Resident Evil 7: Lucas Baker analysis
Lucas, albeit an asshole, is what I think one of the best “deep” characters in the RE7 game. I’m no clinical psychiatrist, but it doesn’t take a genius to make a guess that he has antisocial personality disorder—-something which is usually formed by either childhood trauma(Oliver) or biology. I believe the reason Lucas makes traps is because it’s how he connects with people: he can’t form proper relationships, and so he uses this to not only form a relationship with someone(such as Clancy), but he does it to feel in his own version of control. To feel powerful. When your bullied, you feel weak, and sometimes, we as people will do awful things to feel in control. I don’t believe he’s a hard character to empathize with. ‘But he killed his childhood bully!’ You say. Everyone—yes everyone, has felt such rage against being harassed or bullied, they wanted to harm them, but never did. As a child, Lucas was naturally unstable: however, I believe that the reason marguerite took him to the doctor wasn’t just because of his mental health issues: it was his incredible intelligence. We later note that Lucas got a 100-200 piece puzzle set after the doctor appointment. I don’t know about you, but most kids at that age don’t prefer playing with huge puzzles like that. Lucas makes elaborate puzzles because it helps him connect with people. Whether you believe it or not, he’s lonely. In his contests, notice how he got 2nd and 3rd place trophies—-he never won. The L in loser doesn’t really stand for his victims. His name starts with an L, and so does what he calls Clancy: a loser. Loser also stands for Lucas.
