I loved this scene. But I especially love Diego in this scene. Klaus is experiencing something new and scary with his own powers and is empathizing for that. Diego just wants to help.

I love them all, OK (yes, including Luther), but Luther, Allison and Klaus are speaking at least partially with personal motivations

Luther: is definitely worried about Allison. Might be worried about Vanya? 

Klaus: is frightened and uncertain about his own powers (like he has always been, but more so now that they might be evolving?) which has him empathize maybe more than he would otherwise?

Allison: is guilty over allowing herself to be used against Vanya as well as the generally shitty way they all treated each other, but specifically Vanya. Might be projecting some of her feelings missing Claire onto her relationship with Vanya?

Diego doesn’t have any of that, he’s just s;dlkfjs;lkdjf this scene is so good

@ourhitofsucrose I love the points you raise here. I think it’s an important point that most of the siblings struggle with empathy, not because they’re monsters, but because they have been raised in a way that didn’t support empathy and team work (despite what Reginald made it looks like).

We see them reproducing what they’ve been taught to do since they were little kids, and that’s why they unconsciously still exclude Vanya. Only Allison makes a conscious effort to try and include her, despite having also played in her isolation.

Why ? 

Because she has Claire. She says it when she watches the videotapes “And Vanya… why didn’t we include her ?” and then “I mean, if anybody treated Claire like that, I can’t even imagine…”. Having a child forced her to reflect on her childhood and to think outside of the box she’s been conditioned to think in.

Klaus ends up doing the same, when he learns Vanya has powers. Not that he doesn’t care about her, but their development of empathy is still stuck at “I can understand what someone go through if I went through it myself”. So since he’s struggling himself with emerging powers, he feels empathy toward her.

Diego had none of that, not that we know off. But he still feels terrible to leave her inside this room and see her so distressed.

We can draw two possible conclusions from this: 

Diego has actually high empathy, but it’s generally overshadowed by his constant anger and emotional regulation issues

Despite everything, Diego cares for Vanya

ok, agree with every point, but also: wasn’t diego just locked up in a cage for something he didn’t do like hours ago? his language says it all, he empathizes with something he went through himself, just like the others

hargreeves + being utterly and completely disgusted by the idea of romantic relationship between any of them acknowledging allison and luther’s romantic relationship, using luther’s romantic feelings as his motivation, talking about said relationship without any judgement whatsoever, not being weirded out by it in the slightest, and generally being totally 100% okay with it all
