Eyse: very very funny Rise fics, lotsa brotherly bonding, some angst, lots of Disaster Twins with a slight Donnie focus. pretty fluffy

MagicalSpaceDragon: I'm not gonna pretend to have read all of these, but the ones I have read are absolutely fire. most of them are very short and they range from very chill conversations to some of the most horrifying and upsetting stuff I've ever seen. I want to point you at the thesues, and series. it's genuinely horrifying and I actually cried which is not something I do when reading fics. serious cw for body horror

EternalGlitch: Rise. I kind of assume you've heard of this one before, but Like Father, Like Son is high-key the fic ever. it is the most kudosed in the fandom for a reason.

mad_and_thick_as_thieves: very Disaster Twins focused, generally canon compliant, lots of hurt/comfort.

ItzZaira: I believe AO3 canonised the 'cuddling and snuggling' tag for this author specifically. very fluffy, plenty of hurt/comfort. a lot of Mikey-centric fics. a solid mix of AO3 and 2012. the prose can be a little messy, but do not let that stop you from enjoying some of the sweetest fics I have ever found

a_platypus: ok there is only one fic here, but I can't not recommend Mutant Ninja Midlife Crisis. I just can't do that. it's funny it's heartbreaking it's got Bad Future Leo it has some of my all time favourite characterisation and one scene that was so funny that I can't stop thinking about it a year later.

you are under absolutely no obligation to read any of these, but if you do and you have thoughts, I would love to hear about them (dm's are cool, but I might take a bit to respond). sorry that they're almost all Rise but I am very specifically obsessed with that (and that so many of them are angsty...I can't help that I'm an angst girlie).

The Fourth Analysis of My New Family Is A Rat Who Mastered Ninjitsu and Three Turtle Brothers?

Donatello's depression and mental anguish

Damn, that isekai protag really can't seem to catch a break, can he?

It seems as though dealing with dying and becoming a mutant ninja turtle is a bit harder than it seems...

"My third thought: wow, does my family even exist here? …Do they even care that I died" (ch. 1)?

"A million things pass through my head. I don’t remember the faces of my old parents. I’ll never be able to go back to my old life. I’m dead" (ch. 2).

From the first two chapters, we can see Donnie struggles with the loss of his family and life, even though he also comments in the same breath that neither was good to him. He is quite literally haunted by his past, even mentioning that he is 'traumatized' now.

"I sigh all the time and he gives me weird looks, like he doesn’t know that I’m bored out of my mind and traumatized and just kind of rawdogging it all" (ch. 2).

Unfortunately, at this point Don is a baby, and babies aren't known for doing a lot.

"I guess you can say that even watching my rat-dad has grown dull" (ch. 3).

The mixture of trauma and boredom allows for a perfect space for depression spiraling to occur. And this ability to spiral is shown throughout the rest of the chapters to never fully leave him. The more space he has to think, the more he mentally doom-scrolls.

"Though, sometimes, it gets a little melancholy and it ends up being hard to escape that funk" (ch. 7).

"Why am I thinking of this stuff again? Ugh, I thought I had moved past it all. Did I ever exist here? All the questions and desires bubble just below the surface; I’m a volcano ready to burst. My mind never knows when to stop running in circles (obviously)" (ch. 8).

"The trauma I experienced from the beginning of my new story will always stick with me in some fashion, like a new, ugly, big scar. It’ll fade bit by bit as I age, I’m sure, however the average lifespan doesn’t allow the memories to blink away" (ch. 8).

"I feel my skin tighten and my eyes scan any room I’m in all the time now. I don’t want to die again; the first time sucked enough. Man, I just want to get some sleep" (ch. 14).

It's not completely clear yet if the depression is something he dealt with in his past life or not. We know he physically doom-scrolled, he didn't have any friends, and barely talked to his family. He, in his own words, "...wasted twenty-five years on nothing" (ch. 1).

Was it all caused by depression too? Or could there be something else that happened in his past life?
