Finally back from my trip!! Here’s some airport doodles (I started reading Dawn of Yangchen on the plane) ✈️

I was rereading the Sparrowbones game chapters in The Legacy of Yangchen and got up to the part where Kavik tells Yangchen that Iwashi is cheating and asks her to help him reraise the stakes as high as they can to make Iwashi lose. And then the following happens:

Kavik took Yangchen’s hand. “I’ve said I hated Bin-Er in the past, and maybe that’s still true. But it’s my city whether I like it or not, and I’m not going to let its people be robbed by a thief who doesn’t even need the money. Didn’t you tell me once that we have to fight for complete strangers as we do for our friends?”

It wasn’t like him to make grand gestures. Yangchen half-heartedly tried to pull her arm back, but his grip remained firm. Kavik gently spread her fingers and put them on his neck, over his pulse. His heartbeat was as slow and steady as the changing of the seasons.

It made me realise a couple things:

1) Kavik does has feelings for Yangchen and is displaying them here, and

2) Yangchen doesn’t understand or know how to react to this change in Kavik’s behaviour, and is afraid/unnerved/distrustful. We see something similar near the end of the book, when Kavik agrees to go with Yangchen to the Spirit Oasis. Kavik does it because he wants to help her, but when he softly tells her he’s not doing it out of compulsion Yangchen is distrustful of his motivation at first because she doesn’t recognise that side of him that’s he showing her. It’s only when he gets annoyed at her that she finally accepts that he’s helping her out of his own free will.

Basically, Yangchen doesn’t seem to really process or understand relationships or emotions the same way other people do, and it really shows when she’s interacting with or thinking about Kavik.

Maybe it’s because of her upbringing in the Western Air Temple, or her involvement in the spying/politics game, but it’s a very fascinating part of her character.

This is a direct continuation of that first avatar post since I heard all those comments about people wanting the other avatars, Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk, and Yangchen, and I heard all their stories. They make me emotional, and I want so badly for them to be happy, especially Kuruk cause he was robbed and I love his story and want to explore it more.
