i have a very particular image in my head with jabber doing every illegal jump and nearly breaking their bones all the time but still being a national treasure, propped all the time, and jabber is rather happy as long as she can do these extremely difficult and dangerous moves. gives her a thrill!
vs zanka who has the most evil coach in the world (kyouka), an eating disorder, and is nothing but fully miserable as he cant land any quads and even if she is doing fine in the junior division, it isnt enough. theyll end up breaking their leg and needing a cane (yes, aibo)
if jabber ever meets zanka in the future, who now just works at some small convenience store that enjin owns, and mentions that he knew zanka, i think zanka will pull their hair out and die
more on zanka, i do think she wants to get back to figure skating but on their own terms. picking out their own routine and music and what they feel like doing. that spark to continue might happen before or after meeting jabber, im not too sure which way i lean, but im sure once he gets out of his head he can do it.
zanka will also need to overcome some internalized ableism but she will get there !! believe in her. that eating disorder might not leave anytime soon tho but hey. babysteps. she needs smth to control when she feels like her life is nothing but a sad joke
Random ass rant but it's bothering me. People baby Zanka way too fucking much in this fandom. That piece of shit is just as terrible as Jabber just in a different sense and I'm tired of y'all acting like he ain't.

Another point I forgot to add while talking is that Zanka, during his first fight with Jabber, didn't mind hitting Rodu, and this was the main reason for the success of their plan, even though we all know what happened after that.
MAJOR ON WHEN HE BROKE JABBER'S RIB. He KNEW he broke it, absolutely no way he didn't with how in tune he is with every vibration that is sent through Lovely. I also reiterate that he specifically cited that he ENJOYED and found pleasure in taking down someone he viewed as above him during that fact.

I understand janka as tsundere for tsundere, except Zanka is a level 1 beginner tsundere ("it’s not like if I liked you BAKA !") while Jabber is a level 36 advanced tsundere ("I looooooove you so much ! /sarcasm /irony /joking" -> it’s a way of deflecting any real feeling he could feel -> if it gets too real he will deflect even more -> it’s really hard to know what he truly feels and he could be deeply in love and still have everyone believe he is just cruelly making fun of and taunting his love interest)

okay, so here are some things we know for sure about her/her past so far:
she's a former assassin
meaning she has killed people in the past
enjin brought her into the cleaners first of the main trio (maybe the first of akuta)
he's the reason she doesn't kill anymore
unclear if he's the reason why she's no longer an assassin, but if not for him and his "leash" on her, she would have no problem killing her enemies
she's cocky as fuck
she's always the first to throw herself into battle regardless of strategy or safety
someone she once loved is now dead
both her parents are a sore subject
with that out of the way, i have some theories about her, as well as her parents and what might have happened to them. going to add a cut here since there will be manga spoilers up to the current arc.
first, let's revisit when the cleaners first met amo. out of everyone who fell under amo's powers, riyo's expression was noticeably different than everyone else's:
her face is cast in shadows in the first panel, intentionally creepier than the others, and she's sweating in both of them. in the second panel, she doesn't look angry/serious like rudo and follo, but almost in disbelief. her eyes are wide and she has a nervous smile. whoever she's seeing here, she never thought she'd see them again.
zanka confirms this when he notes how amo's powers are especially brutal for people who have lost loved ones:
zanka is thinking this just as delmon realizes that his late wife has not come back from the dead, but his focus is on riyo, who is slumped over and looking small. we don't see her face, but we see zanka's sadness on her behalf. either he knows something about her past, or kei urana is using the parallel to inform us, the reader, that riyo is having the same realization as delmon.
amo's powers in this arc seem to only target romantic love - rudo saw chiwa, delmon saw his wife, follo likely saw that nameless girl from his flashback that he was hinted to have a thing for, despite her caring more for alan. amo wanted to talk about romance, so it makes sense that the only love that was manifested in this arc was romantic - thus ruling out the possibility that riyo saw her parents or another family member.
with that in mind, riyo must have been in love before and that person is now dead. with the way she looked while under amo's powers, i would wager that she probably saw them die. if we want to take it a step further and consider her history as an assassin, it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that she was the one who killed them. either that, or she feels a certain amount of guilt pertaining to their death. maybe she couldn't save them, or it was her fault that they got caught/killed by someone else, but either way it's clear that her reaction to amo's spell is darker than everyone else's.
okay, but what about her parents? she mentioned to rudo how parents give their children a lot of things, but they're not always good. it's vague, but it gets the message across that she doesn't have a good relationship with her own parents. so far in the series, we only get one notable mention of her mother and father.
in the information broker arc, kuro asks her this:
the way kuro's asking this implies that riyo's mom is an unknown variable to her. she doesn't know where she is and maybe she doesn't know who she is, either. unlike in amo's arc, we see half of riyo's face - one where her eyes are obstructed and one where we see her profile. to me, she doesn't look guilty or nervous here like she did when she was under amo's influence. she looks irritated, maybe even angry. she looks a bit like rudo whenever his biological father comes up:
of course, riyo has a better lid on her anger, but rudo gets a similar treatment of having half his face covered in shadows. i might be reading too much into this, but the partial obscurities could be indicative of the character only having partial knowledge (this will come up again when we see riyo's reaction to her father being brought up).
my guess is that riyo doesn't know her mother personally, but knows something upsetting about her, much like rudo does with alto. the difference here is that riyo doesn't want to know more about her mother for whatever reason, whereas rudo wants to know everything about his father. for riyo to not want to know, i wouldn't be surprised if she's lacking in more information than rudo is (and maybe that's why her face is more obscured). it could very well be that whatever it is she doesn't know is for the best, and that knowing would only make things worse.
also. speaking of fathers:
i think it's interesting how riyo's face is never fully shown whenever her family or past loved ones are brought up. in this instance, we have a clear view of her eyes, though, which tells me that, while she might not know much about her mother, she knows exactly what happened to her father. not only that, but the way mymo asks implies that he knows that she knows.
we also get a faraway view where she looks small and her face is blank. this panel could be representative of her having emotionally removed herself that memory before mymo brought it back to the forefront. and in the second panel, her eyes look more like they did during amo's arc cranked up to eleven: shocked, traumatized, guilty.
just like he did with zanka and enjin, mymo asked riyo this to hurt her. and clearly, it hit her harder than it did the other two. if i had to guess, i would say that riyo killed her father.
while i think that riyo blames herself for the death of the person she loved, i think her father's blood is directly on her hands.
much like amo, her idea of love seems to be twisted due to factors outside of her control. based on this panel:
it seems like she has the idea where if you love someone too much, it'll end up falling apart. not sure if this is referring to her father, which would make sense since he came up only a few chapters beforehand, or of someone else, like her mother or former loved one. either way, it seems like she had an experience where she loved someone so much and that ended up being the undoing of them both.
well, as far as she's concerned, that's what happened. i'm going to bet that the reality is that she was manipulated, used, and abused by several adults in her life and they convinced her that she's the one to blame for it all.
as a result, she's always throwing herself into danger in an almost self-sacrificial way: against amo, against the trash beast that ended up breaking her spine, etc. she says it's because she's an "act first, think later" type of person, but i'm not so sure if that's the root of it. it seems to me that whatever happened in her past has her believing that she has to be the one to throw herself into danger to save the people she cares about, even when doing so makes the overall situation worse for those very same people.
(also, going off of her belief that too much love leads to ruin: she's also the character who's the most detached from her vital instrument. in her fight with noerde, she commented how, while her scissors are suited to her fighting style, she's better off alone. no other giver has ever said something like that about their vital instruments outside of that - most of them refer to their objects like they're people, either with human pronouns or by name, whereas riyo seems to still have a degree of separation.)
so, tl;dr, my theory is this: riyo was manipulated and taken advantage of as a child, thus having a twisted and self-sabotaging mindset instilled into her at an early age. she doesn't know much about her mother, killed her father, and blames herself for the death of someone she once had romantic feelings for.
