“A kiss may be grand, but it won’t pay the rental, on your humble flat, or help you at the automat.”
Like literally the most famous song about how much girls love jewellry is just explaining the importance of getting jewellry for when your partner leaves you penniless and alone.
The founder of Girl Scouting in the US, Juliette Gordon Low, funded her first troop by selling her pearl necklace, which was her only belonging after her husband died and left everything to his mistress.
She founded Girl Scouts to teach girls self-sufficiency so they wouldn’t have to go through what she went through when her husband died and she didn’t know how to take care of herself.
While we’re on the subject, let’s please also remember that historically disenfranchised communities who had to worry about frequently being run out of town often bought expensive jewelry with their limited funds not because they were greedy or tacky or classless, but rather because you can’t sew a real estate investment into the lining of your coat, and the powers that be can’t freeze a diamond necklace the way that they can freeze a bank account.
I see bagginshield everywhere I look these days so
Something something dwarves are (seen as) greedy and value jewels and gold a lot because it's the only way to make other races look at them with a resemblance of respect.
So…. rolling into mid-2020 like it’s 2015?
The gag that Thorin doesn’t know Bilbo’s name is based on this wonderful fic by @andhumanslovedstories and you really really should read it!
Angry Gem [Wave Dancer]
The rock fell before Thorin could catch it.
It tumbled almost in slow motion to the ground, cracking loose a couple smaller chips on its way down. The water did little to cushion its fall, and it hit the floor with a rumble that Thorin felt in his bones.
Shit.
THERE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A SCENE WITH DWALIN CUTTING THROUGH AN ARMY OF ORCS TRYING TO GET TO THORIN AS HE FIGHTS AZOG???
AND HE FAILED?? AND HE CRIED???
I'm dead.
I feel like Bilbo's eyes always changes color to the degree that I have no clue what his eye color is. Sometimes they're brown, other times they're green, and the wild card of them all is that I sometimes see them as blue? I guess this fandom can't decide what color is his eyes(?) So I purpose a brand new idea, that his eyes are gray. Gray eyes change color depending on lighting and even season, but naturally they're gray. I personally feel like this is the most logical explanation on why the color of his eyes changes so much depending on a scene or fanart. Feel free to heavily disagree, I don't mind at all. This is just mainly me being very unsure of how to color Bilbo's eyes when drawing him :p
I might be tripping, but I was watching some bagginshield edits, and his eyes do seem to change colors from one scene to another??
So, movie canon? HC accepted, at the very least.
Forever angry that this got deleted 😡
WHY, GODS, WHYYYYY???
At the cost of @aceres-of-joe firstborn child, here is my promised Yuri Bagginshield Arranged Marriage Fic that relies on Thorin being the one to win over Bilbo:

Bagginshield confession/getting together fic idea
I've seen many different versions of this, and they're all wonderful.
But I don't think I've yet seen a combination/crossover with another of one of my favorite stories. Specifically, Much Ado About Nothing from Shakespeare.
Thorin and Bilbo as Benedick and Beatrice, the bickering, insulting each other to the ends of the world couple. (Not a 1:1 match between the couples, but using their story's plot points.)
The Company conspires to get the Thorin and Bilbo together, as they know they're in love with each other but won't admit it.
Thorin "overhears" someone from the Company (Hmmmm, Ori maybe?) speaking to a few others of their group. He realizes they're talking about him, so he hides to listen in.
Ori tells the others about something Bilbo had confessed to him.
That Bilbo is in love with Thorin.
This almost causes Thorin to make enough noise to be caught, but he manages to stay hidden.
(In reality, the Company members talking have done so very purposefully so that Thorin can overhear, right next his hiding spot and just loud enough that he can understand every word.)
The gossiping dwarves at first think that Bilbo should tell Thorin about this. But Ori says that Bilbo is secretly worried about "a simple hobbit" confessing of love to a King. (This may or may not be accurate, but it's what they guess Bilbo's reaason is for hiding his feelings.) They then come to the conclusion that considering all the times Thorin had insulted Bilbo, Thorin would more likely scoff and reject him. And maybe they can convince Bilbo to settle down with a nice hobbit back home.
Thorin is stunned, finally coming to terms with his own feelings.
Later, Bilbo hears Kíli and Fíli talking, maybe with a few other Company members. He hears his own name and, likewise, hides to listen.
Fíli and Kíli are lamenting how much their uncle is besotted with Bilbo, but will never say anything of his feelings.
Just as Thorin had, Bilbo barely stays quiet and hidden. Though, just as before, he needn't worry, as this is very staged anyway.
Thorin's nephews talk of how wracked with love Thorin is in secret. But he won't confess, they are convinced, because Thorin feels his love would be unwanted by Bilbo. Especially after his goldsickness and actions at the gate. (Again, may or may not be the real reason why Thorin never confessed, but it's what they guess is the reason.)
Perhaps one of the nephews even wishes Thorin would do finally share his feelings specifically because "I'd like him to be Uncle Bilbo" and his brother agrees.
Bilbo almost cries out, fully aware now and knowing what he needs to do.
Unclear where to go from here.
Whether there is another plot that causes problems along the way to them confessing, as in the original Much Ado.
Or if they simply both confess at the same time, then cue dramatic first kiss. 😘
(And several Company members celebrating and congratulating each other quietly, just out of the new couple's perception.)
Either way, they might find out eventually that there was Meddling involved in them getting together. They may pretend to be mad at those who messed with their love lives, but aren't actually. Because they were only doing it out of care, really.
And besides, it worked. 😉
Thorin, the disaster he is, would probably approach Bilbo saying something like: You should not be ashamed of being just a simple hobbit!
Bilbo: uh, ok?
Thorin: a hobbit is a great and honorable thing to be, even a simple one.
Bilbo: thanks?
Thorin: *extends him a bouquet of mountain flowers that means things like "stupid, simpleton, you lack good taste" and runs away*
Bilbo: well I guess the boys were wrong about his feelings. What a shame. I wanted to be "Uncle Bilbo".
The Company, watching as this unfolds: *facepalm*
I've fallen so desperately in love with this artwork by @shannon1517 Bilbo looks so yummy and the GOLD! Ah the gold is so beautiful!
Thank you again for letting my Bilbo borrow the jewelry ;3
It's late and I had a hilarious mental image in my head, so I'm sharing.
The Hobbit funny idea, could be pure crack or taken at least somewhat seriously, your choice:
Some sort of magical shenanigans occur.
Somehow, a dwarven member of the Company is transformed.
Into a hobbit.
Not a switch with Bilbo or another hobbit (that would be a different type of funny). But like. That dwarf, their own body, but the hobbit version of it.
For extra hilarity, could be more than one, or all if the dwarves.
If just one, your choice who, although I'd say whoever would be funniest.
(Thorin? Thorin. Yeah, probably Thorin.)
Bilbo cannot stop laughing.
No idea what, if anything, to do with this idea. I just had the image of this happening and that dwarf dealing with several crisises at once:
whyamismall,where'smybeard,what'swithmyfeet, whyamisohungry ?????
(Bilbo eventually actually helps. Eventually.)
I think I'm reading to many kidfics (It's "bagginschild" a thing? It is now) but I'm picturing the Company going around trowing tantruns because they are miserable without their beards, and there's just not enough food ("Bilbo, how do you deal with this???") and WHY ARE THE WEAPONS SO BIG AND HEAVY ALL OF THE SUDDEN??? 🤣
They get out of this with a lot more respect for hobbits in general 😂
Little Red Riding Hobbit! @killerpanda1590 may have mentioned wanting to see a red riding hood Bilbo and a werewolf Thorin and I just really wanted to draw some cute little Bagginshield today ^__^
@badskippy was inspired by my Little Red Riding Hobbit drawing and wrote a fic that you can find over on AO3 check it out here!
^___^ It’s the most amazing thing to me that I could possibly inspire others to be creative.
Council of Elrond: Dwarf Story.
