television history
iāve been trying to explain this sketch to people for years
there is literally no way to explain this sketch itās just a thing you have to see and even then Iām not sure why itās so funny
So last night was my first welding class and the second i walked through the door the teacher saidĀ āhey youāre zoe rightā and I started to panic because how does the teacher immediately know who I am fuck did I have this teacher before how come i donāt recognize him fuck fuck iām a terrible person
turns out iām just the youngest person in the class by about 30 years so the deduction wasnāt that hard
anyways, apparently people keep taking the welding class over and over again and the wait list is like 100 people long and so it was by some act of providence of pure dumb luck that I managed to get a spot. This also means I was the only person there who hadnāt welded before.
Iām stationed at a big center table where the teacher can keep an eye on me, and everyone else is in booths on the surrounding walls each making their own projects. And these are impressive looking projects. One guy is making a side table, a woman is making a giant metal rocking chair, and another guy was making a wind chime out of old compressed air canisters.Ā
The elderly gentlemen in the booth right behind me introduces himself to me as Jim and asks me if this is my first time and I say yeah and he smiles at me and tells me Iām gonna love it and how this class is so fun.
Immediately Jim becomes my new best friend. He comes over whenever I stop to take a break and asks how Iām doing and even helps me take the welding mask off when I couldnāt figure out how to do it myself.Ā
at one point i see Jim and another old guy talking to the teacher and i catch the old guy pointing at me. now being pointed at is usually never a good thing. the teacher has had me welding edges of scrap metal together so I can get a feel for the equipment. The teacher comes to check on me and I jokingly as him if those seasoned guys were making fun of me.Ā
Turns out Iām super good at welding and the old guy didnāt believe it was my first time welding ever and Jim was trying to convince him I was a newbie. :D
So for the entire 3 hour long class, like 15 middle aged and elderly people would periodically come by my table and check in with me, making sure Iām having fun and asking me questions about my life, and things like, do you know where the drinking fountain is, making sure Iām taking breaks, looking out for me and that kind of thing,Ā all while being completely kind and supporting and complimenting me on my welding skills.Ā
and thatās how a community center welding class gave me 15 new grandparents. i love them all and this class is going to be amazing
important addition 3 years later because I forgot:
the other elderly gentlemanās name is Gino and spoke with a thick Italian accent and took to calling me BellaĀ for the rest of the semester. Jim made sure to always take the booth closest to me.Ā
Another guy in the class named Mike did salvage diving as a hobby and always showed me pictures of the cool stuff heād found. He also made very cool sculptures out of spoons, forks and knives.Ā I at one point made an offhand joke that I was moving soon, and was jealous that Mike had all this cutlery to spare to make sculptures out of. (I was going to be moving in with my boyfriend and neither of us really had a lot of kitchenware) The next class he brought in an entire cutlery set insisting that he was trying to clean out his house because he had so many and wouldnāt take no for an answer. We still have them to this day :)
They had cupcakes waiting for me on my birthday and on the last day they had framed picture of me with my final project becauseĀ āitās important to celebrate your successesā and encouraged me to give it to my mom (which of course I did, along with my cattail sculpture)
long story short I would die for each and every one of them and thereās a group email chain that we all still keep in touch with and as of a few months ago it was Ginoās 85th birthday.Ā
Itās stories like these that shake me to my core and remind me that while I am not surrounded by the kindest people, kindness is innate and human. Iām so happy for you, op

u know what makes me cry..... that one van gogh quote about life changing for the better..... āmany people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. and it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, āwhat do i care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.ā yes, evil often seems to surpass good. but then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. one morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. and so i must still have hope.ā yeah..... Crying....
Another Van Gough quote we could all use: āIn the end, we shall have had enough of cynicism and skepticism and humbug, and we shall want to live more musically.ā
In case anyone was worried, this is a Nurse Shark, one of the types of sharks that doesnāt need to swim forward to breathe!Ā It also doesnāt appear to be distressed at all, it seems like itās just chilling.
More evidence that fish can play.
Trust me, if a nurse shark doesnāt want something done to it, it WILL let you know. Very, very painfully. They donāt bite often, but they WILL bite when provoked and can deal out serious damage.
This shark is, indeed, just chilling.
Hey, @shadowmaat, was this what your prompt meant? XD
Nurse sharks are part of a group usually called Carpet Sharks because they have the ability to breathe whilst stationary rather than only through constant motion. This is because they can gulp water and the motion allows them to push it through their gills.
This particular shark is calm, relaxed, and having fun. If it wasnāt, not only would the diver have not interacted with the shark in the first place, the shark would also swim off or be violently flicking its tail about. This is also a female and, honestly, the way sheās responding to the diver is more like a bit of casual courting and āokay I guess this is how this one tries to mate huh but hey heās not biting me to hold on so this is coolā.
The thing about sharks is they can have fun and they are curious. Most shark bites are curiosity bites (think baby shoving everything in their mouths bc āhuh whatās thisā) and this shark is able to know that this particular human has no desire to hurt her, is happy to swim about with her, and basically the weird dancing is just entertainment.
Itās difficult sometimes, I think, for people to see this sort of thing and not think āthat animal is being exploited!ā when this is a form of enrichment for the animal. Fish especially are a challenge to provide enrichment for sometimes, just because theyāre not like big cats or wolves or other animals like mammals and reptiles. They donāt have hands, feet, or paws. You canāt enrich a sharks life just with things they can bite, not when sharks also are willing to swim close to divers, bump against stuff, swim alongside, breach the surface with their heads to look above the water, and so on.
This right here is honestly a great way to entertain the shark and also give her something non-stressful and not too unusual for her to adapt to (Iām not kidding about the weird and bitey way sharks uhm⦠make more sharks).
Gods but Iād absolutely dive and dance with a shark ngl.
I just have one question: How can the diver hold her fin so lightly? Sharks are very smooth, shouldnāt it slip?
@yettofindaname - shark skin is quite smooth yes, but divers gloves will usually have some sort of grip pattern on them. Like woolen gloves that have little dots of rubber for gripping things like snow shovel handles etc. Shark skin may be smooth but the diver isnāt just holding her by just her fin. Heās got less of a grip on her fin than he does with his other arm which has chain mail on.
Heās also pressed against her in a way that assists with maintaining any sort of hold on miss nurse shark.
But, make no mistake, if she wished for him to stop, heād have no chance of holding onto her because underneath that smooth skin is a muscle man competition winner lol
āNo, I mean, we usually did the acceptance speech when thereās no one around, and all of a sudden, there are bunch of people and itās noisy and I was so out of it. My brain circuit completely stopped workingā ā 211122 vlive, jungkook (trans. cr. eternalsummerjk) YOU DID SO WELL! WE'ARE SO PROUD OF YOU JUNGKOOK!
well I sure hope so?
A couple things hereā¦
1. How do you suppose the 1960 conservatives would react to the idea of a President who has close ties to the leader of Russia? What would they say about the fact that so many of his followers are literal Nazis?
2. If AOC appeared to be a lunatic to 1960 Americans, it would be because the principle thing she advocates forāthe 70% marginal tax rateāwas policy at that time. So sheād be running around going āMarginal tax rates should be 70%!ā and everyone would go āā¦yes? They are? Shouldnāt you, a sitting member of Congress, know that?ā
The marginal tax rate in 1962 was 87% percent.
Thatās how the 1960s had the money to build highways and go to the fucking moon.

plaid shirt: my name is tyler and iāve created a monster
[tyler voiceover]
let me explain:
this is my husband jiahao. one time, i asked him what his favorite game was to play when he was growing up and you know what he said? fire. so for his birthday, i got him a fire pit - see here.
things started out pretty innocent, he would disappear for long periods of time and send me pictures of burnt sweet potatoes, but that was okay.
then he bought a small power saw. THEN the stealing began. well, kind of. he began scouring the neighborhoods for dead trees that were being thrown away so he could drag them home and burn them.
yesterday he said he wanted to go on a long walk, but it was only because he saw sticks next door
jiahao: excuse me, make room
[tyler voiceover]
he also bought a small hatchet, which was a little concerning but um, i take full responsibility for enabling all of this
jiahao: successful. iām so successful!
tyler: do i have plans of stopping him? no. because i like sāmores and the uh, the opportunity to eat sāmores in this house has increased by like, 200%
