I liked this post, scrolled for like another minute before I went “SHIT FUCK SHIT” and scrolled back to reblog it
I always reblog this one when I see it on my dash. When someone posts their own art, writing, or music here they are really hoping you will share it.
Put this in the MOMA
a year later this is still the funniest video on the internet and i can’t even adequately explain why
It’s a perfect blend of several major kinds of comedy: confessional, relatable observation comedy (who hasn’t had someone make an incorrect presumption based on your appearance?), absurdist prop comedy, and character comedy revolving around her looks, voice, and mannerisms. And reclining (almost) out of frame is the perfect button on the skit. It’s comedy genius.
one day you think: I want to die. and then you think, very quietly: actually. actually. I think I want a coffee. a nap. a sandwich. a book. and I want to die turns day by day into want to go home, I want to walk in the woods, I want to see my friend, I want to sit in the sun, I want a cleaner kitchen, I want a better job, I want to live somewhere else. I want to live.

“Neck lengths of birds + aggression: a study.”

A Reminder of Horrors Past:
Queztalcoatlus northroppi, the largest thing to ever fly and at least 30% neck by mass. Also one of the primary predators of saurpods, whose babies it would swallow whole like an awful prehistoric pelican.
Sometimes I like to imagine a Jurassic Park where the scientists decided to clone back/construct all the really fucked up shit form the age of the dinosaurs.
IMPORTANT ADVICE FOR TUMBLR NEWBIES:
Remember to send any questions you have regarding Jake Gyllenhaal's sexual preferences to the nearest Narnia fan blog
Plato makes up Atlantis as an allegory and over 2,000 years later people are still looking for it. You might as well be looking for Narnia.
Plato: Luxury and unlimited power are forces that corrupt human beings and lead them to being colonialist and stupid. The gods will punish Athens if we continue to exploit others for our own gain. I have invented this society as a parable to illustrate my point because I tend to use metaphor for a lot of things.
Everyone: But where are you hiding it though
Plato: I’ve purposefully included details like a mud shoal west of Iberia that doesn’t exist and references to a volcanic eruption that we all have cultural memory of as an obvious indication that I made this up. Are you paying attention? It’s a metaphor. I’m using literary references. You can go west of Iberia yourself. It’s not there. I explained where it is and it’s not there. You all know it’s not there. Please stop it with the luxury and exploitation. That’s my main point here.
Everyone: Yeah but where is it though
I mean, he dated the destruction of Atlantis to the exact time when the Younger Dryas period ended due to a comet strike that rapidly melted the ice caps and caused the sea levels to rise and swallow up previously lush and dry land. Also basically every civilization has some sort of flood myth like Atlantis or Noah's Ark, and many of those myths also make references to the same period of time. So if it was a metaphor, it wasn't a very original one and was definitely based off if already existing mythologized history.
Let's also not forget that his description of the location, landscape, and geology of the capitol of Atlantis nearly perfectly matches the Azore Islands, which just happen to not only have large chunks of said islands which would've been above water during the last ice age, but are also located right at the junction of three continental plates, making vertical crust displacement of the islands more likely and significant in the event of a natural disaster.
Oh, and guess what would've been on the opposite side of the North American continental plate? A mile thick ice cap, pressing down. Press down on one side of the plate, the other side raises up, like a see-saw. So what happens when a massive chunk of that ice cap gets melted, and pours out into the ocean? Sea level rises, and the weight is lifted off the plate, letting the opposite side sink. Ta da! Instant sunken island.
Atlantis deniers be like: "guess Plato did a silly one"
Atlantis deniers be like: 'i guess every civilization ever just imagined it"
No, Plato imagined it. Because he wasn’t a historian. He was a philosopher with a well documented habit of making up entire civilizations as thought experiments. There’s no mention of Atlantis anywhere before he made it up as an allegory.
Plato didn’t do a silly one. He did a metaphor that nobody was supposed to take seriously. He put jokes and references in it meant to be a wink and nudge at the audience to indicate that he made it up. He also included a super ancient version of Athens modeled after classical era Athens that very notably has no record of existing because 12,000 years ago Athens didn’t exist yet.
Also ATLANTIS IS NOT A MYTH. IT IS AN ALLEGORY. YOU KNOW. LIKE THE CAVE.
And Greece did have a flood myth. It wasn’t Atlantis. It was Deucalion and Pyrrha.
Spirit: Stallion of The Cimarron & the Indian Boarding Schools/Residential Schools allegory
Holy shit!
Was this intentional?
Considering the rest of the film’s heavy anti-colonization messaging, the main antagonist being heavily modeled on & inspired by General Custer, the other main (human) protagonist being a Native man (& the fort is where Spirit meets Little Creek), yes, most likely
YES. It was 100% intentional. I highly recommend reading up on the making of this film. There was an incredible amount of care that went into the development.
They had Lakota consultants for the project, especially regarding the use of the Lakota language in the film (which is used sparsely, but when used is accurate).
It’s par for the course now to consult people belonging to a culture for projects representing it these days (i.e. Moana, Frozen 2, etc.) but it certainly wasn’t when Spirit came out in 2002.
This film is allegorical to its core.
Twitter users are defending their right to assume Picasso was a renaissance artist. Tiktok users think watching any film made outside the US makes you a snob. “Replace classic lit with YA and fan fiction” discourse is flourishing. I think we’re just living in anti intellectual times.
and i really dont gaf!!!!!!!
I would like you to consider the political implications of mocking non-American film, dismissing the arts, and replacing thought provoking and stimulating media with media that’s just designed to entertain and sell. Just for a moment.
Both were exceptional people. Who bore an exceptional daughter. — OBI WAN KENOBI - EPISODE VI
This country claims to be democratic but 9 unelected people who's values and opinions formed decades prior, who can get into this position without strong or even any valid credentials, can decide to negatively impact or even destroy millions of lives and they cannot be held accountable for it. They can't be impeached or voted out. It's only the most convoluted combination of election-year voting, voter suppression/lack thereof, and idk fucking cowardice from both sides that got any of them to where they are now. 9 people who are cemented in their beliefs and then use the law and constitution to justify their moral opinions that they insist don't influence their rulings at all. We can't vote then out. We just have to hope they retire or die under the presidency of someone who doesn't want to actively kill everything, and eve then we have to contend with any given republican or spineless Democrat in the Senate.
And even then, we cannot get rid of them. Nine people make decisions for 300+ million, affecting their ability to defend themselves, to live peacefully, to lead healthy and happy and safe lives. Nine people can ruin lives for decades to come.
Nine people. Nine. People.

Losing Miranda Rights protections wasn’t on my 2022 bingo card yet here we are….
The Supreme Court limited the ability to enforce Miranda rights in a ruling Thursday that said that suspects who are not warned about their
Because what America really needs right now is less ability to hold cops personally accountable for their actions
So this means that you do still have the right to remain silent.
You just now cannot sue if you are not told your rights.
Unfortunately, this will mostly harm those unaware of their rights. So will deeply, and mostly, effect uneducated people and those unfamiliar with U.S. laws (such as new immigrants).
They (cops) are not only further protected, but now are allowed to not tell you when you have that right. Which honestly can just be confusing for anyone.
It’s fucked up and definitely targets marginalized individuals, in addition to protecting cops. Double lose.
The Supreme Court does not care about us.
Now more than ever: DO NOT TALK TO COPS.
If you are taken into custody for Anything, you invoke your right to a lawyer (“I am invoking my right to a lawyer. Here is my lawyer’s number/Please assign me a public defender.”)
Then you shut the fuck up. “I am invoking my right to remain silent.” Do not make small talk. Do not answer ANY questions. If at any point you do (like to ask for the bathroom, a drink, etc) immediately repeat that you are invoking your right to silence. They will try to get you to talk. They’re allowed to try to get you to break your silence, and they will do so. They’ll make you wait for the lawyer.
Every cop show ever has taught you that getting a lawyer looks guilty, and I’m telling you that’s propaganda. Get the fucking lawyer. Even if they just want a statement out of you, even if you called them. Get the lawyer. Shut up.
Welcome to the United States of America where if you want to be safe from guns you die if you want to get a safe abortion you die if you're gay you die if you're black you die if you're a woman you die if you're disabled you die if you're a kid you die if you're a POC you die and no one will do anything about it because some stupid cuntrags that are two steps away from tripping on a staircase and dying cling to some dipshit beliefs from over 6 decades ago and decide to make it everyone's problem
