It's been two amazing years of Sherlock & Co, and I've had some fun writing fic for it. Mostly during the wonderful Flash Bangs @sandcobangevent organized by @eardefenders!!! Thought I would put some links to the stories here and the Bangs so folks can go read all the great fic about our ridiculous, beloved trio.

Looking for Love - John is searching for something, or rather someone, to love, and Sherlock is worried. With a little help from their flatmate Mariana, they find that love was there right in front of them all the time. (Sherlock/John, some angst, happy ending) - with a delightful illustration by gurpyman

All in the Family - Sherlock has been injured during a case and John thinks it is his fault. To stay by his side he pretends to be his husband, which is very interesting once Sherlock's actual brother shows up! (Sherlock/John, angst, happy ending) - with an illustration by Alastor of Sherlock's elusive sibling.

nasa is using a 3D world graphic for the solar eclipse thingy today where germany is still devided in east and west adjfglkafdhgadfg. buddies, it's been almost 40 years.

So I showed this to a physicist and they were like "Oh! Yes! It's a figure from Fred Espenak's very old paper where he did a bunch of eclipse graphics! I've been looking at these my entire internet life, basically, for every solar eclipse! They called him Mr. Eclipse. He just passed away recently 🥺"

Anyway apparently Mr. Eclipse made 5000 years' worth of solar eclipse graphics, which you can find the simpler versions of here

So now instead of laughing at NASA for their outdated graphics I'm emotional about Mr. Eclipse and his hard work

Following Shakespeare’s death in 1616, four women were crucial in ensuring his original work was not forgotten: the Shakespeare Ladies Club. Formed in 1736, the club was a quartet of “Women of Quality”—three from the aristocracy and one a writer who ran a stationery shop, all educated and so enraptured by Shakespeare’s plays that they met to read and discuss his transcendent genius....

....They had to overcome a post-Puritan culture that believed theatre to be immoral and no place for respectable women.

Their first successful bespeaking—or pressurising—of the playhouses to put on more Shakespeare was a performance of Othello at Drury Lane on 16  December 1736. It was such a success that an anonymous admirer praised the Ladies’ efforts in the 20 December 1736 issue of The Daily Journal, along with a shout-out for the positive social role of thespians:

"A NOBLE Attempt to revive the Stage, by a club of Women of the first Quality and Fashion is now going forward: Would the Men of Fashion form a Club to extirpate Entertainments, the Shakespear Club (for so the Ladies have dignified) would find a noble Association there; and a Union of both, in all Probability, might restore the Stage, and make the Professions of an actor as valuable in publick Opinion as it is really in itself."

One of the best ones I saw was a thing noting that every single one of the few survivors of suicide jumps off of the Golden Gate Bridge realized, on the way down, that the problems they were killing themselves over actually were fixable or could be worked through...except for the now - extremely unfixable - problem of gravity.

Went to the Holocaust Museum in DC once. There was a video interview of an Auschwitz survivor who said he and some other prisoners stayed up all night with a man who wanted to kill himself. The man didn’t kill himself and survived to liberation.

In the video the survivor said “Never seek a permanent solution to a temporary problem. And they’re all temporary problems.”

Hearing that from a guy who survived the Holocaust rewired my brain a little bit.

I think something a lot of people don't understand is that depression is not suicidality, and suicidality is not depression. People can, and are, depressed without being suicidal, and sometimes suicidality peaks as people are emerging from depression. Suicidality is a wave, and the trick is to allow that wave to crest and subside WITHOUT acting on it. Whatever it takes to ride it out. For some people that's distraction, like watching television. For others it's calling a friend -- not to talk about the suicidality, but just to talk. For others it could be as simple as going to sit in a coffee shop or library, because the presence of other people is a huge diminisher of suicide risk. That's what suicide safety planning is about. It's like having any other type of emergency plan, like a plan for fire or evacuation. It's making a plan when you are in the frame of mind to do so, so that you can just DO the plan without having to think about it when the occasion arises. When you're in the midst of suicidal ideation, or even intent, you're not in a problem-solving mood. So knowing past!you, with the help of a therapist hopefully, came up with the plan and all you have to do is follow up until the wave crests and subsides, is what allows you to see another day.

There’s a really compassionate and well-written paper/book/thing called Suicide: The Forever Decision that’s written specifically for people who are currently suicidal. The letter to the reader at the beginning is wonderful and deeply understands how to talk to someone who’s suicidal without preaching or talking down to them.

It’s very honest. It’s very clear. It’s very kind. It presents you with a lot of information and a lot of understanding and lets you take it all in like the autonomous human you are, and make decisions from an informed place. It goes over the reality of suicide attempts, pain involved, likelihoods of survival, after effects of attempts, and how to get help if you want it after reading all of that and learning about the reality of suicide attempts.

No one can ever stop you if you’re really determined. Only you can stop yourself. If you’re suicidal and there’s ANY tiny part of you that wants a chance to not go down that route, but can’t convince the rest of you yet, give this short book a try. The Golden Girls, S2E5: “Isn't It Romantic”

I came up with this three-way table to help me (and now you, if you want) to rate things out of 5 stars. I was thinking of books and films when I made it, but you can probably use it for other stuff.

The idea is that you rate the thing on how much stuff you loved and how much stuff you hated, and those things weight against each other. There's only one way to get 5 stars or 1 star, so those should end up as the rarest ratings, wtih 3 stars being the most common.

'Spicy' means that the thing inspires emotion, whether positive or negative, while 'bland' means it doesn't affect you much either way.

An example of a 3-star (spicy) - for me personally - would be the Twilight series, because there's plenty of garbage in there but also some things that are like crack to me. I can't think of an example of a 3 star (bland) because by nature they don't stick in the mind.

(This also assumes giving 0 stars isn't allowed. That'd throw it out of whack...)
