    “hey,” roxy says, voice soft and yet firm, “stop that. you couldn’t have known and i won’t have you giving yourself a hard time about it.” she nods to the bandaged gash in anne’s leg. “you’ve had enough punishment as it is.” she tucks some hair behind the other agent’s ear, letting her thumb brush across an elegant cheekbone. “come lie down, darling. all right? we don’t have to talk. just come be with me for a while.” roxy knows how hard anne is on herself because she’s the same way. but it’s easier to look out for your loved one than it is to look out for yourself. her hands move to brush up and down the dark-haired woman’s shoulders. “come on.”

“you’re full of shit,” he’s snarling before he can stop himself, ears ringing. he doesn’t know if it’s from the knock against the wall, or if it’s because of the blood rushing to his ears. he doesn’t know what to do with himself; unable to stop the sudden fury that washes over him. that boils up inside of him. “you fuckin’ knew that i was fine – y’ may have not known where i was, but you of all fuckin’ people know that i would’ve been fine,” he doesn’t have to answer to her. if anyone has a problem with it, then merlin would tell him. if merlin had noticed that he’d gone missing – and of course, he would have – and didn’t say anything, then he had gotten away with it. that meant it wasn’t roxy’s priority to try and yell at him until one of them went red in the face. “just ‘cause none of you have someone t’ go home to, don’t mean that i have to pretend that i don’t! i didn’t say shit because i knew— i fuckin’ knew there would be an issue. i don’t say anythin’ about it and there’s still an issue.” not something that he wants to talk about. not something that he wants to acknowledge. he wanted to see them, and so he had. there were no rules against it. nothing telling him that he had to act like that he didn’t have anyone outside of this.

“stop it,” she hurls back. “don’t fucking do that.” the cracks in her foundation are going to show any second now, and she can’t have that. especially not now, not while they’re practically shouting at each other. did she know he was fine? yes, on an objective, empirical level, of course she did. but the heart does not always pay heed to what the head knows for certain, and in eggsy’s absence roxy had thought up about a thousand different ways a simple trip home could have gone horribly wrong. his next words make tears sting her eyes and the sensation alone is enough to make her throat want to close up. her voice grows quieter, colder. “you don’t fucking get it, do you?” of course he wouldn’t. eggsy doesn’t have this pathetic thing inside of him the way she does, searching hungrily for connection, for love. “i know it’s pointless when i worry, all right? i’m not a bloody imbecile. but consider for a moment that you are all i fucking have. and don’t start––– because i know you don’t owe me a single fucking thing. and that’s that. so–––” all of a sudden she deflates.  there’s that done. she’s fucking said it and humiliated herself. “you know what? good night.” she turns away to walk back to her quarters. “i’m sorry i hurt you.” when she says it, she doesn’t look at him.

It doesn’t take long for the girl’s resolve to crumble and she’s sobbing. It tugs at something in his chest, seeing the lass so frightened. He’s never had to deal with children before, had none of his own nor any siblings to give him nieces or nephews. He’s come across children before but CARING for them and comforting them is an entirely different matter than those brief interactions. He winks a quick text to Harry and Merlin through his glasses to alert them to the daughter’s presence after he hears his friend give the all CLEAR on his floor. He doesn’t want to alarm the girl by seemingly talking to himself or potentially another person she could perceive as wanting to hurt her.

“Oh, lass, I’m nae here te hurt ye. My friend and I came because we heard something bad happened. We work with yer parents.” It’s only half a lie. He’s never had direct interaction with the Mortons but he knows they’re ASSOCIATED with Kingsman in some manner. Were, rather. “The men who hurt them are gone, lass. I promise.” They’d been long gone by the time he and Harry had arrived, unfortunately.

It occurs to him that they’ll now have to deal with this orphaned child. Would they have to hand her over to child protective services? Let her go into government care? The thought immediately brings a bad taste to his mouth. He didn’t grow up in that kind of environment but he’d SEEN those places, known kids who’d come from them. It’s no way for a child to grow up. But then, given what she’s seen, given who her parents were, he wonders if they’ll not just bring her back to the estate for the time being. They’ll HAVE to. She’s a witness, after all. And the thought of having to question a child about such a traumatic event further sours the taste in his mouth.

She’s no longer railing against him, no longer hitting. She’s just crying. Trembling. He can feel her tiny body shaking in his hands and she looks so vulnerable, so broken and terrified. Merlin’s brow furrows slightly and he hesitates before slowly drawing her closer, to ensure that the offer of COMFORT is actually wanted. He pulls her into his arms and runs a hand over her back gently. “Shhh, lass…I’m sorry…but it’s goin’ te be alright. Ye’re safe.”

Hard breaths still rattle in and out of her chest and she’s too young, too tired to disbelieve him. His voice is calm and he’s a grown up and he’s telling her that he’s here to HELP. Roxy tries to take a deep breath in, but air only comes in short bursts and she nods through the wave of a sob. There is NOTHING for the young Morton to do now but cry. Her mind is not yet equipped to anticipate all the pain ahead of her: the grieving and displacement and confusion.

Already, though, her heart is beginning to CLING to him. She doesn’t understand it, but she’s beginning to associate him with safety, even comfort. When he takes her into him arms, there isn’t a single SECOND of hesitance before she’s thrown her arms around him as far as they’ll go, tiny fists bunching into his shirt. Tears pour down her cheeks and she only holds tighter, tighter. Holding fast to her life preserver.

She tries again to speak, hiccuping before words can form. “Mm....Mister...?” Her voice is SMALL and hoarse. “Where am I... Where am I going to go?” The last word is punctuated by more sobs as fear rises back up within her. Where WILL she go? Who’s going to take her in? Her grandparents are stuffy and mean–– come to think of it, all of her family that she’s met seems stiff and just awful and she doesn’t want to GO. The young girl isn’t ready to leave home and family behind, isn’t ready to say goodbye to her parents even if they weren’t always the kindest.

If she could have her choice, Roxy would just remain here; not having to emerge into a world that’s now stark and frightening. In this moment, even though it feels like her heart will collapse from the hurt, she’s safe. Someone CARES.

     Training could only account for so much. If reflexes didn’t also play their part, an agent was… well, ‘in trouble’ was putting it mildly, but of course if the discrepancy was too wide they would never have made agent at all. Neither was true of the man coded as Guignolet (in what the English cheekly called “the French Kingsman,” as if to thumb their noses at their Gaulish colleagues). Well-trained by the agency as well as doing many of his own stunts, the man was swift in reacting. Not enough to prevent collision entirely, but at least to deflect the force.

     “Careful, that’s my best cheek.” Delivered in complete deadpan.               

   “Then perhaps you oughtn’t to be grabbing strange women on the street.” 

    Her tone is even, tempered. Too late she’s realized this could be the man she’s supposed to meet. That he’s addressing her in English is certainly a potential clue. But it’s not as easy as that. Surely her contact knows exactly who to be looking for and she won’t budge first. Absolutely not. Poppy had caught her off guard. Never again would she be caught unawares like that. Never.

WHAT DOES YOUR MUSE SMELL LIKE?

roxy, first and foremost, smells clean. if you’ve caught her right after training or a run (you won’t) that’s the only exception. she’s just overall very well-groomed, so that is reflected back in the way she smells. she uses perfumes and colognes pretty often and tends towards more dark/rich scents like incense and musky things.

HOW OFTEN DOES YOUR MUSE BATHE/SHOWER? ANY HABITS?

there are occasions where roxy will miss a day, but that’s only if she doesn’t plan on seeing anyone (or being seen). otherwise she showers regularly in the morning. she’s pretty efficient and doesn’t usually take more than 20 minutes tops.

ANY BODY MOVEMENT QUIRKS? (E.G. KNEE SHAKES?)

roxy is a very still person, usually. she generally sits with her arms folded across her chest or her hands in her lap. she’s usually looking around and taking in her surroundings, but in a slow/calm manner. she scans; her eyes don’t dart. if she’s standing, she’ll default to some modified version of being at attention. if she’s undercover or in a ridiculously casual situation, she’s probably going to have her arms folded over her chest or just at her sides.

WHAT DO THEY SLEEP IN?

roxy usually sleeps in a pajama set (like the stuff we see her wearing during training. occasionally she’ll swap out the button top for a t-shirt or a tank top, and if it’s warmer out, pajama shorts.

WHAT’S THEIR FAVORITE PIECE OF CLOTHING?

she likes her blazers and jackets and she’s partial to something tweed-y, plaid, or tartan. (though she tends more towards grays and browns over anything colorful)

WHAT DO THEY DO WHEN THEY WAKE UP?

roxy usually gets right up and gets dressed and ready for the day. sometimes she’ll go running first, but more often than not, she just goes right to the bathroom to brush her teeth, wash her face, etc. sometimes she’ll brew herself tea and sit in her room for a while before she gets to work.

HOW DO THEY SLEEP? POSITION?

roxy sleeps on her side, usually with an arm tucked under her head/the pillow. she’s not a particularly heavy sleeper, but she can sleep through some noise. she rarely wakes up naturally, and when she hears her alarm she gets right up and starts her day. on the rare occasion she sleeps until her body wakes up naturally, she might indulge in a little lounging around in bed.

WHAT DO THEIR HANDS FEEL LIKE?

her fingers are very spindly and her hands are usually warm. roxy is very neat, so her nails are usually well manicured (though not painted). despite the fact that she’s a very skilled fighter, her hands don’t tend to be that rough because let’s face it, she moisturizes.

IF YOU KISSED THEM, WHAT WOULD THEY USUALLY TASTE LIKE?

probably a bit like a spot of tea. sue her, she’s british to her core.

“ fucking mental – you think this is real? ” he holds some EXPENSIVE looking object in his hand, much too expensive for him to be touching at all. “ y’know, harry showed me all them weapons they’ve got, some fucking BONKERS type … ” his sentence fades as the object falls out of his hand and right back onto the table where he’d taken it. he’s cracked it. “ – fuckin… shit. ” he mutters, under his breath, hoping roxy somehow went entirely deaf to the thud and breaking of porcelain.

roxy is digging through the papers in their target’s desk, and pops her head up to have a look at it. “ i’d reckon so. god knows they can afford... whatever it is. ” she’s being needlessly STUBBORN, they’ve got what they came for, but she’s sure there’s more that they can make use of here. and given that every person in the house is well and passed out, she doesn’t see the harm in being thorough. “ i don’t doubt it, ” she mumbles, “ i’m just glad we didn’t get too terribly up close and PERSONAL with any of them. ” her head snaps up at the sound, and she stands, a fistful of files at her side. “ oh my god, ” she says, really more amused than anything, “ you fucking didn’t, eggsy .”

If he were a braver man he’d tell her she had nothing to be sorry for. That she’s worth everything they both know is coming and that he’d gladly accept it.

But Merlin’s not that kind of man. In fact, most doubted he had a heart at all and yet Roxy had snagged what little emotion he’d let show and made it into this. Love was an oversimplification and passion was an insult. This burned more than any fire would and when she pulls away he swears she takes his breath along with her, as a keepsake he’d gladly give. Princess or not, he smiles, leaning in to steal her lips in a chaste, reserved sort of kiss, one that tells her he can’t do much now but promises he’ll be back soon.

He pulls away, standing to fix his cuffs.

It’s all he says before he’s taking the few steps to her balcony, the cold fall morning greeting him as he moves to climb down her trellis, a climb he’d made for nearly three months now.   

He may not say so, maybe not in so many words, but Roxy can feel it. There is care there, if silent. But his certainty of the events that lie ahead would be a point of disagreement. It’s not optimism so much as bull-headed stubbornness, but she is sure that she can stop any harm from coming their way. 

His way, really.

It’s difficult to describe what exists between them, but fire seems the most apt description. At once beautiful and dangerous; a source of light, warmth, and also pain.

She smiles softly against his lips, though even the most innocent of kisses could not be called innocuous. Roxanne knows well that their every touch could be Hamish’s undoing. Still, they both know what is at stake. He returns to her nonetheless.

The comment earns a chuckle from the princess, despite herself.

She watches him go with a soundless sigh and finally rouses herself to face another day through which she will have to lie her way.
