i've only really had cats as pets my whole life and i had not realized that clingy cats are not the same as clingy dogs. my cat, when she decides that i have to pay attention to her, just makes herself at home under my skin. i got used to an animal that just does what they want to do all the time.

i got a dog recently. she does not do what she wants without whining at me for permission first. i have never denied her permission to come lay next to me on the couch or to play with her toy or to drink her water. but she looks at me for approval every time regardless, and if i don't understand what she's requesting, she will just whine louder. naturally.

she has also started whining at the cat. because the cat will sit right by her toy to bait her into an ambush attack. but if the dog asks nicely, she fucks off. there is a whole hierarchy in this household created and upheld by my children. and my cat thinks she is at the top. and she might as well be.
