An Aquaman Review: From the perspective of the modern cephalopod.
(Full disclosure #1: I have very little to no background knowledge of Aquaman, and as it is around 9:30 pm, I am not up to my usual research standards to fill in some gaps of people’s histories and names and so forth.)
(Full disclosure #2: The last time this cephalopod wrote a critique of a movie or book was when she was in college, a looooong time ago.)
As a marine invertebrate, I am always pleased when there is marine representation in mainstream media. Today I went to see Aquaman with my cephalopod niece and nephew and their immediate family. Here are some of my thoughts regarding the film.
1. The characterization of land dwelling organisms, particularly humans:
In general, the humanoid citizens of Atlantis have a negative view of land dwellers. They bring up some very valid points, regarding the pollution, littering, and wholesale destruction of marine habitats. As a long time marine resident among land dwellers, I can fully see their point, but I also appreciate that an attempt was made to show that the average land dweller is not an evil corporate criminal up to no good, they are just average beings trying to make the best of their surroundings.
2. Equal representation of marine organisms:
Here, for the most part, the film failed this cephalopod’s expectations. I suppose I should not be surprised at the abundance of representation of both bony and cartilaginous fish, and the larger of the marine mammals. I did appreciate that there was both shark and ray representation, as well as both toothed and baleen whales.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that crustaceans were well represented, and this pleased me greatly. As far as other marine invertebrates, however, the movie falls very short. Beyond the overabundance of bioluminescent jellies, and jelly-like water ships, as well as the aforementioned crustaceans, there really were no other obvious invertebrate characters highlighted within the film.
As the discerning octopus that I am, I did notice the (INCREDIBLY AWESOME AND TALENTED) octopus drummer prior to the arena battle, the squid using ink as a diversionary tactic during the large end battle, and the appearance of tentacles on the base of the dais where the King’s Trident was kept.
3. Film Conflict
There were several different conflicts that centered around Aquaman: 1. Aquaman’s dismissal of Atlantis after learning that they sent his mother off to her death, and his resulting reluctance to assist the Atlantians during the war. 2. The pirate who Aquaman created into an enemy when he refused to save the pirate’s father 3. The conflict with Aquaman’s half brother who is determined to see war between the Atlantians and the land dwellers.
4.Characterization and Growth:
I appreciate that most of the romantic interest stuff was kept to Aquaman’s parents, I had held out some hope that the film wouldn’t make the princess into a romantic interest, but I do appreciate that it was in no way a major story line, and simply hinted at, which I greatly appreciate. I also appreciate that the princess was more than capable of caring for herself! (Author’s note: I need a new word for appreciate) The film also gave both characters moments to grow, so the princess could see the beauty of the land dwellers and their children, and Aquaman realized that he was responsible for the creation of one of his enemies.
5. Final Thoughts:
In general, the film could have been a little shorter. As beautiful as the computer animation was, we probably didn’t need all of the sweeping pans of marine landscape. (did I really just say that?) Admittedly, I am most CERTAINLY biased, and fully recognize that my next critique is based strongly in that bias: invertebrates in general were under-represented and under used. The jellies that were present were basically used only as lights, and did not seem to make any use of the stinging cells on their tentacles as a potential weapon.
There were absolutely no gastropods to be found, at least that I could see, and there are some pretty awesome gastropods in the ocean that could have been used. Also there was no coral, sponge, or sea star representation, at least that this octopus remembers. The few cephalopod references were minimal and sadly many opportunities were lost here. Cephalopods are known for their intelligence, amazing ability to camouflage themselves, as well as the incredible strength of their arms and suckers. None of these traits were explored, which, in this not so humble cephalopod’s opinion, is a shame.
Despite my general invertebrate gripes, I enjoyed the film and recommend it for viewing.
I hope you have found this review to be informative, or, at the very least, entertaining. Please feel free to share your thoughts below!
Why are all of these things so difficult?
for some reason i want a story prompt to be
“…Cheese?”
IF ANYONE ASKED him why he was raiding the Bunker’s refrigerator at three in the morning, Castiel decided, he was going to blame it on Dean. Technically, it wasn’t Dean’s fault, but technically Castiel didn’t need to eat. Yet here he was, bent down to see the interior of the refrigerator because he was absolutely ravenous. And since Dean had been the one to make the rather insidious comment about Castiel and Sam working up an appetite during the night, clearly the fact that his depleating his Grace reinforcing the new wards was Dean’s fault.
It was also undoubtedly Dean’s fault that the contents of the Bunker refrigerator seemed to consist almost entirely of beer, a plastic bag with a single hamburger bun, and half a block of yellow cheese. There had almost certainly been more on the grocery list when Dean had gone off “leaving you two nerds to your study date”, but without Sam along to ensure things like fresh fruits and vegetables were purchased, Dean must have defaulted to his currently preferred sustinence.
The overhead light turned on, and Castiel blinked. He had not heard the footsteps of someone approaching, and with his Grace currently so low he could not immediately identify his newly arrived companion without lifting his head. The dilemma quickly became moot as Sam’s voice spoke up from behind him. “Cas?”
“It is all Dean’s fault,” the angel blurted out, lifting his head anyway to give Sam his most earnest expression.
“Dean’s…” Sam looked puzzled for a moment, then surprised and chagrined as he realized to what Castiel was referring. “You know he didn’t mean a literal appetite…”
“I am aware that he was making a sexual innuendo regarding our late night expenditure of energy and effort,” Castiel confirmed, grimacing. He would not have minded engaging in such activities with the younger Winchester if Sam had ever asked, but the man remained stubbornly silent about his desires. “Nonetheless….”
“Nonetheless,” Sam agreed. He shook his head and sighed. “Well, what’s he left us with to make our midnight lunch?”
Castiel winced. “…Cheese?”
“Cheese,” Sam repeated.
“And beer,” Castiel added. He heard the sound of flesh slapping against flesh and looked up sharply, but it seemed to have been Sam striking his forehead with his palm rather than any cause for true alarm.
“Well, come on then,” Sam said with a heavy sigh. “Let’s go see if there’s a Denny’s in Lebanon.”
“As you wish.”
This is so wholesome
Update: he finally got the cat to the vet to see if she had a microchip

In the midst of all these “Humans will packbond with anything” posts, I’m going to pause and give you some actual, real-world career advice
Ready? Humans are packbondy creatures. I mean, there’s just no arguing it. They packbond readily, and quickly, and unbelievably strongly. Once a human has packbonded with a thing, they will do anything to help and protect that thing.
There’s a downside to that, not often mentioned. It uses up a lot of their time and energy to build those packbonds, maintain those packbonds, and most especially to do the work of helping and protecting those with whom they have packbonded. It doesn’t leave them a lot of time and energy for helping other beings. If you want a human to help you – if you want to reliably get their best effort – you have to packbond with them first. “Yeah? So?” So you’re probably going to be working with humans for most, if not all, of your career. No matter how good or bad you are at your job, there will come a time when you need someone else in your workspace to help you with something, whether that’s manning the fry station for 2 minutes while you pee, sending over those numbers from marketing, or dropping everything to teach you how to do a thing that your boss told you to do or else you’d be fired. Not to mention the big things. They don’t give promotions to just their friends – at least not so much any more. Promotions go to the people who’ve completed big, visible, important projects. It seems fair until you consider,,,, who gets the big, important, visible projects assigned to them in the first place? Humans give boosts to the people they’ve packbonded with. They mention packbondee’s accomplishments to the boss (or the boss’ boss). They cover for the mistakes of people they’ve packbonded with.
“That’s not right! It shouldn’t be a popularity contest! It should be about who does the best –” Listen to me. Listen.
You may be right. You may be the most correct creature to have ever spoken since the beginning of galactic civilization. It does not matter Humans packbond. It’s what they do. I can’t stop it. You can’t stop it. No power in the ‘verse can stop it. This is how the human do. All you can do is work with it. If you want a human to help you – if you want to reliably get their best effort – you have to packbond with them first. “Look, I’m introverted and scared of people and I have social anxiety so I really don’t know how to –” Hey, my pal, I feel you. I, too, am introverted. And I have social anxiety. And I have PTSD that actually – and I recognize that this is bizarre – has ‘business networking’ as a trigger. For you, I have good news: Humans will packbond with anything. Like, you don’t really actually have to do anything. You kinda just have to… exist. In their presence. They kinda do the rest. If you can talk with them, that speeds things up. But it doesn’t have to be, like, good conversation. Like, it can totally go You: boy, sure is hot out! Human: Man oh man, can you believe it? You: Wow, yeah Human: Totally You: …. Human: ….
This conversation – as awkward and uncomfortable as it felt to you, has caused this human to packbond with you a little more. If you repeat it weekly, you will get good results.
THE TAKEAWAYS
You need to packbond with the humans you come in contact with
Taking time to do that is not only justifiable, it is an important part of your job, and should be treated as such
That is to say that, as much as you hate it (and believe me, I understand), you have to take time away from actual work and dedicate it to packbonding with your fellow workers
Tips
Plan out your packbonding time. It’s easier if you can initiate than if a human springs packbonding-time on you all unexpected. In an office job I like to use Friday afternoon, but adjust according to what makes sense to you and your situation.
Keep some packbonding-time questions handy. My go-to list is:
(If it’s Monday or Tuesday) How was your weekend?
(If it’s Wednesday) How’s your week been so far?
(If it’s Thursday or Friday) Any big plans for the weekend?
How’s your day been?
You don’t have to care about the answers to these questions. All you have to do is remember that if the human is answering questions, they are not asking you any questions. Therefore questions are your friend. If you ask follow-up questions, you may be able to get through the entire packbonding time without having to do any of the talking
Learn to disengage from packbonding. You can use basically the same sentence (or variants on it), but you’ll want to practice it so that you can make it sound natural. I use “Awesome! Well, I gotta get going. Have a good one!”
I know it feels overwhelming, but a few minutes of packbonding, once a week, is all you need. Once you build it into your habits it can be no more annoying than doing dishes or showering.
So we’re just not gonna talk about how OP is an alien anthropologist investigating the human species before infiltrating huh

Get yourself un-shadowbanned That post seems to be going around a bit but not the reblog on how to fix it, so here’s another
Go to postlimit, put in your blog name, TAKE A SCREENSHOT
Go to tumblr support and file a support ticket. Category: Blog incorrectly marked explicit. Details: posts hidden from search results. Attach the screenshot. Do this even if you’ve already filed a support ticket N days ago without a screenshot. Make sure the relevant blog is chosen and you have the right contact email address.
They got back to me within an hour.
Seriously - follow this. I was shadow-banned, and they fixed it within seconds.
Not an exaggeration - I got the “we received your ticket” and “we’ve fixed it” e-mail in the same minute.
ok I filled this support form out TWICE without hearing back from staff for weeks, but literally the second i sent the form with the screenshot the problem was resolved - there is clearly some sort of bot checking for attachments so this is a genuinely good solution if you’ve been shadowbanned
@authoressskr and all the others suffering from this
@calamitychaos and @mrsgabrieltrickster if you guys are still interested in salvaging your blogs this might help
This may be why my request finally got fixed because I sent an attachment with my request!!

Sam: Come on Rey, we have one final left and then it’s winter break!
Rey: No Sam. I can’t go on. Leave me, I’ll hold you back, they’ll catch up with you. You have to escape for the greater good!
Sam: …*sigh* I’m going to regret this. Who, exactly, will catch up with me?
Rey: The nightmares of finals past.
Sam: *rolls eyes and picks Rey up* Come on, lazy bones, let’s go, no more of this “I can’t go on crap!”
Rey: *struggles halfheartedly* No! Don’t sacrifice yourself for me!!!! Leave me here! Go on without me!!!
Sam: *tucks Rey under arm like a football* You just want Kathy to make you another one of those pecan pie coffees.
Rey: *sags in defeat* You got me.
Sam: Look, we go to this final, and then we’ll go in and double team Kathy for the coffee, okay?
Rey: *perks up* I knew there was a reason I liked you, Sam Winchester!!
Sam: *mutters* yea, lucky me….
Oh…this…this got away from me a little…
Once I figure out the middle parts of my book I’ll be unstoppable! Just you wait!
