why have i seen so many people call norwegian wood misogynistic and horny? ive only read four chapters but so far, the women are definitely manic pixie dream girl esque but i kinda feel like that's realistically how men in japan view them, and he's writing from the perspective of a college student in 70s japan. i also think the main character sees everyone, men and women, a little bit like this, like fleeting personalities that pass him by as if they are drifting away with the wind and he is an unmoving rock. i don't mind spoilers (like, oh watanabe did such and such) as long as they don't spoil the entire plot. so, thoughts? :)

new thoughts on this one — i totally get why people are saying that, lol. free naoko. i don't think it takes away from the book though. spoilers ahead

i think the thing about toru is that you never truly understand what effects him, for the most part you just see what happens to him and get to experience what he does as yourself. i think if naoko didn't have sex with him in the woods outside ami i'd feel more... comfortable? but as i say that, i think, 'it's probably meant to be unsettling,' at least a little. and female sexuality is rarely explored. i feel like her late night exhibitionism and then acting as if nothing happened is like. very real? it's like the pit of her soul needed to be exposed but she can't clash with what she knows to be herself. so i think it's done well for the most part. i still haven't finished the book so i'll continue updating as i read but i do understand the misogynist claims a lot more now lol

initial thoughts: IVAN Wiege

firstly, i'm devastated, but that's to be expected... gah!!!!!!!!

the thing that gets me is the contrast between the cover and the original. take hyuluka's wiege – it's just as devastating, but in a different way

during hyuluka's song, their voices completely mesh with the instrumental, both of them creating a cacophony of like. beautiful, child-like music, like springtime and flowers and merry-go-rounds, because they're reminiscing on their past so passionately and with such fervor that their passion and fervor translates to the bittersweet happiness of the music. the alternate universes depicted in wiege were a result of their beautiful emotions :') (imo)

ivan's voice feels almost drowned out by the instrumental. like he didn't even get a chance to feel that childhood happiness (which we know is true, cos of nowhere and literally everything else about him) and when i listened i was like god!!!! My baby😞😞😞..,,

he seems to be slightly unable to keep up with the fervor of the middle of the song because he's also been like. TRAINED! TO DO ANYTHING HE'S TOLD! and this song is so spur of the moment, rambunctious, it's like he doesn't know how to do something he wasn't specifically told to do. which makes his fucking Dying for till just that significant but i'm sure if you're reading this you get the point

i still think his cover was beautiful, and its definitely better that he didnt sing just like hyuluka, because it emphasizes his character (as can be said about all the alnst covers.) park byeong hoon also just has such a lovely voice Waaahhhh WAAAHHHH
