The Rotation
Every restaurant has a floor plan, and the hostess is the queen of that. There are numbered zones, and each waiter or waitress is assigned to a zone. The hostess carefully distributes customers to those numbered zones on a rotation to ensure that every member of the waitstaff gets an equal amount of tables throughout the night, which prevents zones from being skipped or being double sat. This means that everyone will end up making around the same amount of money from tips that night. A hostess that is capable of handling a rotation will keep everyone happy and equal, but a hostess that cannot follow a rotation will be giving more or less money to the servers.
There is very much a reason that every restaurant has a large “PLEASE WAIT TO BE SEATED” sign. They do not want you to seat yourself. They hate it when you seat yourself. Seating you is someone’s job, and no one knows where better to put you than the hostess.
What will happen if you seat yourself/move from your assigned seat:
You will throw off the carefully orchestrated rotation
You will not get service if you are out of zone
If in zone, you will get very poor service
On the seating chart, the table you are currently at will not be marked off, and other customers will be taken to that table as well
You will throw off the carefully orchestrated rotation
I can guarantee you, throwing the rotation out of order is the biggest offense you can commit while dining out. Most of the time, the hostess will ask you “Would you like a table or a booth?” And I bet you’d answer booth, and we are more than happy to take you to a booth. But when the hostess greets you and then asks “Is a table okay?” they are internally having a panic attack, praying to the good lord above that you say “Yes, yes a table is okay, please take us wherever you need to.” For the best experience at the restaurant: please, take the table. The hostess is asking this for a reason. They know where to seat you to ensure you get the best service, and the best service will be given when the rotation stays in order. If there are no booths available in the zone that is next to be seated, please cooperate and take a table. If you say no, a table is not alright, then you are causing all hell to break loose. A server will know that they were just skipped, and all that means to them is less money for the night. The server in the zone you are in now will not have had enough to take of care of their last table fully yet, which means they will be rushed in getting to you. The hostess is on your side and will try to get you the best available seat, but when you do not cooperate with us, we cannot promise good service.
At my place of work, every other guest that comes in says “We’d like to sit next to the salad bar, please.” Well, let me tell you something: there are eight booths near the salad bar, and three tables. What makes you think that you can waltz into a restaurant on a Saturday night, without a reservation, and request a specific section? Chances are that it’s full, and I don’t want to throw the rotation out of whack to accommodate your preference. I’m not going to skip over a server (who I know needs the money) and give you to a server that’s been overworked all night. And to be completely honest, even if it’s not full, I still won’t give you one of those precious salad bar booths, because I’d rather give it to the elderly couple behind you so they don’t have to walk very far—I would gladly screw up the rotation to make them as comfortable as possible. But you, sir, with your fully functioning legs, can walk twenty feet across the room. In a restaurant, you are the guest. Keep that in mind, and please respect the rotation.
I explained to a customer once how it works. They literally did not care, they just wanted their booth. It sucks big time.
There is nothing more blatantly evil than people who want to take away free school lunches. How do you even begin to justify that. Being against free school lunch programs is literally saying you don’t think actual children deserve to eat. Many kids in these programs rely on free lunches as they ONLY meal they get in a day. How the fuck do these people sleep at night. How can you live not giving a shit that children starve
Teamwork makes the dream work
Lately I've been feeling like no one does anything. There's nothing that annoys me more than a person standing on the line while there's a full bucket of silverware and 3 racks of glasses to be done. I've spent my nights polishing silverware while someone stands 3 feet from me saying they're bored. I get that it's tedious work, but it's what we all signed up for. It also annoys me when people start their roll ups at the beginning of dinner, but don't finish them so the bussers don't take them and only have to do 10 and walk out the door. I've addressed it to management, without being a snitch, so we'll see what happens with that...
I understand that people want to make their money and leave, but it's kinda shitty to leave your fellow coworkers to clean up the entire restaurant when you didn't do anything all night.
All the time..... 😡
It's not my choice...
It snowed a few weeks ago, and we had to open. It wasn't a terrible storm, enough to make the roads difficult to drive in, but not bad enough for us to close. Apparently making around $300 in sales is totally worth it to pay 8 employees (foh and boh) to be there. But that's not the point. We're always open when it snows. Unless absolutely no one can get there, we don't close. It will be dead for about 2 hours until the first customer comes in, and they always, ALWAYS say the say thing....
"I can't believe you guys are open, it's so bad out there. Why did they make you come in?"
Because you come in...
"Thank you so much for being open, we appreciate it. Everywhere else is closed."
It's not my decision, I'd close if it was. Those places are smart...
Did I say alcohol?
Me: hello, how are you today? May I start you off with something to drink?
Customer 95% of the time: no thanks I have to drive. I'll just have a water.
Me (in my head): is water not a drink?
Me (to customer): okay sure, would you like lemon?
It's been a while.
I have no idea if any of my followers are still here, but I miss venting. I can't tell you the last time I posted, but I'm hoping to be back at least once a week. I'm more of a once a month hostess now, and serve tables full time. Business is slow, but hey, it's winter in new york (although yesterday felt like spring). Still at the same place doing the same damn thing. But there's new people and new stories! I'll tell more when I'm not a few drinks deep! Good night and may the tip gods be in your favor.
We have to watch payroll!
Well then, why are there 6 servers on when we can survive with 4? Why do we have 2 hostesses on when I used to host by myself 4 nights a week? Why are there 3 managers on salary when we only need 2? Why on earth do you think it's a smart idea to put me, your highest paid hostess who shouldn't really be hosting after 4 years, on Friday night instead of one of your lower paid hostesses? Yea sure pay me $13 an hour for 7 hours. But God forbid I clock in 15 minutes before my shift.... I really think i need a vacation and soon. California is calling my name.
It’s ironic.
When I worked in fast food for minimum wage, they would yell at us and lecture us about “stealing” fries and burgers (while we had to throw out TONS of food every day) as though the giant billion-dollar corporations of McDonald’s and Sonic couldn’t afford to give their employees something to eat (while not even paying us a living wage).
Now I work at an upscale restaurant (it’s fancy, like celebrities eat there fairly often) and not only do I make WAY better money but they give us 2 free meals a day (eaten on the clock) and they’re GOOD. Today I got baked cod, spring rolls, rice pilaf, stir fry, and mashed potatoes and eggplant. Oh, and free espresso and juice. From this restaurant owned by a local man who is in no way a billionaire.
Obviously money is not the issue, valuing your employees as people is.
I have worked at Cafeterias, fast food, all the way up to 3 & 4 stars… and I’ve never worked anywhere when some amount of food wasn’t included in your job… And… just for clarification… I’ll repeat… I’ve worked fast food. Working at a restaurant there is absolutely no reason not to feed your employees… If you own a restaurant, you can feed your employees for a fraction of what it costs them to buy your food… it’s a no brainer as benefits go… If you work for a restaurant that doesn’t want to feed you for free, you’re probably working someplace terrible.
yeah when i (very very briefly) worked at a Jimmy Johns the employee discount was a whopping fifty cents, and it only applied if you were already on the clock or within ten minutes of your shift.
as opposed to when i worked for a single guy who owned a bar and fed all of his employees for free.
Some days, my free meal is the only thing getting me through the stress of the industry. If they aren’t feeding you, you should be working elsewhere.
I dont know about the rest of you, but most the time my free meal is all i eat for the day.
If we have extra cooked bakers or mashed or cooked sides left over at the end of the night most of us cooks put them out back bc there are some servers who’ll always take it home. Around the holidays I heard one server say that money was tight so the stuff she was taking home would feed her family for the next couple days. Whoevers making staff meal also usually makes a LOT so there’s extra people can box up and take home too.
And we always offer stuff to the dishwashers too because a lot of them will take it home too.
In my restaurant, only the managers and cooks eat for free. The foh has a cheaper menu to order off of ($3-$5), or we can use our 30% discount and order off the regular menu . Even working a 12 hr shift doesnt get you a free meal. Sometimes the manager will comp our meal if we had to go run an errand. The only way to get free food is to be cool with the cooks. But there's only 2 that will make us food and you have to catch them on a good day.
Being weird payed off
Normally I'm in autopilot with all my tables. But tonight i had a family of 3, mom dad and son . They were super nice and cool throughout their whole meal. At the end the meal, the dad asked his son if he wanted dessert and started singing happy birthday. Completely out of nowhere I was all like "it's your birthday and you weren't going top two me?!" The son replied "well it's tomorrow." I asked him if he was going to be in for dinner tomorrow and he said no because he had a dance to go to. I asked him if he liked ::our complementary dessert:: and he said yes. I told him okay I'll be right back. I returned with the dessert and two candles, and told him, "don't worry I won't sing, but happy early birthday!" The mom said I was so cute for bringing out the dessert and I think I made the kid's day. After they were done I told the son to enjoy hours birthday and to have fun at the dance. Dad left me 30 on $75. I thought I was weird, but maybe I should be more often.
I'm over it
I’m so over entitled fucks coming to my bar.
I might explode if one more person talks to me like I’m a kindergartener when I have a bachelors degree. And the only reason I work this shit job is because I need the money to pay off student loans.
I don’t know what I want to do with my degree (and I’m sure a lot of you are in this pocket) but we don’t deserve to be treated like dog shit just because someone doesn’t want to cook dinner or make their own vodka soda once in awhile.
Food and bev jobs are literally soul-sucking, and maybe that’s why I don’t give a fuck anymore.
So if you’re reading this and you think you’re at the end of your rope, just know that you aren’t alone.
I'm in almost the same boat. I have an associates degree, but I'm pursuing a bachelor's. No Idea what I want to do with it.
Time for a name change?
I am not sure if I should change my name. I haven't hosted in a while and I'm not sure if I will be hosting anymore. I've been serving full time and I'm happy about it. However, I don't have any stories. My guests normal. It's actually very boring lol.
To the one about the mean girls. I've been called fat twice at my job. And the first time someone defened me and the second time people just laughed. Speak up.
Im sorry that happened to you! I'll never understand being downright mean to fellow coworkers, like we're both here obviously you're not better than me and vice versa. I ended up saying something one night while we were all sitting down eating dinner after hours. They were talking about how she sucked as a server,(like that justified them) and I basically put them in their place. She quit because they were all passing around a picture of her hair and making fun of it and her. When that was brought up they were all just like “well she sucked anyways so she would have been fired soon.” I’m surprised one of them said that because our manager was right there. He scolded her, but not enough to make her really care, and said that “something like that should never happen here” and that he was “disappointed to hear how they were acting.” She brushed it off but I chimed in saying that “just because she sucked it doesn’t give them a right to personally attack someone.” They ended up moving to another table and talked about God knows what.
I just realized I'll be hosting the night of Super Bowl Sunday and I work in a place with lots of tvs. ( not Buffalo Wild Wings ) Help
My restaurant was always dead super bowl sunday. But we only have 3 tvs and a bar that only hold like 30 people, definitely not the spot for the biggest sport night. How's your restaurant set up? Tvs everywhere like a sports bar or in just one part? I'm assuming you're going to be dealing with customers that want to sit near a tv. It should be on a first come first serve basis. People can wait, but they'll probably be waiting a while lol. My best advice is to remain calm, keep an eye on wait times, and watch how quickly your tables are eating. I find that most people have parties at their homes, so it might be a big Togo day. Remember, you are in control!
Everybody gets a raise!
Server wage went from $5 to $7.50 this year. Sounds like a good thing because you’ll get an actual paycheck. However there is no more overtime. We can’t pick up any extra shifts that will put us over. Goodbye to the 55hr work weeks pulling in $1200, goodbye to that extra shift that’ll pay for the health insurance, hello closely monitored hours and early cuts because of pay roll. And hello new employees that will eat up everyone’s o.t. hours.
So everybody nets a pay cut.
Pretty much. Everyone was so excited about their $80 paychecks, but I'm upset I can't pick up a $130 dinner shift now.
lets be friends omg
Abso-fucking-lutely! Lol
