Good Traits Gone Bad
Exploring good traits gone bad in a novel can add depth and complexity to your characters. Here are a few examples of good traits that can take a negative turn:
1. Empathy turning into manipulation: A character with a strong sense of empathy may use it to manipulate others' emotions and gain an advantage.
2. Confidence becoming arrogance: Excessive confidence can lead to arrogance, where a character belittles others and dismisses their opinions.
3. Ambition turning into obsession: A character's ambition can transform into an unhealthy obsession, causing them to prioritize success at any cost, including sacrificing relationships and moral values.
4. Loyalty becoming blind devotion: Initially loyal, a character may become blindly devoted to a cause or person, disregarding their own well-being and critical thinking.
5. Courage turning into recklessness: A character's courage can morph into reckless behavior, endangering themselves and others due to an overestimation of their abilities.
6. Determination becoming stubbornness: Excessive determination can lead to stubbornness, where a character refuses to consider alternative perspectives or change their course of action, even when it's detrimental.
7. Optimism becoming naivety: Unwavering optimism can transform into naivety, causing a character to overlook dangers or be easily deceived.
8. Protectiveness turning into possessiveness: A character's protective nature can evolve into possessiveness, where they become overly controlling and jealous in relationships.
9. Altruism becoming self-neglect: A character's selflessness may lead to neglecting their own needs and well-being, to the point of self-sacrifice and burnout.
10. Honesty becoming brutal bluntness: A character's commitment to honesty can turn into brutal bluntness, hurting others with harsh and tactless remarks.
These examples demonstrate how even admirable traits can have negative consequences when taken to extremes or used improperly. By exploring the complexities of these traits, you can create compelling and multi-dimensional characters in your novel.

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
Might I add:
The defeat of the wizard who made people choose how they’d be to be executed
The woman who raised the changeling alongside her biological child
The human who died of radiation poisoning after repairing the spaceship
The adventures of a space roomba
Cinderella finding Araura (and falling in love)
I don’t know a snappy description but the my nemesis cynthia story certainly lives in my head
hilariously, these are almost all in my fic tag. so, a compiled list from the notes (and some extras):
The God of Arepo (graphic novel 1 / 2 / 3) (ebook)
The Monster of Sentan
The Witch’s Cat
Raise Both Children
Stabby the Roomba (honorable mention)
Cinderella Marries the Prince (comic)
My Arch Nemesis Cynthia
Pirates and Mermaid
Eindred and the Witch
The Demon King
The Cornerwitch
Grandmother Beetroot
Apocalypse Daycare Worker
Grandmother Accidentally Summons a Demon
New Year Saga
A Story About Changelings
Ranger in the King’s Forest
The Difference Between a Hare and a Rabbit
Goblin Men (Canines)
I am in love with you /p
What about the one with the princess locked in a tower learning to become a wizard? That’s lived in my mind for years and I haven’t seen it in a long time
Oh, love that story, adding it to the list: 20. Princess Talia and adding a few more contenders 21. Thyme 22. The Monster under the Bed 23. A Meaningful Death 24. Humans are unstoppable…until they aren’t 25. The Monster under the Fridge 26. Antler Guy 27. Cleric slamming healing spells
Adding a few more I remembered: 28. The Frog and the Scorpion 29. HSTHETE 30. The First Witch in the World 31. Imagine that Oceans were replaced by Forests 32. A Faerie taking a Name 33. The Dragon on the Farm 34. Synovus & Menace 35. Raising the Anti-Christ 36. Aliens vs. Flora & Fauna of Earth (pretty sure there are even more additions to the original post but I had this one saved) 37. Doctors without Borders…in Space! 38. The Villain-Wrangler 39. The Last Contact 40. The 100 Parent-Point Children 41. And the Heavens Wept 42. The Night Gentleman 43. The Serpent God and their Priestess
44. No One Showed Up for the Last Storytime
Wow! @writing-prompt-s contributing to like half of these!
I can hardly take any credit for these stories! But I love sharing them. Unfortunately I cannot read all the prompt responses so please tag me if you want me to reblog a story that resonated with you so I can give it a little boost :)
Can we have a list of recommendations of less mainstream podcasts you like?
Yes absolutely you can! I’m flattered you’d ask, though I don’t have a lot of time to listen to podcasts, so I’m afraid they won’t be as varied as you hoped for. I’ll reblog this post once I’ve made my list, and I’ll try to keep it updated!
Right! Okay, so some of these are more popular than others, and I’ll try to give them some sort of order so the better known ones are first:
Victoriocity! This one’s quite popular, but no one talks about it. It’s a hilarious detective story, and the second season genuinely stole my breath
Alba Salix! This one was what my first post on this blog was about, so it holds a special place in my heart. Anyway an amazing medieval fantasy romcom!
Two Princes! It’s gay! It’s heartwarming! It’s one of the best podcasts, and short and easy to binge listen
Startripper!! Equally heartwarming, but this time sci-fi. It’s just so lovely to listen to, I’ve already bonded with Feston. Plus, it’s short too.
36 Questions: the podcast musical! this one’s a three-part musical starring Jonathan Groff and Jessie Shelton, and the music is so entrancing.
The London Necropolis Railway: this one’s so obscure, but it’s about the ghouls monitoring the trains that take the dead down into the underworld, until something goes wrong…
The Amelia Project! Possibly my favourite podcast ever! It’s about an agency that makes people disappear, and features an interviewer more accomplished than a man standing on his head juggling two whales, clients as varied as the dice life, and lots of cocoa
Honorary mentions that have a relatively larger fan base but you may not have heard of: We Fix Space Junk (shenanigans in space), Station Arcadia (relatively new, life in four intriguing settings), The Strange Case of Starship Iris (space is gay, okay? also really fun) and Kaleidotrope (two boys take problems and maybe fall in love)
Seconding all of this! Also:
Windfall: A big adventure with a huge cast and an amazing sound design/dramatic score
Mockery Manor: Murder mystery in a British theme park in the 80s. So many catchy songs!
Carlötta Beautox: Fast paced Hollywood satire (with a musical episode in season 2!)
Fall of the House of Sunshine: a fully-produced noir comedy musical series about a murdered tooth-themed kids show host
A Voice From Darkness: A supernatural call-in show where people who are being stalked/trapped/otherwise attacked by supernatural entities
Georgie Romero is Done For: It’s like adult Halloweentown, spooky but wholesome
Unwell: small town Gothic!
Fan Wars: Star Wars rom-com!
Elaine’s Cooking for the Soul: It’s a post-apocalyptic cooking show with actually great budget-friendly meals
More Podcast Recs
Aight so I’ve been listening to a lot of new shows recently, and I thought I’d share my findings! In order of when I started listening to them:
This Planet Needs a Name
A small spaceship crew is tasked with seeding a new planet for the people who will settle there long, long after they are gone. File this under shows that people kept telling me to listen to that absolutely live up to the hype. Oh My God. Ohhhh my god. This is my new favorite found family AD. It’s all about people full of love for each other and passion for what they do, admiring and encouraging those traits in the people around them. It’s about dealing with loss and hurt, and learning to care for and be cared for by people who have different scars than you do. It’s sweet and magical and lovely and just… just real good.
Greater Boston
It’s… hard to describe. More or less, it’s a slice of life show about seven (well, technically eight) people in Boston whose lives interconnect, interact, or otherwise affect each other. Some of their problems are silly and entertaining, some are profoundly emotional, and many are just really, really weird. Also it delves into alternate history without quite hitting hard fantasy/sci-fi. Overall, VERY enjoyable. One of the biggest things I want in a story is a relatable human element, and this is literally nothing but that. I chowed through a whole season at once almost without realizing it. I’m just now alternating it with other shows so I don’t get burned out.
The Deca Tapes
A group of people are trapped together for mysterious reasons and by even more mysterious means. Things are tense when one of them begins to question their situation, and grow even more so when a disastrous event occurs… Very interesting, the perspective shifts around between each captive and an outsider looking at the aftermath. The personal stories of the captives are just as engaging as the larger story, and both have a neat element of suspense to them. I have less to say about this one because it’s only one season, and I don’t want to spoil anything, but honestly it’s a good, compact thriller.
The Mistholme Museum of Mystery, Morbidity, and Mortality
An AI audio tour guide leads you around this esoteric museum in the face of environmental hazards and its own impending self-awareness. Genuinely surprised that I haven’t heard about this one more, it’s a neat anthology series with a tone that ranges from dark folktale to lighthearted The Twilight Zone. I don’t remember where I saw a rec for it, but the description that got me interested was “If you liked the more benign SCP entries and fell in love with Wheatley, this show’s for you”, and that’s pretty spot on. I liked the first season and I’m liking the second one even more, it has more variety in its tone and makes the frame story more compelling.

Trying to draw buildings
yo here’s a useful tip from your fellow art ho cynellis… use google sketchup to create a model of the room/building/town you’re trying to draw… then take a screenshot & use it as a reference! It’s simple & fun!
Sketchup is incredibly helpful. I can’t recommend it enough.
There’s a 3D model warehouse where you can download all kinds of stuff so you don’t have to build everything from scratch.
reblog to save a life
This is an incomplete tutorial, and it drives me crazy every time I see it come around.
We live in a pretty great digital age and we have access to a ton of amazing tools that artists in past generations couldn’t even dream of, but a lot of people look at a cool trick and only learn half of the process of using it.
Here’s the missing part of this tutorial:
How do you populate your backgrounds?
Well, here’s the answer:
If the focus is the environment, you must show a person in relation to that environment.
The examples above are great because they show how to use the software itself, but each one just kind of “plops” the character in front of their finished product with no regard of the person’s relation to their environment.
How do you fix this?
Well, here’s the simplest solution:
This is a popular trick used by professional storyboard and comic artists alike when they’re quickly planning compositions. It’s simple and it requires you to do some planning before you sit down to crank out that polished, final version of your work, but it will be the difference between a background and an environment.
From Blacksad (artist: Juanjo Guarnido)
From Hellboy (Mike Mignola)
Even if your draftsmanship isn’t that great (like mine), people can be more immersed in the story you tell if you just make it feel like there is a world that exists completely separate from the one in which they currently reside – not just making a backdrop the characters stand in front of.
Your creations live in a unique world, and it is as much a character as any other member of the cast. Make it as believable as they are.
Great comments and tutorials!
I’m a 3d artist and have been exploring the possibilities of using 3d as reference for 2d poses. I want to add a couple of tips and things!
Sketchup is very useful for environment references, and I assume it’s reasonably easy to learn. If you’re interested in going above and beyond, I highly recommend learning a proper 3d modeling program to help with art, especially because you can very easily populate a scene or location with characters!
Using 3ds Max I can pretty quickly construct an environment for reference. But going beyond that, I can also pose a pretty simple ‘CAT’ armature (known in 3d as a rig) straight into the scene, which can be totally customized, from various limbs, tails, wings, whatever, to proportions, and also can be modeled onto and expanded upon (for an example, you could 3d sculpt a head reference for your character and then attach it to the CAT rig, so you have a reference for complex face angles!)
The armature can also be posed incredibly easily. I know programs exist for stuff like this - Manga Studio, Design Doll - but posing characters in these programs is always an exercise in frustration and very fiddly imo. A simple 3d rig is impossibly easy to pose.
By creating an environment and dropping my character rig into it, I have an excellent point of reference when it comes to drawing the scene!
Not only that, but I can also view the scene from whatever angle I could ever want or need, including the character and their pose/position relative to the environment.
We can even quickly and easily expand this scene to include more characters!
Proper 3d modeling software is immensely powerful, and if you wanted to, you could model a complex environment that occurs regularly in your comic or illustration work (say, a castle interior, or an outdoor forest environment) and populate the scene with as many perspective-grounded characters as you need!
reblogging to save a life
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look at this amazing addition! This is fantastic!
Not just poses, you can also do this with lighting. Playing with lights in Blender is pretty fun.
Another cool thing: http://www.makehumancommunity.org lets you generate a human model. Like a character creator in a game, but more flexible, and the result is ready to import into a 3d editor like Blender.
This was a lot shorter last time it appeared here. Reblogging for the updated tips and to save a life!
Seven For A Secret
Seven For A Secret is a gothic lit-inspired short story that I’ve been writing over the past month for my English class! It was written after reading A Turn of The Screw. The most difficult part about writing this piece was that it’s primarily told through audio recordings, meaning I couldn’t really describe actions. It’s actually a rewrite of a ghost story I wrote for a creative writing assignment four years ago, and I couldn’t be more happy with how it’s come out.
I appreciate any (constructive!) feedback! Likes, reblogs, and comments are all very appreciated!!
STORY STATS: STARTED NOV. 2ND 12pm - FINISHED DEC. 16TH 1:20pm (EST) FINAL WORD COUNT: 4,940 words
SUMMARY On a warm autumn evening, two teenagers find themselves braving the old, dilapidated house that has stood on the outskirts of town for nearly 200 years. They’ve grown up hearing countless stories of its supposedly haunted halls, and tonight, they aim to learn its secrets themselves. The story they find, retold through abandoned recording devices and a book still dripping with ink, is beyond their wildest imagination. But one question lures them onwards: what happened, decades ago, to the last people to cross this house’s rotting threshold?

I am SO IN LOVE with this horror/feel-good story!! Awesome story telling!! I sincerely felt as if I was there alongside Luci and Aven and them all! 😍😍😍😍🎉👀
I wanted to have a Halloween/Día de Muertos sleepover with my friends or... go out and have fun. I wanted to have a partner in crime while enjoying a pumpkin spiced. I wanted to watch scary movies and carve pumpkins with my found family in the living room. To have my ears deliciously filled with stinking at karaoke and my mouth with an apple, sliced. To dance with a special someone until my feet hurt and until my heart went boom. To get tipsy, not just on cocktails, but on the air that comes out of the huge cackles that my girls burst out, fun sized.
I wanted to... not feel like this.
Like the last note on your favourite song. As if the good times have already passed and you're left alone. Left alone on a dancefloor that has dimmed its lights and plays the echoes of the ones that were right there by your side. Because you are the one that gets left behind while they find other clubs to dance in, singing songs you no longer recognize.
Perhaps you just need to sleep it off. Go home.
Home. You have been home for too long. Is it even home when the walls trap you inside? When you can no longer get up from your bed and sleeping is the only fun ride? The temptation to just lie there forever seems... too strong.
Am I lonely? Time goes by too fucking slowly. I crave the love I felt on a daily basis when I was younger. I got used to it and now I feel like a cut off addict with the worst kind of hunger.
Do I even deserve it?
Is it that I just didn't know how to preserve it?
I was taught by them how to keep them in my life.
It became a habit, and now it's but a heartbreaking strife.
Now I need to unlearn it.
But... I'm not fucking worth it.
And so, this poem I write. Because telling them that I'm lonely could be seen as out of spite. Because screaming in a void is better than losing them all. Being this alone makes me feel so small... and as if I'm in a box that's much too tight. It stifles my voice and my very own light.
I can't breathe, I can't move.
If I stayed still... do you think they'll disappear?
I wish I could self-remove.
They'd, at least and at last, think of me for... maybe a year.
Oh, what a wonderful dream!
♡♡Disclaimer: I won't self remove, I am nothing but venting and expressing myself and how intensely my emotions are at the moment. Also, yes, the bad drawing is mine and if you wanna, you can check more of my stuff on IG: @reindrawsapples . Thank you for reading.
you just had to go back like, what, a month?

Ok, I don't do posts like this. Cause I don't usually get worked up over stuff enough TO make a post.
But like.
Come on. That ending???
Literally was jiving with the entire movie- except for that ONE THING- up until the last ten minutes.
I just- we're just undoing everything? This entire story we've been following for years, the characters and their journeys we've gotten attached to? Cried over some of them??
And if we are going this route, what sense does it make for Jim not to be the trollhunter anymore? That whole thing about this being what he's "meant to do?" He's the only one that remembers anything. Taking him out of the leadership role just?? Doesn't make sense???
And ok- maybe an unpopular opinion. But. Trollhunter Toby? Much as I love Tobes- that ain't it. The character who repeatedly said he was the sidekick, the wingman and was totally at peace with that? Who was a great support for his friend, who was the one with the leader type personality? Jim, who had his disney princess "I want more" shpeal and Toby was like "nah man I'm good."
Is that what we're doing now, we're just switching jobs?
Idk. Some choices were made and I have some opinions.
This is a custom sigil commissioned by my beautiful friend, Leelahel, who is a card-reader and medium.
It’s meant to enhance the ability to communicate with spirits and to divine, particularly through cartomancy and tarot (designed with her aesthetic in mind, which was, thankfully, symbolically in tune with the purpose of the sigil).
Great for mediums, tarot-readers, fortune-tellers, and any type of witch, mystic or occultist who wishes to see beyond the veil.
Hello, beloved Tumblr people! I am an aspiring author who loves Mexican culture and I wanted to see if some of you would like to give my horror story a spin and tell me what you thought? Please, someone, give me criticism? Thaaaank you, have a good one!
the overwhelming grief of losing an entire year to sickness, violence and pandemic fatigue is settling in so id like to remind everyone that: you are not a failure, yes there is still a happy future for you, and wearing a mask is very sexy
