Hey so Joseph Zada is Aboriginal Australian, from his fathers side. In Australia, it’s considered pretty disrespectful to call Aboriginal Australians white based on their appearance because of the history of the stolen generations.

genuinely thank you so much for pointing this out, I haven’t seen anyone else mention it! I’m indigenous too (NA, not australian) which is why I care sm about this casting. I’m thrilled to hear a mixed kid was actually cast. I just quickly looked up his dad like your tags suggested and found these quotes from him and Joesph’s aunt(?) that happen to reference the colourism my feelings on the seam’s casting stem from (way better than a gif can lol)

had I realized his background I would’ve clarified my emphasis on this (even for white-passing indigenous folks) rather than race alone instead of just my silly gif post. trust me I’m the last person who wants to invalidate someone based on blood quantum bs, pft I’m practically a mutt myself. so—very thankful for your correction! if you happen to know of better language for identity/colourism nuances with respect to aboriginal australians, I’d love to hear

y'all have to understand that book canon and film canon are sometimes different. for ppl who watch the movies, it wouldnt make sense to have dark skinned with gray eyes 16 year old haymitch and blonde white blue eyed haymitch at 40.

wait i didn't meant it in a condescending or mean way tho 😭 i completely understand what u meant but i also saw some ppl genuinely mad that they didn't cast book accurate haymitch and that's why i said what i said. it's obvious (given their casting history) that they're gonna stick with movie continuity—which is why i also think that 60% of the book is gonna be cut because that's the way they've been working so far

i do think there is merit to the anger against their lack of progress in casting but you’re also totally right that this was basically inevitable—they sooo do not have a strong track record there😭

(also i wholeheartedly agree with your prediction of them cutting out a lot !! ironically, i think the reaping scene in particular will be very different, i just can’t see hollywood getting behind it as is)
