In which Sylvie Trevelyan makes a spectacular arse of herself in front of a handsome stranger and Dorian Pavus delights in her ridiculousness.

Luckily, the stranger is equally as charmed as she is.

“That’s him!”

Dorian gestured subtly with the knife he was using to cut his morning bagel and Sylvie glanced up from where she was idly twirling dials on the espresso machine. Very few people showed up at this time of the morning around there which is why she was always so monumentally bored on an early shift.

“Do we know him?” Sylvie asked as she watched a tall, blond someone reach the door and step inside.

“Not yet. I saw him moving in across the street a few days ago - wondrous arms.” He replied, giving her a pointed look as he grabbed his bagel and took a few steps back from the counter to eat it instead of serving. Sylvie glared at him before turning around with the best customer service smile she could muster at quarter past 6 in the morning.

The evening air was still mild with just the slightest hint of autumn chill on the breeze that occasionally fluttered across the balcony of Sylvie’s room at The Winter Palace. She took in a deep breath, scents of jasmine and wisteria from the gardens below filling her lungs. It couldn’t have even been midnight yet but Maker did it feel like. After the countless pleasantries and endless chitchat, Sylvie had actually been relieved when Grand Duchess Florianne had opened a fade rift in a hidden courtyard. Those were second nature to her at this point, unlike all the prancing and preening. 

She had no fucking clue quite how she had muddled through the evening with such success but at least it was over. After unceremoniously bursting back into the ballroom, fully armoured and covered in blood splatters and various demon bits, Sylvie had still managed to keep the court on side long enough to publicly have Florianne dragged away. Gaspard had been outed for his coup, Briala had been outed for her machinations and the day was saved. Hooray for the Inquisition and hooray for Orlais. She had even been allowed to stand by Celene’s side while the Empress made a speech, wasn’t that lucky.

To The End, Chapter 30

Chapter 30- A Present

Sylvie's lungs were burning, beads of sweat trickling down her temples as she dropped down to one knee. Her barrier was barely holding against the assault of lightening raining down on her and even though she still had her fingers grasped around her staff she may as well have been holding a fucking broom for all the good it was going to do her.

“Give up!” A voice shouted across the clearing.

“Fuck off!”

She could do it ...she could! One deep breath, followed by another and with shaking calves Sylvie pushed herself back into a standing position. She let out an undecipherable yell as she swung her staff low across the ground, a wall of flame erupting across the clearing. It bought her a few moments respite- if he couldn't see her clearly then he couldn't direct his spells effectively. Sylvie tried to centre herself, just like the Knight-Enchanter tomes said, and she could just feel the calmness that the books talked about. With her staff held high, she thrust her free hand at the wall of fire to draw it back to her and the flames obeyed. They arced and swirled, the very air around her growing heated and acrid. She'd always loved this moment- that split second when she felt the sheer power of fire at her beck and call. Sylvie threw the gathered flames forwards and they crashed into the ground in front of her opponent. She was not going to lose this.

The fireball missed it's target by a hairs breadth when he dodged, his barrier glowing blue as it deflected the errant wisps and cinders. Sylvie gathered her strength again, flames dancing on her fingertips. When she hurled it this time, the fireball ran head-on into a sphere of lightening. The resultant explosion shook both the ground and the trees, leaves and dirts flying everywhere. Sylvie was tossed backwards as was the other mage, the wind knocked out of them both where they hit the ground hard. A dead silence descended over the clearing ...well there wouldhave been silence if Sylvie's ears weren't ringing so loudly. She did manage to hear a loud groan and a string of swearing.

“Well that was ...academic.”

I know I’ve still got like 6 months until Sun and Moon come out but I’m already torn about the starter

Like Rowlet looks promising at first glance, and Popplio is cute (and probably has a majestic af final evolution) but considering the region, there’s probably going to be an abundance of grass and water types.

Does that make Litten a liability, or a necessity?

Anyway, they all look promising. I guess I’ll have to see what everyone else is thinking before making my final choice.

Does anyone else ever sit down to write, finish what they had in their mind as being the opening scene then discover it's been over 2500 words and all anyone has done is shoot some magic around, talk and think about what's been talked about? I guess it's easier to understand G. R. R. Martin when you've written 100k words of a romance fanfic and no one has even shagged yet. Perspective, yo.

Cullen breathed in the crisp dawn air as he strode across the courtyard, the heavy smell of Chantry incense still clinging to his cloak after his usual daily prayers. The inhabitants of Skyhold were just beginning their morning routines as he was finishing his, long strides already taking him back to his office. He heard hurried footsteps behind him and a quick shout of “Commander!” caused him to pause and turn.

“From The Inquisitor.” The runner said as explanation as he held out a small roll of parchment. Cullen took it with thanks and the runner was off again, delivering the other messages that Cullen could see in a small satchel on his belt. With a slight frown he unfurled the note- it wasn't like Sylvie to send someone with a message, much preferring to come bounding into his office to deliver it herself.

Sorry, I know I said I would stop by after sparring with Dorian but it took more out of me than I thought. I also owe you another apology- our sword training this morning will need to wait for another day. I hope you understand.

If your character was shot one day ago and is now running aroun the Olympics, it’s likely your reader will close the book and forget about all the important story-telling you had engaged them in prior. Facts count, so don’t let the small stuff derail your next big hit.

Lore question (kind of)

Does anyone happen to know if birthdays are called birthdays in Thedas? Most of the fics I've read usually refer to it as nameday but I can't figure out if that's actually canon or just a thing everyone has accepted.

Today I realised that it had been a month since I updated my fic and just over two weeks since I even thought about it. I wrote, and rewrote, that fucking chapter so many times. Thousands of words deleted with a scowl until I finally sat down today and thought rationally about just what it was that I hated. At 4pm in what I believed to be a stroke of genius I came up with an idea. It’s now 1am and it’s done, sent off across the world to my beta.

I am exhausted and possibly broken but the satisfaction of actually writing again, and being excited to write again is so worth it. 

The internet phenomena of cats sleeping on keyboards currently sums me up.

I can’t believe It’s been roughly 16 years since I stopped self-harming (cutting) and sometimes I wonder should I really have stopped? Maybe I’d be dead already if I had only continued.

It's been probably 10 or so years since I stopped. Just like what you are wondering, I have thoughts like that almost daily. Any time something gets to me, when I feel stressed or upset I can feel that urge again. It's a constant battle but it's a battle that we win every day. Keep surviving, keep fighting :) and remember that you're never alone in this fight.
