Flags of the funeral procession "Memento Mori" (19th-20th centuries)
ohhh my god I just fact-checked, Nolan actually DID cut the "Nobody" scene from his Odyssey movie. Mfer that is like cutting the Father reveal from Star Wars. Let me speak in a language you understand this is like not dressing Batman up in his suit. "It was not possible to work it in" the TikTok musical with a budget of $4 and a scratched Hamilton CD managed to work it in in SONG form, step up your FUCKING GAME
I got a free ticket to this movie and i have Thoughts (below the cut in case anyone??? Is worried about spoilers??)
#i went in with a very low bar and it pulled out a shovel via @cannot-kill-the-sun
Skip Letterboxd this is the only review I need
“It's not fair.” The little ghost kicks impotently at the chalk lines around her feet. “I ain't done nothing.”
I nod, setting down my chalk and spellbook. “It does sound like there might have been a bit of a misunderstanding.”
“She took against me, that's what happened,” the dead girl says with a scowl. She looks about fourteen, round faced and spotty, with whisps of brown hair peaking out from under her mob-cap. Her face and her crossed arms have a tell-tale bluish tinge to them. A cholera death.
“I been here for don't know how long and never gave any trouble. Nobody ever complained about me 'till her.”
…well, that's not strictly true.
Number 12, Barclay Street has been attracting rumours of haunting since the mid nineteenth century.
Sounds of faint singing and crying in the corridors at night. Cold spots. Doors that open and close by themselves. Animals acting strangely. Harmless, mid to low-level stuff, typical for a bored teenage poltergeist.
Still, pointing that out isn't likely to achieve much, and certainly the most recent complaints of blood running down the walls, screams in the dark and paralysing night terrors seem distinctly out of character.
The ghost toes the chalk again, more tentatively this time. It stays resolutely unbroken.
She could get out if she wanted to. I'm not one of those assholes who brings out their full arsenal of wards and sigils for a first meeting with a level 2 spectre. The summoning circle will keep her in one place for as long as I need her to talk, but it wouldn't hold for a moment if she really fought against it.
I take it as a good sign that she's still here. Pouting or not, she's clearly willing to work with me.
“None of the others could do this,” she says. “None of 'em even saw me.” She looks up. “Are you here to exise me?”
“Exorcise,” I say instinctively, and curse myself when she flinches. “Sorry, no, no! I don't exorcise people from their homes without good reason, not if they're happy where they are.”
“I was happy. Till she started calling in all them ghost hunters.”
Mrs Delaney had been quite persistent in her attempts to 'fix' her haunted house. Most of the people she found were charlatans, of course, but I'd still arranged an appointment as fast as I could once word reached me. It wouldn't have been long before she happened upon somebody with Talent, and unfortunately not everybody in this field knows how to behave like a professional.
“I think we might be able to help each other,” I say, careful to keep my voice calm and level.
“Don't see how. Not unless you can exorcise Her.”
“Not quite what I had in mind.” I pull out my phone and scroll through my photos. “You say that you're not the cause of the most recent incidents of paranormal activity?”
A pause. The ghost gnaws on her lip. I wait, patiently, keeping my body language open and nonthreatening. “I… I knocked her coffee cup over,” she admits at last. “She was being mean and talking on her telephone, saying I done all these things when I never did! So I decided to show her what I could do if I wanted.”
“Hmm.” The ghost eyes me nervously, as if expecting me to pull out a book, bell and candle and banish her on the spot.
“I only tipped it,” she adds. “I didn't break it or nothing!”
“You shouldn't have touched it at all,” I say sternly. “But… I can appreciate that you were frustrated, so let's say no more about it.”
The ghost looks relieved.
“My point is,” I continue, “if you weren't the one making blood rain from the ceiling or tormenting people in their sleep, then what was? There's no other ghosts on the property.” I find the picture I was looking for. “You can get anywhere around the house, right? Including behind the furniture and in the backs of cupboards?”
“Yes'm.”
I hold the phone up so that she can see the picture on the screen. “I'm going to let you go free in a moment, and I need you to see if you can find anything that looks like this.”
The ghost wrinkles her forehead. “What's that when it's at home?”
“Black mould,” I say, reaching out a foot to break the binding circle. “And I'm pretty sure it's the cause of this haunting.”
listen it's not that I think epic the musical is a perfect adaption of the odyssey but it was an impressive passion project that knew what it wanted to be and knew what people gravitated to in the original work and it put significant effort into conveying this through its unique medium and tone to the point that hundreds of other people felt compelled to put effort into their own artistic interpretations of that version of the story. and that's really cool! and yes I would be more critical if it was a 100 million dollar project made by a professional because what the fuck do you mean you're a world-famous director and you cut the my name is nobody scene are you goddamn serious
Setting everything else aside, I just need someone who loved the movie to explain one thing to me — if Odysseus was really traumatized so much by men's cruelty and inhumanity to man, why don't we see ONE SINGLE SIGN OF THAT IN HIS CHARACTERIZATION BEFORE THE BIG MONOLOGUE AT THE END???? NOT ONE SINGLE SIGN OF IT??? HE'S NO NICER TO CIRCE THAN THE REST OF HIS MEN, AND HE'S SURE AS SHIT DOESN'T FEEL THE CYCLOPS QUALIFIES FOR KINDNESS OF ANY KIND! YOU DON'T JUST GET TO DECIDE WHAT YOUR MOVIE IS ABOUT AT THE VERY END!!! YOU HAVE TO ACTUALLY SHOW US!!!!!
In 1960, Akira Kurosawa's 1954 movie Seven Samurai was adapted as a western called The Magnificent Seven. This adaptation kept the premise and shape of the original story, but adapted it to a different context and culture, keeping what worked in this new framing while changing the rest to fully take advantage of the difference, giving us a pair of movies that complete each other, showing how you can tell the same story interestingly thru entirely different lenses. Now imagine if, instead of doing that, they had just straight up remade Seven Samurai in English, under the same title, still set in Ancient Japan, but now with an all white cast except for one African-American and one Mexican-American actor, and made absolutely no effort to portray Japanese history or culture accurately, instead going off entirely from cartoonish clichés about East Asia in general, sanded down to be as neutral and inoffensive as possible, while insisting that you're going for a "realistic" aesthetics that amounts to make everything grey, boring and sterile clean. And when Japanese people inevitable complain about the result, you imply that they're being racist and are only angry because you included two persons of color in your 95% white European cast. You argue that this story is a fantasy and not actual history, so historical accuracy doesn't matter and you don't want it to constrain your strong artistic innovative vision, and it would be boring and confusing to the audience anyway, and you argue that this is a universal story that belongs to everyone and that everyone identifies with and Japanese people don't have any special claim on it. This post is about Nolan's Odyssey.
Things I liked about the Nodyssey (spoilers) :
Circe's magic. So creepy. So nasty. 10/10
Scene inside Trojan horse, surprisingly intense & gross
Elliot Page covered in mud (acting was stellar)
Lupita Nyong'o
Anne Hathaway gets to yell & portray a complicated character
Athena (if she even exists lol) takes the form of a random casualty of war (harkens back to "don't look for gods in people" which is fun) JUST WISH THE RANDOM CASUALTY WASNT YOU KNOW ZENDAYA
... That's it
Nolan's Odyssey is mid
armand is such a fucking character, like what if a subby twink was ancient + evil
feminist retelling shoulsnt be the woman does some girlboss shit femist retelling is she does the same stuff except u actually give a shit abt her perspective and thoughts and feelings as a human being this time

Week 1 - 10 in my weekly poster series for 2026
As some of you might recall from this essay, I spent the latter half of 2025 working on a comic for the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum in Savannah, Georgia. Tania Sammons, a curator at the museum who had previously licensed my guide to sailors’ tattoos for a show, wrote to me with an irresistible pitch: four cartoonists would be hired, assigned a vessel from the museum's extensive collection of models, then given six months to produce a short comic for publication in an anthology alongside an accompanying museum display.
How could I say no?
My original brief was to research the Anne, the ship that brought the first colonists to Georgia, but in the aftermath of my dad's death the story took off in directions I couldn't have foreseen.
I'm releasing the whole comic online to coincide with the opening of Drawn to the Sea, the exhibition in Savannah. If you're in the area this week (or anytime over the next nine months!) you can stop in and see all the amazing work that came from myself and fellow artists Avery Hick, Rich King, and Sharon Norwood. Details about the museum show are here.
In the meantime, here's a very personal comic.
Content Warning: this piece deals with suicide and parental mortality. Readers with trypophobia may want to skip pages 14 and 15.
Thanks for reading <3
Evening reblog! Many thanks to everyone who shared such thoughtful feedback on this one 💛
want to help? you can!
Thank you to everyone who has been sending such kind messages, I promise I really do read them all, even if I can't reply, but while these messages are wonderful (and really. I mean it. just the nicest and most heartfelt things I've ever seen) the sad fact is they don't change my situation. But you can change it. You can help me.
If you know my situation, if you want to help me, please write to Glitch Productions. They are the only people who can, and I believe, might, be able and willing to save me. SMG4 has ignored me, even through a legal letter. I have no hope that they will do otherwise, but Glitch are a different case and I think they just genuinely don't know I exist. I have sent them a message, to no reply, but more messages means more of a chance they will notice. IF you are on twitter please message that way, I closed my account there years ago, and please be polite: I am not asking for hate, even if I've received it.
Even a short message will help. I need numbers, I need voices. My own voice is being drowned out, but you can speak for me as well.
For some points on the plagiarism under the read more (what I collected/organized while building up an email to send):
1) TIMELINE RGB was created long before, over a decade before Mr. Puzzles first debuted. (*RGB's first appearance may have been 2011, was a little iffy on that)
2) UNDENIABLY UNCANNY RESEMBLANCE The number of traits, some uniquely specific to and representative of RGB's design, that are copied in Mr. Puzzles design are too many to be chalked up to 'just a coincidence'
Especially when you look at the designs of all of the other TV head characters out there - I collected as many as I could find (though I'm sure there's more) and none of them come even close to sharing the number of similarities that these two do.
3) TV MODEL AND DESIGN CHOICES While looking up references for older TVs, I found that for the exact TV they're based on (small retro box TV with knobs in the upper right of the TV and an antenna) most of the references didn't have a vent on the side of them like RGB and Mr. Puzzles do.
I looked up 4 different reference terms, and still had to scroll a while before I found one that matched exactly (above collection just a general sample/example of types of TVs I found). Unless my browsers are wigging out, either the pictures that would come up for these kinds of TVs were different in 2023, or this exact combination of features are just not very common for this style of TV. If that's the case, it may be a bit strange to design a character with those features together.
Here's where that distinction is important: Mr. Puzzles as a character doesn't have much of a reason to go with this design over other styles of similar TVs. But RGB does. The vents on the sides of RGB's head aren't just an aesthetic choice - they're included as a legitimately integral part of the story-line (Negative RGB). The same can be said for a number of other choices Modmad has made, down to individual items of clothing, that show just how much thought and intention and consideration went into every aspect of RGB's design.
Which makes it that much more frustrating to see him get plagiarized in such a careless manner by people who don't even seem to put much care into their own character (common criticism I've read that SMG4 fans have had about Mr. Puzzles and his 'arc').
4) OTHER PEOPLE, EVEN THOSE WHO HADN'T HEARD ABOUT THE SITUATION FROM MOD, NOTICED This has been noted by fans of both series since Mr. Puzzles first came out.
Some people may have found more points than this, but these are what I stumbled upon. Hopefully helps bring a little more context to the situation.
reblogging this version because. yeah.
yeah.
just to update that nobody from any of the relevant parties has got back to me or made any statement. please reblog this version, as @timmyreads has compiled an extremely comprehensive explanation and evidence of the theft; at first I just wanted to be left alone, but it's really not enough. every time I see Mr Puzzle or even read his name I feel physically sick, it's hard for me to type it even now. I feel violated in every way, and I need help. I can't save myself, I have tried every single avenue available. At this point I need to be saved.
For those saying please/just keep making TPoH anyway, it's not that simple: I can't. My mind and heart are broken. The story itself has stopped communicating with me. I cannot make it any more, not if this situation doesn't change, and that loss of the story scares me more than anything else in the world.
the thing about the one piece adaptation is that it doesn’t take itself seriously in the sense of trying to make things more realistic or grounded or grimdark but it DOES take itself seriously in the sense of everyone putting their whole pussy into treating cwazy hair stupid weapon silly name world as the reality the characters are in and one that has real emotional stakes and it kind of rules
Nami looks at Luffy like 🥰 and at Sanji like 🥰 and even at Zoro like 🥰 occasionally, but not usopp, but I don't judge her for that he still needs time to get to 🥰 status we'll get there
Anyway Nami loves her boys
can we talk about how utterly terrifying Wapols powers looked? the whole lead up I was like "idk I remember this being kind of silly in the manga" and then he sTARTED DISGORGING HIS OWN SOLDIERS WHAT THE FUCK
