It is Elrond who gains a burst of foresight at the birth of Arwen.
He sees many things: a crown and a city of gleaming stone, white branches of white flowers forming an arch, adoration and love.
He sees wrinkled hands, a tomb of stone, veils of black. Tears and loss and a forever parting.
He looks down at his tiny baby, a tuft of black fluff atop her head, fingers curled up into the tiniest little fist. And he knows.
Knows that one day she will make a choice that means her parents cannot follow. That she will take the path of his brother, that they will never be reunited after their parting, not until the world is remade.
Tears trickle down his face, and Celebrian asks what he has seen. Fear fills her voice, for she remembers well the tragedies of their family.
Elrond finds he cannot tear his eyes away from his baby. Cannot look away from the little frown that creases Arwen’s face.
He tells Celebrian the most important part of his vision:
Arwen will be loved.
Galadriel, Saruman, and Gandalf: *Incomprehensible shouting*
Celeborn: So, what's your opinion?
Elrond: That this council is unnecessary.
Celeborn: I meant about Sauron being back.
Elrond: Oh, I've been trying to tell them that for centuries. I don't think you could hear me over them though.
When I tell you I snorted!

im sorry @fvriva but your tags were too good to leave them there
crazy that elrond is just walking around in his garden with his hobbit friend reading books and eating dinner or something and then you remember he's. the great grandson of THEEE LUTHIEN. the luthien of legend!!! and then the great grandson of TURGON! literal KING OF GONDOLIN. and then you calm down a bit and then immediately stop again because now you've remembered that if we go back another generation we've reached THINGOL and FINGOLFIN – the merging of elwë and finwë's folk. you know, the OGs?? he could (theoretically) be king of both the sindar (and all the teleri tbh) and the noldor......... that's like 2/3 of the big three groups of elves? he's one of the only living descendants of the high kings of the past, and not in a ridiculously distant way like aragorn is. he... he could be the king of the whole world honestly. and he isn't. he doesn't want to be.......he wants to be the lord of a haven where people can rest and heal and grow and learn and talk and love.......he chooses peace and serenity and safety over glory. he's his ancestors but actually successful. he's the sun. he's beautiful. he's as strong as a warrior. he's as wise as a wizard. he's as kind as summer. he's the bestest boy in the whole world. I'm eating my hat
To add on to this, it's true but also, it misses that Elrond is so, so infinitely tragic. His father is Earendil, a star, his mother a woman of mighty power and such goodness as to be one of few who could even *touch* the silmarils, and neither could stay for him. His brother was King of Numenor -the *first* king, in fact- who died a mortal (in a kingdom that Elrond got to be around for the sinking of). He was there for the failure of his own kin (His own blood!) at Mount Doom, and was not himself, able to destroy the ring *either.* He's a ring bearer, but not because it was he, chosen to be so, but because when Gil-Galad passed, *someone* had to be. Speaking of which- he was almost king, almost a legend, but viceroy instead, witness instead, to the end of all the legends, to the end of all magic, such that even his children chose mortality, to never return to him. He was always surrounded by legends and heroes, but never quite among them. Few Elves and no men at all have seen as many endings as he did. Why would he choose to be a legend or a king or anything grand at all when in the end, just as surely as the hobbits, he too would pass into the veil of the forgotten?
Shiny Glorfindel
Elrond as viewed by Númenoreans is hilarious. Aristocracy is one thing, and their long kept histories and direct descent from the elves.
But someone lowborn - still educated, still familiar with the stories. Faithful or not. Lifespan lower than the upper class, but longer than other humans - but that doesn't matter - thousands of years is a long time. The Roman Empire was more recent than this guy.
Because imagine the founder of your nation and its first king, who was told to have been born as the son of a bird and a star, lived to be 500, and who died 2000 years ago. Just. Has a sibling. Who is still running around. You can go visit him. You can! He's very friendly. He wrote the medical book your healers study from. He updates it religiously every other decade. You don't hear from him often because he lives fairly secluded from society and seems to prefer a quiet life but every few hundred years something batshit insane happens and he's right there. At the center of things. Pretending to be a background character, as if Sauron didn't look warily at him expecting him to turn into another Lúthien incident. Maybe he's shy?
You are a sailor. You meet him on one of your journeys to Middle Earth.
He's not shy. He's just crown-phobic. He looks like every single painting of Tar-Minyatur you've seen. He glitters under starlight. Literally. His parents are a bird and a star and you keep forgetting that's not a metaphor. Everyone is in love with him. He sings to the birds. He has had a slowburn one-sided romance going on for the past 1000 years. His crush has yet to find out but the king is running a betting pool.
Galadriel: How can you be mad when you look at his little face?
Elrond: *Puppy eyes*
Gil-Galad: My biggest mistake was introducing you two.
at least to me, elrond is the key character of the saga as a whole- the silmarillion, the hobbit, and the lord of the rings.
he's the son of the hero. he loses his mother because of a silmaril, and gains two father figures. in the end, the three silmarils share a fate with each of his three fathers. his brother becomes the king of numenor, which is to be the greatest and the most influential kingdom of men.
he's the sole heir of gondolin, and to him goes glorfindel's allegiance; the balrog slayer reincarnated and returning from the blessed lands. in him lives on fingolfin, turgon, idril, tuor, melian, luthien, and beren.
he's there when sauron returns, and he's there in the thick of battle against his might. he's the herald of the high king, and to him is entrusted one of the three elven rings. he witnesses isildur taking the one ring.
he's the one pointing thorin and his company toward the halls of their fathers and the arkenstone, and his house- the last homely house, the last refuge and place of healing- is where bilbo wishes to return to after a long lifetime.
he fosters the line of his brother; the mortal children who would become chieftains of their people- one of which helps save the world and becomes king.
he shelters frodo, and he directs the one ring to be destroyed. in his house was coordinated the fellowship, and it is where they set out on their journey to mordor.
with his passing ends the age of the elves. a new chapter begins, where the narrative pen comes to a halt. with his passing ends the tale.
Have you ever thought of the first time Aragorn or little Estel (always his little boy in Elrond eyes) called him, "Lord Elrond"?
Because I have.
Because it must have hurt terribly, painfully, like getting a splinter and not knowing where it came from but you know it hurts whenever you move.
So it must have hurt when the little human child, who you are very painfully aware of his mortality, stop calling you with that small simple word that held so much emotion in it.
"Ada." He called you, as the stars reflected in his eyes and the childlike wonder gaze at you, as you look down at your precious little boy in your arms.
It's a simple word, two syllables and barely a sound.
But it means so much to you. As your precious called for you. No matter if it's in his happy squeal of "Ada!" when he saw you, or if it's in his heart-wrenching "Ada.." when he plead at you to heal whatever has ails him.
So it takes you by suprise when the little boy you held so dear no longer called you by the simple word.
"Lord Elrond" he said as his weary eyes no longer gazed at you with adoration that once there. "Lord Elrond" he will address you when you meet him again after years passing by of him fulfilling his destiny.
It shouldn't bother you, truly.
After all, it is your name and others usually called you by it.
But it's others; who you did not raise from whence he was naught but a small boy with bright grey eyes with childlike wonder.
And it's others; who you did not held in your arms as you walk along the lake, letting the singing elves to lull them into sleep in their father's arm.
It's others but never your Estel, never your little Hope who called you by that name.
And as you look at the broad back of the man (no longer your little child) walking out of the gate of Imladris, you wonder and you Hope just as you once called for the name that the answering will always be "Ada".
self insert? no. this is an elf insert. stuck an elf in where there shouldn't be one
I think that one of the funniest things about Legolas (especially in the movies) is that he’s literally the only Elvish prince in all of Middle-Earth but everyone treats him like he’s just a random guy. And he ACTS like just a random guy as well which makes it even better
Technically, Elrond is THE Elvish prince, but I think he strangles anyone who mentions that because then he'd have to be High King of the Noldor, and the track record for those isn't great.
Reading the Silmarillion, the elves seem so active and full of life. They’re always doing things. When you get to the Lord of the Rings, they just seem so tired. Elrond holds a meeting and then he’s out. Galadriel has some guests stay with her. They’re so done. They just wanna leave.
the number of people in the top vs bottom pic is accurate too
Yup. The few high elves we see in LotR are the ones who weren’t killed, and didn’t sail over to Valinor. Elrond and Celeborn remain, because they were born in Middle-Earth, and despite everything they don’t want to abandon their home. And Galadriel remains, because she’s the last one of the leaders of the exiled Noldor, and was under a ban to return.
They’re all tired and wise and mellow, because the hot-headed ones have all died long ago.
CÃrdan’s hanging out in Arda as well. He’s so old he has a beard.

Please tell me that I am not the only one that thinks that Elrond is seriously underrated. Like he had lived through all three Ages, lost almost everyone he had loved and yet he still choose to remain in Middle-earth and help anyone and everyone. And beside he is the best healer, a lore-master an incredible warrior and so on. Where are his fans? Like seriously
