In the damp atmosphere of Fern House of Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK, the Platycerium bifurcatum (staghorn fern, antelope ears, elkhorn fern) is developing new fronds. This evergreen, epiphytic fern has heart-shaped sterile fronds that secure the plant and grey-green, arching, fertile fronds that project like antlers.

The pungent smell is meant to attract carrion flies, which spread its pollen from flower to flower and help this South Asian rainforest plant reproduce. The parasitic corpse flower has no stem, leaves, or roots. Instead of using energy from the Sun to make nutrients, it draws all of its nourishment from its host, a species of vine in the grape family.🪰

I’ve had this Tillandsia (Ionantha?) for years and when I saw some of its leaves turning red I thought, no wonder it’s dying. I never really understood how to take care of it. But no, death wasn’t what it was about. I guess this is how it blooms. It looks like birthday candles!
