it really is all in the wrist... writing. drawing. guitar. masturbating. et cetera...
Restful sleep?
Benjamin nearly snorted at that. "I'm afraid I'd need far more than the featherbed jig to bring about sleep," he muttered. "War is distracting...or should I say, haunting. It's difficult to find rest when there's so much on one's plate."
Patience's voice grew almost sing-song as she spoke of other talents, and peering back at her over his shoulder, Benjamin's face warmed at her candor. He didn't dare ask -- especially since he didn't truly wish to know -- yet he managed to reply, "I should like to see your sculptures, if it isn't too much trouble. We rarely have any room for art in camp, so it would be a nice reprieve to gaze upon something beyond my canvas walls."
Patience was certainly unique in more ways than one. Although she pled forgiveness for boasting, Benjamin found her assurance rather charming.
"No need," he promised. "Your tale is fascinating...very fortunate, in fact. We blackguards need to stick together, lest we go mad with the responsibility, so truly, I don't mind at all."
Patience surprised him with a kiss to the cheek -- certainly not a perfunctory gesture -- and flushing a brilliant primrose, Benjamin promptly averted his eyes, his pulse stuttering in his throat as she re-adjusted her sheet.
"I wouldn't intend to marry for advantage," he softly denied, his gaze still lowered. "I wish to marry for love, and very little else."
Patience's talk of children intrigued him, and lifting his head, Benjamin asked, "Children? How many do you have? Before the war, I was a schoolteacher, so I have a particular fondness for children."
A look of regret twisted his face, and he was quick to add, "I'm sorry about your husband. The unfortunate part of life is that it's so easy to lose...and now so, far more than ever. War makes it all the more evident how precious our lives truly are."
Patience remained oddly silent throughout this exchange. She shifted about behind him, and Benjamin recognized the sound of rustling garments. He kept his gaze trained firmly on a rolltop desk, not wishing to invade her privacy. Or at least, any more than he already had.
"I hope you will take no offense to this, but I am most certain you've not had a skilled dance partner yet, if you've had any at all. I will grant you war is Hellish, but I truly believe most decent tumbles will put you neat as a ninepence, as far as sleep goes. I would be more than willing to demonstrate sometime~â.
His request to see some of her works gave her even more pride. Any chance to enrich someone with her creations was a thrill. It helped that she could tell her lack of modesty was still affecting him greatly. "I would be delighted to show you all I've got~" Alright, so she couldn't resist teasing just a bit more. "I've just put some of my works in progress in the tool shed of a good friend who lives a few towns over, for safe keeping. If you get any free time, I could show you in the next few days. I may be here in camp for a spell".
It appeared to Patience that Benjamin's nature was a bit soft, for a soldier. She had yet to see him in action on a battlefield, and prayed she would never find herself in that dangerous of a position, but she had heard he was a Reverend's son. That could explain why he was so anxious around her rather than attempting a round of clicket as many other men would. He had come in and seen her fully n.ude, limbs spread open like a fowl stripped of feathers for cooking. Others might have stared, or at least snuck a few peeks, gentleman or not. Patience could tell that Ben wasn't acting like a gentleman. He was one, and she found she admired him for it.
"Your tale is fascinating... very fortunate, in fact. We blackguards need to stick together, lest we go mad with the responsibility, so truly, I don't mind at all".
"I agree, wholeheartedly, but I'm afraid most of my tales are much less harrowing. Most are downright boring. The rest are... how shall I put this delicately for you?" She paused a moment in thought. "They involved a spot of dancing here and there, shall we say?". Some men could be easy enough to manipulate, once she found out what sort of man they were. Most enjoyed a go of amorous congress. In her travels, Patience had picked up a helpful trick or two for such occasions from a trollop in France, and even a never-to-be-named royal. She wasn't afraid to surround herself with people of any class, especially if they proved to be useful. Patience wondered what she could get out of Ben with just a bit of harmless teasing like this. Amusement, if nothing else.
As much as she would love to test Benjamin's big... brain for knowledge of the female anatomy, the kiss to his cheek had been almost entirely chaste and she hadn't meant for it to lead anywhere. His rosy face was more than worth a little peck. She smirked as she noticed his briefly wandering gaze, however unintentional it had been, as she fixed the blanket.
"I wouldn't intend to marry for advantage," he softly denied, his gaze still lowered. "I wish to marry for love, and very little else."
Her features softened at that. "Then I wish you all the best. May you build a lasting and fulfilling love, Benjamin," she murmured, meant as a true blessing.
A glow of warmth arose in her at the thought of her children. "We had three: Joseph, Elizabeth, and Phoebe. Joseph and Phoebe are artists, like me," she began to gush, a grin spreading across her cheeks. "Joseph has even done portraits of General Washington and Dr. Franklin, if you can believe it!" Her own ego was quickly brushed aside by the pride and love she felt for her kids. It fluttered brilliantly in her chest like the flame within the oil lamp on her desk. There may have been long stretches of time when she couldn't see them, but she made a point to visit her beloved children every time she was home. "I would have liked to see you teach. It's a much more peaceful profession, though not without its own battles". Ben's demeanor would suit a teaching occupation, and he had clearly proven himself enough of a leader to be in charge of the 2nd Light Dragoons. It was a shame the war for independence had become necessary and cut his teaching career so short.
"The unfortunate part of life is that it's so easy to lose...and now so, far more than ever. War makes it all the more evident how precious our lives truly are."
Patience was still listening as she slipped on her shift and a bed jacket. The night air slithering through every crevasse of her tent was enough reason for some layers of modesty. "It's safe to turn around now. You know, you say that war shows us the value of our lives, but you have to remember to live. Rage and ruin can easily turn us away from all the good still present on God's green earth". A few paces in Ben's direction and she was leaning a hand and hip against said rolltop desk. "Don't let this war consume you, and take up all of your thoughts. You really ought set aside time every day to relax and also to get some sleep, if you can. As pleased as I am to have made your acquaintance, I think it's best we get on to bed. We can discuss more at the debriefing. Where and when is it? Thatâs what you originally came here for, if I recall".

"An angel?" Benjamin asked, regarding her with a slight quiver of amusement in his smile. "Or do you perhaps mean devil? There must be a differing vantage point, after all...and I sincerely doubt this would be the path my guardian angel would advise."
Briefly, he wondered if he might have offended her. It was not his intention to tease or demean Patience in any way; despite his embarrassment, he did respect her a great deal, and wished to welcome her as a fellow member of the team. Yet in his own bumbling fashion, it would seem he'd already mucked everything up.
Given their conversation, Benjamin felt a nettled heat creeping beneath his collar at her "naturally talented hands" comment. It would not do to contemplate what she meant by that, and clearing his throat, he replied instead, "But of course, madam. Always."
It was unsurprising to hear of the king's volatile temperament, though Patience's off-hand remark about how she acquired such intelligence made him blink, baffled. She truly had no shame, and in a manner of speaking, he almost envied that. As a reverend's son, he'd had to uphold certain standards his entire life, so just this once, perhaps it would feel good to...what, exactly?
Shaking his head, Benjamin tried to speak, but then Patience moved in closer and started rubbing at his shoulders, the unexpected massage making him go limp as the tension slowly abated. He hated how pleasurable it felt -- how good and welcoming it was to be touched by another, and a complete stranger, at that. Benjamin hadn't realized how badly he'd missed touch and connection until her hands fell upon his back and shoulders.
âYou really are excessively rigid, dear," she scolded. "I know youâre a soldier, but if you donât learn to let yourself relax, your stress is whatâs going to kill youâ.
Benjamin managed a wan smile. "So I've been told," he replied. "My friends...they often berate me for putting work over myself. But the way I see it, I'll have plenty of time to relax once the war is won."
To his surprise, Patience's hands slid down to his hips, causing him to jerk at the unexpected touch. Her breath warmed the curve of his neck and he swallowed, his face burning as he forced himself to keep his focus straight ahead.
"If...i-if I love my future wife, will that not be enough?" Benjamin weakly allowed. "If we are emotionally compatible, surely, the rest will fall into place?"
To not be wholly, intrinsically bound made little sense to him, yet a part of him was genuinely curious by what this strange woman had to say.
âSome might regard my ways of expressing myself and enjoying life as devilish,â she giggled, âbut I assure you dear Benjamin, I mean no harm. Intimacy can be beneficial in other ways, after all. Connections, reinvigoration, reducing stress and aiding one in finding restful sleep. You appear to need all of those things, by my observationâ.
He need not worry about offending her. People said all sorts of things to her, and about her. She was immune to gossip and many insults. She didnât find anything he said to be offensive anyway, in spite of her Quaker background. If one took life too seriously, they would fall ill with ease.
âSculpting the way I do is a wonderful distraction. Nobody suspects someone everyone is already looking at. Drawing attention to myself is too conspicuous to be suspicious, you see. I have used other talents to glean information and keep mouths shut,â she practically purred as she had slunk up behind him, before having massaged his shoulders.
âI got lucky. While everyone was busy dealing with a fit of the Kingâs madness, I was able to slip an important document under a table and later into my dress. I suspect the bust that contains it now will be here soon. This will all be in the debriefing in the morning, but you are the current head of intelligence, so I see no reason not to tell you. Do forgive me if I boast. I donât get to talk about these things often, as you can imagineâ.
The way his body seemed to deflate under her careful ministrations gave her ego an even bigger boost. Patience was delighted at the fact that he didnât pull away. She wondered how much more she could get away with, which lead to her hands on his hips.
With her hands still situated on Benjaminâs hips, she chuckled softly. Then kissed one of his red cheeks before backing away from him entirely and adjusting her blanket. It had slid halfway down her bosom from so much movement.
âItâs entirely possible, yes. Plenty of couples have managed well enough over the span of humanityâs existence, even without love as the basis of their marriage. Communication, trust and compromise are all important, perhaps even more so than loving your spouse. We do still marry for advantage rather than for love, after allâ.
Her face twisted in disgust, which he wouldnât likely see now that she had backed up to her bed again. âIf you can marry for love, I hope you do, or at the very least that you fall in love with her after the fact. I got lucky, in that regard, and even had children before Joseph perished. Still, the more you learn about your intended and yourself, the better off you will be, Benjaminâ.
Her tone had steadily become more and more serious. She was no longer the teasing imp. She had known women who married for advantages for their families and for themselves, and they had been unhappy in one way or another. She had loved Joseph, but the sense of freedom she had gained after ââtil death do you partâ was quite satisfying. She could go nearly anywhere and do so many things without caring as much. Not that sheâd been chastised by her husband before his parting.
Perhaps it had more to do with her getting older, and not caring about other people scolding her, since it wouldnât affect his reputation any longer. While she sat on the edge of her bed, she freed herself from her makeshift toga dress and bent over to begin gathering at least a nightgown to toss on. She had embarrassed Ben enough for tonight.

Benjamin nearly withdrew his hands upon hearing her request. Already, he could feel his blush traveling up to the tips of his ears, causing him to swallow. "You mean...y-you wish to speak as familiars?"
Although it wasn't uncommon, per se, he had never been asked by a woman to address them by their Christian name, and the thought flustered him since any passersby might assume the worst. Widow or not, he still felt it his duty to protect her reputation.
Wincing, he amended, "If you insist, madam. You may call me..." He hesitated, unsure of how free with propriety he should succumb, before ultimately settling on, "Whatever you wish."
From behind his faux blindfold, he could hear her insisting, "I prefer to be known as an individual. Hopefully, I can convince others to also go on a first name basis and dispense with all this distancing. We are supposed trust each other.â
"Oh...true enough," Benjamin stammered. It wasn't as if he could entirely argue with that, though it would still take some getting used to.
âA professional female blackguard?â Patience echoed, chuckling. âI am simply a concerned citizen and artist.â
"You shouldn't sell yourself short," Benjamin replied. Turning his head slightly, he sensed her walking somewhere behind him, and a sting of unrest swelled between his ribs. "Everything Mr. Sackett has told me is nothing short of remarkable...your scheme with the bust of King George was genius, if you don't mind my saying so. To uphold such secrecy, and under the very sight of the king, no less, must have been quite difficult," he commended. "I can scarcely think of any man who could achieve what you did."
Patience tutted, her lips sliding up near his ear. âYou need not hide your eyes. Itâs all Godâs creation that you saw,â she whispered. Her hand fell to his shoulder, and Benjamin jerked, so startled that he dropped his hands on impulse.
Mouth dry, he deflected, "I was just...I-I mean, yes, it's very true that we as a species learned shame because of the serpent in the Garden, but...but I still don't...i-is it not wrong to behold another before marriage?"
Art was one thing, yes, but this wasn't a simple portrait or statue. It felt wrong to gaze upon Patience, and so he kept his eyes pointed down at the floor, catching sight of the blanket she'd wrapped around her slender form akin to a toga. At least she was no longer completely bare, but there was still enough skin to make him flush a deep, searing pink.
The darkening pink of his skin complimented the blue hue of his uniform, and Patience was tempted to have him sit down right there to be painted, except she had run out of most of her art supplies. If Ben was so easily flustered like this, she could always try again another day. Her brow raised.
âWhatever I wish? You may not want to be so generous. I can think of quite a few titles to choose from, Benjamin~â. She warned, and then paused to observe the effect. âI can understand growing up with certain ideas of how things are. Perhaps, I am here to be a little angel on your shoulder, influencing you to open up to a new worldâ. What was so wrong with being friendly? It was no wonder people fought each other so much, when it was so easy to offend someone by breaking rules from a tediously extensive list.
âI can scarcely think of any man who could achieve what you did."
Though she enjoyed his flattery immensely, she knew better than to take all the credit. It wouldnât do to get a swelled head. âItâs kind of you to say so. Using my naturally talented hands proved to be quite usefulâ. Alright. So she did have a slight ego. Her heart swelled with pride, knowing she had a hand in finding valuable information and sending it where it was needed most. It was only unfortunate that circumstances hadnât allowed her to take on her person.
âHowever, old Georgie has an affliction of the mind that diverted everyoneâs attention. It was⌠intense. Frightful even. I actually feel bad for the people who work closely with him. Hardly anyone paid attention to me, except to invite me to more⌠private gatherings while the issue was being sortedâ. She decided to spare him the details of her promiscuity, but she had no doubt Washingtonâs head of intelligence could infer her meaning, despite his clear lack of experience.
Instead of stepping away when he jerked at her touch, she reached up to place both hands on his shoulders, giving them a squeeze and kneading the muscles there for a moment. âYou really are excessively rigid, dear. I know youâre a soldier, but if you donât learn to let yourself relax, your stress is whatâs going to kill youâ. Her blanket was just tight enough under her arms to keep from falling as she moved, but anything could happen. Patience was tempted to let it slip on purpose.
âIs it not wrong to behold another before marriage?"
Patience smirked, dropping her hands to his hips to toy with him more. Her voice became silk as she kept her lips near his neck. âAt the risk of sounding like a blasphemer, itâs my belief that knowing another person more intimately before marriage is one way to be certain of your compatibility. Would you prefer to be surprised by a difference in desires, after already promising the rest of your life to your partner?â
