Last days to wear a straw hat
Clearly you guys like danger, have you never heard of
Okay the summary posted in this image does NOT do the WILDNESS of this occurrence justice so I will give some more detail.
All right, so straw boater and Panama hats became trendy in the U.S. in the late 19th century, but it was considered “bad form” for men in cities to wear them. It later became more “acceptable” for men to wear these specific hats ONLY during summer. By the early 20th century, there was like an unwritten “rule” that they had to stop wearing straw hats and start wearing felt or other types of hats on September 15. This is already kind of weirdly specific, but, y’know, etiquette rules surrounding attire are known to BE weirdly specific, so fine. But here’s where it gets full on wacky.
According to Wikipedia, it became a Thing in North American cities for teens to literally accost any man wearing a straw hat on or after September 15, knock his hat off, and stomp on it to destroy it. It was also “socially acceptable” for stockbrokers (i.e. grown-ass adults) to destroy each other’s straw hats, but NOT acceptable for any other adult strangers to do it to each other. It became so much of a tradition that newspapers would print warnings close to the date reminding people to switch hats. Basically men wearing straw hats after the designated date would at minimum risk ridicule, but might also have their head smacked and their property destroyed by Youths. And this “hat bashing” was apparently fine and dandy from both legal and social perspectives so long as it happened after September 15.
BUT THEN.
On September 13, 1922, a group of teens in New York City decided to begin their shenanigans two days early, and knocked off and stomped the hats of some factory workers. When they moved on, and tried this with a group of dock workers, however, the “more innocuous stomping” turned into a “brawl” because these men weren’t having any of this nonsense and fought back. More people were pulled into the fighting, which eventually blocked traffic on a nearby bridge and had to be broken up by police.
But that was not the end of it! It seems that events “escalated” and continued into the following day! On the evening of September 14, “teenagers prowled the streets wielding large sticks, sometimes with a nail driven through the top, looking for pedestrians wearing straw hats and beating those who resisted.” THIS IS A REAL THING THAT HAPPENED. Men wearing straw hats still within the completely arbitrary acceptability period were getting beaten up by roving gangs of children with clubs. Several people were hospitalized. According to one man who had his hat stolen on Amsterdam Avenue, there were upwards of 1,000 kids there stealing and destroying boaters and Panamas. Police eventually started making arrests (some teens even attacked cops and stomped their hats).
Most of the youths who got arrested were punished with fines, but at least one kid was sentenced to three days in jail by the circumstantially-hilariously-named Magistrate Peter A. Hatting. Some boys younger than fifteen had their parents called in and were “spanked ignominiously” at a police station at a cop’s order.
Anyway the Hat Stomping Tradition continued for a few more years and in 1924 a guy got straight up murdered for wearing a straw hat past September 15. But then straw boater hats fell out of fashion especially after the Great Depression hit, Panama straw hats got even more popular so it was less acceptable to hate on them, and the whole thing died out.
Start Date: 1922 …no end date though? I like the insinuation
Not me sitting in a lawn chair with a flashlight and a hockey stick chasing away raccoons from the baby kitten underneath our deck who refuses to come out! Been trying to trap this kitten for 2 days. We were in bed and then I heard a SCREAM so now I’m on the kitten night watch. Chasing away raccoons. I’ve seen the same one six times now in the last 2.5 hours
Don’t know if the scream was the kitten or the raccoon just being a raccoon and no idea if kitten is injured but here I am at 1:44am sitting in my deck with a hockey stick and very sleep deprived guarding this dumbass kitten who won’t come out from under the deck
Kitten is too light to trigger the cage to close so I’ve got a bottle and string rig set up. Been trying to catch this backyard goblin for 4 days now. Just living under our deck lol
The orphaned kitten in question who refuses to be caught but loves wet food
CAUGHT
We live in the drawer and are Very Feral and Very Spooky but the rage is melting away a little bit everyday
We’ve got really bad ringworm but look how far we’ve come!! We had our first vet appointment earlier this week and we’re doing so great despite the ringworm and intestinal parasites. We even had our first bath this week.
We have unlocked some levels
Thought I’d update y’all! We’re currently fostering this bébé after trapping him when he was living under our deck for about five days.
We’ve been calling him Woodley; he’s about 9/10 weeks old with a really bad case of ringworm that’s resulted in almost complete hair loss of his tail. He had his first round of vaccines and dewormer and is being treated for the ringworm and some intestinal parasites.
He is an incredibly spicy foster baby. I’ve fostered around 28 feral kittens (most from the neonatal age) because I used to be a veterinary technician. Somehow even after my employment I just keep finding feral kittens. The curse of the vet tech lmao
Anyway, he’s getting boosters and his FeLV (feline leukemia) test in a few weeks and will have been about a month into his ringworm treatment by then and hopefully can get him into a rescue group while still fostering him because we have a cat dad extraordinaire adult cat who LOVES foster kittens and teaches them the all important cat socialization, grooming, and healthy play.
Unsure about coat length, I would guess he’ll be a medium hair. As for his color, he seems to be a chocolate colored kitty but who knows if it stays that way. We’ve had him for 2.5 weeks now and it’s some real slow socialization progression but he’s really made some strides in the past two days and demands snugs now (even though he forgets who I am the minute I put him down lmao).
Here’s hoping we don’t end up with a fourth cat lmao
Update: we are completely medically cleared!!! Ringworm has healed, no more intestinal parasites and we are FIV/FeLV negative. Woodley had his second vet appointment yesterday and got the all clear and his booster vaccines. Now we can really focus on finding him a loving home!
Woodley got to meet our cat Fletcher today who is cat dad extraordinaire and he also posed for a mini photo shoot
A handsome bébé
Please enjoy some recent photos of Woodley who I think is going to be an enormous cat lmao. His personality has really started to shine and he’s just such a sweet and playful kitten. Also his fur is growing longer! He is becoming a fluffy man! We are in danger of having a fourth cat at this point!!

‘’ She stood on the end of the dock, pale and goosefleshed and shivering in the fog. In her hand, Needle seemed to whisper to her. Stick them with the pointy end, it said, and, don’t tell Sansa! Mikken’s mark was on the blade.
It’s just a sword. If she needed a sword, there were a hundred under the temple. Needle was too small to be a proper sword, it was hardly more than a toy. She’d been a stupid little girl when Jon had it made for her. “It’s just a sword,” she said, aloud this time …
… but it wasn’t.
Needle was Robb and Bran and Rickon, her mother and her father, even Sansa. Needle was Winterfell’s grey walls, and the laughter of its people. Needle was the summer snows, Old Nan’s stories, the heart tree with its red leaves and scary face, the warm earthy smell of the glass gardens, the sound of the north wind rattling the shutters of her room. Needle was Jon Snow’s smile.
He used to mess my hair and call me “little sister,” she remembered, and suddenly there were tears in her eyes.’‘

I know it’s a sesame street clip but seriously, who is the target audience for this?
Parents watching it with their kids, I guess?
literally everyone
Everyone. No, really… everyone.
For adults, the appeal is Sir Patrick Stewart doing a kid’s educational bit in full Shakespearean dress and style; there’s a delightful cognitive dissonance between the very serious presentation and the very simple content.
For very small children, it’s educational: this is the letter “B”; here’s how it’s shaped; here’s some words you know that start with it. Oh, and here’s a word you may not be familiar with that starts with it, so you can recognize that it’s the sound that matters, and not whatever other connection you made between the other two words.
For older kids: you’ve probably heard that “to be or not to be?” speech, or at least part of it, so you can enjoy some of the parody the adults are watching. Also, here’s how to describe how a letter is made - how to teach young siblings who don’t read yet, how to explain both the shape and the sound.
For kids with dyslexia: here’s how you differentiate a “B” from a P or D or E. You may have to go slowly and look carefully at the exact shapes that make up the whole, but there are differences and you can learn to recognize them.
For teens or young college students: In addition to whichever parts of those are relevant to you, here’s what Shakespearean acting sounds like. Here’s how to enunciate clearly and slowly, so your audience can understand terms they may not recognize and still follow the gist of what you’re saying. If you’re reading Shakespeare in school, try sounding it out like this and see if that helps it make sense.
For new RenFaire workers: Here’s how to pronounce “zounds.”
One of the most glorious things in the world is Shakespearean actors doing stuff like this.
If begineth even be a word
