We made a thing.
Tennessee Williams, The Glass Menagerie
The only good thing about Halloween is the candy.. | Event 2 | Kaius & Shale |
Shale was invisible to him, he stared past her, as if she were made of glass. But when she touched him, Kaius finally responded. He slapped her hand away. Taken aback, Shale retreated a few steps back. What was wrong with him? Waves of fear were rolling off him, his eyes huge and just staring at the girl. Kaius crouched down and buried his head in his arms. âI.. I donât want to turn you into that thing tooâŠâ she heard him mutter, his voice cracking. Thing? What thing? The murmurings of the girl reminded Shale of her presence. That thing? Kaius obviously knew her, and her presence obviously tormented him.
As Kaius stayed frozen in place, Shale went to have a closer look at the girl. ââŠWho are you?â she whispered, as the girl continued to mutter nothings at nobody in particular. Shale tapped her on the shoulder. She was cold to the touch, and there was no response. Was what the girl became because of Kaius? She remembered that Apollo children could healâŠbut this was no where near healing. She realised she didnât really know Kaius that much at all, actually. She looked through the book again, trying to get something out of the words, when Kaius spoke again.
âJust stay away from meâŠâ his voice was strained, like he was battling a war in his head. Shale sighed, she was having none of that âleave me aloneâ shit. Crouching down in front of her friend, Shale took a deep breath and spoke softly to him. âKaiusâŠKaius, donât tell me to stay away because thatâs the last thing I will do. I want to help you, and if youâre not going to tell me whatâs going on, I canât, ok. I have no idea whatâs happening, who that girl is, what you did in the past, but well, Iâm ok, arenât I? Whatever you did, or are afraid you did to me, it didnât happen.â Shale gestured to herself. âI know you said that being alone is ok, but no, it isnât ok all the time. Look, Iâm here with you now, arenât I? Iâm here for a reason, and thatâs to help you, but I canât do that unless you look up and tell me whatâs going on.â She ended firmly, hoping fervently that he would answer. The only way to save him from the agony that he seemed to be going through was to get him to open up. She held the book in front of her. âFirst off, what were you reading in here. Why were you speaking in Greek?â
Kaius shook his head to himself as Shale began to speak to him. Help. Did he even deserve the help? He just kept silent as she continued to talk, Sora's voice often overpowering hers, hearing bits and pieces. 'I'm here with you' 'help you' 'tell me what's going on' "I killed her, okay?!" He finally looked up to her and snapped, "That's what's going on. I killed my best friend. How am I suppose to use my powers and heal when I just kill? I don't want to use my powers at all! I-" Kaius stopped himself and contained it all, it was fear that his power built in him, he hate it, but he's mostly scared of it. He glanced to Shale once more, not sure how she'd react, this isn't a usual human reaction he could predict and all more that came from his mouth was, "..I'm sorry. I'm just.." Scared. it''d be a good word to use right now. He never let his hands go, gripping so tightly as he hugged his own arms, he could feel the nails digging into his skin. And yet, it comforted him, just a little, that if he held tight enough, Sora's voice won't drive him insane. If he held tight enough, he won't let it happen again.

The only good thing about Halloween is the candy.. | Event 2 | Kaius & Shale |
31st October, Shaleâs favourite time of the year. Costumes, parties, going for haunted houses? Worth every minute spent waiting for Halloween to happen. Back at home, they used to celebrate Halloween every year without fail. It was a family thing. Shale was afraid Halloween wouldnât be a Half Blood Institute thing, but when the lecturers presented the class with cat ears (adorned with bells, to boot), Shale laughed at her silliness and put them on straight away.
After grabbing some snacks, Shale flitted around and chatted with random people, kinda missing having a quieter Halloween, just a little. It was cool having so many people around for a change, the atmosphere was buzzing. As she turned from her second round of grapefruit punch (which was supposed to resemble blood, apparently) she spotted a tall figure extricate himself from the sea of people and proceed to lean on a far wall. Oho! Was that her mopey buddy she saw? Pouring a second cup of punch, she weaved her way towards him. âHeyy.â she gave him a bump on the shoulder. He hastily pulled off his cat ears and patted his hair into place. Shale laughed, he never failed to amuse her. âToo many people for you, huh?â she quipped and took a seat on the floor beside him, offering him the cup of punch. Just as she was about to put her own cup on the floor, everything went dark.
The room erupted into chaos, screams and shouts rang in her ears. Shale shot up, abandoning her cup of punch and stuck to Kaius. Having a friend when shit went down was always a good idea. The darkness went on for a while and when it finally faded, Shale found herself in aâŠlibrary? She looked around, confused. Shelves upon shelves of tomes surrounded them, seemingly whispering knowledge to them. Shale caught sight of Kaius, almost hidden behind a shelf. She started towards him, but stopped mid-step when she saw that he was totally absorbed in his own world, running his hands along the spines of the books.Â
Shale watched silently as Kaius pulled a book out and flipped to a page so instantaneously, Â as if he spent his life memorising the exact location of that page. She saw him press him palm into the page and then he finally spoke, but not to her. Kaius started reciting something, in Greek. She never knew he spoke Greek! As Shale stood there listening to him murmuring the words, he suddenly looked up, his eyes wide and he flung the book aside, as if it were on fire. He glanced at her and backed up against a shelf.
Felling a wisp of air at her side, Shale turned to see a petite girl with long dark hair materialise out of thin air. The girl was staring into the distance, murmuring softly to herself. Taken aback, Shale turned to Kaius for help, but he was staring at that girl, as if Shale was invisible. Shale was confused, but Kiaus, Kaius looked like he was in pain. He was pulling on his hair as he stared , unblinking at the newcomer. His eyebrows were furrowed as he just..stood there, looking as if his worst nightmare had just come true. Any happiness that Shale had accumulated from the party evaporated.
"âŠKaius? Whatâs going on? Who is she?" Receiving no answer, Shale tentatively walked over to the book that Kaius had abandoned on the floor and picked it up from a frayed corner. The book was worn out, as if it had been passed through generation after generation. The page that Kaius was on contained a simple poem about finding happiness in life. She scanned through the poem, tried to figure out what made him throw it aside, but wait, he was reading it in Greek. Translating perhaps? But still, what would make him throw the book away so suddenly when it was such a harmless poem? More confused than ever, Shale decided get her friend out of that shocked trance that he was in. Standing in front of him, she lay her hand gently on his arm and gave it a shake. "Kaius. Whatâs wrong."Â
Kaius continued to watch his old friend get swallowed up by useless words until Shale blocked his view. But it was as if he stared right past her. It was only when she touched his arm did he look at her. His eyes widen and he slapped her hand away, "No, don't touch me!" He wanted to back away some more but he couldn't. So he just crouched down, as far away as possible from her, burying his face and hugging his knees. No, he didn't want to see her turn into.. that. He didn't even want to hear it. Even from a distance, her murmurs of no meanings continued to crawl into his ears, filling up his mind. He always wanted to hear Sora's voice again, but not this one. "I.. I don't want to turn you into that thing too..." His voice, cracked and muffled, shaking his head subtly.
The soft mutters seem to grow louder in his head, pounding inside to give him a horrible headache. He should never use his powers, never ever ever, not even in class. Remember that one time he asked Isobel if he could try using his powers if she ever got sick? What was he even thinking? He isn't meant to use these powers at all, like a kid that got the wrong Christmas present and have no clue on what to do with it now; you can't use it, but you can't throw it away either. He didn't know was going on, and he couldn't think straight. He needed to, but he couldn't. He couldn't even remember what was happening before, all that's in his mind is her wordless mutters and distinct whispers that float by, 'It's all your fault.'
"Just.." He finally spoke again, not looking up to her. He let out a shaky breath as he continued, "Just stay away from me..." He shouldn't be here, it just brings his powers all back. They say that Apollo kids all had good powers to heal. Bullshit.
So ... hi, everyone..
Fair enough. Yeah, actually, I am. My dad is Apollo.
Ah, that's nice to know. I'm an, um.. Apollo kid too. Not exactly the best example of one but.. kinda still am one I guess.
So ... hi, everyone..
Iâm sure itâs not intentional. Sometimes, people canât just control their powers or they get angry and things happen. But if it was out of frustration that something happened, you canât really blame them. [She shrugged, playing with the edge of her sleeve.] Everyone handles things differently.
Yeah.. Oh i know all about... um, not controlling. -Kaius sighed and let it go, sooner or later she'll see the pranks people do pull off with their powers.- True, and that is quite fascinating isn't it? -He stopped himself before he let himself babble on.- I mean.. so uh, are you a demi-god too?
So ... hi, everyone..
Itâs interesting, so far. I havenât seen much yet, Iâve only just gotten settled, but ⊠[Cadence shrugged, looking around.] I like it.Â
Oh you'll love it here, just maybe... uh, stay clear of some of the... -he lowered his voice, not entirely sure she knew or not- demigod tricks. I mean, well, people are nice and all but often things go south when the powers kick in too hard..Â
So ... hi, everyone..
Yeah, I am, actually. Iâm Cadence.
-Kaius managed a small smile,- Kaius.. Nice to see a new face around here.. -He waved slightly before shoving his hands back into his pockets.- Um... So, how's settling in this place? It can get kinda weird sometimes...
So ... hi, everyone..
O-oh.. um, hi... Are you new? Haven't uh, seen you around before..

The only good thing about Halloween is the candy.. | Event 2 | Kaius & Shale |
It's that time of the year again. Where everything that could go wrong, will go wrong. Kaius didn't really acknowledge the holiday as much as some but somehow their Psychology Lecturer threw cat ears at them and made them wear it with him. There was no harm in that... it was just.. embarrassing. And then after the lecture he made the class go to the party for the good ol class bonding time. ...Really? Kaius felt like it was just a ruse to make his class of cats come and take a photo for best class costume, or some psychology test he's putting them through.
After mingling around for a bit, Kaius retreated to the walls, with a bar of chocolate in his hands, spending the time watching others instead. It was a nice kind of solitude for the day, people were certainly enjoying themselves, that's for sure. He then notice someone coming up to his side, giving off a very strong, cheerful presence. Turning his head only confirmed his suspicion on who it was, "Hey.. don't laugh at me!" Kaius hastily pulled the cat ears off, readjusting his hair again. He didn't say it but it was nice to have someone he knew around, it was getting more and more uncomfortable being in a room filled with so many people.Â
And as if he wish was his command, everything went dark. Both of them didn't get to say much more when everyone seem to be experiencing the same thing, making a ruckus out of it. The noises slowly faded and when the darkness finally seeped away, he found himself in a library. One that held so much Medical Theory and Literature it was hard to clear it all. A library he knew so well, and hurt so much to know. Kaius closed his eyes and shook his head, hesitantly walking up to the familiar shelves and touching the books. It... can't be real, right? He hasn't been here for ages. And yet, it looked like nothing changed. He almost didn't notice that Shale was there right beside him. He watched his hand pick up one book, without much thought, almost knowing what it was as it slabbed itself with Greek poems. Flipping the pages, he went to that exact page. That exact poem. And he didn't know why he couldn't stop it. He fingers touched the worn out paper as he heard himself recite it out in Greek. Only halfway through did he mange to will himself into throwing the book aside. He backed away from the book, feeling his back touch the shelf and turned to see Shale. No, no no no, he did not just read that out to her. He did not. He couldn't have. he vowed never to touch his powers ever again. And it was like he couldn't talk, couldn't speak, couldn't apologise to her. But.. she seemed.. fine. Right..? And right before his eyes, within a blink, she appeared, standing right beside Shale. Blank eyed, staring into nothing, quieting murmuring to herself in gibberish. Kaius' lips quivered, a hand pulling at his hair, hoping that pain wouldn't overcome the current one while he just stared. He couldn't move, he didn't want to move.Â
Emi squealed a little when the dog nuzzled into her hand, but a small, genuine smile started to grow on her lips. As she saw him stepping forward, she slightly shoved the dog in his direction. âo what are we going to do then? I canât possibly keep him; even if he was really stray.â
Kaius smiled as it gently greeted her and slowly brought his hand in front of the little dog, probably still a puppy. He turned his head away, almost closing his eyes as if not wanting to look, ready to pull by back his hand any time. He peeked back to her when he notice the dog being shoved towards him, "Y-you aren't looking at me... are you? Uh.." Dogs weren't that hard to take care of, but it still seems like a really really bad idea... but if someone wanted to take it up they would've a long time ago... but sending it to the pound just doesn't seem right, I heard that they kill animals when they run out of space... but... He continued to let himself argue over the idea of the dog.
Humanities buddies? :'D //Shale & Kaius
Unlike Kaius, Shale wasnât even trying to pretend to pay attention. Class was extremely boring and disturbing Kaius was much more entertaining. She could read up back in her room. âHoho! Was that a smile I saw? Wasnât that hard now, was it?â She tilted her head knowingly. âHanging out with me will leave you no chance to be mopey and lonely, I assure you!â Shale did a thumbs up and grinned.
"Excruciating," Kaius shook his head slightly, chuckling before he glanced sideways. His mind has been trying to focus so badly on class, even though he already knew everything he was teaching, and he never really did pay attention, but this seem a bit too much as for any respect for the lecturer. But then again... quietly not paying attention wasn't giving the lecturer much respect either. He rested his chin on his palm as he retorted, "Oh yeah? Hanging out with me will leave you always mopey and lonely, I assure you 101%."
I-I canât have medicine. Like any type of medicineâIâmâumâallergic to them. [she nodded to herself, telling herself that was a good enough reason] But if youâre a child of Apollo, you shouldnât need medicine, right?
Oh... Oh. Okay um, sorry I didn't know that.. ..Really? Any type at all? -Kaius stopped himself from asking more and coughed- Yeah, sure. No medicine. -Kaius smiled to himself and brought a finger up as if she got it- That's the problem. If I was a good child of Apollo..
Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country
âThe human mind and soul are so complex; feelings, gut feels, follow your heart, love. Itâs so intriguing, yet so stupid at the same time.â
What have you done?
Name: Kaius Hughe Age: Nineteen Species: Demigod, Son of Apollo Occupation: Freshman Alliance: Neutral Major/Minor: Medicine/Psychology-Sociology Clubs: Book and Astronomy Sports: N/A Face Claim: Nicholas Hoult
Is this what you wanted?
His virtues are being rational, protective and vocal, but he needs to work on being less worrywart, pessimist and vulnerable.
What have you become?Â
Kaius, to simply put into words, is just the guy that knows his stuff - a quiet little walking encyclopedia. He spent his life just doing what he was told to do, toping classes as if it was as simple as stuffing cake in your mouth (not that itâs simple he just liked the idea of cake), and staying out of trouble. He just floats by his early years, seeing the world as it is;Â The sun is just there to give us warmth and light, the rain was precipitation, flowers bloom to reproduce, people smile due to the sensory neurons from the eyes transferring the nerve impulses to the brain, deciding to send nerve impulses to the motor neurons to move the muscles for smiling, and tears were just produced by the tear glands in the eye to keep the eyes moist. Why should feeling come into place with all this scientific explanation to give reason? But that was just how his mind worked. He goes by logic and rationality. No logic, no solution.
Medicine came to him naturally and he enrolled into medical school, fitting in quite well. And by fitting in he meant blending in. No comments, no conflict, just stay off the radar and heâll be fine. But there was this one girl in his class who just kept pestering him; asking him whatâs his favourite food, favourite thing to do, favourite colour. Why? Kaius constantly asks himself. Why bother talking to him and not be like everyone else, ignore his existence as a whole? Even teachers donât really care if he was present in class or not, with his kind of grades, it didnât really matter. Every time a test comes back her grades were always the lowest. Her name was Sora. It used to just be plain annoying when she continued to try and converse with him. But soon the annoyance disappeared and they had almost conversations sometimes. How and why did it happen? Kaius had no answer to that. He just shook it off as a reason of that he pitied her, trying her best to get to know him without any luck. Pitied. The human mind was so complicated.Â
Kaius started to open up to Sora, it was almost impossible not to. He started to talk more than he had in three years. Why would his brain give in to her and let his mouth talk? He just canât comprehend any of his actions. Worst so was that he actually⊠enjoyed talking. Sora was more of the artsy fartsy kind of girl, she enjoys book and poems and little stories that tickle your heart. He never understood them but plays along to join her in reading just to make her happier here. Then theyâll argue over whether Romeo and Juliet is romantic or logically stupid.
Kaius was in his senior years already, skipping ahead while his only friend lagged behind badly, when one day Sora brought in an old dusty book of poetry. He thought she was crazy when he saw the book in Greek and then she thought he was crazy. But she insisted because âhe had a nice reading voiceâ. And who knew, that a couple of words could destroy someone. Just like that. He was the one that drove her mad, like she couldnât stop mumbling in rhyming words. He basically took her life away. That incident made him lock himself up until his mother told him the truth.
He thought he was normal, he liked being normal. What he learnt to be was not logical and he hated that. But then again, neither were humans. He couldnât trust himself to continue medicine and heal when he had already destroyed and so he was brought over to this institute. To maybe somehow built trust in others, and in himself once again. Because at this moment? A son of Apollo? He was a disgrace.
You're walking alone from heaven to hell
Thea Brooks: They were once course mates back in Medical School and often project partners as well, and when he thought he left everything he knew back home, guess one followed him closely after.
Harrison Carpenter: Half brothers they were, but yet being total opposites, they seem to find the means to live with each other as roommates. It may not seem like it but Kaius does enjoy his brotherâs company. Sometimes.
