The most recent dance concert I photographed just this Wednesday. I've been photographing for Kate Corby & Dancers for the last four years, so it was really a pleasure working with her again. Kate's choreography is a good challenge for me. The dancers' next movement, entrance or exit, lighting design, or mood of the piece is nearly always unpredictable, which requires me to be highly sensitive to these changes so I can control the image I'm taking artistically and technically. It’s important for people of privilege to speak up for people who are marginalized. In this case, it’s really important for men not to remain silent about issues related to gender-based violence.
Take a stand. Say something.
This is important for everyone, we all need to be looking at how our language and behavior reinforces rape culture. Rape jokes, dismissing rape or sexual assault, and not taking consent seriously, are never okay for any of us to do. Anyone can be raped, it can happen to any of us so we need to all be working to end it. It disproportionately happens to women, QUILTBAG+ individuals, people in the military, sex workers, and young people and it’s important that we address the cultural issues that cause this like sexism and gender roles, heterosexism, monosexism, cissexism, and cultural attitudes about sex and sex workers.
