surely this is a sign that there’s nothing in particular wrong with the atmosphere right now

this is another thing that drives me insane about the way people talk about sebastian: we do not give that boy nearly enough credit for who he is BEFORE the dark magic spiral. because early-game sebastian is not some ominous little manipulator lurking around hogwarts waiting for an opportunity to exploit mc's ancient magic. he's a genuinely sweet, funny, brave, enthusiastic kid who seems to sincerely LIKE mc almost immediately, and the game goes out of its way to show us that.

if mc is slytherin, sebastian meets them in the common room on their very first night. then a few days later mc absolutely whoops his ass in hecat's class, and what does this supposedly egotistical, calculating future supervillain do? he is GENUINELY IMPRESSED. he compliments mc. he isn't bitter that the brand-new fifth year just beat him in front of everyone. he's basically like holy shit, you're GOOD. and then if mc chooses him to go to hogsmeade, this boy lights up like a fucking christmas tree. “then i shall be the very best of guides!” arms out, huge smile, absolutely delighted that mc picked him. “remember, have fun! it's hogsmeade!” this is apparently the terrifying sociopath i keep hearing about.

and then they fight the troll TOGETHER, and afterward sebastian goes around telling people how mc took it down while giving himself basically no credit for helping. he is PROUD of them. this is actually a recurring thing with sebastian: he likes seeing mc succeed. mc beats him in a duel? he's impressed. mc does something extraordinary? he's excited about it. they fight something together? he's bragging about mc afterward. where exactly is the threatened ego? where is the resentment? where is the sinister calculation? sometimes a fifteen-year-old boy thinks his new friend is really fucking cool. groundbreaking concept, apparently.

and THEN he realizes rookwood is after mc. suddenly he's worried. when rookwood barges into the three broomsticks threatening them, sebastian gets off his stool, moves around mc and pulls out his wand. he doesn't know what rookwood is about to do. that's a dangerous adult wizard standing there threatening his new friend, and sebastian's immediate response is apparently “well, guess we're fighting this grown man in a pub.”

THAT is characterization too.

sebastian is reckless, yes. sebastian becomes obsessive, yes. sebastian eventually lies, rationalizes terrible decisions and crosses lines he never should have crossed. nobody has to erase any of that.

but sebastian is ALSO brave. he's loyal. he's warm. he's funny. he's generous with praise. he's protective. he's earnest as hell underneath all that cocky little slytherin swagger. and those qualities don't magically stop being real because we know where his story eventually goes.

in fact, THEY'RE WHY HIS STORY WORKS.

because the tragedy isn't that sebastian was secretly horrible the entire time and finally revealed his true nature. the tragedy is watching genuinely good qualities in a complicated kid become twisted by desperation. bravery becomes recklessness. determination becomes obsession. loyalty becomes an inability to let go. his refusal to abandon someone he loves becomes his refusal to accept that there may be things he cannot fix.

you cannot take sebastian at his absolute worst and use that version of him as a decoder ring for every interaction he had before it. that's not an arc. that's deciding the verdict first and retroactively rewriting the evidence.

early sebastian matters. the boy who compliments mc after losing to them matters. the boy who is visibly delighted that mc chose him for hogsmeade matters. the boy reminding mc to have fun matters. the boy bragging about mc defeating the troll while barely mentioning his own contribution matters. the boy who sees rookwood threatening his new friend and immediately gets up with his wand drawn MATTERS.

talk all the shit you want about sebastian's later behavior. there's plenty to criticize.

but that boy is brave. that boy is loyal. that boy cares about his people.

and i'm not deleting those parts of his characterization just because acknowledging them makes his downfall more complicated.

that's the fucking point.

howdy, friends! i'm so excited to reveal a project that has been in the works since march. i'd been floating the idea around to a few people, but the time has come for me to actually make it real. as most of you know, i love to play barbies with my ocs & their friends--there's nothing like realizing two characters are perfect, or toxic, for each other to really get the creative juices flowing. we have no shortage of oc ships, and i'm always excited to make more.

since i've been a part of this lovely fandom--for like, what, almost a year now?--i've gotten to befriend so many of you kind folks and get to know your ocs. so, it makes sense to take all of that love and shove it into a big event that celebrates the role shipping plays in our hogleg community. hence: shiptember. not the most original idea, i'm sure, but just a silly thing to bring everyone together.

-ai content should not be used for the prompts in this event, and i can't/won't endorse anything that includes it. you're all such creative people, and i'm excited to see how you put your own personal spin on each day--without going to chatgpt.

-since shipping is a two-way street, please only include ships where you've gotten explicit permission from a creator to use their character(s). i've made forms you can fill out to offer your oc(s) to be used in ships, as there shouldn't be any pressure for someone to join in on the event. if someone hasn't filled out one of those forms, please reach out to them before using their character(s). if you'd like to offer your oc, but not create any content, that's fine! this is all about supporting community members.

-you doesn't have to be limited to oc x oc ships, or even pairings with only two characters. all sorts of relationships can be used for the prompts, whether it's crackships, polyships, or friendships. npcs can be included, but i mostly want to encourage interactions with different ocs.

-prompts are there to help, not dictate what you contribute. each day is themed with different tropes, but feel free to interpret them as you wish. each take on 'hurt/comfort' or 'meet cute' will be unique, especially depending on the ships used. you don't have to do something for each day, and it's absolutely okay to only contribute a few prompts or just reblog your friends' work.

-creativity is encouraged! screenshots, drawings, playlists, posters, drabbles... there's so much you can do with the themes. if you just want to answer the prompt questions in a text post, great! if you're inspired to make something, also great! this event is open to everyone, even if you don't think you're an artist or writer.

Realised that I haven't drawn him for *looks at the calendar* 28 DAYS????🫪 Poor silly little guy.

(The moment MC goes, "You're either with me, or we part ways", and he does a complete 180° is so funny to me. I mean, the guy is desperate and very reliant on our help; it's understandable, but still...)

Anyway, I don't think Sebastian is the type of guy who would abuse his puppy-dog eyes. I'm not even sure if he's aware of them. Annie, on the other hand, would absolutely relish his kicked puppy attitude
