Just doing BNHA Headcanons wasn't enough, so I'll just make general stuff about different anime/manga/shows/movies that I'll be into. [Don't put much stock in me....]
i do think it’s really funny that like. everyone is suffering and dying and starving to death and like “we’re at the end of the world……..the end of vanity……..not even god is here…….” and silna’s just like. right there. like “i live here.” like one of the first things we learn about her is that she’s eating well. on the walk from erebus to terror, the crewmen are visibly freezing, the scene immediately preceding it has a man getting a frostbitten toe amputated, and silna isn’t phased bc this is where she lives. this is her home. her clothes are appropriate for the weather and she’s used to it, while they’re wearing coats suited to english winters
ultimately the whole point of the show is made by silna just. being in the scenes. these white englishmen arrogantly stormed into this place they dont know how to live in thinking they could conquer it by sheer virtual of being white englishmen and they suffer and starve and rot from the inside out and ultimately die. and meanwhile silna is just also there, healthy and hale except for the fact that her life has been ruined by these random people showing up in her home and throwing it into chaos, because they’re the only thing wrong here
From Kathryn Schulz’s “Literature’s Arctic Obsession”:
Almost invariably, the poles appear in these works [of nineteenth-century English literature] as the place where nature reveals its horrifying indifference to humanity; where humanity itself falls away, leaving men to descend into madness and violence; above all, where the dream of universal mastery goes catastrophically awry.
That ominous vision bears virtually no resemblance to Conan Doyle’s second account of the Arctic. … This time, the search for the North Pole was “a challenge to human daring,” those who conducted it were men of “indomitable pluck, wonderful self-abnegation, and devotion,” and the Arctic itself was “a training school for all that was high and godlike in man.”
… As the later Canadian explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson noted, John Franklin’s entire crew died of starvation and exposure in an area where, for generations, the Inuit had raised their children and tended their elderly. It was possible to live and even thrive in the Arctic—but, steeped in the racial prejudices of colonial England, almost all of Britain’s polar explorers declined to imitate indigenous ways of travelling, hunting, eating, and staying warm. Everywhere else in the former British Empire, English chauvinism led to the death of untold numbers of native people. In the Arctic, English chauvinism led to the death of untold numbers of Englishmen.
The Victorian English imagination takes it in turns to romanticize and demonize the lands and the peoples they conquer. When the land is not as immediately hospitable as they had hoped or imagined it to be (cf. the imaginary “Hyperborean” warm and ice-free sea theorized to exist beyond the 80th parallel), it changes from a trans-oceanic paradise ripe for the picking of resources and scientific knowledge, into a forbidding hellscape whose only aim is to crush out life. This duality of perspective is repeated again and again in the annals of British colonialism (Pacific Islands, India, early America) where both greedy enjoyment/extraction and violent fear of the Other are not at all mutually exclusive.
Of course, the Victorian obsession with nature as symbol or nature as “vehicle for philosophical or religious themes,” rather than nature as existence or fact, hamstrung explorers’ ability to take the dangers of the Arctic at simple face value and to successfully use the technologies already developed by the people who lived there.
Sometimes the JopLittle narrative is too kind to both Jopson and Little. These two men are defined in canon by their relationship with Crozier. Occasionally we go to lengths to make Crozier seem like The Worst because of his drunken mistreatment of Ned, but then we ignore the yummy points of 1) Jopson's extreme dedication to Crozier which does not abate no matter what Crozier does (including mistreating Ned) and 2) Ned's extreme dedication to Crozier which does not abate no matter whatever Crozier does (including mistreating Ned).
There are forces inside Little and Jopson that drive them to remain at Crozier's side even when others are permanently and publicly turned against him. And and: Jopson's and Little's motivations for this can be very ugly. They both believe in class and empire in ways that make them follow orders and refuse to question authority figures even in extreme conditions, even when it puts them in danger. They would both see "inferiors" punished to keep that status quo because that status quo is safe.
At any rate, all this to say that I think Ned and Jops have a lot of room to be meaner in fanfic. xD Even to each other in JopLittle fic. What do y'all think? How does Jopson view Ned's dedication to Crozier and how does Ned view Jopson's?
Tri98 using subtle imagery to connect characters is so interesting. For example, Knives and Vash playing chess and Milly winning Wolfwood's chess game is used as foreshadowing or subtextual reinforcement of the fact Milly is the antithesis to the moral dilemma Vash, Knives, and Wolfwood find themselves in.
Because Milly doesn't hesitate to think about the morality of her actions she just takes actions and deals with the consequences.
That's why when Rem discusses the potential of there being red flowers, a sign of her eden...
It's no surprise that the character that finds the first natural water source on the planet is Milly.
But outside of Milly, both Wolfwood and Knives take a bite out of their mentor's respective apples to solidify them choosing their own path.
There's probably more but if I remember any other examples I'll add them to the post!
the way 98 trigun had to rush thru the gung-ho guns left me in a headspace of just not really questioning their existence or motivations much. And early trigun manga / trimax doesnt get into their motives much either, so tbh I just kinda mentally kept glossing over them?
but finishing trimax and rereading it finally got me to wrap my head around the fact that Knives spent years purposefully looking for and/or overseeing the creation of the worst in humanity, and presumably interacting directly with humans very little otherwise, all to prove his point to Vash.
Knives never went looking for anything to change his mind because he was scared of being hurt by what he found again. He had so much hope for humanity that was dashed by discovering Tesla. The point of Trigun is that continuing to have hope and trust in the face of uncertainty is arduous and terrifying, but that its worth it. Knives refused to acknowledge that he was afraid at all, tried to ignore how desperate he was to escape his fear. The only way he saw to avoid feeling afraid and vulnerable was for him to refuse to have any hope or trust in humanity.
Which is, symbolically at least, why Knives doesn't have a single scar from humans. He never risked trusting them enough that they might hurt him again. He could avoid that vulnerability and uncertainty by threatening them into obedience, and thinking of them as tools.
The one time he let a human close enough to hurt him (post-Rem) was Conrad-- and Conrad ended up decieving Knives with what little trust he was given. And Conrad felt his deception was necessary, because Knives was making himself a threat. Which Knives did to avoid feeling vulnerable.
It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Knives guarantees he sees the worst in humanity, not just because he goes looking for it, but because he is constantly showing humanity the worst of himself. Because doing that makes him feel safe. Because he knows how humans will respond almost every time, when backed into a corner with their lives threatened. They'll try to survive. There's too many unknowns in any other scenario. Too many risks. He's too afraid of another nasty surprise, so he just tries not to be surprised.
Meanwhile Vash, covered in scars, still gives humans the benefit of the doubt. He is willing to risk getting hurt and IS hurt over and over again in order to show them the most kindness he can offer. In order to give humans a chance to show him their best. And he sees it. And it's worth it. man.
Also, not related much to your epic addition, but one more thought I had: I only just put together that Knives has the gung-ho guns working for him under threat of death & that's exactly the way he percieves how humans treat plants. On top of everything else it's a way of personally avenging violence with violence. Which Trigun shows us again and again serves to perpetuate a vicious cycle. ough
In Trigun Maximum, we are told by Midvalley that Knives never smile or show happiness, and he only saw once satisfaction on the Plant's face from the revenge he is inflicted upon humankind.
However, some chapters later, we have a flashback from Nicholas' first and only one on one interaction with Knives, where he tried to kill him but is frozen by fear. Knives wakes up and FUCKING SMILE at this. Why? He killed time and time again without expressing some kind of power trip (I mean, he has a power complex, as he sees plants as superiors, but he isn't shown to get delighted in humans' pain. They are like bugs to him, crushing them under his foot without a care), so it's not just "look at this human learning his place, shivering from fear at my power". This scene is incredible, Knives is so angelic with his long hair, and even totally naked and recovering, his presence is so strong Nicholas can feel he has no chance against him. But the angel is merciful today, and that's a first. He has crushed his most loyal follower body without a care just some days ago because he dared suggest humans could kill his brother. He will kill Conrad the moment he learns he betrayed him. He doesn't fuck around, human's life has no value for him, he probably has killed a ton of his followers in the last decades for daring to betray him. But not Wolfwood. Nicholas D. Wolfwood gets a special treatment, for some reason.
And that's it. Knives is never shown expressing something negative toward Wolfwood, when he does for anyone else. He discusses Legato's life with Elendira like he's nothing but an object (nobody likes Legato, it's incredible. Elendira even tries to kind of bond with Nicholas over their mutual dislike of Legato, and he's like "bitch, you're not my friend") He shows A LOT of anger and disappointment toward Vash. But Wolfwood? No, not even once. When he talks about Nicholas, it's to PRAISE him. When do Knives praise humans??? And if he looks bored in the panel, it's because he is tired (physically, as he yawns, or tired of Legato, who seems pretty jealous that Wolfwood is getting special mission and praise).
Nicholas D. Wolfwood is the only human Knives has showed he is interested in. He likes this one. He woke up to this weird priest pointing a small gun at him, frozen by fear, and saw something he liked. And that's why Wolfwood is given the special mission to babysit Vash, because Knives likes this one. And we don't know why because we are never let into Knives' brain during those moments.
Yuuji takes stress cooking to a whole 'nother level
When Sukuna gets too loud or stress just builds up too much, Yuji kinda just shuts down. During these shut downs Yuji's body kinda goes on autopilot and he goes into the kitchen and cooks.
It doesn't really matter what he's doing when it happens, he just kinda stands up and walks to the kitchen. Yuji is completely non-verbal, aside from a soft humming, during these moments. Usually refusing to interact beyond gently moving someone out of his way.
The repeating soft noises of chopping vegetables or the movement of folding dough, have a sort of relaxing effect on Sukuna too.
I'm kinda just picturing Megumi waking up late one night and hearing noise in the kitchen. He goes in to a tired eyed Yuji softly humming while kneading dough. Megumi attempts to talk to Yuji but is interrupted by Sukuna saying "Don't bother, the brat refuses to communicate when he gets like this."
Gojo witnessed this behavior for the first few nights after Junpei died. The first night he tried to force Yuji back into bed but that was met with screaming and sobbing. So now he will sit at the table and hold one sided conversations.
Gojo had been panicking and begged Nanami for help on the third night of Yuji not sleeping. When Nanami walks into the kitchen, instead of trying to pull Yuji away he asks if Yuji would like any help. This results in Yuji's momentarily freezing before he gestures to some vegetables on a cutting board. Nanami is the only person Yuji will respond to, offers of help from others are ignored.
Nobara and Megumi can often be seen talking on the table while Yuji cooks. They are the only ones who are ever offered food when it is finished. Usually when the cooking is done Yuji packs away the food and leaves for his dorm. But for them? Yuji will carefully plate the food and offer it with a soft smile and glazed over eyes.
The cooking trance is a result of some trauma from childhood, it's something thats been going on way before Yuji became a sorcerer.
Yuji doesn't really remember being in the trance. Like he remembers cooking the food but he has zero memories of anyone trying to talk to him during it.
As far as he's aware Nanami is the only person who's ever been in the kitchen with him during these times. And even then its still kinda muddy.
Sukuna's not too much of a dick in this AU, he just gets a little angry and passionate sometimes. He doesn't like when Yuji shuts down because for some reason it cuts him off from the outside world. It takes significant effort to reconnect himself. After a 1000 years alone Sukuna can't stand the isolation.
AU/short story where Yuuji is slowly beginning to have similar urges to Sukuna. Nanami is the only one to notice.
One day at some party hosted by the school Yuuji becomes overwhelmed by the noise, the constant sneers and disgusted looks thrown at him. He's shaking, just as he feels he's going to do something he might regret, Nanami grabs his arm.
Nanami drags him away from the event back to the empty student dorms and into kitchen. Two balls of dough are dropped onto the table, Nanami pushes one towards him and says "knead."
Nanami grabs the other ball and begins to knead it. Yuuji snaps out of his surprise and quickly follows the instruction.
It helps. The movements are relaxing and let him exert force onto something without hurting anyone.
Nanami keeps doing it. Dragging him away just as he feels he might slip. It isn't always kneading dough, sometimes he is asked to grind spices or whip at cream. But some how Nanami is always there, ready with a task for him to do.
Soon feeling the urges starts to come with the expectation of a task. The few times Nanami isn't there he finds dough balls in the fridge with a note asking Yuuji to finish kneading them.
Sukuna gets quiet too during these tasks. Sometimes Yuuji can feel Sukuna slowly, almost hesitantly reach out, sitting just beneath his skin, gently following along with Yuujis repetitive movements.
Pale tattoos barely visible unless knowingly looked for cover his arms in those moments. Nanami glances at them sometimes but he never says anything. Allowing the vessel and curse to exist together in their unspoken truce.
a/n:
why tf does this always happen, it was supposed to be like 6 sentences of Nanami giving yuji an outlet wtf. Anyway I fully believe that Yuuji could tame Sukuna with food.
For those confused on what happened, Nanami helped Yuuji control his violent urges by giving himself an outlet. Sukuna has felt nothing but violent urges his whole life wanted to try as well. So they did like a shared control type thing, and it helped.
Idk I've just become really obsessed with the idea of Sukuna and Yuuji coming to some mutual understanding like "We are stuck with each other, we may as well try to make it work even if just for a moment"
Assistant Manager Yuuji but also other shit is going on AU
Another VERY self indulgent AU that I've spent far to long thinking about by meeee (─‿─) ♡
Sometimes I like to imagine an AU where Yuuji was picked up by Ijichi for his weird ass strength. Because he can't see curses he can't be a sorcerer, but the higher ups are like "Somethings clearly wrong with this kid and we want to keep an eye on him."
So Yuuji becomes a test run for a body guard program that pairs widows/assistants up people who have heavenly restrictions(or are just weird little freaks in Yuji's case). Ijichi volunteered to help with his training because it meant being put on missions without Gojo.
I don't really have anywhere else to say this stuff but I wanna make note of a few things :P
The Itadori family are moved to Tokyo. Ijichi moves in with them to help with Yuuji's training. Wasuke likes Ijichi but thinks he doesn't eat enough and demands Yuuji fatten him up.
Gojo has yet to meet Yuuji but complains to anyone who will listen that the kid is a home wrecker for taking Ijichi away. Very few of the other managers are willing to put up him.
Gojo also gets jealous when he hears that Ijichi's student brings homemade sweets on every missions they go do together. None of his students love him enough to do that.
The managers and windows are all in a discord server. They use it to ask for help/advice on dealing with different sorcerers. There is a whole channel dedicated to complaining about Gojo.
Things start off pretty good, the first few weeks are easy, almost fun for the two. They go on low level missions where Yuuji is able to observe how sorcerers fight and work. He even gets to meet Kusakabe, who offered to help teach Yuuji how to fight.
But then things start to get weird.
Okay i have zero ideas for how to like scale weirdness so I'm just gonna list some stuff I've imagined and y'all can use your imagination.
Ijichi and Yuuji go against a curse that connects peoples dreams and feeds off their energy while they sleep.
Ijichi is given a super cool sci-fi gun
Registered and unregistered cursed weapons, objects and tools of varying grades keep showing up. Sometimes they appear in the car before missions, in their houses, hell Yuuji even got a 4th grade one in his happy meal. (it would be so funny if you sent in asks about this so i can talk about the definitely fake multi page document of ideas for cursed stuff, jk jk.. unless?)
I'm really bad about coming up with actual specifics and not just fun little scenes for me to think about. Basically just think gravity fall vibes. Getting into some very wild situations but usually home in time for dinner with Wasuke.
Idk maybe Sukuna gets trapped in an apple watch or something and Yuuji carries him around in hopes of domesticating him.
Essentially I want it to be like:
Random assistant: Where is Ijichi and his freak of a kid?! We need more help setting up for the event or the higher ups are gonna be pissed!!
Yuuji who is trapped in an entirely different dimension and must go on a quest to find the Fairy Queens treasure and defeat the Evil Dragon Overlord to return home or their home will be destroyed: Do you think Grandpa will care if we're a little late for dinner?
Ijichi who fell in the portal with him and is doing this for the 3rd time this week: Yuuji-kun we aren't leaving the classroom for a month after this, okay?
Anyway stuff happens, they get into weird scenarios but react with the same energy of someone who found hair in their soup at a restaurant. They're usually able to sort it out before the end of the day.
The higher ups don't really give a shit because the two usually report back at the end of the day no matter how weird the report is, and it's more than Gojo does.
Also Nanami and Gojo both have a thing for Ijichi and are competing for his attention. They are both failing because Ijichi is focusing on training his son right now. :)
There is 100% more details that I'm forgetting, but this is self indulgent and I don't care. Im definitely forgetting a few tags too but oh well.
His cursed eye has been juxtaposed with the eye of a level 3 Akuma Eshi.
And Allen was compared to a soul of an Akuma by Cross Marian. And Mana's curse takes the form of a skull that resides in his head similar to an Akuma.
I think his eye will eventually become a level 4.
I think he will gain extra pupils similar to Yanda when using Mugen. I think it will allow Allen to see the Noah Memory.
Like how Kanda combines his healing power with Mugen I think Allen will combine his curse power with Crown Clown. I think he will create a weapon that can destroy all Akuma which will be a call back to his interaction with Jan.
With the reveal of Mana being the Earl it brings into question whose soul he summoned in the Akuma. I have a theory that it was the soul of the previous owner of Crown Clown.
During's Allen first mission it was revealed that Innocence can cause ghosts to manifest.
Although the Ghost of Mater turned out not to be a ghost a real ghost did appear from the victims of the Black Order's Innocence experiments to create more Exorcists.
Later on we see another example of a ring made out of Innocence turning a person into ghost, Mister Martin.
The ghost of the European Branch was able to possess people so I think the ghost of Crown Clown's previous owner possessed the Akuma.
Allen's eye activated when he destroyed "Mana" so he should have seen the the soul of the Akuma.
He saw the soul of Alma Kalma who had just become an Akuma.
She appeared whole so Mana's soul should have been whole as well.
Even if the soul had deteriorate Allen would see it's original form after destroying the Akuma. If Allen did indeed see Mana then it seems like a ghost is impersonating him which I think there is evidence of.
Whenever Allen is in danger and knocked unconscious his left eye wakes him up and Allen sees an apparition of Mana. This seems just like hallucination but I think it is the ghost.
We see it again when Nea starts to awaken his left eye stops the transformation.
Again we see a hallucination of Mana but I think it was the ghost again.
Tykki was revealed to have heard the name Mana before.
We found out Tykki heard Allen mention Mana when they fought at the Ark.
I'm guessing it was this scene since Allen's eye was activated. I think Allen saw the Mana apparition again but Hoshino omitted it because it will show that the Mana hallucination is not one at all and is not Mana.
I feel like examining Mana's curse could gives a few hints who the previous owner was. A spiral and the letter D appears in the pentagram. The D is in the same font in the manga title which seems significant.
It appears on the skull manifestation of the cursed eye. The D appears in the same spot where Allen's pentagram is above the eye. The spiral takes the form of a monocle which I think represents "The World of Black and White." Also the skull looks like an Akuma with notable differences It has an eye, an initial instead of a full name and a larger pentagram at the top of the skull instead of a small one in the middle.
Mana and Nea both have the inital D in their names which I think connects to the D intial in Allen's curse eye. I think it stands for Domini or Dominus from Anno Domini which goes along with the religious theme of the story. Domini means "Our Lord" and I think Caterina gave them that name in honor of the Earl since his other title is Lord Millennium. I think another meaning for D.Gray-man could be Lord Gray-man or Lord of the Gray-man. Maybe the ghost was a nobleman.
Although Allen's eye evolves like an Akuma it seems like it's the opposite. When Allen's eye evolved it drove him to kill Akuma.
Juxtaposing Akuma's need to kill humans.
One interesting thing to note is that Mana names appears in lower case in cursive while Claire appears in print in capital letters.
We see it's the same in a later chapter which I think is another hint Allen did not summon the real Mana. But we only ever seen two Akuma rituals of Mana and Claire. We know Claire's was legit while Mana's is in question.
"Megumi Fushiguro is one of the best written characters in JJK and the 'potential man' meme completely misses the point of what Gege was conveying with his story,” I say into the mic.
The crowd boos. I begin to walk off in shame, when a voice speaks and commands silence from the room.
"She’s right,” they say. I look for the owner of the voice. There in the 5th row, amongst a pile of beat-up detractors, stands: Yuuji Itadori himself.
it’s funny because the narrative itself shows that lenalee is very complicated and actually flawed and thus more human and realistic and relatable. it’s just misogynists selectively choose to ignore that and either turn her into a ~weak useless crybaby~ or a ~mary sue~ (why are we still using that word? it’s 2016.)
she’s gotten irrationally mad at allen, lavi, and kanda countless times and apologized to them. she’s more emotionally mature than three of them so she owns up to her mistakes.
she has a bad temper! and i would too tbh (well, i do) if i’d have to deal with an annoyingly clingy older brother and three annoying best friends who do stupid shit all the time!
she herself has said on more than one occasion that she “hates” god and curses god for everything that’s happened to her friends. she’s not some innocent naive flower who doesn’t know anything about the world. she can be just as cynical as the main three, except y’all like to ignore that because y’all only like to glorify the ~complexities~ of the male characters, as if lena isn’t complex or well-written.
she herself has admitted to her narrow worldview! she herself has said “to me the world is composed of the people i love and care for”! and this parallels kanda’s narrow worldview, allen’s self-deprecating internal conflict, and lavi’s facade of happiness! it is deliberate people!
she’s ruthless as fuck! do y’all not remember her fight with the level three akuma? she just soared past lavi and told him to look after the ship so that she could recklessly fight the akuma on her own. and if she hadn’t, everyone would’ve died but she herself almost died in the process. she recklessly risked her own life because she was so fucked up over losing allen, because she blamed herself for losing him! and that’s something allen, kanda, and lavi have done before too!
i’m serious like, people really need to pay attention more to her fight with eshi. not only is it one of the most badass and awesome dgm fights in general, but it showcases lena’s darker, more reckless side which is fucking awesome. she literally laughs in eshi’s face and smirks at him at one point and basically says “if i go down, you’re going down with me”. those aren’t the words of some ~innocent mary sue weak useless flower~. those are the words of a war-hardened veteran warrior (which she is).
when someone she loves is hurt or dies, she doesn’t cope well at all (AGAIN, A PARALLEL TO ALLEN/LAVI/KANDA. WOW. ARE WE STARTING TO SEE A PATTERN HERE?). she curls in on herself, holes herself up, and blames herself. that’s not ~flawless angel~ behavior, that’s complicated behavior found in people w/ PTSD (which she has).
like seriously, lenalee herself, in the narrative of the manga, is a complex and well-written character. is she immensely kind and caring and helpful and loving and loyal and positive and cheerful most of the time? absolutely! is she more emotionally mature and level-headed and intelligent than the three main male characters? yes! is she any less complex or relatable or realistic or flawed than them? hell fucking no. the narrative has shown the parallels bw the four of them time and time again. the narrative has shown how complicated and truly human she is. it’s not her fault that y’all wanna box her into a certain category to justify your misogyny. lenalee isn’t 100% angelic or kind. she can be ruthless and cynical and narrow-minded and it’s 100% amazing and understandable since she too is a product of war. idk why y’all like to ignore everything she’s gone through i mean. her parents are dead. she was kidnapped by people at the order, taken away from her brother for /years/, tied up and tortured, and forced into honing her skills in battle. she’s seen countless comrades and friends die and sustained multiple injuries of her own. this girl has gone through just as much bullshit as allen/lavi/kanda have so please, for the love of god, stop reducing her to the ~uwu innocent mary sue flower~ trope because she isn’t that. kind and mature =/= weak or simple-minded.
Steve will drop lore on Eddie in this ‘everybody knows this, catch up’ kinda way when it painfully clear that everybody absolutely did not know this.
Like, Eddie asks Steve to move his chair so he can slide passed him like three time in the middle of a party at the Byers and is being ignored. Finally, he’s like, “Ground control to Major Asshole. Can you hear me?”
Steve’s only notices him because he kicks his chair in the process and is like, “Oh, sorry, man. Gotta talk on my other side. I lost my hearing on this side.”
Which, great.
Eddie feels like an asshole but he can actually put that to the side because the whole table is just like, “…what? Since when?”
“Um…” Steve says, like. Yeah. This is common knowledge. “Two years ago?”
One time in the middle of the summer, Eddie is ogling the freckles across Steve’s shoulders at a pool party when Steve yawns. Eddie jokingly asks if teaching Robin to drive tired him out that much and Steve’s like, “Nah, I had a seizure this morning. Those tire me out for days. It’s so annoying.”
“Woah,” because Eddie didn’t even know that was something on their radar. Neither did Nancy judging by the whole plate of hotdogs she just dropped on the ground.
Steve causally mentioned that he didn’t have his appendix anymore a couple weeks after they closed the gate officially. Eddie asked when he had the surgery expecting an answer to be when he was a kid, but Steve gives him a weird look like, “Uh, couple weeks ago.”
“A couple - what?” Jonathan sputtered from across the room. “A couple weeks ago, we killed Vecna.”
“Yeahh???” Steve rolled his eyes. “And then I had my appendix taken out. That’s what happens when you’re stabbed.”
“You were stabbed?!?”
“C’mon, man. You were there. Keep up.”
Eddie is shut up mid-sentence by lips against his and, wow. Whoa. Steve Harrington kissing him right now and Eddie should definitely kiss back but, “You like guys? I’ve had a chance this whole time?”
Wayne’s opinion on Richard Harrington is not good and his opinion on his kid is not all that great either. He didn’t forget all the times Eddie complained about the boy and his friends, no sir.
Eddie says that Steve has turned over a new leaf but Wayne thinks the kid is rude. He’s over at their house all the time and ignores Wayne half the time when he’s talking to him. Kid is eating the food out of his kitchen and can’t even give him the time of day?
He mentions it to Eddie once when Steve wasn’t around and Eddie, around a mouthful of Frosted Flakes, asks, “Did he have his hearing aids in?”
“What?”
“Yeah, he hates ‘em so he never wears them,” Eddie shrugs. “Can’t hear for shit without ‘em though.”
Sukuna's Loneliness Part 2 (Sukuna is a fraud and it's funny.)
Part 1 Part 3
Before we start...
1) I will be mainly using the TCB scans because of their accessibility.
2) This was written as of JJK 262.
(Click pictures for captions/citations.)
Fraudkuna
You’ve probably heard JJK dudebros call The King of Curses a fraud. Fraudkuna to be exact. I want to say that they’re 100% right, but that doesn’t make Sukuna a bad fighter. Sukuna is a fraud in the way Saul Goodman is a fraud. He’s so good at being fraudulent that it’s his very way of life.
This person puts it succinctly.
And remember Reggie’s Star’s words of wisdom.
The best sorcerers are masters of deception.
Mimicry
Sukuna constantly steals from people—he takes something that isn’t his, and then morphs it into something for his purposes whether it’s bodies, Cursed Techniques (CTs), or strategies. This guy barely has original ideas of his own, using someone else’s work as the base and then building himself on top of that. This is fraud behavior.
Puppeting Megumi
In a 2 for 1 special, Sukuna steals Kenjaku’s original idea to turn body parts into cursed objects and Megumi’s 10 Shadows along with his body.
Naturally he steals the hand signs for Megumi's CT too.
What’s interesting about this copying is that the hand signs are inversed for every Shikigami except Mahoraga.
I think the inversion for Sukuna is an act of disrespect or a form of acknowledgement for a lesser since the hand sign for Mahoraga, who Sukuna respects greatly, is identical to the original form. Sukuna’s Mahoraga is virtually unchanged in design as well. It might be slightly bigger, unlike the other Shikigami whose forms are distorted compared to Megumi’s.
I lean towards distortion being an act of disrespect since Sukuna despises Choso almost as much as Yuji and steals his Piercing Blood while tweaking the hand sign.
They say imitation is the highest form of flattery. And just about everyone has picked up on Sukuna’s Megumi obsession. However, what most don’t realize is that this obsession wasn’t for Megumi the person, but his potential. Mahoraga to be exact.
And though Sukuna adores Mahoraga, his obsession with this Shikigami is in service to someone else…
Professional Gojo Satoru Simp
When I was writing this section, I was greatly surprised. I went back and scanned through everything post-Gojo Death (JJK 236-262) to see how often Sukuna copies Gojo as evidence of fraud. What I found fundamentally changed the direction of this analysis. I will tie it all into how Sukuna is a fraud don't get me wrong, but there's something else at play here...
Post-Gojo's demise, Sukuna thinks of Gojo whether directly from himself or implied by the narrator. 15 TIMES.
Sukuna, for no discernable reason, keeps copying everything Gojo did. It's not a one-off thing like Megumi for a long-term goal, it's a consistent non-stop mimicry after their fight. Here's all of them so far:
1. Using Reverse Cursed Energy (RCE) to heal a burnt-out CT.
2. The hand sign for Unlimited Void. (Aside: Yuta inverts the hand sign as Yujo, but in his case I think it's an act of respect since he doesn't see himself as Gojo's equal.)
3. The hand sign for Red.
4. Shrine based Infinity barrier.
5. Using Blue's gravity to fast travel.
6. Black flashing to restore Cursed Energy (CE) output.
7. The chanting and Honored One Pose at the same time. (And there’s even more layers to the chants themselves check out this post.)
8. Detonating his own technique on himself.
9. Even the way in which he smiles as he beats teenagers up.
By the way this face punch he did to Yugo is a replica Gojo's very first punch he landed on Sukuna.
They say imitation is the highest form of flattery but got dang. This is a bit obsessive to put it lightly.
But it didn’t start here. Sukuna’s Gojo obsession started from this panel. As Sukuna himself confirms.
No. Let’s go back further. This is when it began. Chapter 2 of the manga and Episode 1 of the anime in early June of 2018.
This motherfudger has been planning on how to slaughter Gojo for 200+ chapters. In canon time that is about 6 months.
I want to point out that his promise to kill Gojo first wound up being a lie on multiple fronts (more fraudulent behavior). He admits that it's the wrong brat's body while leaving out the fact that Gojo wasn't his first kill.
Technically Sukuna made Yuji's body his temporarily in Shibuya and killed thousands, but that wasn't deliberate. Sukuna didn't target those civilians specifically, they just got caught up as collateral in his fights with Jogo and Mahoraga. The first person Sukuna went out of his way to kill was Yorozu/Tsumiki (killing Ryu along the way). And he didn't tell Gojo that for a reason.
Much like Gojo, Sukuna is a 2 birds and 1 stone person as in he has multiple reasons for doing a single action. This can make his motives appear dubious or have plausible deniability. Sukuna on the surface went after Yorozu/Tsumiki to subjugate Megumi's soul. But that too was still in service of killing Gojo. Yorozu’s Perfect Sphere, if you remember, acts just like Infinity. And Sukuna trained Mahoraga on it deliberately to get past it.
This also means that retroactively, his Megumi and Mahoraga obsession is a part of his Gojo obsession. He saw his personally trained student’s potential, found out about Mahoraga’s adaptation, and used it specifically to upgrade his CT for the sole purpose of killing Gojo. Sukuna admits to this himself.
Not with his own technique by itself, but with Megumi’s because deep down he realized Gojo’s CT was better than his and he’d lose to him in a fair fight. A fraudulent way to victory.
By the way, when Mahoraga finally adapts to Infinity in a way Sukuna can copy, he's observing the adaptation from the shadows, fully bumming the fight, as Gojo 1v2s Agito and Mahoraga.
What’s so fascinating about this planning is that it was made up on the fly. Sukuna has been obsessing over how to kill Gojo Satoru since their first 10 seconds interaction. (Toji behavior much?) Megumi and Mahoraga being a part of his plans occurred by chance. There’s a certain level of adaptability and skill needed to think on the fly like this. It truly makes Sukuna the Best Fraud in verse.
Lies and Hypocrisy
Simply copying those you admire is base level fraudulent behavior. What makes Sukuna the King of Frauds are the contradictions in his words and actions. This isn’t like Gojo Satoru who is actively hiding his true feelings as a trauma response. Sukuna betrays his own inner logic on convenience. Uraume even notes this as his “capricious nature”.
These are excuses made by a Professional Sukuna Understander who also acknowledges just how much he was into Gojo despite Sukuna actively denying it himself. (He’s just a fish? What kind of fish engages in 6 months of psychological mind games and preparation to catch outside of Moby Dick? Yes I know he’s a whale but the obsessiveness bordering something else is there.)
We'll get back to this eventually. For now we will focus on how Sukuna picks on children.
Hating Ideals and Roles
Sukuna hates ideals. Everyone knows this because he tells Yuji constantly how much he hates them. He spits on Yuji for having ideals and goals. And then turns around and gets hyped when he finally has his own goal to chase. The hypocrisy speaks for itself.
But that’s not the end of it. He also berates Yuji for seeking a role in life, outwardly teasing him when he finds one besides cog. And then gets this excited when Maki “forces” one on him.
He’s not just being a hypocrite here. I think it’s envy. Yuji gets all the things he was denied—a society that does not exclude him for the circumstances of his birth, clear cut goals and purposes alongside others, and fulfilling connections with equals. In the worst case of Sour Grapes I’ve ever seen, he derides the things he believes he’s incapable of having. But the second he gets a taste, he starts salivating.
Hating Love
Sukuna's hatred of ideals and roles in society is but a microcosm of his one true hate—love and connections. Anything soft like bonds makes people weak. Sukuna seeks only strength so he believes the following:
Not only does Sukuna admit here that connections with other people are a weakness, he believes Gojo to be the modern pinnacle of casting them away to obtain strength. In a very roundabout way this is him praising Gojo for being a monster like himself.
And that's where the next contradiction lies. Despite Sukuna preaching the benefits of isolation, he still craves that monster to monster connection. He adores anyone just like him. Monsters who throw all their humanity away just like him. He wants that connection so badly. Look at how often Sukuna gets excited when he thinks others might be like him. (Notice the half-assed Brat is Sukuna calling Yuji out for not committing to monsterhood.)
Uraume of all people should fulfill a bit of that social want Sukuna has, but they put him on a pedestal. They are his servant and he is their master. Even though they can intuit his needs, they can’t fulfill all his emotional ones since their relationship is one with inherent distance between them. That being said, Uraume still understands exactly what Sukuna is looking for—other monsters.
Professional Sukuna Understander once again gives insight onto how this fraud thinks. Sukuna is strong enough to endure solitude. He is fearless and alone by embracing power.
And yet Sukuna cannot abide by his own principles against love.
December 24th is the most romantic day in Japan. This information is in part how we infer Gojo Satoru is in love Geto Suguru time and time again. Kenjaku calls Gojo out for this. Setting a battle date to December 24th is romantic in nature. And Sukuna, of his own volition starts seeing Gojo as the one who will teach him love.
No. That's not right either...
Gojo has never been the one trying to teach Sukuna love. He never heard those words from Yorozu. Not once. It's the other way around. Sukuna is the one trying to teach Gojo about love. Every single time "The one who will teach you about love is..." appears, Sukuna is in the final frame. It's never Gojo. It's always Sukuna.
The loneliness that comes with unrivaled strength. The one who will teach you about love is...Sukuna.
Kashimo takes Sukuna up on the offer. He has Sukuna teach him about love. When Sukuna first starts his speech about love, he speaks of Yorozu as someone who could've taught Gojo of love—as in Gojo was the one who needed teaching. He also spells out for Kashimo that the strong love with their violence. Sukuna himself admits that he loves by slaughtering. All while saying it's worthless in the end, because the only thing that matters to him is strength.
Wanting love and strength is greedy. You can't have both. Sukuna killing Gojo was not only an act of love, but an act of denial in pursuit of self-preservation. Sukuna found someone he could possibly love and he did everything in his power to kill him for the sake of maintaining his strength.
This could be proof he's not a fraud when it comes to hating love. But he still engaged with it and became stronger as a result of it—contradicting the very principles on which he decries love as weakness.
In retrospect, this makes this particular Gojo glazing Sukuna sequence from the infamous JJK 236 ironically hilarious.
Gojo never realized that Sukuna obsessed over him for 6 months nonstop after meeting him for 10 seconds. He never realized that Sukuna's cruelty and cuts were trying to reach him. The most Gojo knew was that Sukuna bagged Mahoraga to kill him. He didn't know about the planning that went into it or the heart behind it all. Gojo has always been iffy about understanding other people's feelings towards him mind you, but...
In the same way Geto did not understand Gojo's love for him until both of them were dead, Gojo did not understand Sukuna's love for him even in death. Because Gojo and Sukuna are the same person.
Umineko no Naku Koro ni (When the Seagulls Cry) is a visual novel about a person who is fundamentally misunderstood by those around them. They desperately want to be loved without being perceived, believing themself to be unworthy due to trauma and immutable characteristics given to them at birth. Instead of telling anyone these feelings directly, they play games akin to torture. They torment the ones they love over and over in hopes they'll see through their actions and understand them.
The Consequences of Fraudulent Behavior
The tragedy of Sukuna is his inability to fully realize his desires. He wants an equal in strength to play with or be killed by, but he crushes anyone with the potential to do that. Gojo was the closest thing Sukuna ever got to realizing that desire. Hence the “You cleared my skies. I shall remember you for as long as I live.” and subsequent "Where's Gojo Satoru?" ad nauseum.
Instead of allowing these potential companions to realize their abilities fully, he kills them and then gets upset about it. There's honestly no difference between him and a dog impulsively tearing his favorite chewtoys to pieces and getting confused by the outcome. (And in the case of Gojo Satoru, that's the dog catching the car but if the dog had spent half a year studying the exact speed and timing down to the stud before ripping the bumper off.)
I genuinely cannot tell if Sukuna is aware of this problem himself. Seriously, I don’t think anyone has told him that if he wants a matured fighter, he needs to let them…mature in the first place. I know he was treated like animal since birth, but he’s smart enough to know better.
He’ll never reach satisfaction like this and it’s as funny as it is pathetic. Even Megumi, the first person he saw with the potential to entertain him, was chewed up with ease. Not just him, but the very reason he took interest—Mahoraga. Instead of having a Shikigami that will always evolve with him and therefore always be a source of everchanging entertainment, he tamed it and added it to his arsenal.
Sure all of that was to kill Gojo via masterclass frauding, but that too cucks him in the long run. Gojo is still the only person in Sukuna’s entire existence to keep up with him and nearly kill him on his own. If Sukuna were smarter, he could’ve developed a lifelong rivalry that fueled both of their growths. But Gojo beats him fair and square, so he binding vow frauds his way out in a way that permanently destroys this source of fun.
And on top of that, his killing of Gojo may have also been Sukuna trying to trick himself into believing he doesn't need anyone to satisfy him ever. He probably believes this from the bottom of his heart. Kashimo calls him out for it. "Then why mince your soul into cursed objects and watch all those years go by?" Why get so excited when Uraume shows up too?
I'm not saying that Sukuna has been secretly craving romantic or sexual love for the past 1,000 years. He has had plenty of opportunities to engage with this kind of love and has chosen not to. (Though I do think Sukuna saw his fight with Gojo as a some warped version of a date at this point.) The kind of love Sukuna seems to crave is one between friends, peers, and equals. What I'm saying is that Gojo shattered his world view in the same way Gojo also shattered Toji's world view. But unlike Toji who was able to admit his way of thinking was flawed, Sukuna is actively in denial.
He denies his own feelings and desires for companionship while running around looking for another Gojo Satoru that will never exist. All that Sukuna is left with are disappointments and ghosts to chase. The only person who keeps getting up stronger every time he knocks them down is Yuji. And he hates Yuji.
I’m not sure what this all means in the grand scheme of this story, but I am fascinated by how this absolute menace sabotages his own chances at happiness because his power and fraudulent behavior has stripped him of his ability to socialize.

See: [podcast] Will Toji & Itadori get along well?
22. when jin and kaori ask yuuji about nobara they always refer to her as his gf (not true, they aren’t dating, never will). nobara always complains about it when she comes over and begs on hands and knees for them to stop (they dont bc they think its funny)

51. whenever he babysits outside of the house and comes to pick up yuuji sukuna asks where “his accessory” is in reference to the baby and kaori hates it😭😭😭
