Child: “ I said I don’t like when God paints us like this.”
Mother: “ Paint you like what, snookie?”
Child: “ Made me like this!”
Mother: “ What’s wrong with being brown?”
Child: “ Because some people don’t like their skin color?”
Mother: “ And you should, right?”
Mother: “ Do you know grownups who are brown and who are beautiful?”
Mother: “ Is Essie beautiful?”
Mother: “ What color is she?”
Mother: “ Is Jalicia beautiful?”
Mother: “ What color is she?”
Mother: “ Is Naraya beautiful?”
Mother: “ What color is she?”
Mother: “ No, she’s brown too. She’s just a lighter brown? Is Auntie Stacey beautiful?”
Child:[whines] “ I don’t want to-”
Mother: “ Is Auntie Stacey beautiful?”
[Child turns around and whines]
Mother: “ Listen! Look at Mommy. Look at me!”
Child:[crying] “ I’m not happy!”
Mother: “ Alisia , look at me now.”
Child: [turning around and crying] “ I’m not happy!”
Mother: “ Your skin color is something you can not change. And there’s a lot of people who are lighter than you who try to be your color. Do you understand me? So that means you have a beautiful skin color, and a lot of people want your skin color. And people that are your skin color do great and amazing things. And you have to learn that you can be one of those people!”
Child: “ Another person, a little one.”
Mother: “ Makaila is brown and beautiful. You’re right. So you should feel happy that you’re brown because you know so many cool, great, amazing, beautiful, smart people that are also brown.”
Child: “ Makaila is mean with her friends!”
Mother: “ She’s mean sometimes, but everybody’s mean sometimes. So can we make a deal that you’ll try to think how you can be a great, beautiful brown girl?” [Child nods] Okay. And love your brown skin? [Child nods] Alright.”
