ok so, I approached my local library with a proposal to donate a mural as a way to A: build portfolio/gain practical experience and B: give back to a beloved public institution. The director was very enthusiastic about it and i've been working on it since the beginning of March. Come with me as I endeavor to paint what is in all honesty an excessive amount of birds
I wanted the birds to look like they were actually in the space so first thing after doing the draft was to do a lighting study
after that I covered the walls in letters in lieu of a projector/vr headset bc i have neither of those :) Then i take a picture of the section of wall and superimpose the lineart over top of it so I can pencil in the lines
et voila
and that was a whole week on it's own so next comes the paintin' >:)
HEY SO I TESTED IT WITH THORN AND IT NEEDS BLOCKED BUT LOOK AT HIM !!!!
There’s a few things here that I’ll need to work on, some of my stitches got a little messed up and I’ll go over those like cross stitch later. Tension on the bottom half got a little too tight, but honestly for my first go at stranded Tunisian crochet I’m pretty pleased! We’ll see how blocking goes.

OK well I guess I'm just gonna track some progress on this project because I'm back at it again.
Here's the Corrie Helmet and my Commander Fox helmet. I just finished Fox and he turned out great, but Thorn is going to need to be redone because of the crazy size difference from my tension issues. Which is fine, I figured that would happen. That first go at Thorn was supposed to just be a test for the whole project anyway.
I'll yap more about tension and the size comparison under the cut. But like AH it's REAL!! I'm doing the project!!! Each time I finish a clone I'm literally so happy I love them.
SO, it had been a minute because I've really been enjoying knitting lately but I realized I still want to get this project done before the end of 2026 and it's April. So this week I was like "oh let me just do the another Corrie helmet for this row!"
And yeah, there are still some spots on this Corrie helmet where I totally used the wrong color to pull through, but I hadn't Tunisian crocheted since I finished Thorn so I'm cutting myself some slack. When I finished the Corrie though I realized the tension was SO much better! But Thorn was looking really tight and skinny in comparison.
WHICH IS OKAY, Thorn really was just the test to see if I wanted to tapestry crochet or Tunisian crochet this project! And I figured yeah he was a little tight at the bottom of the helmet maybe I could loosen up some of the ends on the back and get him closer to the Corrie!
Then I was like "man, it felt so good to finish that last helmet and it makes me so happy to work on this project! I should start Fox!"
And Fox turned out beautiful.
And Bigger than the Corrie Helmet.
So I thought Fox can't possibly be that much bigger than Thorn right he's only a little bigger than the Corrie Helmet!

THE DIFFERENCE IS SO WILD!! MORAL OF THE STORY TENSION AND PRACTICE ARE SO IMPORTANT!!
After I finished Thorn I also realized I didn't like the dark gray I had ordered, and that it really just looked like black so I that's updated on Fox too and I think you can at least tell a difference in person enough that I'd have done thorn again anyway just to update that.
TLDR: the Corrie helmets were "done" but I'm gonna redo Thorn and maybe the Corrie unless I can get it to stretch with some blocking. I'm still really happy with the project progress and I've been learning a lot about stranded Tunisian crochet.
