Honestly, I love to make it blunt that I write for black women, not just by labeling but by implementing our struggles, features, and culture into my work. I find it so fulfilling to make it obvious like the white people do.
I adore adding things that only resonate with us like how white girls will do:
“You brushed through your hair.”
“They ran their fingers through your hair.”
Or being related to a white person.
They are just describing full-on Marilyn Monroe's or Sabrina Carpenter's, essentially it's obvious they are writing with white women in mind(which is fine), but the hate they give black authors is crazy.
“You detangled your curly/kinky hair.”
“They ran their fingers through your braids/twist/locs/ silk press.”
“You felt warmth in your face.”
“Your brown skin glowed in the sunlight.”
“Plump and naturally lined lips.”
Then some history random shit like how we weren't allowed vanilla ice cream and we came up with butter pecan instead.
Always please me, because it's my way of showing that this is meant for my girls, my people, my culture. I know some keep it to a minimum but I make that shit pop. My work will always be about us, and I make sure it can relate to Afro Latina, Afro Latinx, Afro Brazilian, Bi-Racial, Black Americans, African Americans, and the Afro diaspora. Edit-Also, Afro Asians/ Blasians(we love y'all.)
Things from southern culture will be seen(as a southerner), voodoo(Caribbean, southern, and African), hoodoo(Caribbean & southern), soul food, dialogue of the iconic hair salon gossip, Mardi Gras, etc.
Furthermore, it's not always gonna be labeled because the white girls don't do it. So why am I required to? I'm going to write to my liking and make it blunt who I'm talking about, like them, and if you don't like-cry to your mammy bitch cause I don't care.
