Otto Lana writes for a newsletter for direct support professionals about why our communication tools are so important to our lives.
A robust communication system has put me in the driver’s seat of my world. Everyone deserves to be the driving force in their life, regardless of disability or oral fluency. Presumed competence and self-determination should not be radical concepts. Dignity is foundational to human existence. DSPs are in a unique role to support all these things by learning to communicate and establishing a professional relationship with the person supported. Communication is integral and imperative to a dignified life. Rely on the person’s communication to drive your support.
It’s so weird to me when people don’t take self assessing levels and support needs labels for autism super seriously…
I was told by some folks I talked to that I seemed to have mid needs in general for a fairly long time before I started identifying as MSN or even higher LSN-MSN. I’m fairly certain I’m partly or fully level 2, but I don’t like to talk about it a super lot because I take it very seriously and put a lot of consideration into it.
And I see people sometimes just say they must be level 2 (this especially happens with level 2, not sure why) or HrSN, just because they aren’t a genius, or because they homeschool, or because they struggle with daily living at all.
Feels like they don’t understand enough to take it seriously. That they don’t understand how significant autism can be. They don’t understand that severely/profoundly autistic folks can be unable to tolerate even the smallest sudden change, like a new picture on the wall. They don’t understand that folks with moderate and severe autism can be constantly under-accommodated, or have no accommodations that can allow us to fully function. Or how deep and constant our struggles can be, with the “smallest” things.
do you care about severely disabled people who are disabled due to mental illness, intellectual disability, and developmental disability. do you care about people with low adaptive functioning? do you care about disabled people who are visibly disabled without any aids, for the way they talk, walk, act? do you care about disabled people who need 24h care? about disabled people who need almost anything to be explained to them simply? about disabled people who can't and might never understand things you take for granted? do you care about disabled people who are missing from society - who are locked up at home with family or away in institutions? do any of you actually give a shit about pw mental health conditions and ID/DD and include them in your activism?
I love when people say that using a wheelchair must save me from the exhaustion of walking. And it does to an extent, but it still makes me exhausted as well.
Using a wheelchair isn’t a one size fits all. Like yeah, some people use it for fatigue and it helps them a lot, but I use a wheelchair because I literally have too and I can’t really walk well anymore.
Wheelchair doesnt equal not being exhausted for a lot of people. Even for power wheelchair people, it can still be very exhausting.
or pain
great that some use wheelchair because pain & wheelchair get rid of most their pain but that not true for all wheelchair users
specifically for me my wheelchair cause me pain. it custom to my body n it cause me pain. as full time user if use wheelchair outside for half day be in very bad pain n fatigue. granted it not fully meet my advanced seating positioning needs but doubt that even if it does it will ever stop give me pain.
at this point im near convinced that bro age 20 was in the public library having extensive talks with doc scratch. yeah just fuck his whole shit up

im fucking crying.
what was up with that old man
he had tea parties by himself with dolls. he let his granddaughter play with loaded guns. he would ride around on his dog's back as a boy. he taxidermied the dog when it died. he taxidermied his granddaughter when she died (unrelated to the playing with guns). he had a portal to another universe chilling in his attic which he left unprotected and in the hands of a teenager while he went on vacation. he shot butterflies for fun.
he was american 😭
What are you talking about in both timelines he was on a random island in the pacific he wasnt american or british😭😭
jake harley's meteor landed in the united states outside of colonel sassacre's house, which is where he was raised by the condesce before he ran away 13 years later. we know it landed in the US because jade's meteor destroyed this factory in the US, and unless i'm wildly misremembering, the kids' meteors land in the same place that their ancestors' meteors did. so, since he was "born" in the US and grew up there, i think it's safe to say he's american
jake english's meteor also landed in the U.S. but i wouldn't say he's american because his grandmother brought him to the island at such a young age (most likely the same age jade was when she was brought to the island)
i like this comic a normal amount i swear
there was a meteor that hit that location millions of years before humanity existed. it didn't create the island but it created the crater where the lake(?) and temple are. you can see it in WV: Ascend
okay if this comment was on a stealth homestuck post i would understand. but this post??? i think we all know it's homestuck. it's a regular homestuck post that's being interacted with by homestuck fans. fork found in kitchen
i actually didn't know wtf this was about but now that i do... well, just give my regards to andrei cause im gone-charov
I think Davekat's first kiss should go like this
i loooove unreliable narration i love when a character says something in confidence and we find out later that they were just like. fucking wrong. case in point dave understanding “my bro is rich” and “my bro makes weird puppet porn” and extrapolating “my bro got rich off weird puppet porn” leading to him calling smuppetry a “multi billion dollar enterprise” because he is thirteen even though WE know that bro was set up with a trust fund by jade’s grandpa and was implied to have worked for skaianet like the puppets are just his freakazoid hobby but it’s funny to have dave be FIRMLY convinced his brother is a billionaire due to puppet porn
