ā³ Character Positivity - Mikasa AckermanĀ ā§
Eren the Slave
Thereās a common misconception in the fandom that Erenās turn in the final arc from hero to antagonist is due to character development. This is from a belief that Eren as a character, believes in freedom and therefore has been carrying that idea on his shoulders the entire time.Ā
Thereās a confusion between the narrative which Isayama sets up for Eren which is told from a third point of view and therefore is objective, and Erenās own personal narrative which is composed of Erenās own personal thoughts and feelings. Basically in any story these two things will coexist and push and pull against each other, narrative the way the world sees the character and reacts to them and personal narrative the way the character sees themselves. Erenās conception of himself is a one man army fighting for the freedom, and willing to become the enemy of the whole world in order to do it but just because a character believes that about themselves does not necessarily mean that it is true.Ā
The following post is a discussion of Narrative Identity that is a theory that postulates individuals for an identiy by integrating their life experiences into an internalize,d evolving story of the self that provides the individual with a sense of unity and purpose in life. The narrative is a story, it has characters, episodes, imagery, a setting, plots and themes which means the events taking place in it have to have meaning.Ā
Eren is a slave of many things, including narrative, and because of his own personal narrative he cannot change. Eren isnāt a character who has changed, moreas heās a character weāve had our perspective of him change as the story progresses and widens it perspective which is still development. All character development requires some kind of change or movement on the characterās part, but it doesnāt mean their characters themselves have to change, because the readerās perspective on them can be what develops instead.Ā
So underneath the cut: Erenās current development is about his failure to change, which makes him the least free character in the manga. I suggest reading my Eren and Reiner meta as a precursor to this.Ā

One point that really stood out to me is howā¦..Eren has always had EXACTLY what his major foils in the series want.
Eren has been, since the moment of his birth, loved unconditionally and supported by many people.Ā
Zeke, Historia, and Reiner have all experienced what being raised for a purpose actually means. All of them were shaped and ultimately broken by a lack of a loving, supportive environment. Each of them has gone to extremes in their desperation to be loved by others.Ā
Each of them, in turn, obsessed over some ideal connection. Zeke wanted a younger brother that he could save, that would understand him. Reiner wanted first to reunite his parents so they could be a happy family, then traded that for trying to play the Perfect Big Brother to everyone. Historia madeĀ āKristaā to be the perfect girl everyone would adore.
Meanwhile, Eren has always had that. And chosen to push it away, time and again. To view it as not valuable, because he wants a destiny as someone strong enough to do whatever he wanted.
Eren cares about Mikasa and Armin so much that he made their names travel through space and time and even remembers them from an alternate reality, and yet thereās people out there thinking he doesnāt give a fuck about them because of chapter 112 bs (or more like, thinking he doesnāt care that much about them anymore)
