Happy migraine and headache awareness month. This may seem like a minor terminology nitpick, but it’s a serious misconception about migraine: nausea is an actual migraine symptom, not a thing that happens because of the headache. When people with migraine experience nausea during attacks, it’s not because the pain is so bad (the idea that migraine is always excruciatingly painful is also a myth), it’s because migraine causes a lot of symptoms that aren’t pain, including nausea.

This goes for other symptoms as well: although pain can definitely contribute to people’s experiences of these symptoms, fatigue and brain fog are actual migraine symptoms, not just pain symptoms.

This is also your friendly PSA that nausea is not a normal tension headache symptom, if you frequently get nauseous with your headaches, you almost certainly have migraine.

It’s the night before Deltarune: Chapter 5, and I want to write my completely batshit theory and put it down somewhere before it drops.

So, to start. I think Dess is 100% dead, and yet I also think Dess is the Knight. I think that using the deepest darkness of the Shelter, Carol Holiday somehow made that “specific darkness” to create a Darkner in the likeness of her dead daughter. Dess’s guitar had the Shelter code, it could have been a place of great importance to her to create that specificness that Ralsei mentioned. 

We also know that Shadow Crystals can be crafted into things, thanks to Seam, and strangely enough, the shadow crystal we get from chipping the Knight’s blade keeps a lot of its Dark World properties even when in the Light World. Perhaps, crafting something from the Shadow Crystals allows for a Darkner to persist even in the light, and in other Dark Worlds. Maybe you could even say it could grant the Darkner that wields or wears this item freedom. 

Okay, so play along with the theory for a moment. Let’s pretend I’m somehow right and The Knight is Darkner!Dess, what then? Why would she be doing all the weird shit that the Knight does? 

So far, everyone marches to the beat of the prophecy. To quote; "THE KNIGHT WHICH MAKES WITH BLACKENED KNIFE. SHALL DUEL WITH HEROES STRIFE BY STRIFE." She must. She took on the role of the Knight, she must work to bring about the Roaring. It is a terrible and inescapable fate.

So Darkner!Dess is doom-driven by prophecy but what of the others in the, affectionately named, Conspiracy Squad? I can’t imagine Carol or Asgore actually wanting to cause untold death and destruction. Carol is a severe and controlling woman but I can’t imagine she’s also happy with the idea of the Roaring happening. What’s the point of finding out the truth of Dess’s death and/or disappearance if she’s also rooting for everything to end? 

Quite simply, I think the Conspiracy Squad is against the Roaring and are completely focused on separate things to work against the Knight’s efforts to bring about the end times.

Carol is the leader, she’s the one keeping an eye on the Knight’s movements and arranging things behind the scenes to, with my theory, fully return Dess to the light. Perhaps the “police sacrifice” is to grant Dess a Lightner soul? Asgore is looking into what actually happened, how Dess was killed and perhaps even where it happened. If it wasn’t for the inkling that Asgore is going to be the one to create the fountain for Chapter 5, I’d say he might not even have been told about it all. But, I think he knows. I think creating the fountain is his next step after exhausting all he can in the light world. And Kris? Kris is a Hero of the Prophecy. The Cage with Human Parts. The one who’s SOUL can banish Darkness. They are Carol’s sword and shield, someone capable of standing up to, and defeating the Knight but shackled by the promise. Someone who can close fountains, banish Titans and struggle against the enclosure bars of the damned prophecy.

And what about us, The SOUL or the Player? The Voice that connected to us had prepared a vessel and another voice redirected us. Was it Carol? Dess? That I have nothing for, but I think it was the first step anyone had taken in trying to subvert the prophecy. 

So yeah, that’s my insane “no proof all vibes” theory.

TL;DR - > Dess is dead and Carol (or someone) revived her as a Darkner using the Shelter’s darkness. > They’re using Shadow Crystals in an attempt to stabilize Darkner!Dess’s form > As she fulfills the role of the Knight in the prophecy, Darkner!Dess is working towards the Roaring > Carol is using Asgore to find out what actually happened and is manipulating Kris into handling the Knight non lethally while still working against the Roaring > Carol might be sacrificing Undyne in hopes that granting Darkner!Dess a Soul will essentially revive her. > No one involved with the conspiracy wants the Roaring to happen but it’s foretold so everyone is chafing against fate.

I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new characters— is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?”
