My friend Peanut was diagnosed with Leukemia last year. He’s only 18. He missed a good chunk of school and he had to quit his job which he loved. He’s in remission now, but he was recently re-hospitalized for multiple bacterial infections. He was just told that he has to spend the next six weeks (including Christmas) at children’s hospital because of it. He’s been kept in isolation because his latest problems were contagious, and any visitors have to wear full suits, masks, and gloves in order to see him. During the Canucks annual visit to BCCH, Daniel Sedin suited up and spent a good chunk of time chatting with my friend. Danny was even told at one point to move on but said he needed a few more minutes. Peanut was so touched, all he wanted was for Danny to sign his hat, but he gave me so much more. I couldn’t be happier knowing that my little buddy was given a chance to smile during such a shitty time. this is what Christmas is about :)

Bieksa was yelling at the cameraman to show some class as the cameraman was filming a close-up of Daniel Sedin, who was injured and being prepared to be taken away on a stretcher. The cameraman didn’t move, so Bieksa took it upon himself to stand right in front of the camera so that Daniel wouldn’t be in the shot. The crowd knew exactly what was going on and cheered Bieksa on.

Four years ago, the world lost an entire hockey team in an airplane crash. Four years ago, heaven gained many hockey playing angels. Rest in peace.

let me tell you a story about this. look at the top row, the first guy on the left. next to the coaches. the player with the floppy hair and the goofy smile. his name was robert dietrich, and he gave me one of the best hockey experiences of my life.

okay. due to some medical issues of mine, ice skating isn’t really feasible for me. i walk like any normal person, but ice skating is difficult for me because i have trouble balancing on ice. robert was a player for my city’s american hockey league team when i first got into hockey in 2007. one day, they had an event where you could go onto the ice after a game and go skating. i put on my skates, went out onto the ice… and stood there with complete envy of the people and players all around me who could do what i could not: skate with ease.

robert didn’t speak very good english. maybe none at all. but he noticed me, standing there with quiet embarrassment, and you know what he did? he held out a hand, and started pulling me around on the ice. this didn’t work very well, so he tried another tactic.

oh yeah. you know what he did? he scooped me up onto his back and carried me while he skated around that ice, joyfully laughing and speaking to me in a language i didn’t understand. he took what could’ve been a night of bitterness for me and made it into something beautiful.

there are a pair of figure skates i used exactly once, on that night, signed by a hockey player named robert dietrich. i will never, ever forget what he did for me. rest in peace, buddy. thank you for everything.
