Finished watching Kuroko no Basket a bit ago and wanted to redesign some of the characters. It’s a really good anime and part of me feels like if it had better character design, it could’ve been more memorable today. Similar to how Haikyuu is.
It started with Akashi bc I felt his design didn’t well convey his royal themes. I know how similar he is to Kuroko is meant to reference how in a previous draft, they were meant to be brothers but I feel the final antagonist of a story should be visually striking. Moreover, if it wasn’t for his smug look, you wouldn’t get the tragic wealthy heir vibe at all so his design fails to communicate his most important feature. To ease into the transition, I like to imagine he keeps his og hair in middle school and starts slicking it back in highschool.
Then the redesign fever infected the rest of Rakuzan bc I was dissatisfied with how, despite their narrative importance, the Uncrowned Kings’ had kinda bland designs. There’s a lot of untapped fun there.
Then I redid all the team jerseys cause I felt Kajo got majorly snubbed. And then I hallucinated better designs and a backstory for Team Jabberwock. And then-
Yeah, really it’s not objectively better maybe but I had fun adding things and making up some headcannons.
Hope you enjoy!
Basketball bad boys, anyone?
Yeah, so these are my Kirisaki Daiichi redesigns. The uncrowned kings and their respective squads have all the fun potential and I intend to use it.
Kirisaki Daiichi and Hanamiya being the most slept on team for character design of them all because you can’t make a canonical “bad boy” team and not have them be emo, goth, and punk for the funsies. For the visual “pen egg chest qua” (je ne sais quoi). For the fun, stereotypical edgelord flair we all deserve to indulge in every now and then.
Makoto’s og design simply didn’t scream spider enough for me and I was tired of so many key characters having this longish, same shade of black hair (him, Himuro, Mibuchi, etc). Like, I know giving the black and brown a colored tint can subtract from the uniqueness of the GOM, but not even a little? So, yeah, fuck allat, I’m using desaturated colors every now and then.
I also loved drawing Makoto in some casual clothes and much needed drip. Villains are required to serve most. I wanted to draw the rest of them in some casual outfits because trust Kojiro and honestly all of them dress immaculately but life and time restraints. Maybe later.
Story wise, each player and Makoto maybe have their own reasons for turning to hurting others through basketball and I hope you catch some of the story threads I threw in. Whether or not they deserve or have the capacity to change is entirely up to you all with Makoto having the most potential to be entirely complex or cartoonishly evil (I like both). I’m a sucker for a bit of character complexity and things that leave room for interpretation.
Sometimes knb can be very black and white in its themes…
Well, let me know what you all think! Thank you, for everyone’s kind words and support. See ya!
The moment you’ve all been waiting for…
MY CURRENT GENERATION OF MIRACLES REDESIGNS! IN THE FORM OF A GOOFY COMIC!
Let’s discuss my changes…
Kuroko: The “kuro” part of his name means black. Get it? Cause he’s a shadow. Despite this, there wasn’t a drop black in sight within his design and I felt his entire theme could be better reinforced if there was some. So I made his eyes super stare-into-your-soul dark and some ombré. Maybe it would be more meaningful if his hair was black but he dyed it blue? Maybe to show he wasn’t really innately gifted like the rest of the GOM?
Kise: Models are an excuse to make the prettiest boys. His glasses form a C & V shape cause control C, control V — lmao I’m so clever. The idea is he wears different color glasses throughout the series and the color of the GOM he copies is their color for that ep. Or maybe the lenses flash the color of the GOM he chooses to copy. Why is he wearing accessories on court? Anime.
Midorima: His moles on his face form the Cancer constellation. Takao would notice and trace it 💖. With sharpie 💖.
Murasakibara: Lazy shark boy idk. He sounds like a surfer in the dub and it adds more variety. Maybe it’ll change.
Part 1/2
To explain the comic!
I'm in love with the idea of Kagami giving Kuroko his spare key and Kuroko and the GOM just taking every opportunity to be in his house for no reason.
My brain is so dead rn cause I rushed this art cause my unruly ass should be STUDYING.
But it's so funny trust me please. The vision.
Kagami gets home from a hard day and it's just Kuroko and Kise having a messy divorce in his living room with Midorima as prosecution vs Aomine as defense, Akashi as the eerie judge, Atsushi as the very obvious murderer, and Momoi as the jury.
Like it's so bad, Kuroko and co does hooliganism in Kagami's house without bro being invited half the time.
And - soft pause. While Kagami openly protests as he starts seeing Kuroko and stupid (Aomine) and stupid (Momoi) and stupid (Midorima) and stupid (Kise) and stupid (Atsushi) and slightly less stupid (Akashi) in his house more often than not.
He secretly finds comfort in coming home to someone again. And not just an empty space.
He gave Kuroko the key to kinda express in his emotionally stunted way that Kuroko is always welcome and thought of and not completely invisible. He complains but he doesn't actually regret it. They adore each other. THE END.
Parts 1 & 2 together
i'm glad you were happy with the ask! i think akashi is very interesting and he surely has a lot of trauma, and that could be why i never shipped him with anyone. and really couldn't see him with furihata (but i do want to know more about why some like them together so much). i think the closest i had was midorima and that's because akashi actually seemed to respect him. i don't actually ship too many characters because their friendships are so interesting, especially the gom, but you're definitely right about kise and kasamatsu. though aomine and kise were kinda my favourite. funnily enough i really disliked aomine when i first watched the series, but now i literally lose my mind when i see him
yes absolutely!! the circle of people i talk about knb with is exactly three so you've now made it four SKNDKNKNDL it's very exciting for me genuinely
my best friend is an akashi Stan, so i've done a lot of character examination for him (he's like one of her fave characters of all time from Anything so we talk ab him a lot) and i totally agree with you!! i think he's really rooted in his arc, which is really intense and interesting (i don't think i've ever seen a sports anime do anything with mental illness like they did with akashi besides maybe like. free.), and it's almost a disservice to make that arc about anything else. i also don't think there's anyone who specifically complements him in a way that would like actually logically work romantically. for ME though like obviously anyone else can do what they want but idk i never... read him that way bc i was so busy reading into his character development on its own. so i never really naturally gravitated towards a ship for him. (but like i said i only have like. five ships total. four really if we come down to it.) i totally agree in that midorima seems like a logical jump in that they are the closest, but even then i don't see anything in that for midorima (i could do a whole essay on midorima but anyway) so idk not for me per say but yes i totally get where you're coming from!!
(i think rachel will heed the call and hopefully info dump in the replies of one of these asks about akafuri so keep coming back to see the takes of a TRUE akafuri stan)
i agree! a lot of the dynamics on the show hold up best as friendships imho, and while you're certainly able to read into them as romantic if you want to, it's just as easy (and perhaps better) to make it a story about friendship and i think that - especially for people like me, as someone single whose friends are really important to her - is a great story to tell too. the gom is the perfect example - they're friends from the start in a way, but the friendship changes and grows with them as the series goes on. they're not the same people in the beginning and their friendship, while just as strong if not stronger, isn't the same either and it's such a cool story to see told. so yes you get me exactly!!
oh don't get me started on kikasa i will literally never stop <3<3<3<3 i love them more than words can say those are my guys. i will spare you from the ramble but yes they def crack my top four. aomine and kise i was pretty anti on until i started my recent rewatch and like. still not for me but i def get it and respect it. i had no idea where it was coming from and now im like oh shit yeah i see it for sure.
i had a very similar experience with aomine and i think it's kind of hard not to bc i know my friends who watched the show did as well LKNDKNFKLNF like he showed up and i was like "this guy's all bark and no fuckin bite stan kuroko this guy sucks" and then over time we learned his backstory and eventually i was in love with that bitch. i am still in love with that bitch. he rearranged my brain cells. is he dumb? yeah. is he a bitch? yeah. is he my dumb bitch? yeah.
anyway sorry for this long as hell answer but! you've awakened the brain worms sorry to say <3
Hello, tis me, the akafuri shipping mutual aghsjd I've been shipping them since 2016: celebrating their ship day (4/12 btw), creating playlists, reading fanfic, writing my own fanfics, I even made a PowerPoint all about them for fun, so i am highly qualified to talk about them from a shipping perspective.
First thing to know, I'm pretty sure for most akafuri shippers this started as a crack ship. And i do agree that at first glance this ship comes from no where. That people wanted to write an ensemble cast fic and threw them together for shits and giggles. The first time I came across them was in this manner.
Naturally I thought to myself, "why?? why would someone ship this?!" At the time I was 16 years old fresh from finishing the anime and I was confused why someone would ship them especially since I only knew broad and insensitive impressions of their characters: psychopath and coward. I thought that Akashi was simply too complex and dangerous to be shipped, and Furihata was a mob character at best.
So, I googled this exact question, "why do you ship Akashi and Furihata", the answer was a blog post basically amounting to "they are cute and funny." Believe me or not, that indepth answer didn't really sell me on them. However, I am a firm advocate that you must read a ship's fanfiction before you judge it and through this I learned multiple things about akafuri:
Authors can write as many different versions of akashi and furihata as they like
These different portrayals create various dynamics
And because of this, akafuri is one of the most flexible ships I've ever come across
Now before I continue, we must address something. One person's interpretation of a character or a ship is as valid as another's. We don't shame or yuck anybodies yum, so while reading anything past this point we will keep this in mind even as I express my own personal opinions. Okay? Cool.
Let's talk about the characters independently.
Akashi. Saying Akashi is complex doesn't do him enough justice. It doesn't mention anything about his upbringing, his deceased mother, his strict father, the ungodly expectations placed upon him, or his DID. It doesn't mention the distinctions between the 2 main hosts (henceforth dubbed Oreshi (the core) and Bokushi (the protector)). Or their relationship with each other. An author has the right to write Akashi any way they would like; only Oreshi, only Bokushi, after they became one in Last Game, or some combination of both. As is the nature of fandom, characters get hit with the fandom stick and gain highly inaccurate fanon versions (in the worse case sadistic psychopath Bokushi). This itself creates 6 different versions of Akashi who will interact differently with the different versions of Furihata.
Furihata for his part as i mentioned above sometimes gets reduced to a stuttering coward. But with some deeper analysis you can see that he is a romantic (joined a sport for a girl), he is observant (at least half of the time during a match it will be Furihata who notices something off and will narrate what we are supposed to be seeing as well, and if it's not him telling us he has still noticed and had a reaction before Riko or someone else says it), he is thoughtful- he is careful (being put in the Seirin vs Kaijo match to slow down the pace), he is brave despite being scared (stepping on the court to guard against Akashi), he is passionate (declaring that he wants to play with Kagami and Kuroko on the court), he's fun and diligent (participating in the off court tournament), and he's just a guy. A dude if you will. As normal as one could be. (Sorry I love him and I'm used to thinking about him with complete adoration from writing my wip from Akashi's POV)
Great now that you have an idea of what I mean by different portrayals of Akashi and Furihata let's discuss the main two dynamics of Akafuri!
There is the crack ship- The Lion and The Chihuahua. This was The Ship Dynamic for them when the ship first spawned, you will find many fanarts and fanfictions using this motif of Akashi being a lion and Furihata being a chihuahua. This dynamic focuses mostly on the characterization that Akashi is controlling, serious, and lustful while Furihata is a cute stuttering boy toy. Of course this is a generalization, the dynamic can be cute, funny, hot, and sometimes fics of this dynamic float into the second (and superior) dynamic.
The Newlyweds dynamic named such because they disgust everyone around them with their love. In this both of their characterization deepens and they become equals, partners, best friends, and yes, lovers. More often than not it is in this dynamic that Akashi's "complexities" get the care they deserve and Furihata is an actual functioning person with the occasional bi-panic (who can blame him though). The name of the game is slowburn because there are alot of steps for them to become friends let alone something more.
So, now let's go over how they compliment each other and bring out the best of each other (which is what has made them my OTP for 6+ years).
Akashi is used to being held at a distance and being on a pedestal. His classmates view him as a Prince. His father's expectations have warped his perception of his teammates until he believed that the only way to keep his new found family together is to keep winning. While Kuroko and Seirin "woke him up" it takes a long time to break out of that thinking when it's the only way you've been thinking for years, and the GOM can only do so much since they are wrapped along with his trauma. Furihata is just a guy and that's what Akashi needs. He needs some safe stable ground to process everything and that's what Furihata offers. Akashi admired his bravery during their match and he chose to sit by him at Kuroko's birthday (he doesn't not like him, if anything they are strangers or a friends acquaintance. If he really didn't like him he would have just let Furihata be scared in his presence and ignored him. He does not dislike him nor is he indifferent to him.) In many fanfics from this scene they slowly become friends noticing each other's thoughtfulness and kindness. Their friendship is about respect, second chances, open-ness, and genuinity.
As for their romantic relationship, think Beauty and The Beast. It's their friendship, the warmth and safety they feel around each other. The kin ship of being strategists. How they inspire each other to grow and be better: for Akashi its learning to be more emotionally mature and for Furihata its about learning confidence. It's the fact that Furihata wants love and once attended Akashi has a well spring of it. Here are some more thoughts about them (1) (2) (3)
That's kinda it besides the general "they are cute!" I mean, i could explain to you how I relate to Akashi's crushing expectations, how I look to him for self confidence, how him finding love with Furihata mimics what I've longed for and dreamed of - a best friend, a partner that shows me a new world of possibilities - for myself. I could tell you about how I want to be like Furihata: how he treats others, and is brave despite everything. But that's all very personal, buy me dinner first goddamn agshjsshhs
I hope this helped explain some reasons why akafuri is appealing. I'll leave you with some links incase you are still curious:
- my akafuri PowerPoint (much of what I've said is already on here) but there are many fanfic recs that I thought were suitable to introduce the ship to someone
- my akafuri spotify playlist
- and because I am a narcissistic bastard who is not ashamed to self-promote, here is my ancient greek! Akafuri wip
And most importantly! Remember how I said, don't judge a ship unless you've read some of their fic? This is the fic I recommend for anyone wanting to explore Akafuri:
A Spark of Light series by @courtingstars. It has some of the best characterizations of Furihata and Akashi, it's canon complaint, the writing is beautiful, it's extremely detailed and researched, it's the slowest of slowburns, and even though it's not complete and this is the longest hiatus the author has done, it's still considered The Bible for Akafuri shippers. It's a masterpiece, a testament of love, and persistence. If there is one thing to take from this long-winded post: read A Spark of Light and see for yourself what akafuri has to offer.

I loved loved loved the new chapter! Can I ask some of your reasoning for the girls being/seeming better - at basketball, friendship, and life in general - than the boys? Not that I disagree, I just love thought process.
I feel this answer boils down to that 99% of girls are way better trained to socialize and be Actual Humans than boys are, but there’s a bit of how it’s painfully obvious from reading KnB that Fujimaki has never actually had six friends at once? (Kuroko-Aomine-Momoi-Kise, Akashi-Kuroko-Midorima-Murasakibara, Hyuuga-Kiyoshi-Riko-Izuki, all these come to mind) His idea of showing up for a gathering is ‘a girl makes the calls and I show up where she tells me’. ‘Sometimes I don’t even talk to my friend who sits next to me in class for like a week, that’s just how it is’.
So my mental image of the Miragen and how I portray them is already much more dynamic and social than canon is. They know where the rest of them LIVE. Some of them have even VISITED. They SPOKE IN CLASS. And when it comes to Miracles, the girls have banded together even tighter out of sheer necessity. Aomine calls Midorima’s mom ‘aunty’. She learned to roll her skirts up from Kise. Kise copied homework off Murasakibara and Midorima, without shame. Midorima got insulated from social ostracism from being with the people like them, the ones who could really, truly not care right from the start. There are a thousand tiny ways girls look out for each other, because no one else is going to.
Midorima climbs into the chair with Aomine because they are both freaked out and also, like hell she is sitting on the floor with all those boys. But Aomine lets her. Because she’s upset too.
Actually the one person who does majorly opt-out of most of These Things to the same extent as her guy counterpart is Murasakibara, and… she pays for it in ways that he never will. She’s a little more lonely and a lot more angry, a freak even among freaks. Maybe Aka-chin and her will never be friends the same way again, not ever.
But they will never not have been friends.
During the match in the chapter, the girls are definitely a) playing dirty (a little) and b) playing to win. The boys were phoning it in over and over again in their manga matches. They hold back moves, they don’t control the play, they insist on playing the way they want to even when the game is against them. The girls, of course, also did this! They only gave in and started giving it their all after Kuroko and Seirin beat them. It would literally be one thing if they were talented but uncoordinated rookies at team/tournament play, like Kagami is, or if they’d spent a lot of time being the only aces in their teams, expected to be able to carry a whole match by themselves. They are not! They had years of being a tightly-knit, dynamic, highly experienced match-winning machine. They know what the rest of them can do intimately, and they’re shown over and over again to be able to predict each other’s playing style. They can play together in order to win. But in the streetball game, the girls buckled down and did it faster and better than the boys did. Because they’ve always had to, because being choosy is for people who have options to choose from.
I think to the life in general point, I don’t think the boys are incapable of taking care of themselves, or getting things done, or establishing a certain amount of mental/emotional security and self-identity. They’ve just never had to in the same way. Guy Aomine has never made plans for himself in his life. I highly doubt he’s ever done his own damn laundry. Girl Aomine is actually working on a six-year life plan. She is Going Places. Guy Akashi has to deal with the constant miasma of pressure to be Perfect. Girl Akashi has to deal with that, the fact that if she’s too perfect, it’s not ‘ladylike’, and the reality that even Perfection is not perfection when you are a girl. Guy Kuroko has always been kind of closed-off and finds it difficult to express himself emotionally. Girl Kuroko finds it difficult to express emotionally the well of untapped fury that drove her to keep on playing, even when her seniors and her coach said it was probably better to quit.
And so on, and so forth.

i read the book years ago, but it's still very funny to me that one method genghis khan used in controlling his empire was to marry his daughters off as queens to vassal states and then go, "now since you're my son-in-law, you have to fight in my battles for me" and just put his son-in-law in a place to for SURE get killed, thus leaving his daughter as the ruler of her new land.

I think I dislike ‘fuck canon fanon rulez’ takes because time after time I see how boring and predictable fanon is and how often it reinforces racism and misogyny etc. in ways canon never did
and I think having to work around canon and with canon to make something new usually ends up pushing people to make something weirder and cooler
i've usually been in fandoms where the series (or movie, whatever media) has been over for a while, but my current fandom is still ongoing. i'm nervous about writing fanfic for this fandom, since the canon isn't "solid" yet. good characters could turn out terrible, scenes can change entire perceptions and perspectives, stuff like that makes me nervous about writing fic. i don't want to villainize a character that turns out to get a redemption arc, i don't want to write a ship fic about a ship i might end up hating later. idk if i'm explaining this right. essentially, writing fic about a fandom with an ongoing canon makes me nervous, but i want to write for this fandom. what do i do?
Remember that posting a work to AO3 comes with a built in date stamp. It'll be clear to anyone reading the story a year from now or two years from now that you wrote it at a certain point in canon.
If you enjoy writing canon compliant fics, you can even add a tag like "post-ep for s02e04" or "missing moment from s01e12" or whatever it might be. You could provide that content in an author's note or your summary instead, if you prefer.
A lot of fic is written while canon is still up in the air and people are used to things changing. If you write for a ship you end up hating, you can always delete the fic later or orphan it if you want folks to still have access to it but remove your own name. You can villainize a character in one story and proclaim them heroic in another. Unless you put your work into a series, there's no need for every story you write to follow on from each other. Each one can be an independent world all on its own.
And that raises another point: write AUs. You don't have to stick to canon compliant works if that stresses you out. An AU can be as simple as "everything is the same, but these characters met before canon started" and as complex as "these people are now aliens living on a different planet".
Will there be people who point out canon inconsistencies when they read your fic years later? Sure. It's happened to me. But at the same time, they were reading my fic years later. That's a compliment in and of itself.
What do the rest of you think? Have you had to deal with these worries before? How did you manage it?
A fandom I'm in that lasted a decade ended in 2020, I wasn't there from the very start but around season 3 and onward. It's recently has found a resurgence of sorts. (as in a year after it came to an end I saw the decline in gifs, posts, content and then out of nowhere all these reblogs and likes are happening to my posts from like 2015! It's amazing!)
I personally have had the roller coaster ride with TV shows because I know they're at the mercy of whoever's making them and how great shows get axed and leave us with cliff hangers and it sometimes feels so disheartening to even enter a show, even if I'm sure I'll love it, because of the fear of being given an untold story. But I've been learning to embrace what there is...and that's only made me love and appreciate fanfic even more. Somewhere on ao3 someone will take it upon themselves to finish a version of an untold story. Or share a story that canon doesn't have time to tell anymore. I won't got into a complete tangent but tv show seasons used to be 22-24 episodes! Filler episodes were allowed without feeling like a waste of time to allow characters to breathe and react to all the insane shit that's been happening! Episodes going down to like 10ish if we're lucky leaves no room for the much needed breathing room...and that's where fanfics are becoming so much more important to me.
To have something that acknowledges the trauma of an event, the consequences of actions, long and short term, giving us insight on how other characters react to decisions or to give us reunions and all the things that canon doesn't have time for!
Back to my original point about the resurge in fandom. I've been rereading some old faves. And bc of the time stamp I remember what was going on that season, and it felt like going through an old photo album. How specific certain worries were to the main characters, the biggest threats, the biggest delights that canon gave us. It's very fun to see fics from way back when, and even new fans or old fans who have been reignited with desire to come back and write again, write specific season fics and then because of stuff that happened in canon that we didn't like have the canon divergence tag pointing out from which season and episode.
AO3 also has the "Not X Character Friendly" tag you can add, and edit at any time should canon change. Sometimes people get very upset with that character and would like to read fics with this tag. Other times people will love a character and would use this tag to filter out fics that aren't kind. This tag is there for those who want it and don't want it. Author notes are also very helpful.
To me, as a reader and a writer, writing fics of ongoing fandom is a lot like living history that once canon is finished, can be like an archeology site! At one point, that was just the way of life for both readers and writers.
