More: Halloween originates from the ancient Celtic holiday Samhain (pronounced sow-win) — the most important holiday of the year, a time to celebrate the harvest and prepare for the “dark half.” Where barriers between the physical and spiritual world broke down and the Otherworld could be accessed… 👻

We owe many of our Halloween traditions directly to this ‘Otherworld’:

Costumes — The Celts would dress as animals and monsters to prevent Otherworld fairies from seeing them as humans and kidnapping them.

Pumpkins — These ‘jack-o’-lanterns’ were originally turnips and potatoes back in the day, but their purpose remained the same: to place  outside homes and keep the Otherworld at bay.

Trick-or-Treating — Pranks or sweets? Kiddos would dress as dead souls, spirits from the Otherworld, and go door to door, collecting treats on their behalf.
