Wildfires in northern Ontario force First Nations to flee

Several wildfires are forcing members of a number of First Nations to flee their homes in northern Ontario.

“I had time to run home and pack a bag and get to the beach where the boats were waiting,” said a member of Namaygoosisagagun First Nation (Collins). “We literally had minutes to get on the boats and flee before it took our town. “Once we left my house finally after packing what I could in a pack sack, the fire was right behind our place. We had to run to the beach and once we got there, it was only moments before the fire had jumped over the (train) track and was coming for us.”

ok i watched project hail mary and it was. Okay. i enjoyed it as a surface level piece of entertainment and thought it was well made especially the practical effects, but i did have some qualms (maybe bc i never bothered to read the book due to weird shit andy weir said). but now i’m actually absorbing the fanart i see everywhere and why is rocky Always a guy. is it ever actually established that rocky is a male rock alien. like is there a scene in the book that was cut from the film where rocky’s gender is established. yet! grace gives him a masculine-coded name and low voice in his translator thing. but i don’t see people really analyzing that as a part of grace’s character that he might default to masculinizing a being he cannot tell the gender of, if eridians even have a concept of gender remotely similar to human ones or at all. but i guess it would be too much of an “agenda” to actually have a meaningful conversation abt this topic in text. and for fandom to have that conversation it would require fandom to stop assuming maleness as default/neuter. but of course the status quo, the choice without an “agenda” if you’re Apolitical Andy over here, is that maleness is neutral amd anything else is Noticeable. for a fucking rock alien

lowkey andy weir die by my blade i have so much beef with that guy. he wants to make Uplifting Stories about Humanity Being Good with No Political Opinions Expressed!!!!!! and then phm and the martian (which i did actually read) are just. White Man Alone! What Will Happen To Him???? which is fine again it can be an entertaining story! it was! but of fucking course a white man is your default regular guy protagonist. anything else would be too “political.” of course i can count on my hands the amount of dialogue people of colour had in that movie. the project is lead by a white european lady whose job is never even fucking explained but world governments defer to her??? and are just. okay with white american teacher man being in all their meetings???? but it’s okay one of the astronauts (who died) was chinese. there’s one scene where it shows a black woman in one of the top secret meetings, who had one line. there’s even carl! a black man who is not given all that much depth or screen time and is a big tall stoic buff bodyguard who helps out Whiteboy Protagonist a bit. Okay!! Sure!! make a story about collaboration across cultures and nationalities and then try to make it apolitical and inevitably the only characters the story encourages you to actually give a shit about are the white ones from imperial core nations. anything else would be too much of an agenda. and we just want feel-good stories here!! my god!!! why can’t we have a feel-good story where the women are minor characters and the ppl of colour die and the genderless rock alien is automatically a boy and isn’t the white man such a good kind brave unlikely hero and isn’t it cool how the white man gets to represent all of earth and humanity to the eridians and it’s all just the same fucking tired old sci-fi tropes! i enjoy star trek but dont even fucking get me started on the politics of star trek lmao
