I’m definitely not unique in this and I’ll probably come to my senses and delete this later but there’s something about clinging so desperately to a culture you’re not sure you can claim.

Especially if you’ve only ever had one label and the other is left buried somewhere overseas. One parent becomes your only evidence. You learn to keep one half and neglect the other until it becomes less a half and more a quarter. Then a tiny sliver you’ve forgotten all about. You become more comfortable saying one label than the other because one warrants an explanation. It becomes a fun fact at most.

And then much later you go overseas and you’re reminded of that dusty sliver. And you’re not entirely sure if it means anything anymore. It’s just blood and DNA. That alone cannot possibly connect you.

You never learned the language, never grew up there. You look like an “other” but there’s facets of you that are buried beneath unfamiliar skin. But the skin is the first thing they see so you’re standing with your family and they’re speaking too fast for you to understand in your limited capacity of what you’ve tried to learn.
