After watching about 50 C-dramas, I can confidently say that Wei Wuxian is the only character who has actually died after falling off a cliff.
He always was an overachiever.
Attempt the impossible was ingrained in his bones so can't really blame the guy
Legend of the Magnate (大生意人- Dà shēngyìrén) meta: Yuanbao's Classroom
Show's weibo
Exile (流人 - Liú rén)
Gu Pingyuan's "starting identity"—an officially certified exile. This identity comes with a "hell mode" buff, subjecting him to discrimination and restricted movement. However, Gu Pingyuan, in Ningguta, a place of exile, managed to turn a bad hand into a winning one, achieving an astonishing reversal from the bottom of society to a business tycoon.
Door-to-door pawning (上门当 - Shàngmén dāng)
This is a revolutionary service launched by Gu Pingyuan, the "pawnshop delivery guy." In an era where traditional pawnshops wait for customers to come to them, they go against the grain, having their staff proactively offer door-to-door appraisals and pickups—a true game-changer in the service industry. This is not just about increased convenience, but a revolutionary shift in business thinking. While competitors are still passively waiting for customers to come to them, they have already begun to proactively develop a core competitive advantage.
Fourth Counter (四柜 - Sì guì)
The "mid-level management position" in a pawnshop sounds like a leadership role, but in reality, it's a "sandwich" position. Above are the senior counters, the second counter, and the third counter, while below are the clerks. The power seems limited, but the responsibility is considerable. Gu Pingyuan held this title at Wang Tiangui's Taiyufeng Pawnshop, but he managed to turn this awkward position into a steppingstone to power, staging a "counter employee's counterattack story."
Pawnshop Manager (朝奉 - Cháofèng)
The "chief appraiser" in a pawnshop, a highly skilled expert who makes a living through keen observation. A good clerk is the core asset of a pawnshop. Su Zixuan poached over a dozen top clerks overnight with hefty sums of money, essentially taking away the opponent's CPU—a simple, brutal, yet extremely effective "decapitation tactic" in business warfare.
Draft Bank (票号 - Piào hào)
A 19th century Shanxi banking institution, which dealt in drafts or bills of exchange, payable in the towns and cities in which clients did business), a type of an exchange shop. It was a financial behemoth of the Qing Dynasty, the prototype of modern banks. Their main businesses were remittances, deposits, and loans; they played a game of making money from money. Li Wantang, ordered by a prince to establish the "Taiping House," aimed to unify the financial world. Gu Pingyuan, however, countered with "virtual transactions" and "credit certificates," making him a veritable financial magician.
Pawn shop (当铺 - Dàngpù)
An ancient "emergency financing center," its core business was "exchanging goods for money." You would pawn items to borrow money, agreeing on interest and a term, and repay the money to redeem the items upon maturity; if you couldn't repay, the items would be disposed of by the pawnshop.
Illegally Traded Salt (私盐 - Sī yán)
Salt sold without paying taxes or going through official channels. This is a high-risk, high-reward business, with extremely high profits but also extremely high risks; one wrong move and you could lose your life.
Salt Permit (盐引 - Yán yǐn)
A government-issued "license for the legal sale of salt," a monopolistic industry license in ancient times. Possessing it granted the right to legally sell salt and a ticket to enormous profits.
The Three Letters and Six Rites (三书六礼 - Sān shū liù lǐ)
The "official standard procedure" for marriage, a complete and solemn set of rituals from betrothal to wedding. Gu Pingyuan strictly followed this procedure with Chang Yu'er, formally marrying her step by step.
Orchid Snow Tea (兰雪茶 - Lán xuě chá)
A "phenomenal, blockbuster tea IP" created single-handedly by Gu Pingyuan. It's more than just tea; it's a symbol of Gu Pingyuan's business acumen and rebellious spirit. From improving the processing techniques and breaking conventional naming to obtaining the "Number One Tea Under Heaven" certification from Empress Dowager Cixi, every step was a precise marketing strategy. This tea was his weapon in breaking the monopoly of traditional tea merchants, and also a vehicle for uniting people and realizing his business ambitions.
The Great Tea Conference (万茶大会 - Wàn chá dàhuì)
The "Oscars" of the tea industry. It's a top-tier stage that tea merchants nationwide desperately want to reach, a key to brand recognition and securing high-end distribution channels. Gu Pingyuan, with his "Lanxue Tea," made a powerful debut here, directly challenging the old order and staging a spectacular industry comeback.
Tea Merchants Association (茶商会 - Chá shānghuì)
A "monopolistic alliance and rule-maker" in the tea industry. Controlled by industry giants like Old Master Hu and Second Master Hou, they wield pricing power and control sales channels. Anyone who dares to disobey is met with a joint boycott. Gu Pingyuan's solo challenge is against this massive "vested interest group," a typical struggle between emerging forces and the old-world rules of the US.
Water Transport Gang (漕帮 - Cáo bāng)
An "ancient logistics force" controlling the Grand Canal's shipping, they were local tyrants on the water, respected by both the legitimate and criminal worlds. They controlled the lifeline of north-south trade. Li Qin's use of the Canal Guild's goods from the Kagu Plain is a typical example of exploiting channel advantages for business suppression.
Gatekeeper's Gift (门包 - Mén bāo)
A "hard currency" for entering a prince's mansion or government office; an ancient version of an "unofficial entrance fee." Want to meet a high-ranking official? You first have to get past the gatekeeper. If the red envelope isn't thick enough, it won't even get through the crack in the door. It's an unspoken rule, the most blatant manifestation of rent-seeking.

I remember when I was 26. People in their 40s were very, very old. Now, thanks to advances in science, people in their 50s are very, very young.
when i post about xicheng eventually someone replies trying to explain why someone would ship it either positive style (here's some interesting parallels to consider!) or negative style (people have bad taste what do you expect) and i want everyone to know from the bottom of my heart i do get it i ge.t it. i understand why people would ship it. but what none of those things adequately explain. is Second Most Fanworks. So, How Peaceful *is* Lan Wangji?
It’s a great question. Some might say the Most Fundamental Question Of Our Time. And they only say that because it Is. Does such a Question have an Answer? Can any of us know what is in the mind of another? Can we ever truly know how Peaceful someone is? Yes, we can. I made a scale for it and it is Foolproof.
Lan Wangji takes us on quite the peacefulness roller coaster over the course of this show. He’s had some highs (while hanging out at the top of a waterfall) and some lows (dashed on the rocks below the cliffs at Nightless City) and through it all he has made like Three Whole Facial Expressions. He’s Perfect in Every Way. Now that we have been on this journey with him, now that we have become intensely, almost obsessively, familiar with his Brow Furrows and Lip Twitches and the way his Eyes somehow go all Soft and Warm, don’t we deserve to know the Official and Canonical Highest and Lowest points? We Do. Let’s begin.
Least Peaceful Episode: It is Episode 32, with a peacefulness average of 1.5/10. I think we all expected it to be Episode 33, and it would have been, if we could count only the flashback portion, which netted a staggering 0/10 average. However, the International Peacefulness Blog Rating Committee forbids such Technicalities, and Lan Wangji’s Soft Little Face when Wei Wuxian woke up tragically lost its episode the title.
Least Peaceful Moment: Obviously. Obviously. It was awarded a -3 but we all know that this is a Lack of Peace that Cannot Be Quantified. I gave it a -3 because I couldn’t figure out how to work Absolute Despair/10 into the average.
Most Peaceful Episode: Another twist, it’s Episode 35, with an Absolutely Incredible 6.9/10. This is because Wei Wuxian is Alive and he spends Relatively Little Time being Actively Menaced by Dogs or Nephews or Brothers or Swords. Plus a Very Homoerotic Duet. All these elements do Great Things for Lan Wangji’s peacefulness.
Most Peaceful Moment: Could there ever be any Doubt? Of course it is when Wei Wuxian Returns to Him For Forever. Lan Wangji doesn’t even appear in this scene! But the Overwhelming Peacefulness is Too Strong To Be Denied.
Series Peacefulness Average: We have come to the Crux of our Investigation. The Question that scholars have puzzled over Since Time Immemorial. How Peaceful Was Lan Wangji, On Average, Over the Course Of The Show? Through a complicated series of Calculations and Arcane Computations, I can now confirm the answer that we have all sought, the Ultimate Peacefulness Average: 4.2/10.
What I appreciate about prestige historical cdramas (other than the bleakness), to be specific the currently airing Swords into Plowshares is that they go in detail about how war works. Unlike some idol historical cdramas where war is just the FL/ML making empowering speeches one after the other (*looks at legend of female general*), these proper historical cdramas go in detail about the rationing problem, the manpower problem, the refugees and how to care for them like these officials in Swords and Plowshares are having meetings, discussions upon discussions and strategising and everything they talk about is in as much detail as to make it engaging enough. I'm not shading idol historical cdramas because I enjoy many of them but sometimes they are too shallow about the topic they are talking about (or sometimes it's downright delulu land), so I really appreciate it when a proper historical cdrama comes around and has me thinking and using my brain.
As a lesbian, i love enaging with mlm the way i love watching men at the Olympics: the complete safety of knowing I won't be expected to participate, but the audacity to think i know better than the judges
I have found my new dream hat.
No, I am not kidding I WANT
i think what makes tumblr great now is that nobody gives a shit? Like, there is NOTHING to be gained from being on here except the pure joy of making stuff for people and with people?
If you're on twitter or threads or reddit, and you say, "Oh, I had a terrible experience with Delta Airlines. They canceled my flight and then booked me into a hotel room with a stranger," and you tag Delta, there's a chance Delta Airlines itself will come and apologize. Maybe even give you some SkyMiles or something.
But if you complain about a terrible airline experience on tumblr, all you can hope for is that someone might come along and write slash fiction about two guys who get booked into the same hotel room by Delta Airlines.
You can't gain social capital by being here. Nobody knows who you even ARE because your user name is, like, some randomly generated phrase or else an obscure reference to hockey sex books.
I'm not saying it's perfect, of course. It's a super toxic hellsite that eats the ashes of its former self to survive. But it beats twitter any day, and not only because twitter is owned by a raving mad white supremacist fuckchild.
Teachers have tried this and are amazed when their classes don’t go feral like in the book. It’s almost as if the book was supposed to be satire and not a treaty on the nature of humanity.
there’s a timeskip
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
after losing control of the signal fire there’s a FUCKING TIMESKIP and when the next chapter starts everyone’s hair is several inches longer and their clothes have rotted to shreds and they’re still just kind of chilling!!!!
IT TAKES THE TERRIBLE IMPERIALISM MIND-POISONED EXCESSIVELY BRITISH BOYS IN THE ACTUAL BOOK SEVERAL MONTHS TO COMMIT A SINGLE ACT OF INTENTIONAL VIOLENCE, EVEN THE ONE (1) CHILD WRITTEN AS AN ACTUAL SOCIOPATH
AND then when they DO turn on each other it is because
THERE’S AN UNSPECIFIED WORLD WAR HAPPENING
AND A PILOT’S CORPSE CRASH LANDS ON THE ISLAND POST-DOGFIGHT AND THE CHILDREN MISTAKE THE PARACHUTE FOR A MONSTER AND SPIRAL INTO PARANOIA
BECAUSE CHILDREN INHERIT THE LEGACY AND TRAUMA OF VIOLENCE FROM THE ADULTS WAGING WAR AROUND THEM
HURR DURR IN THE REAL WORLD IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN LIKE IN LORD OF THE FLIES -
IT DIDN’T HAPPEN THAT WAY IN LORD OF THE FLIES EITHER YOU JUST HAVEN’T READ IT SINCE HIGH SCHOOL IF EVER AND DON’T REMEMBER WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THE GODDAMN BOOK
#tbf the dude wrote it to be a dick
yes. yes he did. i’m also gonna direct you to the real life ‘lord of the flies’ which occured in the 1960s, when six tongan schoolboys got stranded on a desert island for over a year before being rescued by an australian fisherman (who, it should be noted, later took on all six as crewmembers because the reason they were out in the first place was because they wanted to see the world, and named his ship the Ata after the island they were stranded on). nobody died. the only injuries that occurred were accidental, and when one of the boys broke his leg falling down a cliff, the others braced it and looked after him so well that it healed perfectly. if they argued, then they would literally go to opposite sides of the island until they’d cooled off. after leaving the island, they remained friends for the rest of their lives. here’s a photo of them as adults, with their rescuer (who is third from the left) and other members of his crew.
i read about this in rutger bregman’s human kind, a book i cannot recommend highly enough, but if you don’t want to go and read a whole book about the inherent goodness of humanity (which again, you really should) then the relevant excerpt can be found here.
Hey @phillipfancypants I am intrigued, go ahead and lay out your argument

Okay so basically this all started in 10th grade when my English teacher (idk if this context is needed but she grew up in Yugoslavia in the ‘80s before moving to the US as a teen and she has a VERY thick accent. She’s about 6’4” and has huge black hair that sticks out all around her head. She’s the human embodiment of a corvid bird. Truly such a fascinating person) anyway she was talking about Lord of the Flies in class and mentioned that a few years ago some students of hers tried to convince her that the book couldn’t have taken place during WWII and that she didn’t believe them because “there have been no atomic bombs except during World War Two” and an atomic bomb is referenced as the inciting factor for why the boys were flying over a deserted island in the first place.
But the thing is, if you actually look at all the throwaway historical context details in the book, there is no logical way that it could have taken place in WWII. I realized that all clues point towards an alternate timeline where the Cold War turned hot. About halfway through the book I started bookmarking any scrap of information related the time period and it was getting to the point where each chapter took me twice as long to read because I would continually need to check various articles and Wikipedia pages to cross reference.
Eventually, I ended up writing a 5 -page paper picking the book apart for details which you can read here but I’ll also give you the individual points (a mixture of historical details and borderline headcanon):
Early on in the book, the boys mention that there are probably maps in “the Queen’s library” that show where they are—this was one of the first things that stuck out to me, as Elizabeth II didn’t become Queen until 1952, and WWII ended in 1945
Ralph mentions watching something on television at home. His dad, although a naval officer, would almost certainly not be able to afford a TV in 1945, BUT televisions were already popularized around the time of Lizzy 2’s coronation (or at the very earliest the 1948 London Olympics) and it’s believable that Ralph could have had one at home. There’s also some mentions around space travel/putting a man on Mars that would make more sense during the Cold War
I found Piggy’s character to be very interesting. For one thing, he’s introduced as being fat due to his Aunt owning a candy store (his parents are both dead). If you know anything about the sugar ration during WWII, you’d know that candy stores would have been non-operational and Piggy would probably not have had access to an excess of sweets.
Continuing with Piggy, I’d place his distinctive accent as either London Cockney or London Estuary. If Piggy was from London, he would have been evacuated to the British countryside via train (the same evacuations in which the Pevensies stay with their uncle in Narnia) long before the dropping of the atomic bombs. Here’s where the headcanon comes in: I’d be willing to bet that Piggy was evacuated to the countryside as a baby during WWII and both his parents were among the 27,000 killed in the London Blitz, hence why he now lives with his aunt. By assuming the years leading up to the book are peacetime instead of wartime, there’s no issue around the candy store.
And finally, the most compelling argument imo…WHY WOULD BRITISH BOYS BE EVACUATED AFTER VE DAY??? In the book, it’s very clear that the LOTF boys are being evacuated from their boarding school after an atomic bomb was dropped. Victory in Europe was May 8th, 1945. The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early August. In what world would British boys be evacuated by a plane traveling over tropical airspace (historically child evacuations in the UK were domestic and carried out by train) to protect them from a bomb dropped in Japan four months after the end of the war in Europe?? The only plausible explanation would be that the USSR dropped a bomb on an Allied power and the boys are being evacuated from Briton all together to avoid nuclear fallout and/or future bombings.
Final note, at one point the boys consider building a new plane and decide against the idea because they “might get shot down by the Reds” even though the soviets were literally allies with Britain during WWII. Do you know when they most certainly weren’t allies? The Cold War.
Anyway, I end up giving her this essay which she reads and then promptly says “these are all very interesting points, but there was STILL no nuclear bomb besides the ones dropped on Japan in World War 2” and I’m like “Yes!! I know this!! And I’m saying it’s an alternate future!!” But she never really seemed to understand what I was saying.
Anyway a few weeks ago I was at my job (I’ve been working IT some summers at my high school after I graduated) and I ran into her and she says “I was going through my desk and I found that essay you wrote on LOTF! I read it again and it was a really good argument piece, especially for a 10th grader.”
So of course I ask her “oh really? Well, were you finally convinced?”
And she basically says “it was good…but no :) <3”
And I have simply not known peace since.
I know I haven't posted regularly on this blog in years but I'm not seeing a whole lot of posts on this site about what's happening in Minneapolis right now. And the posts I am seeing are not covering the scope of it. I'm genuinely surprised because tumblr is usually where I find out about things organically through my feed. So I'm making a post about it.
A brief summary of events, from someone who pays attention and also lives here, best taken with a grain of salt and some fact checking:
2020: George Floyd is murdered by Minneapolis police. There are weeks of protests about it. It makes national news. Protests happen in DC. The infamous Trump and his bible photo shoot happens.
2024: Gov. Tim Walz is Kamala Harris' running mate in the presidential election. He starts the "they're just weird" thing. Is folksy, Trump personally hates him.
November 2025: ICE starts showing up to "crack down" on "illegal immigrants" in our Somali community. I may remember the numbers wrong, but something like 90% of our Somali neighbors are either naturalized or were born here. People distribute ICE whistles and are on high alert. Localized to the twin cities.
December 2025: Nick Shirley is paid by a bunch of MN Republicans to do an exposé on daycare fraud. I didn't hear much about this. All I really know is this was an ongoing investigation that MN officials were already taking care of and some of the guilty parties have already gone to court from a COVID era food assistance program. Mostly, if not all, legal US citizens. He did a really bad job at doing journalism and just showed up to day cares with a camera crew and went "YUP nobody's here" as if they weren't in lock-down procedure because some fuck ass white men showed up with camera equipment that could easily be mistaken for guns. I believe. I will fact check all of this and will correct myself in a reblog if necessary. (source but not all the details that I remember hearing about but they said there was no recorded evidence of fraud)
Conservative internet explodes. Kristi Noem sends a mess of agents. I know it's more than a thousand more. They call it Operation Metro Surge. They are going everywhere. There are protests. People try to interrupt the arrests. It's a lot.
1/7/2026: Renee Nicole Good is shot by an ICE agent in the middle of a protest. A few blocks away from where George Floyd was killed. Broad daylight. In front of a crowd. While she was following instructions to turn her vehicle around. Jonathan Ross, the piece of shit Nazi who did it, was recording on his phone the whole time, switched his phone to his non dominant hand so he could more effectively shoot her in the face from 2 feet away. Claims self defense, several angles immediately disprove him. He releases his video, he calls her a "fucking bitch" as her corpse drives away. Does not help him at all. (source) He has not been seen since. Some photos/reports exist of a bunch of agents showing up to his house and taking some tubs and art away. His wife is an immigrant. (source but it's the daily mail so grain of salt.)
Not hours later they go raid a school and tear gas a bunch of kids. (source). Minneapolis has switched to distance learning. I'm not sure about St. Paul.
The last week: There are up to 3,000 ICE agents here. Keep in mind Minneapolis and St. Paul only have 600 or fewer police officers each. So these dudes are roaming in packs. It's 2-4 dudes to a car and 2-5 cars per pack. People are "commuting with" ICE agents to honk and alert people that they're there. People are going on patrols with their neighbors.
ICE is no longer asking "are you a citizen." They are simply walking up to you and taking you into custody. They are going door to door. They have started just breaking the door down if you don't comply. They are driving recklessly to just grab pedestrians and drivers alike (source). People are afraid to go get groceries. It's all over the state. I am learning names of cities in places I thought were just factory farm land and I've lived here my whole life because they're doing raids there. I had to text my family in the suburbs because I saw reports of my small little hometown an hour away getting door knocks today.
It's insane and I am not doing it justice. There are thousands of masked federal agents roaming around all of Minnesota with no warrant or specific goal. They are just trolling around looking for people. They are detaining anyone and everyone. They are beating people. They are pepper spraying people. They are kidnapping people. They are acting unconstitutionally, aggressively, and unpredictably. They are creating situations that are dangerous so that they can try to justify beating or shooting their way out. I will run an errand and then get fed a tiktok that was shot from the Cub Foods that I just left and there's 20+ ICE vehicles parked there now. They're taking people from work, from day care, from schools, from shopping centers.
Iceout.org tracks ice sightings. This is a screen shot with the date set to 12/1/2025.
And from today.
They have cut off SNAP and WIC benefits. Just for us. Not any other state, just Minnesota. They're saying it's because of fraud but I think it's because they hate that we use federal funds to give free breakfast and lunch to every public school student.
And this is breaking just now, 1/13/2026: the DOJ is trying to investigate Renee Good's widow. 4 people have resigned about it. (source). I don't even want to read the article to see what they're saying.
So that's a brief history.
Unicorn Riot is doing a lot of good reporting and they don't seem to have the spin that a lot of local news stations will have where they downplay everything. This article specifically goes into a lot of the specific instances of brutality.
It's also a rumor on TikTok that all of the videos of ICE and protests and the such and the like are being geo locked. So my feed is all footage of people being detained and talking about the "commuting" they're doing and what they're seeing but people outside of the state are not seeing it. So if you're also on that infernal app, try searching for Minneapolis or Minnesota and see what you see. I'm kind of curious if this is true. Because I've been living and breathing ICE and doomsday prepping content for a week. I'm sure those two topics aren't connected.
I don't really know what my goal with this post is. I'm tired. I'm in the first ring of suburbs, so it's been pretty quiet. But I have friends in south Minneapolis. And I'm worried for them. And I know it's a matter of time before my quiet pocket is affected. Because they're coming door to door.
Pay attention to Minnesota, I think an example is being made of us.
Update- Minnesota republicans are taking this opportunity to try to impeach Govt Waltz, who has already declared that he will not seek re-election in November because of Republican death threats against him and his family. Because of the "fraud". But actually because Waltz is speaking very plainly about what is happening here.
St Paul has gone to partial virtual learning for anyone who doesn't feel safe sending their kids to school.
Every school I know now has safety patrols.
The school districts are not mincing words about the clear and present threat. Everyone in the area is completely clear that we are under violent occupation.
Most of the white people ICE grab, are released within days, because ICE can't even keep track of who was grabbed by who over what. However, they are still subjected to beatings, gassing, having their home and car windows smashes, etc.
Local police are advising compliance with the blatant human rights violations and total lack of due process, because they are cowards.
Even conservative Minnesotans are balking at the total lack of due process and open violence against unresisting people for doing things like taking videos. I know a guy who was in his house recording ICE, and they smashed his home window, dragged him out over the broken glass, beat him while screaming slurs, smashed his phone, and detained for three days.
We need your help to spread the truth about what is going on. Find the videos and share them on any platform you have. Make noise about what's happening. Get your "don't tread on me" relatives whipped up about it if you can.
We need republicans to be afraid, otherwise ICE plans to be here for half a year attacking us.
If human rights can be revoked because Trump doesn't like your state, then they aren't rights anymore, they are favors dispensed by your king.
