount of ambulances surrounding the area. how he zoomed in and saw, your limp figure laying on the gurney. The way your lifeless eyes stared up at the sky, as if you were still trying to catch a glimpse of something before your final breath.
Through each recount, the empty space you had left behind; grew, festered. Sylus didn't know what to do, what could he do? He felt as if you were ripped out from inside him, and so he looked for answers. He lost himself in trying to come up with any explanation as to why he couldn't feel your existence anymore— as if you were never there.
Days passed slowly, each moment filled with unanswered questions. He had recurring nightmares. Images his subconscious created to torture him. He had enough information about what you looked like when you died but he punished himself with it. Creating scenarios where he could have saved you, been there for you…. fought for you. And his mind always came back to; if you died…. Why didn't he? They were supposed to be connected, bonded— souls bound together by a curse only lifted from your hand.
Luke and Kieran watched as Sylus, their boss, their father figure lost any semblance of light that he had gained from you. They tried to make him feel better, through their jokes, but there wasn't even a flicker of amusement in his crimson eyes. He had never felt emptier, he knew there was something wrong. Knew from their soul ties that he should still be able to feel her —reborn.
Sylus walked to his gym, pulling on his boxing gloves— and he was gone. He stayed there for hours, to the point of the gloves no longer protecting his hands. Luke and Kieran went searching for him, following the sound of grunts and broken sobs. The heavy sound of the punching bag resounded in the room as he dealt each blow. They paused, glancing at each other. They had never seen him like this— Sylus was always someone who kept his cool. Shielding himself with his hard exterior. It wasn't till he dropped down to his knees from exhaustion that they rushed towards him.
"Boss!" they yelled out, immediately crouching down next to him. Their voices sounded fuzzy, white noise filling his ears. He grunted, his despair palpable. Sylus was never the kind to show his emotions— unless it was you.
"I'm fine." he rasped out, pushing them away. They both stared at him incredulously , "Boss…" Luke trailed off, turning to Kieran. Neither of them knew what to do, of course Sylus has always had a soft spot for you. A romantic straight to the core, patient, gentle. But this, it broke him. It felt like a shard embedded itself deeper into his chest the more he tried to figure out what was wrong. The irony— he could almost laugh.
This wasn't how it was supposed to go, he was supposed to follow you everywhere. He staggered, gripping the wall as he walked back to his room. Luke and Kieran followed slowly, silent. Watching as Sylus stepped into his room, slowly closing the door behind him. They sighed, glancing at each other and walked away. He stood there in silence, thinking of the times you filled the space with your laughter, your love. Dull eyes flicked across the space you once shared, lingering on things you had left behind. He slowly turned, making his way into the shower. Feeling the water running down his body, made him think that this is something you would no longer be able to feel. And so he continued spiraling, scalding hot water hitting his back as he continued brewing on the stubbornness of his own mind. The lump in his throat that hasn't let up since he had found out what had happened to you was beginning to overwhelm him.
Clutching at his chest, a sob broke through. Tears blended into the water as they slipped down his cheeks. Grieving you, grieving the idea that he'd never see you again; now and in the future.
Was he meant to live eternity without you? He couldn't feel you anymore, the warm tendrils of your soul, threading itself into his own being— no longer there. You left behind something he could never fill, an abyss that would consume him. And no matter how many times he would try to take his own breath, end the pain that now embodied him; everything stayed the same.
Time would continue to pass, and each day he would hope for a glimmer of your soul, something that could tell him that you were still out there. Waiting for him with open arms. His efforts would be in vain, for he was made to suffer eternally without your warmth. Forever searching in his own memories for glimpses of you.

A/N: ... So I know this is major angst but I had to get it out of my system. I wrote this all in one day (as you can tell) but i'll definitely get back to writing the next chapter for Its always been you. I'm nearing finals and so this week has just been... hectic. This was like a small moment of freedom before working on assignments again. Anyways, hope you guys like it!
______________
Rafayel wasn't sure when he began to lose his sight, it was something that happened slowly, and then all at once. At first it was lights becoming a little brighter, each one flashing like stars. Then he couldn't see far away anymore, straining his eyes just to look a little further. When he began to notice this change, a small seed of panic implanted itself deep in his conscious, After all, his career relied on his eyes. But that wasn't what he cared about, no, it was something much more complicated than that.
You had suggested you both go and learn how to make pots; a way to use his hands for something else other than painting. And hey, if there's an option of not having to go buy extra cups or plates? then that would just be a plus. At first, Rafayel wasn't interested— sure he loved the arts, but it wasn't the same as holding a paint brush in your hand. You could say he was always going to be just a little bit biased. It wasn't until he experienced it, the soft clay molding to the movement of his hands, the coldness seeping into his skin as he formed something new. A delicacy he didn't know he needed in order to make a simple cup. And gods the sense of accomplishment after firing it, turning the cup over in his hands, the glaze catching into the fluorescent lights in the studio. He turned towards you, a slightly blurry vision of you and grinned, holding the cup high in his hands.
After that, Rafayel had got really into sculpture, what else could he possibly make with clay? The possibilities were endless! If he could make a cup out of a piece of clay, who's to stop him from creating something bigger. He started with simple things, then gradually worked his way up and began to try to sculpt things around him; a larger version of reddie, more abstract forms, things that he couldn't bring himself to explain to you even if he tried. And you were always there, smiling softly at him, watching as he loses himself in another medium.
There came a point where Rafayel's vision was beginning to affect his everyday life, colors blurring together, what used to be exact shapes turned into blobs— an absence of form. After going to the doctor when it had started, and they told him "Unfortunately, this is something we simply can't fix. Surgery on your eyes would be too high of a risk and I think it would be better if we just connect you to someone who would make living your life a little easier." The doctor smiled apologetically —well at least according to you. He gripped your hand a little tighter that day, smiled tightly and simply responded, "Okay."
After that, he began to learn brail and tried to focus more on his other senses. Things he was grateful he still had, but the thing that frustrated him the most… was that he could no longer see you. As close as he got, he couldn't make out your features anymore, there were times when you caught him staring in your direction with brows furrowed. It became Rafayel's nightmare, thinking it would be better if you had forgot him entirely because at least then… he could still see you.
One day after coming home from work, you walked into the house to see Rafayel hunched over, head buried in between his knees, soft sniffles surrounding his space. You reached for him, lightly placing a hand on his back. "Hey, what's wrong?" you asked, dropping down to your knees, hand rubbing back and forth. Rafayel cleared his throat, turning his head to look the other way, "Nothing." he whispered back. Frowning you crawled in front of him, taking on of his hands in your own. His bottom lip wobbled, pretty pink purple eyes filling with tears, threatening to spill once again. Quickly he wiped his eyes with the sleeve of his sweater. You reached forward, cradling his face with both hands "Please talk to me, what can I do to make it better?" you asked softly, worry in your voice. He shook his head, "It's stupid."
"No, don't say that. Whatever is making you feel like this isn't stupid."
You both sat in silence for a while before Rafayel spoke again, "I don't want to forget you." his voice broke, new tears welling in his eyes, quickly falling after each other. You felt your heart squeeze, tears beginning to form in your own eyes but you held them back. You had to be strong— for him. "No no no, you won't forget me." You cooed, quickly wiping away the tears rolling down his cheeks. His chest quickly rose up and down, soft sobs overtaking him. Grabbing his hands you raised them up to your own cheeks. "If you can't see me, then you can feel me. This will be how you remember me." you whispered, softly gazing at his unfocused eyes. And so he traced your features, etching each of them into the pads of his fingers. Remembering the slope of your nose, the softness of your cheeks. The way each feature was placed on your face and it was almost as if he could see you again. He took his time, brows furrowed in concentration, stray tears falling from his eyes. And so it was engraved into his memory… until it wasn't.
_________
It was a year after that, both of you had spent a lot of time like this, where he just wanted to feel you, to remember what you looked like. Often times this would turn into soft kisses, your reassurance and his sadness was familiar. But one night you didn't come home. At first he wasn't worried, there were times when you would come home late. But the time ticked by, he would ask his phone what time it was and then an hour passed, then it was two, three. He sat anxiously on the couch, biting his fingernails until suddenly the silence was broken by the sound of his phone ringing. Immediately he grabbed it, "Hello?"
"Hello, is this Rafayel speaking?"
His heartbeat rose, "Yes this is he."
"First, are you in a place that you can speak freely, or are able to sit down."
"yes." he breathed out, his heart beating maniacally in his chest.
"Good, so we decided to contact you because a ms. y/n had you listed as an emergency contact. Unfortunately, there has been an accident while she had gone on a mission. The hunters association is currently investigating everything but I need to tell you that… she was pronounced dead at the scene."
White noise, that's all he could hear. He was sure whoever was on the other end of the phone was talking to him but he couldn't think, couldn't speak. The love of his life, gone just like that. His heart fell to the pit of his stomach, a pain completely unimaginable. He clutched at his chest, silent sobs as his face scrunched in despair.
________
It had been a month after you had passed away. Rafayel couldn't do anything anymore, he couldn't bring himself to care. Thomas was constantly checking on him, but what he saw was instead a shell of someone he knew. The life was sucked out of his eyes, there were times where he would sit there with his eyes closed. He asked him why one time, "Because it's better than pretending that I can see." he muttered. Thomas didn't know what to do, he didn't want to force him to paint again, and so he let him be. As months ticked by, nothing changed. All Rafayel could do was sleep, eat (because he was forced to), shower, repeat. The pain became a little easier to bare however, but the memory of you was fading. And so after 10 months had passed, he sat down, a new block of clay in front of him.
He molded the shape from memory, already beginning to create the semblance of a bust. When he got to molding the facial features however, he paused. The dull ache that was in his heart worsening when he tried to remember what your face felt like. And so he dipped his fingers, mind flicking back to the memories he had of you, his hands gradually working faster as he began to realize… he couldn't do it. Not that he wouldn't… he actually couldn't. He ran his fingers down the faceless bust, the silence was deafening. All he could feel were these jagged bumps, nothing in resemblance to you. He let out a cry, dropping his head. Broken sobs echoed all over the house. What was once your warm skin, was now the cold clay covering his hands. An emptiness that could never be filled with the life you once held.

The sound of the waves crashing sounded throughout Rafayel’s living room. The windows opened, letting in the cool breeze and the smell of the sea. Distant cries of the seagulls and the sound of Rafayel’s paintbrush pressing against the canvas. The sound of pages turning every couple of minutes helped fill in the silence. These were your favorite moments, where both of you can get lost in your own thing. Your eyes slowly started closing, comforted by the warm sensation of the sun. The book in your hand slowly fell as the grip you had loosened, before it finally dropped against the carpet.
Rafayel turned towards the sound, an amused smile pulled at his lips at the sight of you. Getting off of his stool he placed the paintbrush onto the palette, wiping his hands against his pants. He made his way towards you before slowly crouching down next to your sleeping figure. He picked up the book from the floor, setting it down on the side table, “Pfft, guess you were still tired, cutie.”, he brushed your hair to the side, smiling softly at your parted lips. He stayed there, admiring you as you slept.
Taking in the way your eyebrows scrunched a little, the soft breaths you were taking as you succumbed into deep sleep. Finally he stood up, lifting you up from the couch and headed towards the bedroom. Unconsciously you pressed yourself closer to him, chasing the warmth that his body was providing. He chuckled softly, slowly lowering you down onto the bed before lying down next to you. Rafayel pulled you closer, draping an arm over your waist and running his hand down the length of your back. There were times just like this, where the both of you found comfort in each other. He would never admit it but —these were the moments that were his favorite, where you both lay silently and he got to admire every single thing about you.
The way your chest rose and fell with each breath you took, the way the wind caressed your skin in the way he wishes he could every day. Slowly his eyelids fluttered closed, fading away to the sound of the waves crashing on the shore and the certainty of you being next to him when he woke up. As the sun began to set, you started stirring in your place, reaching a hand out in front of you. Slowly you opened your eyes to find Rafayel laying next to you, his hand covering your own.
Smiling softly, you reached up to brush the fringe out of his face. Rafayel’s eyes opened, an amused smile taking over his lips. “Are you stalking me?” he asked, a playful glint in his eyes. You rolled your eyes, shoving him away “Go away.” He laughed, pulling you into his arms. Nuzzling his face into your neck, his warm breath tickling you. Squirming, you tried pushing him away again but to no avail, he strengthened his grip, pressing a soft kiss at your collarbone. Sighing softly you relaxed in his arms, reaching up and stroking the back of his head. You both laid there in silence once again, basking in each other.
You knew there was a clingy ness to Rafayel, it was one of his adorable traits (despite the fact that he'd deny it). But laying with him here, pressed against the warmth of his body made you just want to stay here forever. He brought out of you this cuteness aggression that you'd get when you see cats (much to his dismay), but you always restrained yourself. Your eyes flicked across his face, his eyes had fluttered closed once again. Your traced the lines of his face with your finger, softly dragging it down the bridge of his nose, to the edge of his lips.
A soft smile betrayed him but his eyes remained closed. Slowly, you leaned forward, closing the space between the both of you and pressing your lips against his. Rafayel immediately responded, tightening his grip, one hand reaching to cup the back of your head, his long fingers threading through your hair. You both moved in sync, your tongue softly licking his bottom lip. You felt him smile against your lips, he pulled away, pressing another chaste kiss on your swollen lips. You huffed in disappointment, opening your eyes to Rafayel's amused face.
"As much fun as this was cutie, I actually do have to finish my painting by tonight." he mumbled, brushing your hair away from your face. You raised an eyebrow at this, "Oh now you care about meeting deadlines."
Rafayel smirked, untangling himself from you and getting up off the bed. "I don't know what you mean." he feigned ignorance and walked out, shooting you a smug smile over his shoulder. Shaking your head softly, you chuckled flopping back down onto the pillow.

Chapter 5 | Previous part here!
“Don’t tell me you’re seriously going to wear that on your date?” Gideon watched Caleb as he adjusted his necklace in the mirror. He rolled his eyes, “We’re just going for a couple drinks, not like I need to be dressed to the nines.” Turning around to face him he gave him a pointed look.
Gideon raised his hands in defense, “Alright, but don’t come crying when you don’t get scouted for vogue.” Caleb chuckled, shaking his head.
“So out of pure curiosity, what bar are you guys going to?” Gideon asked, leaning forward, blinking innocently. Caleb glanced at him, “The one down in Eden.” he replied, shrugging on his jacket. Gideon nodded, nonchalantly grabbing his phone.
“Alright, I’ll see you later then.” Caleb waved, stepping out of the door. Gideon grinned, waving back. His smile wiping off the second the door closed. The second his phone started ringing he picked up, “So we’re going right?” he asked, already beginning to get up from his bed.
“Uhm duh.” MC replied, already beginning to text Zayne. “We’re not gonna miss this once in a lifetime opportunity, besides– what are the odds that someone else shows some interest in Zayne while Caleb’s looking.” She said, a mischievous grin beginning to form on Gideon's face.
“I just love it when you get devious.” MC laughed before replying, “I’ll let you know when me and the snowman are there.”
—
It wasn’t until Caleb reached the bar that he realized what he was doing. Going on a date for the first time with someone he doesn’t like. But then again… isn't it almost the same as a blind date? Caleb could almost laugh at how absurd this really is, going on a date as a favor for a friend to get more experience dating…
Pushing open the heavy wooden door, he was immediately greeted by the sounds of people laughing, all enjoying the convivial ambience of the bar. It smelled of cigarettes, the heady scent of colognes and perfumes mixed together wafted around. He looked around, already beginning to feel overwhelmed before he saw a girl waving at him from a booth.
Making his way towards her, he smiled politely before sitting down across from her. "Hey." he greeted, she smiled shyly brushing her hair out of her face.
"Hi… you know…when Enzo told me that he asked you out on my behalf I think I almost died of embarrassment." she laughed awkwardly, ringing the sleeves of her shirt. Caleb smiled politely, "Don't worry about it, Enzo has always been…persistent." Leaning back on the plush seat she nodded.
"So… can I ask how you even… know me? I don't think we've had any classes together or anything."
"Well, you see … I just remember seeing you hanging out with Enzo so it's kind of those situations where you notice someone for the first time and then you just start to see them everywhere after." she laughed awkwardly, eyes flicking nervously between his face and the rest of the bar. Caleb nodded, he understood what she was saying, he had been seeing a lot of Zayne so it was understandable that even without meaning to, you just end up having more interest in the person. Not that he's showing more interest in Zayne but, it was hard not to think about him when he shows up so often.
"So, why did you agree to the date then?" she asked, leaning forward. Her brown eyes twinkled with curiosity, Caleb chuckled.
"Can I be honest?" he asked, she nodded in reply.
Sighing heavily, "I've never been on a date before so I just thought … what's the harm in trying you know?"
She looked at him shocked, "What do you mean you've never been on a date before?" she whispered. Caleb laughed softly already beginning to feel a bit flustered.
"Have you seen yourself? I'm sure you have other admirers, no I KNOW you have more admirers."
"I don't know, I guess I just never really paid attention to it." he shrugged, a light smile on his face. Ruby stared at him incredulously, but now she had a burning question.
"So have you ever had a crush on someone?"
Caleb pursed his lips in thought, leaning back on the booth. Has he ever had a crush on someone? Sure, who hasn't? But when he thinks back to the people he thought were attractive, they were all in passing. People he never saw again and he himself had no interest in chasing them.
"I…I'm not sure."
Ruby laughed in shock, Caleb huffed lightly, "It's not weird."
Shaking her head, "No no, I didn't mean to laugh but how do you not know?"
Caleb shrugged, "Well, why don't you tell me, what does a crush feel like?" Crossing his arms over his chest he raised an eyebrow.
Ruby smirked, resting her chin on her hand, "Having a crush feels complicated."
She continued, "It's this feeling you get in your stomach, the butterflies and the rush of seeing them. You think about them everyday despite not even meaning to, 'what are they doing? have they eaten? ' but it also brings out something petty in you." Caleb furrowed his brows at that.
She laughed, "When you see them with another person there's this unjustified jealousy. You're not anything to them and yet, you don't want them to look at others in the way you look at them." She looked at Caleb who held a contemplative look in his eyes as soon as she started talking.
"They make you feel nervous in a way that can be exhausting and yet, it doesn't stop you from wanting to see them, even if it's just a glimpse of them." Caleb opened his mouth before closing it again, was liking someone really that complicated? She smiled lightly, "We can keep talking about this but I'm gonna need a drink."
"Yeah-.. uh yeah sure, what do you want, I'll go get it." already beginning to push himself out of the booth. She was already beginning to protest before he stopped her.
"It's the least I can do, I have to compensate for me being a terrible date." he said teasingly, she laughed before nodding. "Then.. can I just get a mojito?" he nodded before turning around and heading towards the bar. Caleb leaned against the bar and ordered two drinks for them, before looking around. He took in the energy that was oozing out of everyone. Some already beginning to show signs of being drunk and others huddled together as if they were sharing secrets. His eyes passed over the area again before he saw someone that looked eerily similar to Gideon just downing a bunch of shots. Squinting his eyes, his eyes flicked between the rest of the people at the table before his eyes landed on Zayne.
He was sitting next to MC, just nodding at whatever she was saying but what caught his attention was the fact that there was someone else next to him. Someone he had never seen before. He looked to be tall, sporting a smirk on his face and he had his arm wrapped around Zayne's shoulders.
"Here you go." he was broken out of his trance, he smiled politely before grabbing the drinks and looking back at the table where they were. With shoulders tensed he made his way back to the booth where Ruby was. She smiled at him and grabbed the drink from his hands.
"Can I sit here?" he asked but he was already sitting himself down on the spot next to her. She stuttered out a laugh "I mean sure ,but what happened?"
"Huh?" he asked before looking straight back at the table where Zayne was sitting. From the booth where he was at, he had a nearly perfect view of where Gideon, MC and Zayne were sitting with some random guy. He grit his teeth at the sight of this white haired man leaning all over Zayne as if he knew him. Well…did he know him?
"Did you wanna keep talking—" Caleb cut her off, "Can you believe them?" he scoffed. Ruby looked at him confused before turning to see what he was looking at.
Her eyes scanned the surrounding area before they landed on one familiar face, she had seen Caleb's friend before. Furrowing her brows she glanced at Caleb out of the corner of her eye, noting that his jaw was clenched. "What's wrong?" she asked, turning her body so she can lean against the wall behind her. Caleb sighed, slumping in his seat.
"My friends probably followed me here because of… our date." Caleb tossed his head back and groaned. "I'm sorry, I promise that I'm usually not like this." She smiled lightly before placing a hand on his shoulder, "Caleb, honestly don't worry about it. We don't have to call this a date anymore, it can just be… two people hanging out."
Caleb nodded, a small hint of relief flooding through him. "I'm so sorry Ruby, I mean from the time that we spent together I can honestly tell you that you're actually a pretty cool person." Ruby threw her head back and laughed.
"What?" he asked, confused as to why she was laughing. She shook her head still giggling. "I just thought, how funny that a date is what got me closer to you but not in the way I had wanted."
Caleb pursed his lips before releasing out a small laugh. It really was absurd when you think about it. Since this was Caleb's first date it wasn't entirely a disaster. Even if it didn't necessarily go the way they're "supposed" to; he made a friend out of it, and that's good enough. Caleb's eyes flicked back to the table where Zayne was, they both made eye contact for a split second. It felt like the world had slowed down. Gone was the music that was playing over the speakers, everything sounded muffled, and he felt like he was drowning. Zayne broke his gaze, smiling softly at something MC had said. Caleb's eyes flicked to look at MC who was sipping on sn unnaturally large drink. She looked around the room before they landed on Caleb who was already staring at her with an unreadable look on his face. She smiled cheekily, purposefully glancing at Zayne.
"So who do you like from that table?" Ruby broke him from his trance, he turned to look at her shocked. "I-I don't-" she cut him off, "Don't give me that, I can see it that you like someone over there so nooowww, I'm just gonna have to guess." she smirked, subtly glancing around the table. She tapped a finger against her lips, "Hmmm, I doubt it's him." she said jutting her head in the direction to where Gideon was face down on the table. He smiled amused, "What makes you so sure?"
She leaned forward in his space, "Because he left earlier and you were still glaring at someone in that table." she grinned at Caleb's eyes growing wide for a split second. Caleb shifted in his seat, "Whatever." he mumbled, avoiding her gaze. She leaned back again, looking back towards the table, eyes flicking between two people. Tilting her head slightly looked at the girl who was sipping a drink out a fishbowl and then she looked at the guy next to her. He was beautiful in a way that you didn't want to touch him. But she noticed that he had someone wrapped around him.
"It's him." she said simply, lazily looking back at Caleb who sputtered.
"Zayne? no, absolutely not."
"Why not?"
"Well… because…"
"Becauuusseee?" she dragged out, raising an eyebrow.
Caleb cleared his throat, looking back and forth between Zayne and Ruby. He shrugged, "He's not my type."
Ruby scoffed, "Oh please, he's everybody's type." Caleb snapped his head toward her. "What does that mean?"
Ruby shrugged, leaning he head against the plush seat of the booth. "He's pretty to look at… you can tell he has this whole mysterious thing going for him. Plus! I've always liked the silent types." Caleb crossed his arms over his chest, "What's so good about being silent." he muttered under his breath.
"Well if you don't want him, can I have him?" Ruby asked, a slow smile pulled at her lips as she watched him slowly turn his head towards her.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because."
"You really need to let go of the because if you're not gonna give a reason." she sang out, laughing lightly at his tense expression.
He stayed silent, not really knowing what to say. Ruby looked at him, amused at the fact that he couldn't come up with a single answer. Caleb shifted in his seat, twirling the straw in his drink. Ruby groaned out loud, tossing her head back. "It's fun to tease you but come on Caleb. Give me ONE reason why I can't go over there and flirt with him."
"Like you'd be able to, you have a pretty bad track record." Caleb smirked. Ruby let out a dramatic gasp, "Hey! cut me some slack okay… you can be pretty intimidating." mumbling out the last part.
"Anyways, my point is that you clearly harbor some sort of feelings for him right? Tell me honestly, would you have the same reaction towards any of your other friends? " She asked, giving him a pointed look. His purple eyes flickered between her and back to Zayne. He had never thought of it actually, and he especially didn't really care if MC or Gideon were dating anybody. So if two plus two equals four….
Caleb started laughing awkwardly, the tips of his ears slowly turning red. She smirked, taking a sip of her drink. "It's okay Caleb, you can be in denial for now. But at some point you gotta accept it."
"Alright, I think we should go." Caleb said abruptly, standing up from the booth. Ruby sighed, a slow smile pulling at her lips. She scoot herself out of the booth, taking Caleb's outstretched hand.
"I would say let me buy you a coffee but from the looks of you…" she trailed off, following after Caleb. Both of them were immediately greeted by the cold air as Caleb had pulled open the door. Caleb shook his head, "I think we should call it a night." she nodded. They both walked in silence for a bit, Caleb having so many unanswered questions in his mind. Well, they did have an answer but he was choosing to ignore it.
After a couple of minutes, they both stopped in front of the girls dorms. "Thanks for walking me." Ruby said, smiling. Caleb nodded, "Thanks for the conversation." he replied.
She laughed out loud, tossing her head back. "Now you have to let me know how it goes."
"How what goes?"
"When you tell him how you feel." she giggled before turning around and walking into the building. Caleb stared after her now filled with new thoughts, new questions. Honestly, Caleb didn't really expect much out of the date but had you told him that he would get a therapy session from her on the conversation of dating… well he would've laughed in your face.
Caleb began his walk back to his dorms, shivering slightly as the cold nipped away at his hands. With so much new material to think about, he remembered the way Zayne was clung to by that guy. Who the hell was he anyways? Caleb scoffed to himself. Now that he's out of the bar he's wondering if he should've stayed to see where they went. Caleb turned a corner in the direction to the bar, mostly just to see if he forgot something (he didn't). Greeted by the sight of couples leaning outside of the bar, he pulled open the door once again, immediately glancing around trying to get a glimpse of raven hair.
He scanned every table and found nothing, not even Gideon or MC. There should be some sort of relief settling in him but the idea that Zayne left with that guy from earlier was eating away at him. Biting his lip, he turned back around and headed straight for his dorm.
After a totally casual (brisk) walk back he opened the door to his room to find Gideon laying face down on his bed. Completely knocked out and drooling all over the place. Quickly he made his way to him and shook his shoulder, only to receive no response. Caleb annoyed with him, "Gideon." he said and shook him again.
Gideon groaned in response, turning his head towards the other side. Caleb tossed his head back and rolled his eyes before shaking him harder. Gideon grumbled, "What do you want?"
"Where's Zayne?" Caleb asked
"I don't know." he mumbled out, his eyes fluttering closed again. Running a hand through his hair, he quickly pulled his phone out of his pocket. It was almost as if his brain was running on autopilot, before his finger hovered over the call button on Zayne's contact.
—————-
"Why are we going here again?" Zayne asked, shoving his hands in his oversized coat. MC sighed playfully, "So you can get out more, tell me honestly if you've ever spent time out like this." Zayne stared at her with an unimpressed look on his face. Gideon continued walking ahead of them, his head alternating between looking down at his phone and the buildings around them.
Suddenly, Gideon's head snapped up, pointed in the direction of a bar that was dimly lit, patrons flowing in and out of it with ease. "It's over there!" already speed-walking towards it. MC grinned, looping her arm with Zayne's, "Let's go."
They all made their way inside the building, Gideon already directing himself towards the bar. Zayne looked around, while MC tugged him towards an empty booth. They both took a seat, Zayne shrugging off his coat. His hazel eyes flicked around the bar before they finally landed on Caleb. He paused in his spot, slowly side eyeing MC who was adjusting herself to sit next to him. "MC…" he trailed off, she let out a hm in acknowledgement , "Is there any..particular reason as to why we're at the same bar as Caleb?" he raised a brow, turning his head to look at her. MC laughed nervously, "Well you see.. so… this bar is the only one that serves nachos.. yeah!" she nodded trying to convince him.
"Right…"
Gideon made his way towards them, cradling three glasses in his hands. "Alright so I got a shirley temple for the princess, a soda for youuu." he sang out, pushing it towards MC. Zayne looked down at the red fizzy drink confused, "What's this?" he asked, looking up at Gideon.
He stared at him blankly, "What do you mean?"
Zayne glanced back down before looking back up again and pointing at it, "This… what is it?"
He blinked, "A Shirley temple… you know a ginger ale with grenadine…" he trailed off, speaking slowly as if he was talking to a child. Zayne nodded, "I've never had it before."
"You like sweet stuff so this is right up your ally." MC said, taking a sip of her drink. Zayne took a small sip of the drink, immediately being hit by the sweet cherry and fizzy-ness. Letting out a hum of approval he took a larger sip before speaking again. "So who's gonna tell me why exactly we're in the same bar as Caleb while he's on his date."
Gideon looked over at the booth where he was sitting with the fore mentioned girl before looking back at Zayne. "Oh were they there? I didn't even notice." Zayne sat there unamused, he didn't want to crash his date. If anything he would rather not see him on a date at all, but there he was all dressed up and smiling. Zayne couldn't help but wonder what she was saying to make him smile like that, or did he like her? Was he attracted to her? He shook his head lightly to stop himself from spiraling but the longer he looked at them…the more he saw how well they got along…. He couldn't look away, a heaviness settling in his heart. Forcing himself to look away he looked down at his hands, settling them down on his lap. He knew he told him to go on the date, but seeing him there with her embedded a pain sharp like ice in his heart.
"So Zayne, what would your ideal date be?" Gideon asked, leaning on one hand. Tilting his head to the side, he thought about the question. He had never been one to imagine such scenarios but with Caleb, anywhere is fine as long as he would be with him. Clearing his throat, "I haven't thought about it." MC glanced at him, crossing her arms over her chest and leaning back. Staring at him she contemplated the faraway look in his hazel eyes. It's always been there, like he was somewhere else.
Her lips parted, about to ask him something when she got cut off by a deep voice. "I never thought I'd see the day." his mellow voice causing everybody to look up, being met by piercing red eyes and a smirk playing at his lips. Gideon and MC stared at him while Zayne sighed heavily. "I didn't come here out of my own volition." Zayne regarded him with a serious look. The man chuckled, "Of course you didn't." he stepped towards Gideon, "Do you mind if I sit next to frosty here? " He raised his eyebrow expectantly, Gideon shook his head immediately, quickly standing up.
"I'll go get you a drink, is there anything you like?" Gideon asked, Zayne furrowed his brows, already opening his mouth to protest but the man beside him chuckled, an amusement simmering in his crimson eyes. "How about you get a round of shots and for me, a lemonade with a shot of rum in it." he said, leaning back. Gideon quickly nodded, practically running towards the bar.
"You didn't need to tease him." Zayne muttered. MC glanced between the two of them, her eyes wide at how handsome the man was. His crimson eyes flicked to look at her, "And who's this kitten."
"MC this is Sylus, Sylus this is MC. She's a friend of mine and Sylus is someone I know " Zayne introduced them quickly, taking another sip of his drink. Sylus rest his arm behind Zayne, "So , who dragged him here?" he asked, eyes half lidded, the corner of his lips quirking up. MC looked between the both of them, they were physically polar opposites of each other in every sense of the word. "I did." MC responded, holding his gaze.
"Interesting."
"What are you doing here Sylus, this isn't exactly your scene either."
"No?"
"No."
Sylus chuckled, reaching to pat his shoulder. "Don't you worry about me pretty bird." Zayne stares at him with no emotion. Sylus then began to strike a conversation with MC, Zayne tuned it out completely. His gaze now stuck on watching Caleb and the girl. His trance was broken however when Gideon came back with the drinks, quickly placing them around the table. He couldn't help but feel bad, here he was going back and forth between the bar and the table. Zayne wasn't really listening anymore, everything had melded together and he focused on the bracelet he was wearing. twirling the bead between two fingers, a hand clasped over his own. Slowly looking up he met Sylus' eyes, they were always so interesting to look at. Completely unusual and yet, they were beautiful in a way. Sylus was always full of secrets, never one to express himself to anybody. And here he sees amusement but there was also a hint of concern embedded in them.
"How are your classes?" Sylus asked instead, which pretty much meant; "How are you feeling?"
"They're fine." he answered, his eyes flicking to look at Gideon who now seemed to have been completely intoxicated. Sighing heavily he tapped MC, "I think we should take him to his room." MC looked at him before dragging her eyes to Gideon who was now sporting a heavy blush on his cheeks. Groaning, "Bruh…are you serious?" she pulled out a magazine from her bag, rolling it up. "Get it together Geo." leaning over the table and smacking him with it. Gideon scoffed, bringing his arms up to cover his head. Zayne and Sylus watched amused as she continued berating Gideon for getting drunk off of two shots. Zayne glanced up, unexpectedly making eye contact with Caleb, quickly looking away he focused on his two fighting friends in front of him.
"I think we should get him a water." Zayne reached out, slowly taking the rolled up magazine from her hands. MC huffed, scooting out of the booth and going to get it. "I would say he's worse than you but…" Sylus trailed off, a teasing smile on his lips.
"Everybody has a different alcohol tolerance, mine just so happens to be low."
"extremely low." Sylus chuckled, Zayne talked over him, "My point is that Genetics are a large factor in alcohol tolerance, theoretically yes you can build it up over time but-" , Sylus cut him off , "I get it, there's no need for the lecture."
A silence settled over them, a large part of Zayne was itching to look back at the booth where Caleb was sitting but he knew better than to torture himself.
"So why are you really here?" Sylus broke the silence, a serious look on his face as he turned his head to look at him. Crimson eyes piercing Hazel green. Zayne shook his head and sighed, "I guess they thought I don't get out much."
"You don't"
Zayne didn't really know how to respond to that because it's true. He liked spending most of his time researching things, sharpening his skills as best as he can. Sure he could indulge in some fun here and there but Zayne was what you might call… a workaholic. However, lately that's not really true. Thanks to MC and Gideon's constant meddling (yes he's aware), he's been out more now than he has been in the past year.
"I remember I had to bribe you once to come with me to pick up some papers."
"Yeah well who wants to go pick up papers." Zayne retorted, glancing up as MC set a glass of water down in front of Gideon. They all watched as he downed the drink, setting the glass down on the table heavily. Zayne couldn't help but chuckle at the absurdity of it all.
"Alright, let's get him home." MC announced, resting her hands on her hips looking between both of the men in front of her. They both stared back, Zayne already beginning to step out of the booth, shrugging on his coat. Sylus followed after him, "I'll help hold him, you get his other side frosty." Nodding they both grabbed each of Gideon's arms and rested them on their shoulders.
"Can't believe we have to take care of this dumb ass." MC muttered annoyed, trudging to push open the door. Zayne quirked a smile at that, shaking his head lightly. They all began their walk back to the dorms, MC ahead of them swinging her arms. Of course, you could only go so fast with a drunk (after two shots) person who's stumbling around all over the place. Walking in silence, save for Gideon's nonsensical mumbling every couple of minutes, Zayne now began to think if Caleb and his date were still there, a lump formed at his throat. Spending some time in the freezing cold, carrying someone quickly became something Zayne never wanted to do again. Finally reaching his room they stared at the door knob and then back to Gideon who was slowly beginning to fall asleep.
"Yo, where are your keys." MC asked, turning to face him. "Huh?" Gideon mumbled out, eyes half lidded. "Your keys bro, your keyss, where are they?" Gideon clumsily reached into his pocket, pulling them out and handing it to her. MC opened the door and they all shoveled inside, Zayne taking the lead and dropping him on his bed. They all stared at him, before Zayne spoke up, "I'll stay here with him until Caleb comes back." Sylus and MC turned towards him, MC nodded already beginning to head towards the door. "I'll text you." she waved goodbye to both of them and stepped out. Sylus stood there for a second, looking around the room. "Caleb as in.." he trailed off, his eyes finally meeting Zayne's tired ones.
"Yes, that Caleb."
Sylus nodded, shoving his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket. "Does he remember you?" he asked, Zayne shrugged but he already knew the answer. He very clearly doesn't. Zayne had this moment where he was arguing with someone outside of a store (cliche right?) but it was quickly escalating into something more dangerous. Then came Caleb, simply walking by, side eyeing the interaction. Usually he would be one to ignore these things but this time for some reason he got involved. Zayne remembered his quick rebuttals, the strong tone in his voice and although he isn't someone that asks for help, who was he to deny a handsome man at his rescue.
He talked about it to Sylus in passing, one of those casual conversation starters and he had been teasing Zayne about it since. He could only imagine how its going to get now that he knows he actually talks to him. "Alright then, you call me if you need anything." he said, swinging his large frame around and leaving the room. The door shut behind him and Zayne was left in silence, glancing at Gideon who was half on the bed half on the floor. He huffed out a small laugh and helped him get on. He looked around, his eyes landing on the mini fridge, opening it he found it to be completely empty. Finally he decided he would go to the convenience store to get some water. "I'll be back." he mumbled to a sleeping Gideon and walked out.
————
Just as Caleb was going to call, the door swung open, Hazel eyes meeting purple. A relief settled over Caleb, seeing him safe and away from whoever the hell that was. "I was about to call you." Caleb said, tossing his phone on his bed. Zayne shut the door behind him, holding up the plastic bag, "I went to go get water, Gideon…" an amused smile formed on his lips, "…doesn't really know how to hold his liquor."
Zayne can't either but nobody else needs to know that. Caleb sighed and nodded, "Yeah I know, he always brags that he can but… he gets drunk off of one beer." his eyes flicked to look at Zayne who was still standing. Caleb sat down on his bed and patted the spot next to him. Zayne set the bag on Gideon's desk and sat down next to Caleb, both of them watching Gideon sleep. Caleb suddenly felt the bed shaking, turning to look at Zayne he saw that he had his hand over his mouth, trying to control his laughter. "What?" Caleb asked, a light smile on his lips. Zayne shook his head, "I just didn't think he would be such a lightweight. I mean look at him, he's tall." Caleb scoffed, "Height has nothing to do with it." Zayne paused, "Actually, since tall people have-" Caleb cut him off, " ah ah, save me the lecture, you're right… whatever." he mumbled out the last part.
A small smile formed on Zayne's lips.
"So-"
"So why-"
They both spoke at the same time, pausing they looked at each other. "You can go first." Zayne gestured. Caleb sighed, "Why were you guys at the bar?" and who was that was another question he wanted to ask but all in due time. Zayne sighed, dropping his head slightly, how was he going to tell him that MC has been instigating the whole time and the reason she did that was so Caleb wouldn't pay attention to his date.
"We just saw it when we were walking by." He lied easily, meeting Caleb's skeptical eyes. Caleb knew that Zayne didn't have anything to do with it so he dropped it, he'd just have to ask MC tomorrow.
"So who was that guy you guys were with?" Caleb asked, trying to appear like he didn't care. Zayne raised a dark brow, "Who?" Caleb grit his teeth, were there other guys around him? No he very clearly remembered the big guy hanging off of Zayne, "You know, the one that was sitting next to you."
"Oh that's just… someone I know." Zayne said vaguely, Caleb nodded, but on the inside there was this flare of irritation blooming in his chest. Sometimes he wished that Zayne was more open about saying things, it always felt like he had to ask the right questions in order to get the answer he wanted. They sat in silence, both of them in their own heads about the days events.
"How was the date?" Zayne asked tentatively, breaking Caleb out of his thoughts. He glanced at him before answering, "It was okay, I mean… I don't really have anything else to compare it to." Zayne nodded, slowly pushing himself up off the bed. "If you feel like you guys had a good connection then, I don't see why you shouldn't see each other again." an unreadable look on Zayne's face as he uttered those words. Caleb chuckled, shaking his head, "No… I think we're better off as friends." he replied easily.
"In fact we started talking about —" Caleb stopped himself from continuing, a blush beginning to form on his cheeks. Zayne furrowed his brows in confusion, "Talked about what?" Caleb looked up at Zayne towering over him. His lips parted as he saw the look Zayne was giving him, one that was questioning him. "I actually… forgot." he replied lamely, Zayne stared at him. He was trying to figure out what they talked about that he suddenly— No it wasn't his problem. But looking down at him he saw Caleb's flushed cheeks, and the way that he was averting his gaze. Grunting, he shook his head and turned toward the door.
"I'll see you." Zayne said without turning back.
"Yeah" Caleb breathed out, trying to calm his racing heart. He watched as Zayne closed the door behind him, the room now only surrounded by the sound of Gideon's snores. He thought back to the conversation he had about Zayne, and how he felt just now. His heart fluttered at the way Zayne looked at him, like he cared, like he wanted to press further but decided not to.
"Shit." he muttered, a hand over his mouth, and his cheeks a thousand degrees hotter.
i want to ask a genuine question. this isn’t meant to be disrespectful, and it isn’t meant to be a passive aggressive dig at anybody on this platform. i’m truly just curious. what is the point of using AI to write fanfiction?
the process of writing fanfiction is, by nature, self indulgent. that’s what it’s supposed to be. the point of writing fanfiction is that you.. write fanfiction.
it’s a thankless job most of the time. it’s a labour of love. it’s an ode to a story and characters that you admire. its blood, sweat and tears solely because you don’t mind bleeding and sweating and crying for something you care about.
if you can’t be bothered to write your own work, why bother to upload it?
A/N: Maaannn, this took me so long to finish. I was really just trying to figure some stuff out. I will definitely try to keep up with my chapters! Sorry to whoever enjoys reading these :,)

Chapter 4
He quickly grabbed his chopsticks again, slurping up more of his noodles. Caleb sighed, resting his cheek on the palm of his hand.
“Hmmm, I mean would it hurt to just go on one date?” he asked, glancing down at his drink. The small bubbles, slowly ascending to the surface.
“It…. it wouldn’t b-but..” Gideon stammered, eyes catching a duo behind Caleb. He quickly waved them over with pleading eyes.
MC tilted her head in confusion but shrugged nonetheless. She tapped Zayne’s arm and pointed towards their direction. They made their way towards the other duo, MC choosing to sit next to Gideon and Zayne sat next to Caleb.
Caleb’s eyes snapped back and forth between the two of them, “What the hell?” he muttered before he continued, “Where did you guys come from?”
“Well, usually we come from our mom’s vagin-” Caleb kicked her from underneath the table, raising a pointed brow at her. She glared back at him, kicking him harder. Zayne smiled lightly in amusement, eyes twinkling with mischief, “She’s not wrong.”
Caleb rolled his eyes, turning to look at him, “Of course I know she’s not wrong but that’s not what I meant.”
“Then you should’ve been more specific.”
“Anyone could tell what I meant with the context that was given.”
“She didn’t know that. Maybe she was answering a question that you have been pondering on your whole life.” Zayne smirked lightly, turning his body to face Caleb.
Caleb laughed mockingly, “Right, right of course. Because no one knows where we come from.”
MC shrugged, “could be a completely sheltered person for all I know. It’s not good to judge Kale.” she grinned, popping a grape into her mouth.
Caleb grunted, an annoyed look painting itself on his face, taking a sip from his drink.
“So what’s up? What’s grooving with yall.” MC smiled, popping another grape into her mouth. Eyes darting between Gideon and Caleb. Hearing a dramatic sigh next to her, she turned her head, feeling Gideon patting her shoulder solemnly.
“My dear friend, I have been given terrible, terrible news.” He dropped his head, shoulders slumping heavily.
“What?” MC asked, muffled by the grapes she was chewing on.
“Kale here,” he gestured towards him, “is thinking of going on a date.”
MC gasped, eyes flicking between both of the men in front of her, a smile slowly creeping up on her lips. Caleb groaned, throwing his head back. “I was just thinking about it because of something Enzo had mentioned.” Zayne tensed slightly, clearing his throat he took a large gulp of his water.
“Just this other friend I have, anyway he was telling me that I should go out with this girl. At least just once but I don't know, I’m kind of on the fence about it.” Caleb rested his elbows on the edge of the table, cradling his head between both hands.
MC pursed her lips, brows still furrowed. A wicked smile slowly crept up on her face, “Well, why doesn’t Zayne go on the date?”
Caleb’s eyes snapped up to look at her, “What?”
“Yeah, since you’re on the fence about it, what could be the harm in that?” she smiled.
“Do I have a say in-” Zayne began, “No.” MC cut him off, turning back towards the incredulous Caleb.
A mischievous look on her face caused Caleb’s eye to twitch. “That makes absolutely no sense, she’s the one that has a crush on me.”
MC shrugged, “She can learn to like someone else right? It’s not like you’re interested in her.”
“No, but I wasn’t seriously considering going on a date, I just feel bad.”
“Bruh.” she stared blankly before leaning forward. “You can’t just go on a date because you feel bad.”
“Well you can’t force someone else to go on a date if they don’t want to.” He retaliated, pressing his hand on Zayne’s shoulder.
Involuntarily squeezing it lightly, Zayne glanced at his hand before flicking his eyes up to watch him. Caleb’s brows furrowed, and he could see from the side that his jaw was tense. He felt his heart twist slightly, opening his mouth before he thought about it.
“I don't see anything wrong with going on the date, it’s not like you’re asking her to marry you.”
Caleb turned towards him, dropping his hand from his shoulder, purple eyes softening.
“Regardless, it makes more sense for Caleb to go than I, she’s interested in him not me.” he continued, pushing the carrots away on his plate. MC stared at him, lips pursed before giving in, “I guess you could learn some date etiquette while you’re there.” she smirked, Caleb rolled his eyes before grabbing Zayne’s plate and moving over all of his carrots to his own. Zayne’s hand paused as he was getting ready to eat something else before the plate was back in its place. Caleb stabbed one of the carrots with his fork and ate it.
“So you’re saying I should go?” he asked, cheeks puffed out as he chewed.
Gideon rubbed his temples, “Just go man.”
Caleb nodded, taking a quick glance at his phone before standing up. He pressed both of his hands on Zayne’s shoulders leaning down slightly, “Well we gotta go to class” giving a closed eye smile, grabbing his tray with one hand and squeezing Zayne’s shoulder with the other. Zayne checked his watch before nodding and standing up as well.
Caleb grinned as MC and Gideon stared at him with an unamused look on their face.
“That’s not what I meant but whatever.” Gideon grumbled, waving him off. Caleb laughed softly, lightly pressing his hand against the middle of Zayne’s back, pushing him towards the exit. MC raised a brow at the action, discreetly smiling.
“Okay well, later losers.” Caleb said, guiding Zayne towards the exit. They both waved them off.
Stepping out into the freezing cold, Caleb adjusted his jacket, pulling it closed. The trees had dropped all of their leaves, welcoming the new season. Zayne looked completely unbothered by the cold despite the light pink tint on the tip of his nose and cheeks. He looked completely at home, his raven hair contrasting against the white mounds of snow forming around different parts of the campus.
They began to walk to the science building, both of their hands stuffed into their pockets.
Caleb cleared his throat, “Thanks for your input back there.” he rubbed the back of his neck. Zayne glanced at him out of the corner of his eye, “Well… it’s the truth.” he said neutrally, “It’s not like you’re going to ask her to be your girlfriend right?” he asked, continuing to face forwards. Caleb thought about it, he never really entertained the idea of dating at all and yet, “Would you go on the date if it was you?” he asked instead.
Zayne let out a small hum, tilting his head slightly in thought. “I wouldn’t because it’s of no interest to me.” he finally answered.
“So you’re not interested in dating?” Caleb pressed.
“That’s not what I said.” Zayne continued, “I’m just saying that I would only date someone that I actually like.” Caleb glanced at him, both of their eyes meeting. There was something hidden within Zayne’s hazel eyes, something softer. Caleb felt his heart quicken slightly, he nodded and quickly looked away. “I-I guess that makes sense.”
“So why were you thinking about it so much?” Zayne asked, both of them unconsciously slowing down their pace, trying to find a way to spend more time together.
Caleb sighed heavily, “I think I’m just used to always doing something for someone else.” He replied, Zayne’s brows furrowed but waited for him to continue.
“It really isn't that important” Caleb evaded, quickening his pace. Zayne stared after him, taking note of his tense shoulders, “You’re allowed to say no.”
Caleb turned his head, eyes scanning the side of Zayne’s face. He felt his chest tighten a little at that, he knew it but he never brought it upon himself to not help someone when they needed him. No matter how inconvenient it was for him. At a loss for words, all Caleb could do was stay quiet, something that Zayne took note of. Finally they reached the building, Caleb reached for the door handle, pulling open the deep mahogany door. They were immediately met with the clinical smell of the building. No matter how many times Caleb tried to get used to the smell of antiseptic, his attempts were futile. Zayne however was completely indifferent to it, almost comforted in a way.
They both walked in silence, Caleb struggling to find a way to start a conversation with him, there was a lot he wanted to ask him but did he reserve that right? It’s not like they were close, Caleb gnawed on his lip in thought. Completely lost in his thoughts he didn’t notice when they finally reached the lab, Zayne leading him towards one of the tables.
Caleb stared blankly at the table in front of him, “Thank you.” he blurted out. Zayne glanced at him, settling down on the chair next to him.
“What for?” he asked
Caleb pursed his lips slightly, leaning on the palm of his hand he avoided looking in his direction. Instead opting for playing with the metal spiral on his notebook.
“For what you said earlier.” he continued, “I know I am allowed to say no, I just….” he trailed off, not really knowing how to express what he was feeling. Zayne’s eyes softened, he hesitated, his hand about to reach out to hold Caleb’s but decided against it. Dropping his hand back on his hand back on his lap.
“You don’t have to say anything, I get it, we’re not exactly the closest. Just know that I see you.” Zayne comforted him, or at least tried to. He knew how monotone his voice came out sometimes, he could only hope that Caleb understood that part of him as well.
A soft smile played at the corner of Caleb’s lips. “You already sound like a doctor.” He turned his head slightly, Hazel green meeting purple. Caleb analyzed Zayne’s expression, at first glance he didn’t show anything in his face, but the longer he looked. There was this softness in his expression, a tenderness that he didn’t know how to handle. No one had ever looked at him like that. He began to feel a little nervous from the way Zayne was looking at him, like he could see through everything and knew every single emotion he was feeling. It made him feel completely bare, seen.
“Seems like you’ll do a good job in comforting your patients.” he said, playing with the sleeves of his shirt.
“Hmm.” Zayne thought about it, “Then I guess you make good practice.” he said before turning his attention to the front of the class.
—
Class was uneventful, except for the fact that they had received an A on their report. Caleb beamed with pride, a little annoyed that he had to share that A with Zayne but he could overlook it for now considering that he was actually a decent person. He now laid in the comfort of his dorm, staring up at the white ceiling. He thought back to the conversation he had with Zayne, he was allowed to say no. But… What was the harm in doing this? He groaned, shutting his eyes tightly. On one hand he could go on this date with this girl (forgot her name again) or just go about his life as he did before. There was this large part of him that didn’t want to disappoint anyone, one of his largest weaknesses. Or in reality, Caleb just has the tendency of falling into peer pressure.
Caleb shoved open the door, a cold gust of wind hitting his face as he walked out of the building. He shivered slightly, shoving his hands in his pockets. Caleb ambled through the different walkways, gazing at the mounds of snow. He thought back to the whole date debacle before finally pulling his phone out from his pocket and sending a text to Enzo. Not even a minute passed before his phone started ringing.
Putting his phone to his ear he answered, “Hello?”
“Hey man, I didn’t think I’d hear back from you about this to be honest.” Enzo continued, “Meet me at the bistro at the end of the block?”
Caleb stayed quiet before asking, “Bro what block.”
Enzo groaned, “Dude you know i'm bad at remembering street names, you know the one that’s got that big ass tree in front of it, and there's like a cleaners across the street.”
“You’re lucky I know my surroundings.” Caleb shook his head and chuckled, already beginning to make his way there. Enzo sighed in relief, “I'll see you in a bit then.” Caleb heard the call end. “Damn… bye.” Caleb muttered to himself before shoving his phone back in his pocket.
The walk there wasn’t long, if anything it was revitalizing, feeling the cold nip at his fingers despite being buried within his pockets. Each step he heard the snow crunching underneath his shoes, cheeks flushed from the cold, he crossed the street towards the warmly lit bistro.
Pulling the metal handle, he was greeted by the warm smell of fresh baked bread. “Hi, welcome in.” The host greeted him, Caleb smiled back, “I’m meeting someone.”
They nodded, gesturing for him to continue walking forward, Caleb glanced around trying to spot a head full of curls. Finally he found him seated at one of the booths in the middle. He stepped towards him before softly laying a hand on his shoulder. Enzo jumped, snapping his head to look up, sighing in relief when he saw Caleb. Enzo quickly rested a hand over his heart, “Dude, you can’t scare me like that.” Caleb grinned taking a seat across from him, quickly taking off his backpack and shoving it to the side. “It’s not my fault you’re not vigilant.” he teased, Enzo rolled his eyes playfully before smirking. “So….”
Caleb raised a brow expectantly, “So…?”
Enzo clasped his hands, resting them under his chin, wiggling his eyebrows “So you’re open to the date, what changed your mind or rather… what convinced you?”
Caleb pursed his lips, thinking back to Zayne and what he had told him. “It’s not like I have anything to lose right? And it’s just one date.” Enzo grinned, slowly nodding his head.
There was a short pause, Enzo really taking in the man in front of him. His eyes raked over Caleb, taking in subtle differences, he looked calmer, lighter, eyes a little brighter. Enzo leaned back, “Has anything new happened lately?” he finally asked. Caleb paused as he was taking a sip of his tea. There wasn’t anything new in particular… Did Zayne count? He finally met Enzo’s inquiring eyes, “I don’t think so?” setting down the mug. Enzo nodded unconvinced, “You don't think so.” he continued, “So nothing big, meeting anybody new?” Enzo dug, Caleb shook his head pursing his lips, “Nope.”
“Riiight.” Enzo dragged out, icy blue eyes boring into him. He narrowed his eyes at Caleb, scrutinizing any reaction that he lets slip before finally dropping it. Enzo shut his eyes sighing heavily, before looking up at him through his dark lashes, a playful smirk appearing on his lips. “I’ll tell her you’re interested in a date.” Caleb nodded, messing with the napkin in front of him.
“So what have you been up to lately?” Enzo asked, twirling his straw around his glass.
“Not much to be completely honest.” Caleb shrugged, “Aside from job searching… everything has pretty much been the same.” Enzo nodded, he parted his lips about to say something else but was interrupted by a waiter placing a plate in front of them. “Here’s the pistachio cheesecake! Enjoy!” The waiter smiled sweetly at both of them before walking away. Caleb stared down at the cheesecake, reminded of a guy with raven hair he smiled lightly. The more time Caleb had began to spend with Zayne, it was easier to grow fond of him. Enzo caught the soft smile on Caleb’s lips, noticing the faraway look in his purple eyes. He raised a brow before scooting the plate towards the middle of the table.
“You wanna share?” Enzo asked, already beginning to scoop some of the cheesecake. Caleb shook his head, “I gotta go help a friend with something actually, just let me know what she says.” He offered a small smile, already beginning to get up. Enzo pouted, slowly chewing and reluctantly nodding.
“I’ll text you then.” Caleb nodded and made his way out.
–
Caleb sat in silence at the library, twirling his pencil between his fingers. Empty seats surrounded the area, leaving the space almost entirely to himself. Save for the handful of students that were clearly trying to meet deadlines. He sighed lightly, getting up to go get water from the vending machine. Leave it to him to completely forget to hydrate himself, he looked around trying to spot if someone could help watch his things but found no one. Shrugging he swiveled toward the exit and made his way to the vending machine just outside of the building. He shivered slightly, quickly reaching for his wallet and pressing the buttons on the vending machine. The soft glow illuminating the sidewalk.
Reaching down to pick up his water he heard soft voices, turning towards the sound he found Zayne smiling. He smiled to himself, about to greet him but stopped when someone else came to view. A boy on the leaner side with silver hair, he literally looks like he stepped out of a freaking romance novel. Caleb’s smile faded away, watching the both of them interact with each other. There was something new brewing deep in his heart, a feeling that Caleb doesn’t necessarily like but really has no control over. He started making his way toward them before he could stop himself.
“Hey Zayne.” Caleb smiled but it didn’t reach his eyes. Zayne turned toward him slightly surprised, “Hey” he replied, both Caleb and Zayne unable to look away from each other until he heard a cough. His eyes flicked over to the boy next to him, smiling apologetically, “Sorry, this is Xavier my roommate.” he introduced him. Caleb tensed slightly, his fake smile growing wider. He reached his hand out for a handshake, gripping tightly onto Xavier’s hand. “Nice to meet you, I’m Caleb.”
Xavier raised a silver brow, amusement clearly showing in his blue eyes. “So you’re the guy huh.” letting go of his hand, Caleb tilted his head in confusion, Zayne’s head snapped towards Xavier. “The guy?” he asked, Zayne shook his head “No, I think he’s confusing you for someone else.” giving Xavier a pointed glare. Xavier grinned, meanwhile Caleb was still thinking about the ‘Someone else’... there’s more people!?
“No, no, this is definitely the guy you were telling me about, you know tall, purple eyes…” he trailed off, a teasing smile on his face “You know the one that wouldn’t let you have full control over the project.” Zayne’s shoulders discreetly slumped in relief, “Right yeah,” he gestured towards Caleb, “That’s him.” Caleb smirked slightly, “So… I’m famous.” Zayne rolled his eyes, the corner of his lips curled up slightly. “You wish.”
Caleb smiled before it faded away just as quickly as it came, “So what are you guys doing?” eyes boring into Zayne’s. They both turned toward Xavier who was shuffling his feet, kicking the snow on the ground. “We’re gonna go get coffee, this guy right here doesn’t know when to stop.” Xavier clasped his hand on Zayne’s shoulder who kept his eyes on Caleb’s. He broke his stare glancing at the building behind him, “Did you come from the library?” Zayne asked, looking back at Caleb who’s ears had a light blush on them, or maybe it was just the cold. Caleb looked back to the library, realization dawned on him that he had left all of his stuff unattended. “Oh shit.” he muttered, whirling around he gave them an apologetic smile. “I gotta go.” he breathed out, already beginning to walk away. Zayne watched him, letting out a small laugh. Xavier looked between Caleb’s retreating figure and Zayne’s soft smile, slowly putting together the pieces. Zayne didn’t look at anyone like that, never before had he seen the tenderness in his stare. He chuckled, “Alright bud let’s get going, that mocha isn’t gonna order itself.” pulling on his arm. Zayne nodded, walking in pace with him.
“You like him don’t you.” Xavier asked, staring straight ahead at the dark sidewalk, illuminated by the streetlights and warm glow of the stores surrounding the streets. Zayne’s head snapped toward him, “I don’t know what you mean.”
Xavier scoffed, “You’re a terrible liar, anyone with eyes can see.” Zayne stayed quiet, mulling over what he said. He never thought about what his expressions looked like from an outsider’s perspective, in fact… he always thought he lacked in that department. Xavier glanced at him, taking note of his silence. He sighed, “I figured you did to be honest.” met with silence he continued, “In the way that you talked about him… there was always this light in your eyes but now… seeing the way that you looked at him, well.” Xavier smiled softly.
They both continued walking in silence, the only sound was the crunching of the snow underneath their shoes.
“I met him before the project.” Zayne broke the silence. Xavier raised a brow staying quiet, allowing him to continue. “He won’t remember but… there was a time he helped me out.” he said vaguely. They both continued walking in silence, “I wish him nothing but the best.” Zayne said quietly before pushing open the door to the cafe.
—
Caleb huffed as he made his way back to where he left his stuff, relief flooding him as he saw they were still exactly where he left them. He looked down at his hand, still holding the cold water bottle. Sighing he made his way to the table, not really finding it in him to keep studying. As he was putting everything away he kept seeing Zayne and that Xavier guy laughing together, he had never seen that expression on his face before, he frowned, zipping his bag closed. Caleb made his way back out of the library, shoulders tensed.
The walk back to the dorms was long, his mind working overtime. For instance, Did Gideon finally clean his side of the room? When the hell is Enzo gonna text him about the date so he can get it over with? And the most annoying of all, how close were Zayne and Xavier for him to look so carefree? He groaned to himself, running his hand down his face. It really wasn’t his business to question Zayne’s friendships at all, if anything they themselves are barely making it to the friend zone… right? Finally making it to his door, he shoved the key in and almost slammed it open. Gideon snapped his head up from his spot on the bed, only illuminated by the blue light of his laptop.
“Hey girl hey.” his words faded as he watched Caleb dump his bag on the floor and throw himself on his bed. Gideon’s face scrunched in disgust, “Please go shower and change before you get in your bed.” Caleb groaned in response, kicking his feet in protest. Gideon rolled his eyes, before drawing his attention back to his laptop. Caleb laid there in silence, only allowing the sound of the keyboard clicking to enter his mind. Sighing he forced himself up and sluggishly grabbed the things he needed and left. Gideon stared in silence until the door clicked shut. “Hmm interesting.” Gideon let out, before redirecting his attention back to his assignment.
20 minutes had passed when the door slowly opened, Caleb walking in with wet hair and still holding a contemplative look on his face. Gideon watched as Caleb flopped back into bed face down, not caring for where his things landed. Deciding he had enough, “ Did anything new happen today?” Gideon asked, adjusting himself to turn toward Caleb’s side of the room. He only got a groan in response. Huffing he stood up from his bed and laid on top of Caleb, receiving a groan of protest. “Get off me.” Caleb’s muffled voice made Gideon laugh, “Not till you tell me what’s wrong with you.”
Caleb huffed, lifting himself off the bed, “I’m serious, there’s nothing wrong.” not glancing back at Gideon that fell off. A thud resounded throughout the room, along with a small whimper.
“Ugh you suck.” Gideon groaned out, slowly getting up from the floor, wincing in pain.
“Fine since you won’t tell me, I'm gonna have to take a guess.” Gideon smiled playfully, flopping down next to Caleb on his bed. Tapping his finger on his chin as he exaggerated his expressions, “Hmm… you got a bad grade?” he asked, a wide smile on his face. Caleb shoved his shoulder, “Don’t joke, that would never happen.”
Gideon smirked, “Well, no but you could’ve gotten a lower grade than Zayne.” Caleb’s eye twitched, an annoyed smile showing up on his face. “Watch it.”
Gideon raised his hands in surrender, an amused look on his face, "I'm just saying… but… does this have something to do with Zayne?” Caleb rolled his eyes, a rosy color rising on the tips of his ears. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He leaned over slightly to pick up a book and pretended to look busy.
“Definitely something to do with Zayne.” Gideon nodded, content to have found the answer. Even though it wasn’t complete, knowing that it had something to do with a certain someone with raven hair and hazel eyes was enough information. Caleb ignored him, flipping the page.
“So what is it about Zayne, did you see him today? Did you hang out with him today? What did you guys talk about?” Gideon threw out more and more questions. Caleb continued to stay quiet, flipping another page. Gideon stared blankly at him, eyes flicking back and forth between his face and the book itself.
“You’re so annoying, the book is literally upside down.”
“What if I was practicing reading this way to further my intelligence.”
Gideon rolled his eyes, “no one does that.”
“I do.”
Sighing heavily, Gideon pushed himself off the bed and paced the room. Caleb took a peak from over the book only to make eye contact with him. Quickly looking back down he flipped another page. Gideon rolled his eyes, chuckling softly, “You can tell me when you want to then…” he trailed off, taking a look at his friend in front of him. There was a tension on his shoulders. Gideon knew when Caleb was going through something, but he never wanted to push him to talk. He was the kind of guy that never asked for help, pushing away anyone that would try to offer it but Gideon knew he deserved someone that would take care of him the way he does others. Sighing he turned back to his bed, settling down in front of his laptop again. Caleb peeked at him again, dropping the book at his side.
Caleb laid on his side, reading the message that Enzo had sent him earlier. Biting his lip, he typed out an ‘ok’, before dropping the phone and closing his eyes. He couldn’t find it in himself to feel happy about the date, all he kept thinking about was Zayne’s smile, the calm expression on his face, something he had never seen before. His heart clenched slightly at the thought of his roommate being able to drag that expression out of him. Caleb drifted off to the sound of Gideon typing and a new memory.

Chapter 3 |previous part here!
Caleb had spent a lot of time thinking about the upcoming weekend, most of it wondering how the hell he had gone from not really spending much time with his friends to now seeing them almost everyday.
Not that there was really anything wrong with it, he quite liked the idea of seeing them more under his nonchalant exterior. However, this wasn’t just the regular trio, no instead it included one more person, the one that seemed to be showing up everywhere lately. Literally yesterday they had run into each other yesterday at the library.
Zayne’s head was buried in the thickest textbook Caleb had ever seen. Naturally, Caleb had gone to get another textbook, not really reading what the title was and sat right in front of him. Pulling out the chair a little too loudly for being in the library. Zayne’s eyes snapped up, his glasses slid down the bridge of his nose. Caleb gave him a tight smile, sitting down and opening the thick textbook.
Zayne raised an eyebrow, catching the title of it before Caleb opened it completely to a random page. Not bothering to question him though he continued jotting down his own notes.
Caleb’s eyes skimmed the pages, trying to look more studious, a hand placed on his chin in mock concentration.
All of a sudden there was a whispering voice behind him, “Caleb I didn’t know you were studying law?” His head snapped to the side, looking up at an acquaintance that he had from another class. “I thought you were studying engineering?”
The tips of his ears turned red, “Oh you know, I just like studying different things.” Nodding, turning back to the book and flipping it to another page. He let out a chuckle and lightly patted Caleb’s shoulder, “respect.” he walked off, disappearing behind a bookshelf. Caleb preened, a smug smile playing at his lips. Sneaking a glance to see if Zayne had seen or heard it all but all he saw was that he was deeply concentrated. He twirled his pen between his long fingers, brows furrowed.
There was a small seed of disappointment, Caleb wanted him to see that he was good at many things. Why you might ask? Who the fuck knows.
Huffing slightly, he leaned his head on his hand, biting his bottom lip. To be completely honest, Caleb spent most of his time there glossing over the words on the textbook, stealing glances at the raven haired man in front of him and pretending to look busier than he actually was.
It wasn’t until Zayne started packing up all of his things and leaving that Caleb dropped his head on the desk. Cheek pressing against the cold pages of the book.
Thinking back on it now, Caleb couldn’t help but cringe slightly, but honestly it might be a win. Since it was the forsaken weekend, Caleb was stuck cleaning the dorm while Gideon grumbled about being forced to buy snacks. When Gideon had brought the plan up to him, he had felt a little reluctant but he was all about turning over a new leaf or however the saying goes.
So here he was, neatly fixing BOTH of their beds (because Gideon got up, put on his slippers and shrugged on a hoodie before walking out sluggishly).
One thing about Gideon is that he’s gonna take a nap (a nap that lasted through the whole night and half of the day). So, Caleb had spent most of the day working on his assignments, finishing up whatever he could. The silence was welcome, it helped him focus more, something that he never really got since he had spent most of his time trying to help MC. After finally finishing up, he opened the window slightly, letting in the cool breeze. The sun set casting a warm glow throughout the room.
Suddenly his phone started ringing, he turned around and reached for it. Not bothering to check who was calling.
“Hello?” he answered, putting his phone between his shoulder and cheek while pulling out his laptop.
“Hey, did Gideon go and get the snacks already?” MC’s voice came through the phone, he could hear the muffled sound of other people talking around her.
“Yeah, he left already.” he responded, sitting down on the edge of his bed.
“Well I was thinking of food, you think pizza is okay?” she asked
Caleb nodded, “Yeah that’s fine, I can pay you for half.”
“How about you pay for the whole thing?” she teased, he could already see her smile. Rolling his eyes, “Sure.”
“I'm kidding, I'll pick it up and then we’ll be there in a bit.” she said, Caleb let out a hmm in acknowledgment.
“HOLD ON! Tell Gideon to get ice cream.”
“Why don’t you call him yourself?”
“Ugh that's too much wooorrrkkk.” she whined.
Sighing heavily, “what flavor?” he heard her muffled voice asking the same question before she responded, “Pistachio.”
“Okay, I’ll see you guys soon.”
“Byeeeeee.” she sang before hanging up.
Caleb went through his contacts before clicking on Gideons, waiting for him to pick up the phone.
“What”
“Get ice cream.”
“What kind?” he asked,
“Pistachio.”
“.... I guess.” he responded before hanging up. Caleb put his phone back down, opening up his laptop and pulling up the report that he hadn’t really touched. It’s not like he couldn’t finish it, of course he could. He’s just busy doing other things. Seems that he would have to force himself this time though. Cracking his knuckles he pulled up the document and began to work. He spent some time polishing up his half of the report, losing track of time and finally being broken from his groove. The sound of the door squeaking open made him perk up and look over his shoulder to see Gideon holding two full bags.
“What the hell did you get?” Caleb asked, standing up to help him with one of the bags. Gideon shut the door behind him.
“Snacks.” he said, looking at him as if he were stating the obvious.
“Well yeah no shit but why so much?” he asked, opening up one of them. Seeing an array of chips as well as different candies and drinks.
Gideon stared at him while Caleb stared back. “Bro… dont piss me off.”
Caleb snorted, a large smile slowly appearing as he looked at the annoyed expression on Gideon.
Gideon sighed heavily, pulling out the small pint of ice cream, “So what the hell are we supposed to do with this?” he asked, setting it down on the desk. They both stared at it before turning to each other. “You should’ve gotten ice.” Caleb broke the silence. Gideon groaned loudly, throwing his hands up in exasperation, “Can’t we just give it to them melted?”
Just as Caleb was about the reply, a knock sounded through the room. Gideon sighed in relief, “They have to eat that first.” pointing at the pint and turning around to open the door.
Caleb turned slightly, leaning back and pressing his hands against the edge of the desk. MC smiled lightly, stepping into the room and Zayne walked in behind her, holding the pizza box in his hands.
MC rubbed her hands together, “What’s Crackalackin?” grinning at each of them. Gideon groaned, grabbing the ice cream and shoving it in her hands. “You need to eat this like now.”
She furrowed her brows, turning it slightly. Her lips formed an O before taking the pizza box from Zayne and handing him the ice cream.
“This is for you.” she sang out, grabbing the chair and pulling it slightly just to place the box on it. “So where’s the spoon?” she asked, looking at Gideon expectantly.
He stared at her blankly.
She stared back.
“Uh…”
She folded her arms over her chest and raised an eyebrow. Caleb turned slightly to pull open his drawer, rummaging through it to see if HE had a spoon.
“Let's go get a spoon.” MC said, heading towards the door. Zayne stepped forward before she stopped him, “No, Gideon has to come with me.” tilting her head slightly.
Gideon looked at her confused while she gave him a pointed look. He sighed, walking towards her, “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” he called out over his shoulder, walking out behind MC and closing the door.
Zayne and Caleb stood there in silence, looking at the door they walked out of. Caleb cleared his throat, reaching a hand out, “We can put the ice cream over here in the meantime.” Zayne nodded, handing it to him, the tips of his fingers brushing against his palm.
Goosebumps raised on Caleb’s arms, the feeling of icy cold breaking the warmth of his hands. Placing it on his desk on top of a napkin he turned back to Zayne who was looking around the room. Hazel green eyes scanning different areas.
Catching the model airplane displayed on a shelf, Zayne looked at it in interest.
“Did you build that?” he asked, Caleb looked at what he was staring at, “Oh.. yeah I did.” he said rubbing the back of his neck.
“May I?” he gestured towards the airplane, Caleb nodded, stepping back slightly.
Zayne got closer to it, analyzing the shape of it. “I didn’t peg you as the type.” he said before turning back around.
Caleb raised a brow, “How so?”
“Well, to be completely honest… from what I've heard, you seem to be the type of person to have other interests.”
Caleb smiled amusedly, “So you’re telling me, you judged a book by its cover?” folding his arms over his chest.
Zayne shook his head, “Just an observation.” Caleb pursed his lips, eyes shining with mischief, “Hm, seems you observed wrong.”
Zayne ignored that comment, choosing to look around some more, eyes flicking across the various books neatly organized by his desk.
“I finished my half of the report.” Zayne said offhandedly, turning and looking up slightly to meet Caleb’s purple eyes.
Caleb nodded, sitting down on the edge of his bed. “I should be done soon, I just have a couple of things to revise.”
“Did you need some help?” he asked.
“No.” he replied immediately, Zayne thought nothing of it. There was one question burning in Caleb’s mind though, before they had even started doing the report, they had to take a test. Naturally, Caleb thought it necessary to know what everyone’s scores were but there was one person that he didn’t ask. The very person standing right in front of him.
“Hey, so what did you get on the test?” he pried.
Zayne’s brows furrowed,”What test?”
“The test we had for chemistry.”
Zayne thought about it for a second, “But that was so long ago, why does it matter?” Caleb let out a fake laugh, “Just curious.”
“Hm, if I remember correctly, I got a perfect score on it.” Caleb’s eye twitched, “Really?” a large grin overtook his face, “That’s great.”
“It’s not like it was hard,” Zayne stepped towards Gideon’s side of the room, leaning against the edge of the bed. “I think I even mentioned it to the professor to make things a little harder.” Caleb gritted his teeth slightly, the fake smile still plastered on his face. Unbeknownst to Zayne, Caleb’s score wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t perfect. That day, he remembered pulling open his computer to see his scores and seeing the 95/100 staring right back at him. Call him dramatic but one thing he hated was making mistakes.
“I agree, it was definitely on the easier side.” Caleb forced out, Zayne nodded. There was once again silence between them until, “So how did you meet MC?” Caleb asked, curiosity flickering in his purple eyes.
Zayne was about to answer before the door burst open, “Spoon acquired!” MC yelled out, holding the plastic spoon up in the air. Gideon trailing in behind her and shutting the door. Caleb could hear him grumbling about having been forced to walk again. The question now forgotten, he made a note to himself to ask again some other time.
MC kneeled down on one knee in front of Zayne, holding out the spoon, “My liege.” she said dramatically. A small smile curled at the edge of his lips before he took it from her. She quickly got up, grabbing the ice cream from its place and handing it to him.
“So where’s the laptop?” she asked, Caleb pointed at it from his spot. Gideon plopped down next to him, grabbing the pizza box from the chair. Placing it on the bed he opened it and grabbed a slice. Moaning in delight when he took a bite, Caleb groaned, elbowing him.
MC grabbed the laptop, setting it down on the floor, sitting criss cross in front of it. Zayne chose to sit down next to her, opening up the ice cream and dipping his spoon into it. It was already slightly melted but he didn’t mind. Caleb sat on the other side of her while Gideon pressed himself against him.
“So what movie did you guys have in mind?” Caleb asked after watching MC stare at the screen blankly. Her head snapped towards him, eyes flickering to his other side to catch Gideon’s.
“Aha, uh, well you see…” she laughed awkwardly, Gideon joined in, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Honestly? We didn’t even decide on one…” Gideon trailed off, avoiding looking at Caleb. Zayne stayed silent, perfectly content with eating his ice cream. To him, this day was already great.
Caleb sighed heavily, rubbing the bridge of his nose, “You guys are so unprepared.” he muttered, leaning forward and opening up his files filled with movies.
MC’s eyes widened, leaning forward as well, “Where did you get all of this?” she whispered in amazement.
A smug smile lifted Caleb’s lips, “What, like it's hard?” glancing at her from the corner of his eye.
Gideon patted his back, “Good work kale.” Caleb groaned internally, hoping that Zayne didn’t hear that.
Unfortunately he did, a faint smile pulled at his lips. He chose not to say anything about it but would definitely store this information for later. Caleb quickly picked a random one, finally leaning back. Gideon grabbed the pizza box, setting it down on his lap and opening it. He took out another slice and bit into it. The others followed suit. They all sat silently, all immersed in the movie they were watching. Caleb leaned back, pressing his weight against his hands, out of the corner of his eye he can see raven hair. The screen of the laptop casting a glow on his face, his eyes trailed over it. Caleb wasn’t blind, he knew that Zayne was attractive, his chiseled jaw, the prominent cupid's bow on his lips.
He took in his appearance, an olive green knitted sweater, his hair neatly parted. But what really brought all of the attention was his stoic demeanor. How he always appeared to have a calm exterior, like nothing could ever touch him. There was a small part of Caleb that envied that, wishing he could be indifferent, but instead he learned how to hide his emotions. Finding it better to not say anything and learning to deal with things on his own.
Gideon glanced at Caleb, a smug smile appearing on his face as he watched him stare shamelessly at Zayne.
Caleb was broken out of his trance, feeling a tap on his knee. He looked towards the direction, eyes meeting Gideons amused ones. He leaned in slightly to whisper in Caleb’s ear, “See anything you like?”
Caleb’s brows furrowed, “What are you talking about?” he mumbled, the tips of his ears slowly turning pink, betraying him. He focused his attention back on the movie, hearing Gideon’s muffled chuckle.
“Shh!” MC pressed her index finger to her lips, eyes narrowed. Gideon couldn’t help but snort, coughing to cover it up. Caleb had to look away to not laugh, a smile threatening to appear. They both forced a serious look on their face as they locked back into the screen. MC turned back to the computer also fighting a smile at their stupidity.
“How much longer?” Gideon muttered, they all turned towards him. He looked back at them, eyes wide. “Yo, what the fuck….” he trailed off, pushing himself away from them.
“This is why your brain is rotted, you can’t even sit here for a full movie.” Caleb lectured, Gideon was already rolling his eyes. “Oh please, of course I can,” he argued. MC let out a loud laugh, “Yeah right.” she mumbled. Gideon looked at her, offended, “Excuse me?”
Zayne watched them, eyes bouncing back and forth between the three of them. He dipped the spoon back into the ice cream, and took another spoonful.
“Dude, you literally just asked how much was left of the movie,” Caleb replied, Gideon let out an incredulous laugh, “What, I can’t be conscious of time now?” Folding his arms over his chest.
“Alright ladies, can we please just focus on the movie?” MC sighed, turning back to the laptop.
“There’s no point now.” Gideon muttered under his breath. Caleb covered his mouth with his hand, fighting his laughter.
MC ignored both of them, leaning slightly into Zayne’s space to offer him a quiet apology. He shook his head, hoping that it would be enough to let her know that she didn’t need to apologize. If anything, it amused him more than anything. Seeing their dynamic, the way they responded to each other so easily. He hoped he could get that close to them one day, but there was one particular person that had seemed to take over his mind lately.
Finally they were able to sit silently, sparing the few moments where Gideon would huff loudly, adjusting himself continuously, trying to find a spot where he would feel comfortable.
Caleb chose to ignore Gideon’s restless behavior, pulling the grocery bag and pulling out a bag of chips. The rustling of the bag made MC side eye him, opening it he offered her some of the chips.
After a while, the movie finally ended. Gideon grunting in relief, creakily standing up from the floor.
Caleb leaned back on his palms, zoning out. MC looked up at Gideon from her spot, “I never want to watch another movie with you.” she glared playfully. He waved her off, stretching his arms. Zayne continued to sit silently, the now empty pint sat next to him. Pushing up his glasses with his finger, he watched MC and Gideon bicker. There was a thought that crossed his mind, they seemed like they all grew up together. A closeness that can only be achieved through years of spending time together. He glanced at Caleb out of the corner of his eye, noticing the softness of his gaze when he watched his friends. The moments where Zayne saw him alone, he always noticed that he was closed off, the mask slipping when someone came up to talk to him. The familiar friendliness that everyone was used to would disappear when he thought no one else was looking. The tense look that would sneak its way when he would look at him specifically. He didn’t really understand why it was so hard for him to get Caleb to give him that same friendliness that he gave to others.
Zayne wasn’t an idiot, he knew that there was some one sided competition that Caleb had set against him. Why? He didn’t know. He could see it in the conversations that they would have, the quick quips, where he was trying to make himself seem smarter, better. Looking down, he played with the ends of his sleeves. Zayne didn’t think his behavior was hostile, but he was used to that kind of treatment. So he stayed indifferent towards it. A small part of him even enjoyed it.
—
A couple days had passed since their hangout. They had said their goodbye’s, Zayne offering to pay for the food to which Caleb had refused. After that, Caleb had forced himself to work on the report, finishing up the last details and editing whatever needed to be fixed. He sat there in front of the computer, gnawing at his bottom lip. His phone in his hand, thumb hovering over Zayne’s contact. It wasn’t like he needed to see him, but they did have to work on their report, (something he tells himself despite the fact that the report is already finished).
He sighed heavily, running his hand over his face. He sucked it up and finally pressed on it, quickly typing in his message and sending it before he stopped himself. Now he just had to figure out what to do to make himself busy. Gideon had left a lot earlier in the morning, something about needing to work on a project. MC was also busy studying, which Caleb should be doing the same thing. Yet, despite that, he couldn’t find it in him to focus.
Tossing his phone on his bed he stretched. Finally situating himself once again in front of the laptop and pulling out a notebook.
The bad thing about being an engineering major was the amount of equations that needed to be done, and the plethora of math that had no ending. But hey, as long as he got to work with airplanes he didn't really care. He held the pencil in his hand, staring outside the window above the desk. The trees slowly change colors, the array of oranges and browns framing the pathways. Fallen leaves decorating the green grass. Focusing again on his assignment he began to work, losing himself in counting numbers. It’s been a while since he’s been out, the past few days he had gotten messages from other friends asking when he’s going to go out.
Usually he would, but he couldn’t find it in him to be there. His perfect excuse? Too many assignments. They always laughed, telling him that he didn’t need to worry about that. His grades are always perfect, effortless. He ran through each equation, the hum of the AC allowing for the perfect background noise.
A chime broke the silence, turning his head towards the sound he saw his phone light up. Swiveling his chair he reached for it, finding a response from one raven haired man, asking if they could meet up right now. He thought about it, purple eyes turning to see his pages of work. Biting his lip he figured he could still work on whatever he needed to do over there, it wouldn’t be too bad to study with him. Caleb quickly typed back a reply, asking him where. Not even a second later Zayne replied, telling him to go to the bookstore he had taken them to before.
Standing up he packed his things, shrugging on a jacket and headed out. The second he stepped out of the dorms, there was a chill, the cool air caressing his face. He adjusted the straps on his bag and began his walk there. He passed various students, taking advantage of the nice weather and sitting by the trees. Either reading, studying or eating.
“Hey Caleb!” he broke from his thoughts, slowly turning towards the voice. He smiled, waving his hand, watching as he came up to him. “Hey Enzo.”
“Man, we don’t see you these days!” Caleb laughed awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Honestly, I just haven’t really been feeling up for anything.” He replied, looking down at him. Enzo tsked folding his arms over his chest, “Hey, I also heard that you rejected Ruby.” Caleb furrowed his brows. “Who?”
Enzo stared at him before laughing loudly, “Oh my god, this is gold.” he wheezed, doubled over. Caleb blinked at him, confused. Who the hell is Ruby?
“I think I would remember if I rejected someone?” he said, tilting his head slightly. Enzo shook his head, curly locks bouncing. He giggled, trying to suppress his laughter, “Uhm.” he cleared his throat.
“You know Ruby, she said she went up to you at the cafeteria, just said you weren't interested but that was it.” he giggled again, “ You didn’t recognize her?” he asked, Caleb thought back to when he was at the cafeteria, vaguely remembering a girl with long brown hair. “I guess not?”
Enzo smirked, “Listen,” he reached up to place his hands on Caleb’s shoulders. “I think you should give her a chance.” Caleb opened his mouth to protest, Enzo stopped him. “At least one date? She really likes you, annddd, you’ve never been on a date yourself.” He grinned, dimples forming on his cheeks.
Caleb sighed heavily, “Look, I’m really not interested in anyone right now and I don’t want to lead her on if you say that she likes me.” Enzo waved him off, “Take it like trial and error or some shit like that.” Caleb looked off, did he want to go on a date? Hell no. Literally he has gone his whole life not dating anyone, he’d like to keep that streak.
“Come on Caleeeb.” he whined, shaking him back and forth. Caleb groaned, “Fine, I'll think about it. Now can you let me go? I have somewhere to be.”
Enzo grinned up at him, clapping his hands together. He reached up and grabbed his face, pressing a large kiss on his cheek. Caleb shoved him off lightly, a chuckle betraying the serious look on his face. “You let me know.” he smiled cheekily, a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. Caleb rolled his eyes, “Yeah, yeah.”
—
Caleb opened the door to the bookstore, today it seemed emptier than the first time they came. The sound of rustling papers and soft music playing filled the space. Caleb walked towards the back of the store, looking around to try to see Zayne. Finally he found him, hunched over a textbook, pen flying across his paper. His glasses once again slid down the bridge of his nose. Stepping towards the table, he knocked on it lightly. Zayne’s eyes snapped up to look at him over his glasses. He gestured for him to take the seat in front of him, “You sure?” Caleb asked. Zayne looked at him in confusion, “What?” he asked.
“Wouldn’t it be better if I just sat next to you like last time?” he teased, Zayne rolled his eyes. “Well to be clear, I sat next to you because you were adamant that you didn’t want to move.”
“Same difference.” Caleb replied, reaching for the chair before Zayne started scooting over. Caleb stared at him, unsure of whether to pull the chair out or sit on the space Zayne had unoccupied.
Zayne looked up at him, before patting the spot next to him. “Are you just gonna stand there? You’re the one that wanted to sit next to me.”
Caleb gaped, “No, I didn’t.” he replied defensively, choosing instead the seat in front of Zayne.
Grumbling, he began to take out his laptop while Zayne looked at him amusedly, a small smile gracing his lips.
Clearing his throat, Caleb opened up the document and turned the computer towards Zayne. Pushing his glasses up his nose, Zayne pulled it slightly. “So what do you do aside from haunting bookstores?” Zayne raised an eyebrow, not looking away from the screen in front of him.
“Clearly more than you.” he replied, scrolling through the document. Caleb chuckled mockingly, leaning back on his chair. “Yeah right.” he breathed out, purple eyes scanning the rest of the store once again. Somehow, this particular section seemed a lot cozier than it did the last time they were here. The jazz music playing in the background was creating the perfect ambience, he almost wanted to ask Zayne how he found this place. It isn’t particularly eye-catching from the outside, but then again, it would make sense for someone who studies as much as he does to find something like this.
“Everything looks good.” Caleb’s eyes snapped to look at him again, meeting his hazel green ones. “I can print it, I'm going to the library later anyways.” Zayne continued, turning the computer back towards him.
“I’ll go with you.” he winced internally, wondering why he even said that. Zayne tilted his head slightly, “Okay” he replied, beginning to write again in his notebook. Caleb followed suit, pulling out his own notebook and working on the equations he had abandoned to come here. Both of them, deeply concentrated in their own work, something that Caleb had been wanting for a long time. Losing himself in his work, he almost wanted to thank Zayne for it…. almost.
Time seemed to fly, the soothing sound of the music and the sound of writing, pages flicking, keyboards clacking. It wasn’t until started stretching that he looked out the window behind Zayne, seeing the sun setting, creating the perfect halo around him.
“What is it?” Zayne broke Caleb out of his trance, he cleared his throat. “Nothing.” he muttered, Zayne watched him as he started packing up his stuff. “We should probably go now just in case they run out of paper.” Caleb said, lifting himself off the chair.
Zayne nodded, grabbing his scattered papers and neatly piling them into his folder. Putting everything into his backpack he stood up, now face to face with Caleb. He jerked his head towards the door, both of them walking silently side by side. They were both greeted by the cool breeze, softly brushing against their faces.
Caleb often lost himself in his thoughts, most times becoming a hindrance to his own self. It usually happens when he has a lot on his mind, MC and Gideon were used to it but Zayne noticed his silence. The zoned out look in his eye, so he did what he knew best.
“So how did you get into airplanes?” Zayne asked, still facing forward. Caleb glanced at him, pursing his lips in contemplation. “Honestly… it was mainly the idea of it.” he said, choosing to focus on the sidewalk in front of him.
“The idea of it?” Zayne questioned, Caleb nodded.
“Open air, endless possibilities.” He said vaguely, he glanced at him out of the corner of his eye, “What about you Dr. Zayne?” he teased.
“How did you know you wanted to become a doctor? Out there saving lives.”
Zayne thought that maybe Caleb was deflecting, but why? Two can play at that game.
“Endless possibilities.” he repeated, a barely noticeable smile on his lips. Caleb rolled his eyes and nodded, clearly unsatisfied with his answer.
“Alright, well here's another.” Caleb said, Zayne nodded for him to continue,
“How did you meet MC?” he asked again, the curiosity has not faded in the time they had spent away from each other.
Zayne thought back to when they had met. MC had come up to him, they didn’t really have classes together and he never really thought about making friends. But she was persistent, since all students need some sort of art despite him not studying it, that’s where they met. An intro to music class where they had spent most of their time analyzing different tones of music, the functionality of it all. That first day of class they had sat next to each other, MC holding a pink puffy pen, he knew just from looking at her that she was what one might consider a ray of sunshine. A breath of fresh air, a stark contrast to the dull look in everyone else’s eyes. They had studied together, listening to different variations of the same song, apparently very good for bonding. And so, they stayed friends, often spending time together in the free time they have before one or the other has to leave for class. But they only got closer when she had come to a small realization.
“Music class.” he responded curtly, Caleb’s eyes widened, “Music?”
Zayne nodded, opening the door to the library and holding it. Caleb walked in, Zayne trailed after him.
“Huh.” Caleb let out softly, Zayne walked ahead of him, heading straight towards the printers. The slouchy flannel covering up his tall frame. Caleb couldn’t see Zayne in music, but then again… Zayne waved him over, standing next to him he looked down at it.
What?” he asked, staring down at the printer. “Go ask if we actually need to pay.” Zayne mumbled, Caleb side eyed him.
“Why me?” Zayne sighed heavily, grasping his shoulders and turning him towards the librarian's desk, “Because if we do we’re gonna cough up a lot of money for some paper, maybe you can turn on your charm or something.” a shit eating grin formed on Caleb’s lips but he chose to ignore it… for now, “literally how much could paper cost?” he asked, looking at him from over his shoulder.
“5 dollars.” Zayne deadpanned, Caleb immediately started walking to the librarian’s desk. There was an older lady sitting there, silver glasses framing her face, reminiscent of a certain raven haired guy right behind him. Reaching the edge of the counter, he leaned on it. She glanced at him before putting down her papers, “What can I do for you?”
“I had a question in regards to the printers,” he pointed behind him, not bothering to look. She raised a silver brow, waiting for him to continue, “So, is paying the 5 dollars mandatory or..” he trailed off. She stared at him, “Of course it’s mandatory.”
Caleb laughed lightly, “Yeah, yeah I thought so… but is there any way we can print without paying 5 dollars. I'm sure you can agree with me that 5 dollars seems a little steep for some paper.”
She shrugged her shoulders, “So?”
Caleb gritted his teeth, a false smile overtaking his face. “Why don’t you help out some struggling students, I mean when I saw you I just thought you were this kind and beautiful woman…” The librarian rested her head on her hands, “And how exactly did you get the assumption that I'm kind.”
“You know what? I think we’ll take our business elsewhere.” he huffed, the librarian smirking at him, and went back to her papers.
Caleb turned around, tossing his hands up in exasperation. Zayne turned around, fighting back his laugh. He didn’t think he would actually do it, well the charming part. Thanks to the silence of the library, he got to hear everything that was said. Zayne would have to talk to him about his methods of “charming”.
Caleb stood next to him, pulling out a five dollar bill, “Here, let’s just get out of here.” he muttered, an annoyed look in his purple eyes.
“What happened to ‘taking our business elsewhere’?”
Caleb glared at him, grabbing his hand and shoving the bill in his hands. “I’ll wait for you outside.”
“Pfft” Zayne let out, watching him open the door and step out into the night.
–
“Done.” Zayne called out to Caleb, who was sitting down on one of the benches, a book held in his hands.
“Thank god.” Caleb muttered, shoving his book back into his bag. He stood up from the bench and stretched. Zayne’s eyes flicked down to see the sliver of skin that was exposed before snapping back up to look at his face. “Are you doing anything else?” Caleb asked, fixing his jacket.
Zayne shook his head, “I’m just gonna go back to my dorm.” he replied, beginning to turn, Caleb nodded walking after him. “Do you dorm alone?” he asked.
“No, but it feels like it most of the time.” Caleb tilted his head in question, “Why?”
“He’s asleep more than he’s awake.” Zayne replied, thinking back to the silver haired boy. A small smile curled at his lips, “I don’t know how he does it.”
“He’s actually majoring in the same thing as MC.” he continued, Caleb nodded. Zayne shivered slightly as the cold autumn wind rustled through. Caleb glanced at him, beginning to shrug off his jacket. He handed it to him and Zayne raised an eyebrow, “You’re cold.” he stated, shoving his hands in his pockets.
“I’m always cold.” Zayne replied, but still slowly put on the leather jacket, suddenly overcome by the smell of cedar, but there was a sweetness that he couldn’t quite place. They continued the rest of their walk in silence, the sounds of other students beginning to shout as they got ready for whatever party was being thrown that day. Caleb was sure they had a party everyday, he didn’t understand how they had the energy for it all. Finally they reached the dorm doors, and they stopped. “I’ll see you in class.” Caleb said, taking in Zayne’s hazel green eyes, a faint flush from the cold now forming on his cheeks. He felt a light flutter deep within his belly, probably something he ate.
Zayne nodded, before beginning to walk up the stairs. Caleb watched until he disappeared.

Usually during this time, it was easy to laze around with Xavier, both of you lulled by the warm sun rays, the sound of chirping outside of the window providing a cozy feeling. But alas, the plants out in the balcony needed some caring for. Wilted leaves scattered across the floor, and soil that needed to be hydrated.
You sat there staring at the plants, taking in the breeze from the outside when all of a sudden you heard the sound of the screen door sliding open.
“Are you just gonna sit there and stare at them?” Xavier ruffled your hair, a soft smile gracing his lips as he took a seat next to you. Pouting you fixed your hair, “I was waiting for you.” Xavier chuckled, placing down the watering can on the floor and handing you some gloves. “We might need to re-pot the forget-me-nots” he said softly, leaning to the side to grab the brand new pot. You looked at him curiously, grabbing his arm to see it closer. It was round in size, the glossy deep green color shimmering slightly in the sun. “pretty” you mumbled, leaning your cheek on his arm. He hummed, setting it down and grabbing the older pot. Sitting up, you slipped on the gloves, grabbing it from him, while he opened a new bag of soil. You set the pot down on your lap, watching the small blue flowers sway in the sun, each of them standing proudly.
“Do you think they’ll like their new home?” you asked, your finger brushing against one of the petals. “I’m sure they’ll love it.” Smiling you began to push against the soil, loosening it up in order to free it without ripping any roots. Finally pulling it out, Xavier held the new pot in front of you, softly putting it in. He set it down, sprinkling more soil on top before handing you the watering can. “I don’t think I'm ready for this much responsibility.” you said, humor glittering in your eyes as you looked at him. Shaking his head softly, he smiled “I trust you.”
Taking the watering can from his hands you tilted it slightly in front of the flowers, watching as it showered them. The soft sound of the water sprinkling around. Xavier got up and knelt down in front of the other plants, shears in hand. Clipping away at the dead leaves. You set down the watering can, picking up the newly potted flowers and setting them down in their old place. Smiling as you gazed down at them. Arms wrapped around your waist from behind, Xavier leaning his head on your shoulder.
“We still have to clean up the leaves.” you said, melting into his embrace. He nuzzled your cheek, “We can do that later.”
A gentle smile graced your lips before slowly pulling his arms away. Turning around you looked up at him, softly placing a palm on his cheek. “If we finish this now, we can get some snacks and watch a movie.” He sighed, leaning his forehead on yours, “Okay.” pressing a small kiss on your lips. He pulled away, “Let’s hurry then.” grabbing the broom that was leaning against the wall. You sweeped while he held the dustpan, each of the leaves being thrown away. Both of you working silently, taking pleasure in these serene moments where you were just in the comfort of each other. Finally picking up the last of the leaves, Xavier quickly went to toss them in compost. Coming back and reaching to grab your cheeks, stopping him, “Let’s wash our hands first.” you grinned, pushing them down. He pouted slightly before agreeing. Walking inside and closing the door, you made your way to the sink in the kitchen, Xavier trailing behind you like a lost puppy.
Standing next to you, he looked down before putting his hand out, waiting for you to pump some soap. You side-eyed him, “Does the poor baby need help washing his hands?” you teased. The tips of his ears turned red, looking at you from the corner of his eye, “it’s closer to you.” he mumbled. Eyes softening, you reached for the bottle, pumping the soap. The fresh smell of citrus wafted into your nose, putting some into your own hands. The only sound that could be heard was the running water, you bumped your hip against his lightly. He turned to you, running his hands under the water. Booping his nose with some of the soap in your hands you giggled, Quickly washing off the soap and turning off the faucet.
“Where do you think you’re going?” he teased as he saw you try to run away, grabbing your waist from behind and pulling you against him. Giggling, you tried pulling away, “Xavier, we need to go get our snacks.” you said trying to be serious.
You felt him shake his head behind you, burrowing his face into your neck inadvertently cleaning his nose with your sweater. “We don’t need to do anything, we can just order delivery.” his breath tickling you. “Xavierrr…” you whined, turning around in his arms you gazed into his blue eyes, huffing before smiling softly. “Okay, I'm lazy anyways.”
He pressed you flush against him, leaning down and pressing his lips to yours. “We really have to order something star.” you mumbled against his lips, pressing your hands against his chest. He tightened his arms, lowering his head down, brushing his lips against your ear, “we’re still watching a movie right?” he mumbled. You chuckled, “That’s if you don’t fall asleep like you always do.” pulling his arms off you, grabbing your phone and plopping yourself down on the couch.
“Should we get the usual?” you asked, he settled down next to you, laying down on his side and resting his head on your thighs. You smiled down at him, running your fingers through his silver hair. He nodded, eyes fluttering closed. The warmth of the sun, shining through the windows. Basking the both of you, typing away at your phone, scrolling through the various options. While Xavier slowly let himself succumb to the comfort of your presence, lips parting slightly as he fell deeper into sleep.
A gentle smile graced your lips, lightly brushing his fringe away from his face. Putting your phone down next to you. Eyes scanning his face, your fingertip brushing the shape of his eyebrows, following the slope of his nose and then finally reaching his pink lips. Running your thumb across his bottom lip. Mesmerized by him and not noticing he opened one eye to peek at you. The corner of his lips lifting slightly, amused.
“See something you like?”
Pretending to think about it, looking off into the distance. “Hmm, I don’t know.” a teasing smile playing at your lips. He glared playfully, sitting up and squishing your cheeks together.
“Rethink your answer.”
“I rethink that I might have to go see Charlie to compare.” smirking at him, he furrowed his brows, eyes darkening. He leaned forward, capturing your lips in a fervid kiss. His hand cupping the back of your neck, tilting his head slightly, “You’re not going anywhere.” he mumbled against your lips. Your eyes fluttered closed, gripping his sweater, kissing him back with the same intensity. His tongue brushed your bottom lip, lightly prodding them open. You obliged, sighing softly against his lips.
Xavier deepened the kiss, pushing you down onto the couch. He pulled away, kissing down your neck. Your breathing heavy, reaching up to place your hand on his hair.
“Any changes?” he mumbled, lightly biting the space between your collarbone.
“I love you Xavier.” you breathed out, meeting his eyes as they softened with affection. Pulling him up for another kiss, running your hands down his back. He cupped your cheek, pulling away to look down at you. His thumb brushing against your cheek.

Waking Caleb up was a feat in itself. Gideon glared down at him sprawled out on his bed. He never really understood how the hell he managed to sleep through everything. Slowly he lifted his hand, gathering momentum. A loud slap echoed throughout the room, Caleb jumping up in shock, cradling his cheek. “What the fuck was that?” he yelped, staring at him wide eyed.
“Your alarm.” Gideon said in a monotone voice, flopping down on the chair.
Caleb rubbed his cheek, blinking groggily, “What time is it?” he asked, slowly pulling back the blankets.
Letting out a small hmm and pressing his finger to his lips, “Like 8:30?”
Caleb quickly laid back down and pulled his blankets back up. Gideon stared at him, “are you serious?” Burrowing his head under the blankets, Caleb heard Gideon groan before the blankets were ripped off of him.
“Omg what, why are you waking me up so early?” he complained, laying on his back and staring up at Gideon.
“MC sent me a text earlier that we should meet them at the bookstore around 9:30, and you are a pain in the ass to wake up sooo.” he shrugged, oblivious to the glare Caleb was throwing his way. Groaning, he slowly sat up and looked at Gideon as he was smiling and texting.
“Who are you texting?” he asked, getting off the bed. Gideon smirked internally, ‘you’ll love me for this one MC.’
“Oh just Zayne, MC ended up adding us to a group chat last night. I was gonna tell you but you just looked so peaceful sleeping.” a sly look flashed in his eyes as he watched Caleb clench his jaw, forcing a smile on his face. “Oh really? You could’ve just added me.”
Gideon faked a gasp, “Oh! I'm sorry Caleb, well it’s a good thing that we’re all gonna hang out today so you can definitely, definitely tell MC you want to be added to the group chat.” Caleb let out a forced laugh, “Why would I do that when I have you?”
Gideon looked up at him through his lashes, “hmmm that's true.. But I’m just having so much fun with my new best friend Zayne.” Caleb gritted his teeth, pushing himself up off the bed. Grabbing his stuff to take a shower.
“Don’t take too long!” Gideon grinned, Caleb glared at him and walked out.
Smirking to himself, he sent a quick message to MC, “Oh Caleb you’re too easy.”
—
They had all decided to meet at the quad, something about it being easier to walk there together, Caleb couldn’t really care less about it.
“Took you long enough.” MC teased placing her hands on her hips. Caleb waved her off, “Yeah, yeah.” his eyes flicking behind her to see the tall raven haired man. He was wearing a white long sleeve shirt with a navy vest. Caleb couldn't help but let his eyes rake down his body before centering again on his face where he was met with an eyebrow raise. Quickly looking away, “So are we ready to go?” Gideon asked, hoisting his backpack on his shoulders. They all nodded, starting to walk in the direction of the bookstore. MC and Zayne walked ahead of them, Gideon walking in pace with Caleb, “I’m kind of excited, you think it’ll be lonely there?” Caleb side eyed him, “What do you mean?” The breeze rustled the trees around them, “Sometimes the librarians aren’t as strict as they should be.” Caleb snorted, covering his mouth with this hand. “I’m serious! Some people really have no respect for others, they’re just being loud and I need quiet.” Gideon said, smiling. Caleb shook his head grinning, “I get what you mean.”
“You see!” Gideon said loudly, “So that’s why I didn’t end up staying at the library, I’m just trying to get good grades man is that too much to ask?” Caleb patted his shoulder, “I’m sure the bookstore is going to be everything you need.” Gideon grinned, clasping his hands together, “I agree, MC!!” he called to her, she stopped talking and turned, “I need to ask you something.” He said walking a little faster to reach her. She smiled confused, “Okay.” Caleb stared at him as he reached her and they continued walking, Zayne now replacing where Gideon was walking with him. An awkward silence filled the air between the both of them. Stuffing his hands in his pockets they both continued walking. Caleb watched as MC listened to whatever Gideon was telling her, waving his hands around as if he was telling a crazy story. He smiled slightly before looking around the street they were on. Zayne walked in silence beside him, seemingly unbothered by it. Caleb broke it, “So… how did you find it?” Zayne turned his head slightly, “find what?”
“The uhm” clearing his throat, “The bookstore.” Zayne let out an ah, “Honestly, I was just wandering around the area when I stumbled upon it.” he explained. Caleb bit his lip nodding, not really knowing what else to say.
“Have you started on the report?” Zayne asked, still facing forward. “Oh, no I haven’t actually.” he replied.
“Hm, shame.” Caleb furrowed his brows, “What does that mean?” he asked defensively. Zayne looked at him confused, “Well wouldn’t it be better if we finished faster?” he asked, hazel green boring into purple.
Caleb knew Zayne was right but, “I mean what’s the rush if we just started the assignment yesterday.” the words tumbling out of him like vomit. Even he knew that excuse sounded stupid. Zayne paused slightly, Caleb stopped with him. “I’m sorry if I offended you.” Caleb bristled, staring at the man in front him. “You didn’t-” Zayne cut him off, walking again, “let’s catch up to them before they leave us.” Caleb stared after him, scoffing in disbelief. Grumbling, he began to walk again.
“Here we are!” MC exclaimed happily, capturing the attention of people passing by. Gideon giggled, “Hey, it’s cute.”
Zayne walked in front of them, opening the door. They all walked in, Caleb took the time to admire the structure of it. The large glass windows allowed anyone to see inside. The door Zayne was holding was black, it felt… cozy. Zayne cleared his throat gesturing for Caleb to walk inside. Muttering a small thank you he stepped inside and was immediately greeted with the smell of books. It was comforting in a way, his eyes scanning the various shelves lined up in the store. Following MC and Gideon, they walked to the back of the store where there were various mahogany tables, people already sitting down and studying or reading there. MC walked to the corner where there was a large couch with a coffee table in front of it.
“Since we’re not actually studying today this should be good right?” she said softly, plopping down on the couch. Caleb looked around once more, about to sit next to MC, Gideon quickly took the spot next to her. Smiling cheekily at Caleb, “Hey I think there are some books on chemistry in here somewhere, you and Zayne should go check them out.” MC said, eyes glittering with mischief. He glared at her about to respond until the deep voice behind him spoke, “That’s not a bad idea actually.” Giving a tight lipped smile, “Okay.” placing his bag next to Gideon. Leaning down slightly, he murmured, “What are you two playing at?” purple eyes going back and forth between both of them. MC shrugged, pulling out her laptop, “Go, go.” Gideon ushered him off. Turning around he looked at Zayne, “lead the way.” Zayne held his gaze for a moment before turning and walking down one of the aisles. Caleb followed after him, the hushed whispering behind him made him turn back just to see MC and Gideon scramble to look busy.
Rolling his eyes he turned back to see Zayne stopped in front of one of the bookcases. A hand placed on his chin, glasses falling down the bridge of his nose. Choosing to stand behind him he looked at the plethora of titles. Stuffing his hands in his pockets, he spoke up, “I think it would be easier if we did our research online.” Zayne kept looking at the books, “Sure, but it doesn’t hurt to get some extra information.” Caleb rolled his eyes.
“I guess, ” he said under his breath. Zayne, hearing that, turned to look at him, a hard look in his eyes. “Well what do you suggest we do?” arms folded over his chest. Caleb looked at him confused, “What do you mean?”
Zayne wouldn’t budge, “I mean I’m trying to find a book that would help us get more information for our report. Do you have a better suggestion?” Caleb felt frustration bubbling up inside of him, clenching his fists and leaning forward into Zayne’s space. “We could literally just use the textbook or do our research online.”
Zayne’s eyes hardened, “Sure, but there’s nothing wrong with using outside sources. Why are you limiting yourself to just using the book?” Caleb nodded mockingly leaning on the bookshelf behind him. “I don’t really understand what the big issue is?”
Internally the civil side of Caleb was begging him to stop talking, here he was picking a fight, but there his stubbornness just kept on winning.
“The issue is that we could finish this assignment faster and create a clearer report if we use outside sources as well as using the textbook. I mean the professor literally said it was fine to do that.” Zayne stared at him with an annoyed look on his face.
Caleb grit his teeth, cheeks flushing slightly in embarrassment. Of course he should have known that the professor wouldn’t mind it, matter fact she would have gave them both a fucking reward for doing so.
“Fine, let’s do it your way.” he huffed, looking away. Zayne stared at him, before turning back around and grabbing the large book. He gestured to Caleb to follow him back. “Still would’ve been easier if we used the textbook and done our research online.” Zayne shot him a sharp look while Caleb raised his arms in defense.
“Just saying.”
They made their way back to where both MC and Gideon were sitting. Zayne looked around before his eyes landed on an empty table.
“Let's go,” quickly grabbing his bag, Zayne strode towards the table. Caleb followed after him after grabbing his bag from Gideon who just grinned cheekily.
They both sat at the table, Zayne started pulling out his laptop and Caleb couldn’t help but laugh.
Zayne raised an eyebrow, “So much for not going online and doing research.” Caleb quipped. Zayne looked at him as if he were stupid, “ I needed the laptop to write the report, or did you want to write it all out by hand.” Caleb heard MC and Gideon struggle to hold in their laughs from behind him.
Clearing his throat, Caleb faked a smile, “Right… I knew that.”
Zayne sighed, “I think you should sit next to me.” Caleb stared at him in question, “Do I really need to spell it out for you?” Zayne asked, annoyed. There was silence between the both of them. Meanwhile MC and Gideon couldn’t keep their eyes off of them, both of them giggling.
“We’re gonna be sharing a book so you need to sit next to me.”
The words tumbled out of Caleb’s mouth before he could stop them, “Well why can’t you just sit next to me?” Zayne paused what he was doing, “Are you serious?” he asked. Huffing in annoyance he stood up, pulling his chair next to Caleb’s and dragging his things on the other side. “There, happy?” he asked before putting the book between them. Caleb couldn’t help but grin, “Very,” tilting his head slightly. Zayne tensed slightly, clearing his throat “Anyways, I think we should share a document that way it’s easier instead of the both of us writing our own research and then having to create another document.” he explained, already pulling up the document on his computer. Caleb nodded in agreement, opening his own computer.
“Hold on, I still have the notes from yesterday.” Caleb pulled out his notebook from his bag and put it in the middle as well.
Zayne nodded, “I didn’t think we would have the chance to work together so I didn’t bring mine…Thanks.” Caleb smirked mischievously “Wow and here I thought you would be prepared for anything.”
“Well when you’re too busy studying your notes, it can be easy to forget to put them back in your bag.” he replied, eyes stuck on the computer in front of him. Caleb’s smirk fell, “Are you saying I don’t study?”
“No I didn’t say that, but since I asked you earlier if you had started on the report and you said no… well it can be pretty easy to deduce don’t you think?” He opened the book and flipped through some pages before finally reaching the chapter he wanted. Caleb let out a tense laugh, “right.”
MC appeared behind them, “Hey, I’m going to go get some coffee, do you guys want anything?” she asked softly, looking back and forth between both of them. They both nodded, “Hold on pips, let me give you some cash.” Caleb already reaching for his wallet, she shook her head, “No it’s on me.”
She patted both of their shoulders, “Just text me what you want, maybe this would be a good time to add Caleb to the group chat don’t you think?” She looked at Zayne pointedly, he looked at her confused before slowly nodding his head. Zayne pulled out his phone wondering what the hell she was talking about. ‘A group chat?’ Shifting slightly in his seat, he pulled up his messages and sure enough, there it was. MC and an unknown number which he could only assume would be Gideon. Sighing, he added Caleb.
“There.” he said softly.
Caleb pulled out his own phone, typing in his order, he turned to Zayne, “What did you want?” Zayne thought about it, “A coffee with extra sweetener and a slice of cake.” Caleb stared at him, a little surprised.
“What?”
“I just didn’t expect you to be the type to have a sweet tooth.”
A small smile pulled at Zayne’s lips, “Yeah well there’s a lot you don't know about me.”
Caleb couldn’t help but laugh, “Seems that way.”
They both locked eyes, Zayne’s eyes flicked down to look at Caleb’s lips before turning back to his computer. Caleb, oblivious to everything, didn't seem to notice. He continued blissfully unaware, they both worked in silence, the only sound heard was the pages turning. Keyboard clicking from both of them typing. Gideon watched from the couch, grinning from ear to ear. Whispering into his phone, “MC, maybe this will be easier than we thought.”
She laughed, “Alright, I’m almost there.”
Hanging up, Gideon opened the camera on his phone, quickly snapping a photo of them. A thought crossed his moment right then, ‘man this is fucking creepy’ shrugging his shoulders he sent it to MC.
A couple minutes later, she walked in carrying the drinks and a small bag. Gideon quickly got up to help her, taking their drinks from her hands while she went to hand Zayne and Caleb’s theirs. They both murmured a quiet thanks, Caleb pausing as he watched Zayne’s usually stoic expression light up slightly.
“You’re studying to become a doctor right?” he asked, taking a sip of his coffee. Zayne nodded, taking a small bite of the cake with his fork. There was something about sweets that he just couldn’t say no to. Sue him! He would just have to be really diligent with brushing his teeth.
Caleb rested his cheek on his hand, facing him, “Don’t doctors usually tell you to avoid eating too many sweets.”
Zayne deadpanned, taking another bite of the cake. “As long as the rest of my diet consists of well rounded foods, I don’t see what the problem is.”
Caleb chuckled, shaking his head slightly, “Just a bit ironic, no need to get upset doc.”
Changing the subject, Zayne started closing his laptop, “I think we made good progress, we can stop here for now.” Caleb arched a brow, “and here I thought you wanted to finish this today.”
Ignoring him, Zayne shifted slightly in his seat, getting himself more comfortable to eat his cake. Caleb scoffed following suit, shutting his laptop and began putting his things away. He couldn’t help but find it interesting that someone as… serious looking as Zayne would have a serious sweet tooth. Sighing slightly he could admit to himself that maybe the guy wasn’t that bad to be around but of course that wouldn’t stop him from being a pain in the ass. A small part of him wondered if there was ever a time where Zayne showed emotion. He was the kind of guy that looked cool without trying, the unapproachable type. Luckily, this time MC wouldn’t have to recount everything they did when they hung out, at least now he was there.
Maybe there was some part of him that got major FOMO, or it could be that there’s a part of him that just doesn’t want to be alone, the fear of losing the people he cares about plaguing his mind. Oh well, that’s a story for another time. Caleb leaned back on his chair, playing with the lid on his coffee cup. Yeah, it definitely wasn’t the second part at all.
—
It had been two days since they had gone to the bookstore. The incessant text’s coming in through his phone made him mute it. Not wanting to check but at the same time itching to see what they were saying in the group chat.
He could hear Gideon giggling from underneath the blankets, rolling his eyes as he focused on the model airplane in front of him. Grabbing different pieces that were scattered across his desk, trying to fight the urge to check his phone that kept lighting up.
‘Come on Caleb, just a couple more pieces and you can display the damn thing’ he thought, biting his lip in concentration.
All of a sudden Gideon jumped from his bed, startled, Caleb jumped as well, turning to look at him in disbelief. Not paying him any mind, he quickly threw on his jacket, “Imma go get a snack, i’ll be back.” he said from over his shoulder, slamming the door shut.
“Get me one too!” he yelled, hoping that maybe he might have heard him. Knowing Gideon though, he knew he probably didn’t. Grumbling, he grabbed his phone, eyes catching the myriad of texts. Each one floods his screen, most of them between MC and Gideon. Opening the group chat he scrolled through each of their messages, most of them just a bunch of stupid stuff. Both of them sending memes and laughing about it, until he caught one particular message.
Zayne: we’re at the cafeteria if you guys want to join.
Just straight to the point, but it was the reason why Gideon got up as if his ass was on fire. Brows furrowed, ‘Why didn’t Gideon tell me anything’ he thought, running his hands through his hair. That same feeling creeping back into him, jaw tensing at the thought of them being there without him.
“Dammit” he whispered to himself, tossing his phone to the side and setting himself back down on his chair.
He didn’t know how much time passed, the frustration gnawing at him but it helped him focus better. It wasn’t until he heard the door being opened that he broke out of his trance. The petty part of him choosing to continue working on the finishing touches of his model airplane. “Hey, I brought you this.” Gideon walked up behind him and placed an apple juice in front of him. Sure there was a part of him that felt bad for leaving like that but to be completely honest, he thought that the dumbass would follow after him. Caleb stared at it silently, choosing to ignore him instead.
“Caleeebbb,” he whined, sitting at the edge of his bed.
“If you would read the messages in the groupchat, you would have seen it and you wouldn’t be like this.” Caleb stayed silent, completely locked in… or at least that’s what he told himself. Sighing heavily, “Okay, I'm sorry that I didn’t tell you that they invited us to the cafeteria where I’m sure you would have had the most amazing time in your life.” Gideon smiled sweetly, batting his lashes.
Caleb side eyed him, silently grabbing the apple juice. “Great, so I'm forgiven.” Gideon clapped.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Caleb asked quietly, taking a small sip from the juice. Gideon’s smile faded, now how the hell was he supposed to tell him that it was because he wanted to see if Caleb would stay at the dorm and sulk or if he just would have shown up randomly. Laughing awkwardly, “So you see… ahem… ummm, Oh shit I think I’m getting a call.” Gideon quickly grabbed his phone and walked out. Caleb stared after him, a newfound resentment building up inside of him. What did Zayne have that he didn’t? Of course, there’s nothing wrong with having new friends (not according to him), but… was it really that much better to hang out with Zayne? Grumbling, he turned back around, finally placing the last piece. He stared at it for a while, his mood dampening his own accomplishment, he couldn’t even really feel happy for finishing it.
Unbeknownst to Caleb, Gideon was getting smacked by MC for his idiocy. “How the hell are we supposed to get them together if you’re pulling this shit.” glaring at him.
“I just thought, you know… Caleb has always been the jealous type so….” he trailed off, looking at her expectantly. MC arched a brow, arms crossed.
Sighing heavily, “What better way to get them closer…” he smiled sheepishly.
“You’re an idiot, if anything that’ll just make him mad you moron.”
“Well I didn’t think about that.” he whined, pouting slightly.
“Yeah, no shit.” she groaned, rubbing her face in frustration.
Sighing heavily she began thinking of a way to salvage this. Snapping her fingers, “Okay so here’s what we're gonna do, since the weekend is coming up we need to find a way to get them to come closer. What better way than to spend it hanging out AS A UNIT." She emphasized the last part.
“Party?” he asked, MC immediately shook her head. “Hell no, can you imagine dragging Caleb, let alone Zayne to a fucking party?”
Gideon shrugged, “No we need to start small, because yes you’re right we can use Caleb’s stupid jealousy but not right now.” she smirked.
“Since you made this mess, you have to fix it. We’re all gonna hang out this weekend, watch a stupid movie and YOU will provide the snacks as punishment.” she jabbed a finger to his side. Recoiling, he threw his hands up, “Fine whatever.”
“I’ll convince Zayne, you just tell Caleb.” Her eyes narrowed, “Don’t mess this up.”

Caleb prided himself in his patience (or lack thereof). He thought of himself as someone who anyone could rely on and yet, there was one person who managed to constantly get under his skin. Here was this guy, who was effortlessly better than him. Caleb always knew he was smart, passing his exams with perfect scores, of course that wasn’t where his success ended. He was always more popular, his looks made him desirable. MC of course, his best friend since childhood never really understood, but that never stopped her from meddling in his love life.
Zayne, a close friend of MC who just happened to be better at everything. The one that surpassed Caleb in everything, academics, looks (apparently the stoicism really does it with the ladies), and worst of all, he was stealing his best friend.
Caleb sighed heavily as he watched MC and Zayne smiling. Both of them, sitting at a table at the opposite end of the cafeteria. He felt a hand clasp his shoulder, “What are you looking at?” Gideon sat next to him, setting down his tray. Following his line of sight he chuckled, shaking his head. Caleb glanced at him from the corner of his eye, “What” he asked. Gideon smirked, turning slightly to face him. “You stare any harder and you’ll burn a hole into Zayne.” Caleb scoffed, rolling his eyes, he grabbed a slice of orange and stuffed his mouth. Gideon let out a loud laugh, adjusting in his seat. “You know, you could go over there and join them instead.” taking a bite of his sandwich.
Caleb continued staring at them, “I just don’t see why she didn’t want to join me this time.” he huffed, annoyed at the whole situation. Gideon rolled his eyes, putting a small bag of gummies on Caleb’s tray. “She can hang out with whoever she wants.” taking another bite of his sandwich, “plus, Zayne is a good guy, he’s smart-” Caleb’s eyes hardened, “he’s a little on the quiet side but hey.” he said with his mouth full. All of a sudden both MC and Zayne stood up from the table and started walking towards the exit. Caleb perked up slightly, watching them. Gideon continued eating next to him, stealing back the bag of gummies. “So what classes do you have today?” he asked Caleb, popping a gummy in his mouth. Caleb broke his gaze from the exit, looking down at his own sandwich.
“I have Chemistry and Art in a bit.” He replied, already annoyed at the fact that he would have to see the raven haired man. Gideon nodded, wiping his hands with a napkin. “So I guess I’ll see you later then?” he asked, beginning to get up from his seat. Caleb nodded, taking a bite from his sandwich. Gideon patted his shoulder, before walking off. All of a sudden he felt another presence next to him, a girl with long brown hair. “Hey Caleb,” she smiled, “what class do you have next?” Caleb smiled politely, internally wondering who the fuck she was. “Uh, chemistry.” she hummed, looking slightly disappointed. “I see, then… Do you want to hang out later?” she asked, a flirty smile pulled at her glossy lips.
Caleb smiled apologetically, “I’m sorry… who are you?”
Her smile dropped, face flushing in embarrassment. “O-oh sorry, I just t-thought…” she stuttered, looking everywhere but him. Caleb tilted his head to the side, not really understanding what was going on. “I’m just gonna go.” she squeaked, jumping up from the seat and speed walking away. He stared after her, confused before turning back to his tray. He quickly finished his food before checking the time. “Shit” he muttered to himself, picking up his things and walking to his next class.
—
Walking into the lab, Caleb looked around trying to find an empty seat. Eyes catching raven hair, his head bent over looking into a book. He sighed heavily, sitting at a table closest to the door. Pulling out his notebook he noticed someone take a seat next to him. Not paying them any mind he continued flipping through his notebook. “Sorry that i’m late!” the professor walked in, hastily putting down her bag on the desk at the front of the room. “So I did tell you guys in the beginning of the semester that we were going to do a group project right?” everyone murmured in agreement, she smiled slightly, “I decided to change that.” she said sheepishly. Stepping in front of the desk, taking a look around the room. “I think it would be better if I assign you into pairs instead, that way there’s no groups with uneven numbers.” she smiled.
Clearing her throat she grabbed a sheet of paper from her files, “okay! I don’t want to hear anything about switching partners, or whatever, it’ll give you a chance to meet someone new anyways.” Caleb shifted in his seat, pleading to whatever god was hearing him to not pair him up with Zayne. Surely his luck would be better than that. She continued calling out names, none of them his or Zayne’s until finally…, “.. and last but not least, Caleb and Zayne.” She looked up, “Since you guys already know the premise of the project I’ll leave you guys to introduce yourselves and organize everything. If you have any questions feel free to come up.” Turning back to her desk. Caleb stared blankly before slowly turning his head to look at Zayne.
Everyone had already started moving seats, sitting with their assigned partner, Caleb begrudgingly stood up from his seat, pressing his notebook to his chest as he walked to Zayne’s table. “Hey,” he said plainly, pulling out the chair next to him. Zayne glanced at him from the corner of his eye, “Hi” he said, putting his pen down.
“So I think we should start with doing the easiest formulas and then calculating their reaction rates.” Zayne said, flipping his notebook to a new page. Caleb nodded, “I’ll go get what we need then.” Caleb stood up from the seat, walking to the back of the room. Zayne turned discreetly, watching Caleb, eyes raking over his broad figure. Clearing his throat he turned back around, green eyes scanning the rest of the class. Everyone else chatting and getting along.
“This should be all we need for today right?” Caleb’s voice broke him out of his trance, Zayne nodded in acknowledgment. Grabbing the beaker from his hand and placing it on the table in front of him, they both got to work.
What surprised Caleb the most was how easily they were able to work together, but it frustrated him more than anything. Glancing at him from the corner of his eye. How was it that this guy was good at everything when he himself is good at everything. Huffing slightly, he wrote down their observations.
“Is something wrong?” Zayne asked, keeping his eyes on the materials in front of him. Caleb shook his head, “No, just thinking about something.” All of a sudden their professor's voice broke through.
“Alright guys, I think you’ve all made good progress, please do whatever you need to do to keep in contact with your partner…” Caleb drowned her out instead turning to Zayne, “I should get your number then.” handing him his phone. Zayne stared for a bit before punching in his number. Handing it back to him, Caleb sent him a quick message, “There now you have mine.” he said, beginning to stand up. Zayne’s phone chimed at the same time, “Okay then we’ll figure out where to meet so we can start on the report.” he said, turning around and not waiting for a reply. All Zayne could do was stare after him.

“...So then, Zayne and I ended up going to this bookstore to see if they had a limited edition copy of the book I wanted and guess what! They did!” MC exclaimed, excitement shining in her eyes as she retold the events that happened earlier today. Caleb laid on his bed, playing one of his favorite games on his DS. “Wow, that's crazy.” he said plainly.
“Right? I wouldn’t have even thought to check there if it wasn’t for him.” she said happily, taking a sip from her soda. Caleb let out a hmm in acknowledgement, the whole conversation annoying him beyond hell. Sue him for not wanting to share his best friend, especially when this is the first time they’ve hung out in a while and all she’s doing is talking about Zayne.
“...-today?” Caleb broke out of his thoughts turning his head, “Sorry what?” MC rolled her eyes, “I said, how was class today?” leaning back on the chair.
“Class was class.” he replied, MC scoffed “yeah and you weren’t going to tell me that you’re paired up with Zayne?”
‘Here we go’ Caleb thought, already preparing himself for another conversation filled with Zayne. Thankfully, some God must’ve felt Caleb’s despair because Gideon walked into the dorm. Caleb sat up quickly, “Hey, I thought you said you were going to the library?” Gideon grumbled tossing his backpack onto the floor before flopping onto his own bed. “I was but there was literally nowhere to sit, all of a sudden everyone wanted to be studious and go to the library.” MC laughed, swiveling the chair around and patting his back.
“You could’ve just studied here.” she said, Caleb nodded in agreement. “It’s not the same.” Gideon mumbled into his pillow. MC ‘s eyes then lit up, “Hey! The bookstore that Zayne took me to has a small section where you can study, it seemed relatively empty when we were there. You can check it out tomorrow!” she said happily, Gideon lifted his head slightly, “where is it?”
“Literally, not even 5 minutes from here.”
“Down.” flopping his head back down onto the pillow.
MC turned to Caleb, “Don’t think I forgot about what I asked you earlier.” she said, folding her arms over her chest.
Caleb had gone back to playing his game, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Caleeebbb,” she whined, “Zayne is really nice and it would be very very great if you got to know him.” she said cheekily. Caleb side eyed her, “for what.”
“You need more friends.” she said plainly.
Gideon let out a loud laugh, “fucking loner.” MC glared at him, “I didn’t mean it that way.. I just think.. It would be nice if you hung out with someone other than us, you know?”
Caleb rubbed his face in frustration, “I’m fineee, please don’t set up any playdates for me.” Both Gideon and MC stared at him blankly.
“What?” he asked, “A guy can’t have just two friends?”
“Nothing is wrong with that but damn Caleb, broaden your horizons a little.” Gideon said, still face down on the pillow.
“I hope you suffocate.”
“I love you too.”
“Guys please. Look Caleb, Zayne can be really funny when he wants to and I just think it would be great if my two best friends could get along.” clasping her hands together, “and maybe date.” she muttered to herself. Gideon grinned having heard it since he was closer. Pushing himself up to a seated position he placed his hands on MC’s shoulders, “I completely agree, I think you should give this Zayne guy a chance. Plus why are you so against him anyways.” He said, smirking.
“I-i’m not, I just… whatever we can all hang out tomorrow since you’re making such a big deal out of this.” Caleb closed his DS and got under the covers. “Please see yourself out, woman.”
MC grinned, jumping up and grabbing her bag, “Thank you kind sir, I will see you both tomorrow.” Winking before closing the door. Gideon giggled slightly before getting up as well, “I’m gonna go shower, I’ll be back.” Caleb waved him off, turning to his side. There wasn’t really anything bad about Zayne, but… Caleb also couldn’t understand why he got under his skin so easily. Well, he did know actually but he would rather die before admitting it to anyone else. He could already imagine the amount of teasing he would get from both MC and Gideon if they knew that he was just jealous that he was a little better at everything. What didn’t help was that Caleb knew that it was all one sided. He kinda wished that it was reciprocated, then he wouldn’t feel like a complete dick. “This fucking sucks.” he mumbled, shutting his eyes already dreading tomorrow.
