Thinking about the end of Better Call Saul.
I personally don't find it sad, I mean, it's the only fair and healthy way to finish the story for Jimmy and Kim.
It has to stop, Jimmy had to be stopped and take the charge for everything so Kim could stay free, it was the only way to bring back peace between them and mind freedom for each of them.
Kim spend her energy to protect him during the old days, now it's time to jimmy to protect her.
For me it's not a sad ending, it's a fair ending. None of them is dead, they finally find peace, and in the last scene I can see the complicity back, maybe not the same, maybe a complicity tainted by some pain and regrets but a complicity that reminds me of the old times.
The subtle smiles and looks between them, make me think it's not their last goodbye, I'm sure Kim will come back to see and share more cigarettes with him ❤️🥲
Yeah exactly like if they hadn’t stopped when they did then their scams probably would’ve just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger until they were both in prison. I think we see Kim realize that and that’s why she leaves. Jimmy doesn’t really. That’s why he stays until that happens. Until it gets so big he gets caught because he tried again for yet another big scam. And it’s not until Kim turns herself in tells them everything consequences be damned that he realizes he needs to do the same.
Also, Kim doesn't get away free. A lot of people misinterpret the line "I lied to the government about Kim Wexler" as Jimmy taking the fall for everything that happened. He meant he lied to get her to show up. But Kim has already confessed everything that happened with Howard to Cheryl, and is fully open to being sued. (I think it's left ambiguous as to whether or not Cheryl will go through with it.)
This is super important as it means Jimmy and Kim both get their redemption arcs.
Yeah like this is the happiest way it could’ve ended. They were never gonna run off into the sunset together they were never gonna stop scamming until they were forced to stop. For Kim what forced her was Howard’s death. For Jimmy it was Kim’s sacrifice. In the ending they both set themselves free and they showed that they both still loved each other even after everything. Kim doesn’t have to sit with the guilt or the secrets of what they did anymore she’s finally set free from all that. That’s why she sobbed on the bus. Because that was six years of guilt and secrecy finally releasing itself from her body. It’s also why she gets back into volunteering at that law office. She’s moving on after letting all that go and getting back to what she loves. And then Jimmy sees this big sacrifice Kim made confessing to Howard’s wife what they did knowing it could ruin her. And he realizes it’s time he finally lets go. It’s time he doesn’t get off Scot free like he always does. So he lies to get Kim to come to the court room pretends he’s gonna rat on her even though he would never do that so he can make the ultimate gesture of love for her to see and he tells the truth about everything. He gives up his freedom to set himself. And Kim. Free. No more secrets. No more lies. No more cons. No more Saul. And then she goes to visit him. Recognizes the sacrifice he made for her. And they share one last cigarette just like they did in the pilot of the show. And that’s that. Bookended.
Also, I'd like to know your opinion about one thing, I understood Kim got her lawer card back (or something like that). Did you understand the same or is it just me ?
