we should hype up bottom surgery more i think. both twitter transphobes and chronically online trans people really like to be disgusted at phalloplasty, vaginoplasty, ext. and i really think we should treat them as cool and sexy and neutral like top surgery scars or whatever
lies i've been told by misinformed trans women pessimistic about the idea of vaginoplasty: "well what's the point if it doesn't get wet boo hoo we are simply cursed with No Options"
my surgeon at the consult: "my technique places your penile urethral tissue just inside the labia, where it will get wet when aroused, so that if you're making out with someone and they stick their hand down your pants they'll know you're interested. you will probably still want lube for full penetration, but it won't be bone dry."
anyway
the results of vaggie and phallo are not directly homologous to the "medical standard" of a cis vagina or penis but
not even all cis people have genitals that close to the "medical standard;" there are a variety of ways that genitals may differ from that standard on cis bodies. for example, hypospadias (urethral exit not at the tip of the penis) is extremely common. cis people often go their whole lives living with these genitals. or sometimes they get them revised, just like trans people sometimes get their bottom surgeries revised. or sometimes they're revised without their consent in medically unnecessary childhood surgeries. the last thing is not good but it's a reality plenty of cis people are living with
adherence to that medical standard is not really that important in the grand scheme of things, having genitals that allow you to exist and move and fuck in the ways that you want is important
building on that point, very cis-similar surgeries like vaggie and phallo are not the only ones available, and sometimes people want something else. and many of those something elses do exist! shallow labiaplasty. metoidioplasty. phalloplasty without vaginectomy. even phallus preserving vaginoplasty, which is currently hard to find but will hopefully become more accessible. many people choose these surgeries to get genitals which do not strive to emulate standard cis genitals, and they do so because that's what they want and it makes them happy
bottom surgery is real and there are thousands of people happy with the genitals they got from it. don't let doomerism about bottom surgery color your perception of it.
also if you like the genitals you already have, fuck yeah keep 'em. bottom surgery isn't a "requirement" or "rite of passage" in transness it's just one of the many optional ways we can modify and sculpt our bodies according to our own will.
The whole "trans women can't get periods because they don't have uteruses" terf rhetoric is almost funny to me knowing that male dogs can have false heats and false pregnancies when their bodies produce excess estrogen
to those wondering How someone without a uterus can have a period: it actually has very little to do with the organs! Estrogen is a set of instructions that your body follows. when it's in constant supply at the right levels, your body will start picking out a schedule for when it needs to release a few other hormones, and start squeezing the ever-loving shit out of the MUSCLES that it expects to be around those organs. Remember, bleeding is only a small part of a period. the main symptoms are muscle cramps, pain or discomfort in the lower abdominal area(because of the cramps), irregular bowel movements(because of the cramps), needing to pee more(because of the cramps), bloating, craving specific foods, nausea, and fluctuations in energy levels & nutritional needs. none of that requires a uterus or ovaries; even the bloating is only PARTIALLY from being full of blood.
this is also why cis women born without functioning reproductive systems(i.e. womb is just scar tissue, neither ovary actually works, developed a third kidney instead of a uterus, that kind of thing) can still have periods throughout their life. as long as they're producing lots of estrogen, it's gonna happen!
Which muscles???? What organ is cramping??? Why is it that organ cramping???
the organ isn't cramping, the muscles AROUND the uterus are cramping. it can also spread to the rear, legs, and back. Here's a discussion on the various factors which can effect the severity of a period cramp. it's mainly the muscles which surround the Peritoneal Cavity, and you can see the difference between the typical male and female cavity(lower half) here:
this isn't usually covered in anatomy classes until you get to college, so i don't blame you for not knowing! as you can see, you have the same muscles around that cavity regardless, and those are a large part of what starts Squeezing during a menstrual cramp. this can also irritate the nearby anus, which is why Period Poops are a thing.
I really wish they would cover this in sex ed. all we ever got told in my class was that you might feel some "cramping" around that area, and that it might hurt, then moved on to reproduction. they never actually talked about WHY your muscles tense up, or which ones, or which hormones were changing and what they did, or even mentioned the peritoneal cavity that houses your uterus, ovaries, liver, stomach, and other vitals! having an understanding of how the reproductive organs related to the rest of the body would have made the whole thing feel a lot more normal at the time.
To add a bit more info on this excellent post, as long as the expected hormonal pattern exists for a long enough period of time, it's possible for an individual to experience PMS symptoms. It's why even after having a hysterectomy, a cis woman can still experience period symptoms.
A uterus is not necessary, because it's not the uterus driving it, it's the hormones that provide instructions to chemicals in the body that help shed the uterine lining, but it's not a targeted thing, it's generalized, which is why all the other nasty full-body symptoms exist on top of shedding the prospective uterine lining.
Prostaglandins are one of the main drivers of the cramping that is experienced.
Prostaglandins (from the linked site's description, i've bolded some content for my own emphasis) are: "One of a number of hormone-like substances that participate in a wide range of body functions such as the contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle, the dilation and constriction of blood vessels, control of blood pressure, and modulation of inflammation. Prostaglandins are derived from a chemical called arachidonic acid. Prostaglandin hormones are made by nearly every cell in the body. In the uterus, they're what causes the muscles to contract each month so that you can release the lining of your uterus (endometrium). Studies have shown the more prostaglandin inflammation you have, the worse your menstrual cramps can be, which is known as dysmenorrhea."
Additionally, from the same site: "Prostaglandins help with stimulating ovulation and making sure your uterus contracts appropriately so you can remove the endometrium efficiently during your period. They also play a role in inducing labor. Prostaglandins in pregnancy elevate during labor to stimulate uterine contractions and the birth of baby"
The peritoneum, one's intenstines, the colon, and other parts of the body involve smooth muscle tissue, and those areas are then impacted during periods, leading to cramping and "period poops" and whatnot.
Trans women are obviously able to experience cramps in general, pre-HRT, and on some hormone profiles/timelines, it's certainly possible that the body would exhibit PMS symptoms on a cyclical nature as long as that profile/timeline holds consistent. The prostaglandins would be performing a similar function, just due to hormonal balance.
Bodies aren't magical, they function in largely predictable ways. Trans women on HRT have everything in their bodies necessary to experience period cramps, because the hormones and the respective chemicals aren't sentient to check if there's a uterus, they're just more or less fulfilling a function of biological regulation.
If someone ever asserts that trans women couldn't experience these symptoms, they would have a big hill to climb in providing medical evidence as to why it would be impossible, because everything that we knows points to "Yes, it's certainly possible".
Can't believe I haven't seen any Tumblr posts about this yet I guess I must do everything myself around here
DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is now out, and you travel to a community centre where the toilets look like this:
You can tell the sex of a Pikachu by its tail shape. Lightning for male, heart for female. The red toilet sign is a male tail, the blue one is a female tail.
The grey Pikachu head shape? Ungendered. And to be completely unambiguous in-game:
Gender neutral Pokémon bathrooms

look at me. listen to me. bigots and queerphobes don’t know the distinction between a trans person, a gnc cis gay person, and a cisgender heterosexual crossdresser. all of these people are just queer degenerates to them. that is why their anti-drag bills are written so vaguely as to encompass any possible mundane gender nonconformity - so they can target as many of us as possible in one ruling. and that’s why you need to stop trying to put lines between these groups in regards to ‘who’s more oppressed’ and ‘who has the right to talk about gender’ - gender nonconformity and transgenderism are punished in exactly the same way. cut one of us and the other bleeds. our fight is the same.
I just want to get dicked down again =/
